Masking Folders/Layers

I am designing a story in Flash that is composed of multiple
storylines that run parallel to the main story. In other words,
simultaneously there will be four stories being animated at the
same time. Each of these stories will be placed in their own folder
which will contain various layers. At any point, the user will be
able to select only one of these four stories they would like to
watch. All four of these stories will share a timeline, meaning
that the timeline on each of these four stories will progress
forward at the same time.
I am wondering how I could achieve this in Flash, and if it
would be complicated? I was thinking of using a series of Masks
(one that would cover up the folders in which each story is
contained). Would this work, and how would I go about to accomplish
this?

You would use a button I imagine (or whatever you have
planned for opening a story to view) and tell a mask that
encompasses the movieclip to move from an empty frame (no mask,
nothing is seen) to a second frame (full mask, everything under it
is seen).
If you don't know how masks work, then spend a little while
in the help files. There's bound to be some kind of demonstration
of using one there.

  • Masking multiple layers to achieve some effects

    Hi,
    I understand (at least a little) about how masking works. As far as I see it reveals layer underneath it.
    What I am wondering if there is some ways to reveals different(multiple layers) layers or masking is done only on one layer.
    I have searched and some pages suggest it is possible to mask multiple layers but it doesnt actually show any examples or step by step tutorials.
    Any help would be appreciated,

    The Help on masking has a heading "Mask additional layers after creating a mask layer" that might point you in the right direction.

  • Masking multiple layers with one mask

    Is there any way to do this???
    When I setup template files for say...  thumbnail images  with rounded corners and a dropshadow, I preffer to do this the way that Photshop and imagready allow you to do it > creat a shape and use it to mask whichever layers above it. That way if I choose to make it one or two pixels wider, I just do it to the masking layer and resave the tumbnails out. As far as I can tell Fireworks makes you create a different mask for every layer so you would have to change it in every layer... not the best work flow!
    Thanks for any help with this.

    " Hmm...could  something like this be done using an animation, then export the  animation to images?"
    My imagination doesn't lead me to a solution using the animation features. How about a custom Command that creates an instant mask with shadow? Let's say I've got a stack of Bitmaps sitting on the canvas. I hide all but the one on top, and then draw a shape I want to mask them with. I'll use a star Auto Shape as an example. If I Shift + Select the bitmap and the star Auto shape, and then choose Modify > Mask > Group as Mask, the bitmap gets clipped to the shape of the star, and the Group as Mask step gets recorded by the History panel. If I then select the now star shaped bitmap, I can add a drop shadow to it. The drop shadow step is also recorded by the History panel. If I Shift + Select the two steps that were recorded in the History panel, [Group + Set LIve Filter] I can click on the Save as Command icon at the bottom of the History panel, give my new Command a name (I'll use Shadow Mask), and then save it to the FW Commands list.
    Once my command is available, I can use it as follows.
    -Choose Modify > Ungroup to ungroup my original bitmap/star mask group
    -Hide bitmap 1
    [note that the star shape is still sitting on top of the stack of  hidden  bitmaps]
    -Resize the star shape as I wish
    -Unhide bitmap number 2
    -Choose Select > Select All to select the star shape and the second bitmap.
    -Apply my custom "Shadow Mask" Command.
    -Export
    -Ungroup and follow the steps above to mask and export the images.
    It's still a bit fussy, but it saves a couple of steps. I'll bet someone could create an extension that makes it even easier.

  • How to display alpha channel of layer mask in layers palette ??

    Help me out here folks....
    Using CS5--in the past, when I added a layer mask to a layer, it would display in the palette as the alpha channel, which was very handy. Now, when I add a layer mask, it only appears as the mask icon; i.e., gray square with white circle in the middle. I have no clue what I did to change from the one to the other, but I would certainly like to get the alpha representation back!
    TIA,
    Toby

    Could you please post a screenshot with the pertinent Panels visible?
    Could you be mixing up Layer Masks and Vector Masks?

  • Masks/Shape Layers/Perspective

    What are the advantages of converting a mask path to a Shape layer path?
    A related question...I have shot a clean plate BG, then talent walks into shot with a big card in hand. What I'm having to do is shrink the card in his hand. Pretty simple I've duplicated the layer with the card in hand masked out the card on one layer select Add for the mask on the other select Subtract so when I scale down the card the clean BG covers the scene.
    After scalling down the card the perspective is a little off so how can I move the mask points to change the perspective of the card in the scene because if I move then in their current state they just eat into the masked image.
    Is it possible to do this?
    Thanks

    Right-click on footage --> Track motion. No masks required at all, just a conventional 4 corner pin. Feel free to use mochaAE or explore all sorts of otehr workflows using combinations of tracking and masks.

