Mark unused footage

is there any simple way to mark all footage of a complete project, which is not used in any of the several sequences?
background: for editing trailers i have to digitize a lot of stuff, before i can decide what ends up in the sequences. after editing i want to delete all unused data from the raid and make a backup on another raid of the used footage.
thanks for your input!

You can easily search for all clips that have been used in any number of sequences, and then label them all, or do what ever else you like with those clips.
Select the sequences in the browser window. Then hold down Apple-F, to bring up the find dialog. I don't have Final Cut on my laptop at the moment, so I can tell you exactly what to select in this dialog, but off the top of my head. Check the box that says "Selected Sequences", select "Unused" from the drop down box.
Then leave the search critera empty, and click the find all button. It may take a few seconds for this to run, but it should then open a new search window with all the clips listed. You can then select all the clips and alter there Label color, which will be reflected in the main browser window.
Hope this help

  • Deleting unused footage in the Event library?

I always make an edit of my videos and therefore end up with a fair amount of footage in each event which is not needed any more.
Is there a way of deleting unused footage from a specific project from it's event?

Use the Reject Tool to drag with your mouse over the frames you don't need. They will be marked with a red bar underneath. If you want to reject a whole clip, you can right-click and reject the clip that way too.
Then, select "Rejected Clips Only" in the selection box at the bottom.
Finally, click "move rejected clips to trash".

  • Delete unused footage in iMovie 10.0.6

I have used previous versions of iMovie and found that I was able to delete any unused footage in a clip.  For example you had a video clip that was 2 minutes long, but you only used a 10 second snip of it in a project you could delete the remaining 1 minute and 50 seconds which was great in clearing your hard drive. I was able to do this by selecting a folder then holding down command and delete buttons, delete unused footage. In iMovie 10.0.6 I can't seem to be able to do this or find a simular feature.  Any ideas?

    Hello Yanuar Tourniquet,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities! The new iMovie interface includes a few video effects that may achieve what you want. For information on how to apply these effects to your clips, check out the following resource:
Add video and audio effects - iMovie Help
    http://help.apple.com/imovie/mac/10.0.6/#/movd17f56aaa
Add a video effect to a clip
    1. In the browser or the timeline, select a clip or range.
    2. To show the effects controls, click the Video and Audio Effects button.
    3. Click the Video Effect button, and then click the video effect you want to apply to the clip.
To remove a video effect, select the clip or range containing the effect, click the Video Effect button, and click None.

  • Canon 5D Mark II footage in FCP

Does anybody edit Canon 5D Mark II footage with FCP? My playback stops at every blade cut or in the end of the clip for a second before resumes the next clip ... pretty annoying. All the other HD camera footage plays just fine.
    Help!
    Jarmo

I can only covet your camera, but I happen to have a FCP tutorial for the Mark II. It says do this:
    1. Make sure you have latest MacOS (10.5.6 or highter), Quicktime (7.6 or higher), and FCP (6.0.5 or higher). And of course an Intel-based Mac (2.8 Ghz recommended). You may still get some stutter during playback with multiple layers of video, audio, and transitions/filters. But output will be OK.
    2. Make a Mark II pre-set as follows (one day FCP will include one, sigh):
    Select Audio/Video Settings.
select Sequence Presets. Select this one to duplicate and modify: DV NTSC 48 kHz.
Pull down Aspect Ratio and select HDTV 1080 i (16:9). that is is really correct but 1080p is not a choice but you will not convert to interlaced anyway.
Change *Pixel Aspect Ratio* to SQUARE. Do NOT check Anamorphic 16:9
    Select *Field Dominance* Upper(Odd)
    *Editing Time base*: select 30
    *Timecode Path*: 30 Non-Drop Frame
    Compressor: H.264
    *Audio Settings*:
Rate: 44 kHz, Depth: 16-bit, Config: Cannel Grouped
Under SUMMARY tab in Audio/Video Settings:
(make sure Sequence Preset shows name of the one you just made)
    Capture Preset: Generic Capture Template
    Device Control: Non-controllable device
    Video Playback: none
    Audio Playback: default
Click Create Easy Setup (put in your Mark II name) and click Create
    Enable verification tab: checked
NOW when you begin a new project, go to Easy Setup and pull down your newly-created Mark II preset. The tutorial I got this from said to be sure you create a NEW project or some default presets may still be in play.
You may need TRANSCODING if your system still struggles with the above.
Convert H.264 to a managable HD codec (Apple ProRes 422 or 422 (HQ) or DVCPRO HD 1080p30)
I assume you would know the steps doing this, but if not, let me know.
Would really like to know if this works for you. Have the Mark II on a short list of possibilities for a new camera.
    Good luck!

