Xterm in enlightenment

I've decided to try out E17; it seems that running "xterm" generates a X Terminal window with a command prompt and flashing cursor.
Problem is, all the text that I input (and the stuff that's outputted) is invisible (the cursor moves around, but there's nothing shown).
Any advice?

I saw this problem a few weeks back. Try putting this in your ~/.Xdefaults file:
XTerm*background: black
XTerm*foreground: white

  • Enlightenment 0.18.2-1 problems

After upgrading from e17 to enlightenment-0.18.2-1 there are few problems:
    1. Icons from systray have disappeared. There are no more pidgin and gnubiff icons.
    2. There was disabled composit mode and after upgrade fullscreen xterm becomes non-fulscreen after switching desktops. I have to switch on some animation to stay in fullscreen xterm after desktop switching.
Is any way to fix this behavior ?
B.t.w. Does enlightenment have an mail-check aplet the same with gnubiff (imap with ssl and IDLE or NOTIFY support) ? I need something like gnubiff but workable. Gnubiff seems to be dead project:-(.

    1. Right click on the systray, go to Systray | Settings and enable xembed.
    2. Not sure what you mean by "there was disabled composit mode". I'm in E19 with a compositor rewrite, so I can't test, maybe someone else can help more with this one?
There is a mail module as part of the e-extra-modules, but I've never used it. Worth a try.
    1. Oh... You have save me a lot of time with "xembed" check-box. Thanks. Now gnubiff seems works more stable then before I switched xembed on.
    2. I'm also not shure about it because I've translate it back to english from russian :-). So it can be composition mode or compositor mode or ... It is something like this: settingd -> screen -> virtual work places and here there is animation of <something (switching between work places)>. There are Blend, Diagonal, Grow, Pane and other variants. When I choose "Disable" then my fullscreen xterm becomes non-fulscreen when I switch back to work place with this fullscreened xterm -- it is annoying ...
Where can I find e-extra-modules ? There is no such package in AUR.

  • Enlightenment slow to start

    Hi,
I have had e17 installed for quite a while from the e-svn packages, but did not realise that the packages had apparently been dropped from the repos, and I have just switched to the extra/enlightenment17 packages. I noticed right away that it takes much longer to start into an enlightenment session than it did before. When I start X to xterm and then run enlightenment_start, I find these error messages in the output:
ERR<>e_randr_12.c:214 safety check failed: E_RANDR_12_NO_MODE(mode) is true
ERR<>e_randr_12_output.c:196 safety check failed: outputs == NULL
    and

I also see a lot of
libpng warning: iCCP: known incorrect sRGB profile
I do not know if these have anything to do with the long startup time, but these are the only error messages I see in the output. Does anyone know if these might be the problem, or if there is any other way I can debug this?
    Thanks!

Are *all* of the EFL libs up to date as well? This would include Ecore, E_dbus, Edje, Eet, Eeze, Efreet, Eina, Eio, Embryo, Emotion, Ethumb, & Evas.
The libpng warning can safely be ignored. It's just libpng 1.6 complaining that some of the pngs are using old sRGB profiles.

  • Problems with Enlightenment

    Hey,
I'm a newbie to Arch Linux but it sounded cool and like something I wanted to try.
It took me a little to get some things figured out, but I got my Arch Linux somewhat working and Enlightenment installed as my WM.  However when I try and lauch a lot of the programs that came with the WM I get an error message saying:
    Application run error
Enlightenment was unable to run the application:
    xterm
    The application failed to start.
Also, an unrelated question, I installed firefox using pacman from a virtual console, but all the tabs and menu bar look super ugly like windows 98 or something.. why?
    Thanks

I don't think that is my problem.  My problem is that when I try and run most of the applications that came with E17 I get that error.  I was using the application xterm as an example, its listed under the applications > system > XTerm (Terminal).
The applications that don't work are the Avahi SSH and VNC Server Browsers, MPlayer, Avahi Zeroconf Browser, and XTerm.
The only ones that do seem to work are the Elementary Test application and the Enlightenment File Manager.

