Master Password Change w/o Install Disks

12/07
Greetings:
I have a friend that has forgotten his master password; plus, he never received the install dvd's with his new iMac (10.5.4. I know that the master password can be changed with install dvd. Any help to get this changed will be appreciated.
Mike

The following may work:
You can reset the password as follows:
To start, reboot in safe mode.
At the prompt enter the following:
/sbin/fsck -fy
Press RETURN. If you receive this message: ** The volume (nameofvolume) appears to be OK then continue to the next command. If you receive this message: *** FILE SYSTEM WAS MODIFIED *** then repeat the above command until you receive the OK message. If you repeat the command seven times without receiving the OK message then you cannot repair the drive and should not continue.
/sbin/mount -uw /
Then, type in pressing RETURN after each:
/usr/libexec/registermach_bootstrapservers /etc/mach_init.d
cd /var/db/netinfo
netinfod -s local
SystemStarter
passwd root
You’ll be asked to come up with a new password. If you want to change a login’s password, substitute ‘root’ with the username.
After that, enter
reboot

  • Lost Admin rights, can't change PW from install disk

I just installed the update to 10.4.11 and my main user lost it's admin status. It was the only admin I had set up.
I've found several articles including this one:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=ServerAdmin/10.4/en/c8od36.html
which seem to address my problem. It seems like changing the Root Admin's password would fix everything however when I boot up from the install disk and click on change password I'm then supposed to click on my HD icon but can't because it's greyed out.
It seems to be that my computer doesn't recognize any users, not even the System Admin (root). The only thing I can imagine (in my very small amount of mac knowledge) is that the there are no users listed in the admin users group in the computer.
Any ideas at all that might help me fix this without having to reinstall everything would be so greatly appreciated!!

Hi Beth, and a warm welcome!
I think you may have some corruption...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, *you must select your language first.)*
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."

  • MY MASTER PASSWORD CHANGED! WTF?

I have used the same master password for years. All of the sudden when I opened Firefox today, the password is different. How can this be??? If I simply reset the password, I will lose dozens of passwords that are not written down. How do I avoid this? I am NOT happy. And, NO, I did not change the password on purpose or by accident! Please help.

It is possible that the key3.db file that stores the encryption key and master password got corrupted or was otherwise replaced.<br />
If this is the case and you do not have a backup of both key3.db and signons.sqlite then your saved passwords may be lost.

  • External HFS encrypted password change & Drive mounting in Disk Utility without password

    I have two questions:
    1. I have an external HFS encyrpted drive that was encrypted via Mavericks Disk Utility. I have the password for it in 1password but I cannot cut and paste it when it attempts to mount. It is a very long password and it would not be practical to type it manually. It seems that Apple does not permit pasting such passwords (I have also tried to copy the password to a sticky note and then into the drive mount password prompt with no results, thus it is not unique to 1Password). At any rate, to remedy this situation, I would like to change the password to something smaller and memorizable (which is very very unfortunate as I find this a gaping security issue for who, in their right mind will manualy type in a 60 character password every time?). I have not been able to locate a method to change this external drive's password. Any assistance would be greatly apprecaiated.
    2. Alarmingly, I AM able to mount the drive WITHOUT entry of the password if I do a verify disk and repair disk. This is horrifying. This means that without any password someone can mount the drive just by running these utilities.
    Thanks in advance.

There are PC-specific disk utilities, akin to DiskWarrior for Mac, so if you have a PC as well, a PC disk utility might help repair the directory corruption if run from a PC.
External drives, whether they're formatted for PCs or Macs, can be subject to the same causes of directory corruption discussed in See my "Data corruption and loss: causes and avoidance" FAQ. Some of those causes have nothing to do with hardware failure and many are preventable.

  • Startup disk/master password dilemma....

    Hi there,
I hope someone can help me here,I`ve already looked in the relevant forums for an answer but nothing really helps. I was trying to find out why my father`s pc printer (lexmark) wouldn`t work on my G4.And I was instructed that maybe I didn`t install panther 10.3 correctly. So I tried re-installing it when it asked about the startup disk I selected macintosh HD.Next thing it`s asking me for the master password and apparently I`ve forgotten it,even after the hint becomes visible,I still have no luck,is there any way I can delete it.I`ve already changed the user passsword, but it`s the master that I can`t get passed.
    Thanks Jon

The proper way to reset the pmu is outlined here.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=95037
If you did not enable FileVault then it should not be there. It is not the default installation. You, or someone else, has to go the preferences, open Security, put in a password and enable file vault.
It encrypts everything on your hard drive using your password as a "key" for the encryption. Without the key, all the info is hopelessly scrambled.
Once, years ago, I had a similar problem in that I could not get the password reset and the computer would not accept what had been my password for a year. Obviously a file was corrupted that kept my password. I could not use the password reset by the install disk either. Fortunately I had cloned my hard drive and could boot off of the clone and copy files that were not up to date since the last clone.
At this point I'd say you are going to have to do the same. Use or purchase another hard drive, install X to it, copy your user files and re install your applications.
As an alternative, you could try posting to the Unix forum on Apple Discussions and see if anyone there can help you use command line to get a new password.