  • Can Canon 5D Mark II footage be edited in FCE at 1080p?

Can Canon 5D Mark II footage be edited and outputted in FCE at 1080p?
I am converting the raw 5D footage to Apple intermediate Codec using MPEG Stream Clip and then importing into FCE. Playback during editing is fine. Then I notice that in the easy set up options there doesn't seem to be an option to choose 1080p. Does that mean that FCE cannot edit/output 1080p files, or does it just mean that there is no easy setup for 1080p? What should my easy setup settings be for editing these files in FCE?
    Thanks for your help

I converted to apple intermediate codec using MPEG streamclip to make it easier to edit in imovie (plays back smoother) so assumed it was best to do the same with FCE. Not necessary?
    The converted file data is
    H.264, 1920x1080, AIC, 16 bit, big endian, FPS30, 64.62 mb/s
    The original file data is
    H.264, 1920x1080, 16 bit, little endian, FPS30, 39.77 mb/s
    Thanks

  • Exporting Canon 5D Mark ii footage..

I'm fairly new to final cut, im running a Mac Pro, 2 X 3 Ghz processor, 10GB memory, 10.6.2 snow leopard... and i still find myself having to render at every edit in the timeline, and now im having trouble figuring out how to export correctly to get the highest possible quality on youtube and/or vimeo
here's what i have done and researched so far:
i took my original canon 5d footage into MPEG streamclip and converted the files into Apple ProRes 422 (LT) at 30fp, i then created a custom setup in final cut 7 with the following presets:
SEQUENCE PRESET: Canon 5D Mark ii footage (duplicated an Apple ProRes 422 (LT) 1920X1080 30p 44.1ghz audio)
CAPTURE PRESET: DVCPRO HD 1080p30 48kHz (i won't be capturing in fcp since i've been using MPEG streamclip
    DEVICE CONTROL PRESET: FIREWIRE NTSC
VIDEO PLAYBACK: (sometimes i have this set at Digital Cinema Desktop Preview - Full Screen so that i can take advantage of my other monitor, but it tends to drop frames faster in playback, so i usually have it set to "none")
    AUDIO PLAYBACK: Default
now my question is, how do i correctly export this? i tried a couple different ways, some had skipped frames... others the audio was off... another setting made the colors way too contrasty after exporting...
also how can i solve this "rendering" issue... did i make a mistake in the beginning in setting up the timeline (btw , the sequence matches the same settings as the footage... ) i'm also playing back at "safe RT, medium quality, half frame rate..." not sure if that matters..
so yeah, my two main questions are, correct export for this file, and any help with render issues?
    thank you..

    oops.sorry...
here is a link to what i uploaded using Quicktime X directly to youtube..
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a3q19YDSdWE
it doesn't look as good as i think it could...and it has a HQ option instead of HD? i don't have quicktime pro so i couldn't export with exact settings, just directly to youtube... how can i export w/ final cut .. when i export using quicktime conversion and using Apple Pro Res, it ends up being a 1.34gb file and its only 1 minute... would i then need to compress it?
and yes i need to get rid of all the layers i have in the timeline.. maybe that might help but it was giving me the rendering "RED" color even in the beginning when i had 1 layer..
i changed audio to 44.1 because i read it somewhere online i believe it was under phillip bloom.. suggesting to change from 48 to 44.1 for all canon 5d footage.. ? im not sure why though..

  • Log & Transfer 5D Mark II Footage

    Hello all,
Well I just bought an Imac 27" and Final Cut Studio in order to work with my Canon 5D Mark II video files. I've been a PC guy my whole life so I'm trying to figure out Final Cut Pro which is pretty similar to Adobe Premiere. Anyways from what I have gathered, I need to Log & Transfer my files but convert them to ProRes422. I see the option in the Log & Transfer area to choose ProRes but there are 4 different choices.
    ProRes422 (HQ)
    ProRes422
    ProRes422 LT
    ProRes422 Proxy
I'm guessing I want HQ but I'm not exactly sure what the difference is between these choices. What would be the best choice in order to edit 5D Mark II footage in FCP for the web and or DVDs?
    Thanks!

It'd be great if you did a side-by-side comparison and posted your particular findings. For a while now, the standard answer has been "ProRess 422" but it seems like some folks are getting acceptable results with going to LT.