  • Flickering - radeon, awesome, xterm

    Hi!
I'm setting up Arch on my notebook and I have problems with flickering.
The config is very basic - just Xorg, open source Radeon driver and awesome wm. When rearranging xterm windows using awesome they flicker and they are redrawn slowly. It takes few seconds for xterm running top to settle down and not flicker. It looks like video driver is not working properly or Xorg setup is wrong. I've checked similar config under VirtualBox on my PC and there were no similar issues.
Looking into dmesg and Xorg logs I could not find anything obvious for me. I tried adding Xorg config files with more specific settings of Monitor, Display etc, including DPI, display size, etc but with no luck. I'm not sure what should I check next and what could be the problem.
I'm posting both dmesg and Xorg logs below.

  • X11 / xterm won't even launch anymore

I was using X11 with the minor glitches (i.e. cannot move x11 windows to secondary display). For some reason, x11 stopped working altogether today. I go to /Applications/Utilities/X11 and nothing happens.
I checked /var/log/system.log and it has the following errors:

Coincidentally, X11 stopped working after I ran System Update to install the Quicktime and iTunes updates today.
Anyone else start having this problem?

I was checking the boards and found someone who said their org.x.X11.plist file was not being installed after they had deinstalled 10.5 X11, installed 10.4 X11, and went back to 10.5 X11.
I had did that earlier and wasn't having problems, but I went ahead and pulled that file from another 10.5 computer and copied that over to the affected Macbook.
    Problem solved.

  • Getting xterm to behave like Terminal?

    Hi,
The Terminal.app does just about everything I need, but I've noticed since installing 10.6 that occasionally (and sporadically), it steadfastly refuses to paste text that I've just copied from Safari (or from any other application for that matter). I don't know why this happens, and I can't seem to force it to happen. It just does, occasionally.
So I've started using xterm to do stuff like text files and stuff, launching it from bin/launchterms..
+xterm -fn 10x20 -sb -sl 1500 -vb -bg black -fg green -title terminal &+
This is fine, as I have a Sun three-button mouse anyway, so copying and pasting not only works, but is a lot easier.
There are a few issues, though, that I can't find how to configure. For one, I'd like to stop the visual bell from flashing the screen. The -vb switch doesn't seem to achieve this.
Second, is there any way to get my numeric keypad to send digits, instead of control sequences?
Third, can I stop ^d from closing the window? I often run ssh sessions into multiple servers, and if I do one ^d too much when I'm logging out, I lose my window.
    Thanks.

I don't have a NumLock key. It's an 'old' Mac keyboard, the white, tilted ones that they used to sell around the time of the iBook.
    Hang on.......
    fiddles
Ah, yes. The little square with the cross through it. Sorted, many thanks!
Now to check the other responses. Thanks again!

  • Changes to awesome -- xterm windows and stray icon

    Hi All,
I recently upgraded from awesome 3.3.4-1 to 3.4.3-2.  There used to be a setting:
-- Honor size hints: if you want to drop the gaps between windows, set this to false.
    c.size_hints_honor = false
Doing this made my xterm windows take up the whole screen; without it there was a small margin.  That setting doesn't seem to exist in the latest default rc.lua, and so my xterm windows have a border again (specifically, on the right and the bottom).  Any ideas as to how I make this go away?
Also, I use the Opera web browser, and somehow its little red "O" icon ends up stuck in the display that gives the time, justified left.  Any idea what that is about?
In case it matters, my rc.lua is below (minor changes, mostly key bindings, from the default).
    Thanks for any help.

Also, I use the Opera web browser, and somehow its little red "O" icon ends up stuck in the display that gives the time, justified left.  Any idea what that is about?
It doesn't get stuck anywhere, you positioned it there with widget layouts: http://awesome.naquadah.org/wiki/Awesome_3.3_to_3.4

  • How can I get Firefox 3.6 to startup and load at a particular screen position - using cmd-line or other, in a Solaris SPARC/UNIX env? The xterm program uses the -geometry args as a manner of specifying position on the screen.