  • Cannot sign on to amazon card account w/o getting a box asking me to "enter the master password for your software security device." ???

Does not happen on other browsers

You have probably set up Firefox with a master password because you're using "Remember Passwords for Sites" option. To change the master password or to disable this option, you can do so as follows:
    * Go to \Options\Options (using the Firefox favicon);
    * Go to Security tab;
    * Under the Passwords section make necessary changes.
To disable the master password, uncheck "Use a Master Password".
To change the master password, "Change Master Password" button.
Alternatively, you may be using a security software (like I use Norton 360) and use the password management functionality with a master password which you will have to manage from that particular software or via the appropriate add-on.

  • Changing Password With Os Install disk

I bought my macbook on ebay a couple of months ago and I need to install a wireless printer but it won't let me with out the 'Ipadmin name and password'...which i guess it not my userid and password that i use to sign on because it is not working. so i found out i may need to reset my root password and to do that i need to use the OS install disk. I have that and i put it in and press restart which the pop up comes up, but while it is restarting the disk is ejected and my computer just starts up normally. is there any other way to reset the password or get it so the disk doesn't automatically eject it's self? Thank you!

Did the install disc come with that Mac when you purchased it? If baltwo's suggestion doesn't work, you may have received the wrong install disc.

  • Forgot Password Only have install disks for 10.4 and disk #2 for 10.5

    Hello,
I was playing around on my macbook last night and changed my password to a password that i always use for just about everything and when i changed it worked because i had to logout cause something froze and safari was really messed up so when i logged in the new password worked but a few minutes later i was trying out some really old app from like 10.2 or something like that and it froze everything except finder so i tried to force quit and that wasn't working so i logged out and that froze too. So then i had to hold the power button down to shut it down and after i got it back up and running i tired to login with the new password i made earlier and it rejected it. I tried my old password and some really old passwords i tried caps and some of the words capital and it still didn't work. So then i was reading some other forms of people that forgot their password and stuff like that and most of them said to boot up with the install disk so i did and i did the password reset utility and it still didn't work. It said this volume can not be found or something like that. Then i realized that i had the disks from 10.4.0 and I tried to find my 10.5.0 ones and i only found disk #2 and for some reason it wasn't working when i tried to do it so then i was reading more forms about booting up in single user mode my doing Apple-S and i typed in the codes and they didn't work cause they were for 10.4.x and i heard they changed something like that in the security update that i installed so i have a big problem. I either need some hacked way of doing it or a new updated code. I will try to find my other disk and try to do it again but i know where it is its all the way up in canada at a place i own there . If there is a new code that would be Great. Or if there is some way i can download Mac OSX and burn it onto a CD or DVD because i am on the windows vista side of my mac now typing this. If anyone can't figure this out i will soon call apple. Thanks for helping. Bye
    Danny

    G'day Danny.
Single User Mode will work in Leopard, unless the MacBook has been properly secured, or corrupted in a more fundamental way. Were the instructions from a credible source? I am reluctant to post the instructions here, as they are a powerful weapon in the hands of the unscrupulous.
I am confused about one thing: the Leopard retail distribution usually comes on one DVD. The only time people get two disks (AFAIK) is the System Restore disks that come with a computer that ships with Leopard. From the sound of things, yours shipped with Tiger.
I don't recommend downloading OS X. You never know what you might be getting!

  • Since installing Firefox Sync my master password is requested randomly.

Since installing Firefox Sync my master password is requested randomly. is there a way of stopping this happening.

Somewhere around Firefox 29, Firefox changed how Sync accounts work. Please see this article for more information: [[How to update to the new Firefox Sync]]. If you can't do that in Firefox 33, you may want to install Firefox 29 temporarily to do the account change, and then update to Firefox 33. Since a Solution Manager is a double stack installation (ABAP + Java) and has the UME configured that the passwords in the ABAP are used you can change (most of) them in ABAP.
HOWEVER: Those passwords are used on different places and you would need to check the specific application section where they are used (WebDynpro connections, JCo etc.)

  • Can I install OS Lion if I have forgotten my master password?

Can I install OS Lion if I have forgotten my master password?

As I understand, the master password unlocks any user accounts for my laptop.  I have my login password and that lets me install new programs but wasn't sure about changing the operating system?

  • Forgot my master password, is there a way to change it?

Forgot my master password.  Wondering is there a special way to change it for the new OS LION?
I read past discussions on how to change it for older OS.  Such as deleting some files under /library/keychains folder.
Also, the other way I read is to put in the installer disc and change it from there.  But, how would I be able to do it for LION OS as I have downloaded it directly from the App Store and do not have it on any physical disk.
Also, I did NOT turn on Filevault.  So this should be easier for me to change it.
    Thanks!
