Market penetration of version 2.6, 7, 8

Hello, I am a Product Manager working to define requirements for an Enterprise application. I am looking for the market penetration of the various version of Solaris operating systems (version 2.6,7,8). I am told that 2.6 has the highest market penetration at this point? is this true and if so what are the rough percentages and adpotion rates of 7 and 8?. Any information would be helpful or sources where I could find the information.

Hi ,
First check if the other OS are properly installed in the other partition. You can boot the system in 2.6 and mount the other partitions and see the directory structure. It is also good to use the same swap space for all the other OS.
At the OBP, disk0 or disk5 are the alias name for the device names. Each of the partition has a device name. At the OBP the device name for the disk can be obtained from the command:
ok>show-disks
or
ok>show-devs
On an Ultra 2 it would look something like this:
/sbus@1f,0/SUNW,fas@e,8800000/sd@0,0
The partitions are represented as alphabets, where "a" would represent partition 0, "b" for partition 1
so for the disk0 or the first disk and partition 4 would be:
/sbus@1f,0/SUNW,fas@e,8800000/sd@0,0:e
and partition 5 on disk1 or 2nd disk as:
/sbus@1f,0/SUNW,fas@e,8800000/sd@1,0:f
The device name can also be found by bootiing is Solaris 2.6 and using the command "format"
If you want to give alias name for the different partitions at the OBP so that you do not have to write the whole path of the device again, you can use the command "nvalias" at OBP
ok> nvalias <alias name> <the device path>
eg.
ok> nvalias sol8 /sbus@1f,0/SUNW,fas@e,8800000/sd@0,0:g

Market penetration of Java as of now?

Hi,
For a study I am investigating the market penetration of the JRE for browsers. I've searched the web and could only find a report from Macromedia, stating that Java has a 85,6% market penetration. However this report is from 2006 and might not be that accurate. I was hoping someone could point me to an unbiased official (and hopefully objective) source which I can add in my report!

Yes I am interested only in the browser market. Say I would launch an applet based on Java 6, how large would my user base be?
Also you make the statement that there almost always is a better web technology than using an applet. Could you please elaborate on that?
As far as I know Java's only way of serving a webbased rich internet application is via the use of an applet.
Ofcourse there is also Webstart but that's a framework which works outside the browser.
Also, on business computers that are shut tight on the priviledges department, installing a webstart app can be difficult.
An applet doesn't require installation, which is one of the major points my RIA-app must comply to.
Finally you could say Applets have a browser memory restriction and therefor aren't suitable but using jnlp you can assign memory usage as far as i know. Next to that update 10 allows you to set the memory heap from the applet-tag in your HTML, though its a stopgap measure.
If i sound offensive, that was not my intention. :)

APEX market penetration & consulting market

Have a search on Google and Jobserve for the various RIA, Java and web app frameworks as compared to APEX.

Why do the RIA frameworks and Ruby on Rails garner such a buzz on the web?
Why do the number of Spring/Hibernate dev positions outnumber APEX hundreds of times over?
APEX is such a productive (cheap) development platform. Oracle has such a high penetration. Why isn't it being adopted more rapidly?

I think some of them are the strenghts of Apex, but
they do count when people decide on what tool to
use.Usually people choose their tools on the size of their pockets and availability - otherwise why would there be so many PHP applications with a mysql backend.
Don't get me wrong -- I think Apex is a great tool
and platform to build high-quality and performant
applications, but I think it has its niche market.Every new tool and technology has a startup phase - I think it's quite remarkable how far APEX already has come and how fast development on new releases of this products are being released.