I am running Firefox 3.6 - on Solaris 10 SPARC env.
I am using the X11 - TWM(X-windows Manager). I have tried to alter the .twmrc files for the WM, but I need firefox to declare the position in the client program, else the TWM will force me to place it every time. When I use the xterm with the "-geometry" I can specify the position the xterm is opened and positioned there automatically. I have tried using the Xresource configuration settings(maybe I am doing something wrong here), but the X-server ignores it... so I believe that only firefox app can manage the positioning?
I am out of ideas, I suppose the next step is to question the source... Any ideas of how I can achieve this auto positioning in TWM. (I have been looking into X-events to manage the placement, but this is messy)

The version of Apache that comes default with Solaris might not be compiled for that I am not positive though. I downloaded and compiled Apach 2 and compiled mod_ssl and got it working with no problems you might want to try that.

  • X11 remote app and XQuartz and xterm Xt error: Can't open display: %s

    Hi
I have Snow Leopard  (10.8.4) and XQuartz on it I need to run X11 remote app on redhat.
On local host echo $DISPLAY shows /tmp/launch-d33HNb/org.macosforge.xquartz:0
When i do ssh -X (or -Y) [email protected] and try to run xterm i got:
xterm Xt error: Can't open display: %s
    xterm:  DISPLAY is not set
the sshd_config on remote host has
    cat /etc/ssh/sshd_config | grep X11
    #X11Forwarding no
    X11Forwarding yes
    X11DisplayOffset 10
    #X11UseLocalhost yes
Question is do i need to set up DISPLAY variable on remote host?
If yes which display number do i choose?
    if i do export DISPLAY=<my mac ip>:10.0 or export DISPLAY=<my mac ip>:0.0
i still have message xterm Xt error: Can't open display: %s
    Maybe this will help also

making the obvious substitutions. Select the line and drag it to the Desktop. It will create an inetloc file that, when double-clicked, opens a Terminal window and connects to the ssh session. I have several of these in my Dock.
That is a neat trick. However, with LaunchPad I'm not much of a Finder double-clicker anymore. What is interesting is that the OS knows how to handle the ssh protocol. You can also type "open ssh://[email protected]" for the same effect. That may not seem like much of a gain, but it reveals some interesting OS-level possibilities.
With an RSA key, I don't even need a password
You can use the newer DSA keys. There is another neat trick too. Pretty much every set of instructions I've seen online suggests using an empty private key password because running ssh-agent is such a hassle on Linux. It is built-in to OS X. So, on OS X, you can create more secure DSA private keys with pass phrases that are stored (and encrypted) in your keychain. You only have to supply the Then, even if someone gets your private keys, they get nothing.

  • X11/xterm on 10.5.8 server broken?

I upgraded from my MacPro server from 10.4.11 to 10.5.8 recently. Since then, X11, or more precisely xterm, appear to be broken. When I click on the X11 app in the dock, it takes much longer to come up with a terminal than it did under 10.4. Furthermore, it does not show me any of the options in the top bar such as
    Applications Edit Window Help
These option are now all gone with 10.5.8. This means that I can't open a second xterm. The xterm app bounces for a long time in the dock and I can see another app that has opened up called Xquartz. Usually, I can't quit xterm even by clicking on the right circle in the top left and have to 'force quit' it because it says that 'Application not responding'.
Any ideas as to what's going on?

Reinstalling X11 from scratch fixed the problem. Not sure what went wrong during initial install.

  • How to install arch 2009.08 from hard drive? Please enlighten me

OK, I admit I am impatient for the installation from the CD drive. Whenever possible and whatever distro I wanna try, I head first to try to install it from the hard drive. I don't remember how many times and how many distros I have done the same to, ubuntu, zenwalk, sidux, fedora, opensuse and of course arch. It rarely failed as long as I followed someone's guide, sth like "install any OS from hard drive", I do not exactly remember. And I did the same in the past with arch. But after 2009.08, it simply didn't work. I've read the article "fast install arch from existing linux system" in the wiki, it didn't work either (by the way, if someone can solve my problem, I think the article should be updated). After it boots, at some stage, it says "Use Hook [archiso]", then tell me "waiting for /dev/archiso for 30 seconds ..." then when the time due, it throws me into a ramfs shell. I've hacked for a long time, but no luck. Then I went back to download the 2009.02 iso, however, it works flawlessly.
I did find some differences in the menu.lst/isolinux.cfg between two version.
    In 2009.02, we have
title Boot Arch Linux Live CD
    kernel /boot/vmlinuz26 lang=en locale=en_US.UTF-8 usbdelay=5 ramdisk_size=75%
    initrd /boot/archiso_pata.img
    While in 2009.08, it is
title Boot Arch Linux Live CD
    kernel /boot/vmlinuz26 lang=en locale=en_US.UTF-8 archisolabel=ARCHISO_AHCOHH6O ramdisk_size=75%
    initrd /boot/archiso_pata.img
I know I can install arch from usb, but I simply wanna know what's wrong here, so guys, if you have any idea, don't hesitate to enlighten me.