  • Problems deleting unused footage

imovie doesn't throw away unused footage that i have cropped even though i empty the trash in imovie. i have looked inside the package contents of the movie project and the only files there are the original DV files that i have imported and not the individualy edited clips.
This is a problem because im trying to make a 10 minute trailer clip from 200 hours of footage captured in individual DV files and can't import anymore DV clips because of low HD space.
I want to save the 10 minute trailer as a movie project that i can adjust later but i don't want to store a file full of huge original DV clips.
It didn't used to be like this. if i imported footage from a DV cassette imovie would delete the cropped parts of footage from the project. is there a difference in importing DV files?
    Any help will be appreciated.

This is a problem because im trying to make a 10
minute trailer clip from 200 hours of footage
captured in individual DV files and can't import
anymore DV clips because of low HD space.
Why import 200 hours to an iMovie project just to build a 10-minute trailer? Isn't there some way you can pre-select the chunks you plan to use and ignore the rest?
    • iMovie 5/6's non-destructive editing is a lot smarter (and considerably more robust) than earlier versions of iMovie. When some feature of non-destructive editing doesn't do what we want, we can usually find a way around it. Like any other new feature, we need to understand how this tool works, and how to use it to our advantage.
    • When importing video from a camera, iMovie offers a built-in preference that lets us discard Media files later. We can use the preference that limits the length of imported clips to 2 minutes or whatever. Then later, if we don't use any of the 2 minutes contained in Clip 100 we can discard the clip, empty the iMovie trash, and recover the disk space occupied by the 2-minute Media file.
Note that iMovie's non-destructive editing feature doesn't prevent us from discarding ALL material. It only does this: It preserves the entire Media file stored in the project's Media folder. It never shortens those files, unlike earlier versions of iMovie.
But it preserves ONLY the Media files the project actually uses. When we discard the LAST clip using a Media file and empty the iMovie Trash, the entire file is discarded. Then we recover that disk space.
So if a project contains 200 Media files and we use 1 second from each, none will be discarded when we empty the iMovie Trash. But if we use just 10 of those files, 190 will be discarded when we empty the Trash.
(By "using" a file I mean that the Timeline or the Clips pane contains a clip that uses is.)
    • When importing DV movies (instead of importing from a camera) we can use QuickTime Pro to trim the DV files to a reasonable size. Open a DV file, remove the stuff you won't use in iMovie, then Save As a reference file you import to iMovie later. Reference files are tiny, so you waste no disk space doing this, and iMovie imports only the stuff you actually need.
You can even Copy and Paste chunks from multiple DV files into a single reference movie that you import later to iMovie. A reference movie can point to one DV file, or many.
Once a reference movie has been saved to disk, we can drag the tiny icon in the titlebar of the QuickTime Player window directly into the iMovie project Timeline.
Or we can select the frames we want in a DV movie, then click in the movie window and drag it to the Desktop. The Mac builds a new "Movie Clipping" reference movie that plays that chunk. Rename the clipping file (optional) and drag it to the iMovie Timeline.
    • Another strategy is to export your rough-cut Timeline to a camera, re-import it to a new iMovie project and discard the original project. So if your Timeline uses just 1 minute of the 20 hours in the project, the project shrinks from 260GB to 0.2GB.
    Lots of ways to go.

  • Have to convert 5d mark iii footage?

    Hello,
When I try to drop mark iii footage on the SpeedGrade timeline I don't get any video, but I get audio. The thumbnails display a red dot at the top left corner:
I presume I have to convert the footage to something more common and editable before bringing into SpeedGrade, is that right?
    Many Thanks,
    David

It shouldn't be an issue bringing mkIII footage right into SpeedGrade.
    A couple of questions:
Are you working on Win or Mac ?
What are you seeing on screen when you load the clip to timeline (error message, black) ? Please upload a screen-grab of SpeedGrade UI
Can you load the clip in QT player ?
Can you load any other QT's in SpeedGrade ?
    Thanks.

  • Cannon Mark II footage mixed with HVX for editing

    Hello!
I am editing a music video and my source files will be from both the Mark II and the HVX...
I have been doing lots of testing and can't seem to come up with a good answer.
Should I make the Mark II files Apple Pro Res and mix them into my DVCPRO HD timeline?
Should the DP shoot the HVX footage at 30pn or 24 or 60?
I'm kind of driving myself crazy here - over thinking it.
The HVX footage will be about 75% of the video so it seems like the timeline should match that.
ANy thoughts on mixing Mark II footage?
    Thanks!!