Now the part you guys might find interesting is that this app was released with 3 different versions of AIR. 2.6 for the NOOK as that is what the nook has preloaded the only other option is captive runtime, 2.7 on Amazon to support the Kindle Fire which ships with 2.7 pre installed and 3.2 on Apple because that seemed to perform best.
I believe Google Play version is also 2.7 for the sake of some sanity.
App is performing very well, just want to thank Adobe for giving us this opportunity to build apps on a platform we love!!
Another interesting piece in regards to ratings. Amazon and Apple both accepted the rating of Everyone/4+ however Google manually changed the Everyone rating to their Level 3 rating probably equivelent of 12+ and NOOK rated the app 18+ for some reason.
And another thing, the Android APK was first published with the ability to copy the app off the device disabled, that made the app over 20 megs (doubles app size) so it was not wifi friendly anymore, I then decied to update the app with this feature tuned off, the next day there was 15 pages worth of google results offering a free download of this apk, so look out for this when you decide to enable or disable device copy.

You've mentioned some things I've also been thinking about recently.
1) Air versions: I'm currently using Air 2.7, and have 2 apps in the appstore, and 1 of those is on Amazon. I'd like to upgrade to 3.2, but
I hesitate because I don't want to suddenly find that some customers can't update it.. How did you switch the version for each device? sounds like a pain, if you have to switch folders all the time.
2) What's the process of making an app captive runtime with Air 3.2 in Flash CS5.5? Can I just paste in some code into my first frame? I'm not much of a developer, so please let me know!
3) I'm also worried about piracy, and worse - people ripping off my artwork from my swf file. I might not even release my new app on Google Play because of that. Since downloads were pathetic on Google for my first app, I'm not sure it's even worth it.
Might as well mention it - my latest app, made entirely in Flash has got in Apple's 'New and Noteworthy' education iPad category! This had been amazing news, and I hope the feature lasts a while longer, or I'll no doubt disappear from the Appstore like last time!

K1: Update Android Market version to latest to get parental controls?

I noticed that the Lenovo K1's Android Market version is 1.0.28 which does not have the parental control/PIN for in-app purchases. This allows kids to accidentally purchase items without your consent, and therefore makes the Lenovo K1 and other android tablets very family/kid unfriendly.
From what I've read online, the latest Android Market version is 3.1+ and has the PIN code setting.
Does anyone know how we can get the latest Android Market?

The Android Market app updates itself as appropriate for each device.
My market app is version 3.4.4 on my A1, but you're assuming that the Honeycomb and Ice Cream Sandwich devices -- your K1 being one of the former -- use the same market app. I don't know that is the case. You may, in fact, have a newer market app that is earlier in its lifecycle. 1.0.28 may be the very latest version of the HC/ICS app.

Trouble upgrading from iPhoto '09 version 8.1.2 to latest version

Currently, I am using iphoto '09 version 8.1.2 and want to SAFELY upgrade to the latest version of iPhoto (and I have already upgraded to Lion). I've heard about a lot of lost data when doing this! I started by trying to install version 9.0.1 it won't load on my hard drive saying that I need to install version 9.0 first. I thought about just going ahead with iPhoto '11 but I'm confused and don't want to risk losing data. Any suggstions?

Make a back up before upgrading anything.
Somewhat confusing but iPhoto 11 and iPhoto v9 are the same thing. 11 is the marketing name for version 9 of iPhoto - like 09 is the marketing name of version 8 of iPhoto.
To upgrade to iPhoto 11 (v9) you need to purchase it. You can do this on the App Store.

Xoom Market Your Client is out of date. it will be automatically updated shortly.

When I click on the Market icon i get Your Client is out of date. it will be automatically updated shortly. I have had the Xoom since yesterday and registered it right away and it has been connected since then. Anyone have an idea how to solve this or how long "shortly" is?

FWIW, I have been using the Market app every day since 2/28 with no problems at all. I never saw the message about an update being available. Application info on Market says I have version 1.0.16. I don't know if that is the current version or not. Didn't find information on Market app software version at Market website or Android developer site.
Now there is one setting that I changed the first day I had the Xoom. I wanted to install the "Help Center" app I Googled up on Motorola's website, but by default the Xoom only allows installation of apps from the Market. So I went into "Settings" | "Applications" and checked "Unknown sources" in order to "Allow installation of non-Market applications". I do not know if having this setting checked made it easier for some other service to update the Market app or not, but it is a plausible theory, since there may have been a problem with getting Market to update itself "in band" so to speak, since the Xoom was set to only allow installations from Market. Kind of a chicken-or-egg, pull yourself up by your own bootstraps kind of problem.