  • Disabling "auto" clipping masks in layers

    Currently on my home mac - if I 'create a new fill or adjusment layer' it automatically  selects 'use previous layer to create a clipping mask'
    The only way I can stop this is by alt clicking on 'create a new fill or adjusment layer' which brings up the 'New Layer' dialogue box' and unticking the 'use previous layer to create a clipping mask' box. I have to do this everytime which is very annoying
    I seem to have set this as the default. How can I set it back to it's normal default of not using the previous layer as a clipping mask (as it used to be and as my work version does as standard)
    Thanks

  • Masking background layers

    Dear friends,
    I'm looking for a way in Elements v6 (Mac platform) to apply sharpening only to part of an image. In CS3 I make a copy of the background layer and sharpen it. I then add a layer mask and hide all and then reveal the part I want.
    Since Elements doesn't have a layer mask to apply to a copy of the background, I am looking for a "work around".
    I am teaching students who only have elements to work with. Is there a way to do this?
    Mary Lou

    Mary Lou,
    You can use a clipping group adjustment layer. A clipping group simulates a layer mask.
    This example is for blurring the background of a picture but it also applies to sharpening and other kinds of changes.
    1. Duplicate Background layer and apply the blur.
    2. Add new adjustment layer below blur layer, but do not make any changes; just click OK. It doesn't matter what type adjustment layer; the only purpose is to get the mask available for the next steps.
    3. Activate blur layer and group it with adjustment layer.
    4. Set foreground/background colors to their B&W defaults.
    5. Select Brush Tool. On the adjustment layer paint with black to reveal the original picture, white to restore the blur. Use a soft brush to get a smooth transition between the blurred and sharp portions.
    Note: In step 5, an alternative is to select the area to keep the adjustment, invert the selection,
    and fill the inverted area with black.
    Note that this method is similar to the link in Karin's message.

  • Can Illustrator CS mask layers without grouping them?

    Windows XP Pro SP2
    Intel Pentium 4 CPU 3.60GHz
    2.75GB RAM
    I draw a lot of complex maps using Illustrator 8 in preference to higher versions. I customarily use a top layer clipping path to mask out the edges and "crop" the image.
    The advantage of Illustrator 8 is that the clipped artwork still rests on its respective layers, allowing me to turn on/turn off whichever layers I desire, while still maintaining the mask.
    As far as I can tell, later versions automatically group (and thus place on the top layer) all items that are masked by the clipping path, meaning that my map layers no longer exist, and the map has lost its funtionality.
    I've been using version 8 for years despite having access to CS but now my company is losing 8 and moving over exclusively to CS. I can't figure out an effective way to maintain the same layer functionality in masked artwork in Illustrator CS.
    The mass of nested layers and sub-layers for each and every object has me lost. It seems over complicated but doesn't offer me anything I can use, instead removing the ability to do what I used to do.
    Is there any way I can still mask my artwork and maintain ungrouped layer functionality in Illustrator CS?

    Any object on a parent layer can mask child layers. Here I selected the topmost path and chose Make Clipping mask from the Layers flyout menu. Masked items remain on their own child layers. If I use the Selection tool (black arrow) and click on a tree, only the tree is selected.
    The interface is surprisingly buggy, even for Illustrator. If it's not working, try Cutting and Pasting in front to get Illustrator to figure out it can use the path for a mask.

  • Masking off multiple layers (Somewhat urgent)

    Example: http://sidneysm.com/storage/MatteIssue.png
    Look at the example. I have a background layer, two or more midground layers, and a foreground. The middle layers are on Basic Motion paths to move past the "window" in the foreground. I can crop the background to the window, but cropping's useless for moving objects. Outside the foreground graphic should be solid transparency. How can I do the Final Cut equivalent of Shake's "Over > Over > Inside" to mask these layers to the window?
    Unfortunately, I need this resolved in the next hour or so. Thanks in advance.

    I didn't.

  • AI CS 6 crashes when I try to export  an image with layers to PS CS6

    Hi guys!
    well, I'm completely newbie on Illustrator. I only have to use it to create level on pdf images to work with it in Photoshop.
    So I installed Illustrator yesterday for the first time and immediately the problems started.
    Ay the first opening I had more than one error
    Immediately following this (before the program started for its first time)
    Then I opened a pdf file in it, select > all , Object >  clipping mask > release, Layers, release to layers (Sequence).
    Till here all went OK.
    At this point All i nedd it's to export in Photoshop CS6.
    So File > export >save as *psd.
    At this point Illustrator crashes every time!
    I did all the update with Adobe Application Updater, my PC is new and a really good PC.
    It runs Win8 64 and with PS all goes like a charme.
    What have I to do? I see many posts about the plugins problem (and still no solution by Adobe).
    I ignore the problem for the plugin errors, and after some reload now I don't have that error but this one:
    Same thing when I relaunch, each time and every time.
    I need to solve this problem and it's impossible for me to call Adobe customer assistence As you can see my English is pretty bad and I can write but not speak by phone.
    Can you guys hep me please?
    Thanks in advance

  • Creating Mask In Flash CS3

    HELP!!!!
    I am about to pull my hair out.
    I am new to flash and would like to know how to create a
    mask. Could someone please send me the step by step instructions on
    what to do.
    Your help is greatly appreciated.