    That is great thanks
    My steps are these:
    1. From my card I add DCIM folder to FCP Events folder.
    2. Then I go to FCP X and import but then he is creating original media folder with (id) so then I guess I can delite DCIM since I can use for future editing that (id) raw footage .Is that corect? My hard drive is backing up everytime I add new footage to HD.
    Thanks

In cinema tools, my footage stays grayed out. Both when I try my Compressor pro-res footage, & original footage from cam.
When I convert from 60>23.98 in the Gopro app, it works fine.
Does anyone know if there is any quality loss in this app?
Also does anyone know another free software tht works great to convert markIII 60>23.98 footage?
    Thank u thank u thank u !!!!

Questions about Cinema Tools should be asked in the Final Cut Studio forum.

  • Better playback of  Canon 5D Mark 2 footage in 4.1?

    Hi,
since the update installations gives me errors all the time (my post here: http://forums.adobe.com/thread/439764?tstart=0 ), I can't verify this myself:
The readme of the PPro update say, that h.264 playback/handling is improved. So I was wondering, if the playback of native Canon 5D mark 2 files falls into this section also.
I'm not talking about proxies or cineform's neo etc. I mean the raw quicktime footage from the camera...native...
Since Canon annaunced yesterday that FULL MANUAL control (aperture, ISO, shutter) will be availible on june 2nd, this is pretty much the last (and 25p support in the cam) hurdle for editing the 5DII footage.
    Please let us know!
    Martin

I would try it out right away, but I'm not able to update my Production Premium for about 4 hours now. Well, I can download it, but the instalation quits with 3 errors. I made an extra post about it, but so far nobody seems to have the same issue.
I read that somebody had some other issues with instalation, so maybe the uploded files aren't that "perfect" because adobe wanted it up by the end of may (like they said the would
I've seen a few comments on installation errors already. Hope that that gets solved. It would be tough finally getting the long-awaited 4.1, only to find that it would not install, and may even mess things up. Fingers X'ed here. I also hope that Adobe was 100% satisfied with their efforts, and there was no Midnight-coding, as it was headed out the door.
As for the footage from the Canon - I've only heard great things about it. Some of the after-market folk have already gotten on the bandwagon with all sorts of add-ons for it on the video side. There were a couple of interesting ads in last month's American Cinematographer. Apparently some companies feel that there will definitely be a market for "stuff" to use this camera and its lenses for doing some serious video work. Time will tell. Though I'm a Nikon-guy* on the still-side of life, this Canon does look sweet. Hope that 4.1 is all that users could ask for. Again, the fingers are X'ed.
    Good luck,

    * since my wife went digital, all of her point-n-shoot still cameras have been Canon. Now, I do not store these in the same room with my Nikons, but I do like their choices better than what Nikon offers.

  • Big black marks after rendering  DNxHD Codec after using some effects, using Eos Mark III footage on FCP7

    Dear All,
I hope you can help me. Working on an IMac with FCP 7. It's the first time that I am using footage shot with Canon EOS Mark III. I did not expect this to be such a problem as it was almost impossible to edit with the footage, as I kept on getting the beach ball and then it would crash. Finally fixed the problem by downloading the DnxHD Codec and was able to do a rough edit on a compressed timeline to make the job faster and show a rough cut to the client.
Now I am trying to cut an HD version, where I'm using the same footage with matched timeline settings and when I don't do anything and render it, it looks fine. The minute I use an effect (e.g colour correction or a simple crop) and render, I literally get big black blotches or marks all over the image. Any advise on where I should look to fix the problem?
    Many thanks!
    Amanda

Convert the footage to ProRes LT before editing.
Your camera shoots H.264 and Final Cut Pro does not like that one bit.
You can use FCP's Log & Transfer function to do this (you might need to install a Canon Plug-in first) or you can do the conversion in Compressor.

  • Canon 5D Mark II Footage and Final Cut 5

I recently received some footage shot with a Canon 5D Mark II that I will be needing to edit. It seems as though the ideal codec to use is ProRes but unfortunately I am working with Final Cut 5 and this is not an option. I was told that I could use Apple Intermediate Codec but that I would need to adjust the project settings to 1080/30 fps not interlaced. Can someone please confirm this and tell me how I can make those adjustments to my project settings. Also, will the clips require rendering when i place them on my timeline. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry, you did mention the AIC.
    Frame size-1920x1080
    P.A.R. - square
    Field Dominance - None
Editing Timebase - same as your source clips. Check that in the Browser or in MPEG Streamclip. If you left it at 30 in Streamclip, stay with 30. If you changed it to 29.97 in Streamclip, make your sequence 29.97 also. If you bring in titles, make sure the clips are set to Field Dominance of None. I find that Final Cut wants to assume all 1080 is interlaced so it sets FD to Upper.