Siebel Marketing/OBIEE and cache tables

Dear,
Could someone explain to me the mechanism of the cache tables on OBIEE/SIEBEL Marketing.
For example, the MC_ASSET_MK table contains two columns GUID and QUALIFIED_ID. I understand the meaning of the QUALIFIED_ID column. But what is the meaning of the GUID column. Is it a foreign key to another table ? Which table ?
What is the difference between the two tables MC_ASSET_MK and MC_ASSET_SR ?

How to make the link between the technical version and the packaging vers.

Does anyone know how to make the link between the technical version number and the packaging version number ?
For exemple, I can download on the SAP Market Place the version B1iSN 8.8 PL7 but if I look into the B1iSN the version information, it returns B1iP_3.0_SP04_HF03.
This is quite confusing.

In fact this information is usefull for me. I was looking for a customer installation but he did not remember which version was installed. They are facing some problems. So I don't know if I have to update B1iSN or not to solve it.
B1iSN returns only the technical version number, but I would like to know which version was downloaded from the Market Place.

Android Market for A T & T phones

A T & T has my Samsung Captivate locked so I can only install apps from the Android Market. Will the Firefox for Mobil beta be available thru the market sometime in the future?

Firefox 4 beta 1 will not be available in the Android Market, but future versions will (including the final Firefox 4 release for Android).

Remote panel plugin support for Firefox browser?

I think I've been through all the relevant material on the NI site, but to no avail. I used to be able to make Remote Panels work with Mozilla by copying the NPLVWin32.dll into the Mozilla plugins directory. This doesn't seem to work with Firefox--at least, not with my Firefox.
I have XP, Firefox 1.0, and LabVIEW 7.1.1, and these tests are all on the machine that has LabVIEW installed, so the run-time engine is not the issue. The symptom is that I get "Click here to download plugin" when trying to load a page with an embedded panel no matter what things I do in the Firefox plugins folder.
Any ideas? I think that Firefox/Mozilla are closing in on 10% market penetration, with much higher rates in Europe, and I'm wondering if others have made this work. This experience has also made me want to know more about how browser plugins work (how the supporting library is selected and located by the browser, how the OBJECT and EMBED tags work, etc.), so good tips on explanatory nuggets are also appreciated.

Flex Builder 4.0

Can anyone tell me where I can get a copy of Flex Builder 4.0? Adobe has burried deeper than a mafia boss would bury a dirty rat.
I'm developing a Flex Applicaiton and the largest market penetration of flash is Version 10.0 and then a steep drop off any higher. To target this FP10 I need a version of Flex 4.0 sdk.
running Flex 4.0 SDK in Flash Build 4.5 does not work properly as you cannot view the Design Mode.
Therefore I need Flash Builder 4.0 to properly target FP10.
Can anyone tell me where to get it because its no where on the main site of Adobe.

I am also having the similar issue. We added a new member to our team and now we are not able to provide him Flash Builder which can target SDK 4. I think Adobe should provide Flash Builder 4.0 license with 4.5 purchases.

Photoshop vs Gimp

I was looking into alternative photo editing softwares and I came across GIMP. It's free and seems to have a lot of what Photoshop has.
I would like to know from all of you that has used Gimp and Photoshop which would you prefer if both were free?

No question is absurd. If someone is trying to find information out. Gimp from what I can see is a decent program. I've only used it one day so far, but it seems to be just as good as Photoshop. I've used Photoshop Element versions now for awhile and was thinking of finally getting a full version. But then someone told me about Gimp. So I checked it out.
Would you take a Mercedes if it were for free. Of course you would. Gimp might not be a Mercedes, but from what I can tell it gets the job done. So why should I pay for a program when Gimp is free.

If Photoshop was free, it wouldn't be Photoshop - you would not have the extensive feature set, innovation, quality control, maturity of the codebase or market penetration. The millions of dollars of financial investment, critical thinking, extensive engineering hours and high quality user base is what makes Photoshop the product that it is today.