    On the stage, you do it the same as in previous version of
    Flash. Right click the layer your mask is on and select the 'mask'
    option. It will mask any layers grouped under it.
    In ActionScript you would do it like this:
    ** You need to have imported the Button class into your
    library, drag a Button component to the stage and then delete it.
    Try the code below in an empty flash file to see how it works.
    import fl.controls.Button;
    var masked:Shape = new Shape();
    var g = masked.graphics;
    g.beginFill(0xff0000,1);
    g.drawRect(0,0,300,300);
    g.endFill();
    addChild(masked);
    var masker:Shape = new Shape();
    g = masker.graphics;
    g.beginFill(0x000000,1);
    g.drawRect(150,150,50,50);
    g.endFill();
    addChild(masker);
    function applyMask(e:MouseEvent = null):void {
    masked.mask = masker;
    var myButton:Button = new Button();
    myButton.label = "Apply Mask";
    myButton.emphasized = true;
    myButton.width = 150;
    myButton.move(20, 20);
    addChild(myButton);
    myButton.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, applyMask);
    myButton.y = 325;

  • Mask multiple movieclips from single mask

    Hi,
    h have big movieclip 450X350 and there are many small thumbnails i need to mask those from big movieclip, I need to animate those so that i can't put those in a single movieclip, Is it possible to mask multiple movieclips from single movieclip...?

    If you want to mask them using Actionscript then you should be able to place them inside a movieclip/sprite as separate animations/movieclips and then assign the mask to the container.
    You can mask multiple layers under one layer if you use the timeline

  • HELP: Copying layers from one file to another to keep structure not possible??!!!

    Hi guys,
    I have a curious question. Sounds a bit silly and highly disappointed if Illustrator is actually not capable of doing this. Hopefully I have missed something.
    I have an AI doc that has grown so large that saving it now is a major effort so trying to break out sections into multiple AI files. Allot of users will be working on these files so it is imperative that all the Artboard elements are clearly organized in the appropriate folders (layers). Im trying to simply copy and paste a layer that has multiple layers beneath and within those more layers to another empty AI file. Everything copies correctly and in place however it dumps all the elements into a single massive layer in the new file. If I go into the Layer Palette menu and check on Paste Remembers Layers it does a better job at keeping some of the structure but it still doesnt copy exactly how the structure was in the Master document.
    Please tell me Im doing something wrong. I cant believe that you cant simply drag and drop a parent layer from one file to another while maintaining its structure! Exactly like in Photoshop - copying a folder from one file to another is simply as easy as dragging and dropping ...is this same methodology not available with Illustrator? I always assumed the layer and folder concept between these two packages were somewhat interchangeable.
    Thanks for any help, comments, or suggestions
    Nick.

    Hi All,
    After much trial and error trying to locate where the problem was it ended up being the guide objects. If you have the guides set to lock and attempt to copy out any layer that a guide is sitting in the resulting copy/paste will break apart that layer structure in the destination file. Simply setting the guides unlock allows everything to translate correctly.
    You guys may have known about it already but I learnt a little something in the process. Thanks to all for your suggestions!
    Cheers

  • Photoshop CS5 mask problem

    When I use Photoshop CS5 as an external editor in Aperture 3.2.3 and apply a mask to an adjustment layer, the image often just brings the "masked" portion of the PS file back into Aperture, even after I flatten the layers in PS and save the file. As a basic example, if the image I send to PS5 from Aperture is a bird against the blue sky and I put a mask around the bird to work on the sky, then flatten the layers and quit PS, the image which comes back into Aperture will just be the masked bird - as if it had been cut out and pasted onto a black background.  Any ideas how to fix this?  It doesn't happen all the time, but it's frustrating when it does.  I send tiffs to PS5 from Aperture in case that's relevant.  Also, I'm working on an old iMac 2.8GHz with 4GB Ram.  My image files are stored on an external HDD.  Thanks.

    Hi Barney
    This is exactly what I deal with all the time.  I usually work in tif and will try Leonie"s pdf sugesstion. So when I collasp the layered file and we have saved the mask as an alpha channel (auto) we have to go to the channels pallet and delete that mask.  I dont have too much trouble with masks in layers if I place them in a group.  But I still go to the Channels and delete masks before saving.