Hi, vacant, thanks for the reply. I did not notice you are the author of the article. Actually I missed the head of the article which directs me to another (the amalgamated one you mentioned). I take a look at it, it seems to make things complicated. I still miss the old days: you simply download the iso, mount it and copy all the contents into a separate partition, edit your current grub, then reboot and everything works. I don't understand how Arch could be so evolved to exclude this simple installation scheme. I am not complaining the development of Arch. In my opinion, a distro as flexible as Arch should provide as much installation strategy as possible. In this respect, I think we can learn from Ubuntu or sidux (in sidux, it provides a very convenient kernel parameter called "fromiso" which allows you to install sidux from the plain iso, that means, you even don't have to mount it and copy the contents out of it to a separate partition).

  • [SOLVED] Infinality font bundle not working correctly in urxvt / xterm

I've been using Infinality fonts, and installed them from this:
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/In … le%2Bfonts
The fonts look great in every application, except for terminals (urxvt / xterm, but most likely others as well).
    In my .Xdefaults, I have:
    *urxvt*font: xft:DejaVu Sans Mono:pixelsize=14,style=regular
But using this setting just displays some ugly fallback font, and I got similar results when trying Monospace and others.
    http://i.imgur.com/nMdIMbv.png
I've gathered that the output of "xlsfonts" should include the names of my infinality fonts, but it doesn't look like it does:

I've also tried rebuilding the font cache with "fc-cache -f", but no dice.
I don't understand why fonts work correctly everywhere except for urxvt. Does anyone have any ideas?

  • X11/xterm: can't launch from terminal in Tiger 10.4.11 PPC

[Copied over from another part of this forum (wrong place)]
I have set up my .profile PATH so that 'which' finds xterm via the terminal command line, but invoking 'xterm' gets the response:
xterm Xt error: Can't open display:
What do I need to configure so that the command 'xterm' starts X11 and opens an xterm window?
xterm runs fine from the drop down when I run X11.app
There are no DISPLAY options set anywhere.
Does this work in Tiger? (It does for me in Leopard and SL)
    DN

Tiger will NOT auto launch X11 when you attempt to run an X-Windows based program.
Leopard and Snow Leopard will auto launch X11 when you attempt to run a X-Windows program.
You could change your .profile to
    open -a X11 /usr/X11/bin/xterm

  • [SOLVED] How to get ibus to work in xterm

Can anyone help me get ibus working in xterm? Ibus is working in all my other applications except xterm. In my pre-Arch days I had the same problem in Debian. In Debian I fixed the problem by editing /etc/X11/xinit/xinput.d/default so that it looked like this:
    # This configuration provides default IM setting (user edittable)
    # See im-switch(8) and /usr/share/doc/im-switch/README.Debian .
    # Define IM for traditional X application with XIM
    # XIM server name used for XMODIFIERS="@im=$XIM"
    # XIM program /path/filename
    # XIM program command line arguments
    # These were traditional setting before uim and scim for CJK languages
    # Language LC_CTYPE XIM server XMODIFIERS Start key
    # Japanese ja_JP* kinput2 "@im=kinput2" Shift-Space
    # Korean ko_KR* ami "@im=Ami" Shift-Space
    # Chinese(T) zh_TW.Big5 xcin "@im=xcin-zh_TW.big5" Ctrl-Space
    # Chinese(S) zh_CN.GB2312 xcin "@im=xcin-zh_CN.GB2312" Ctrl-Space
    XIM=ibus
    XIM_PROGRAM=/usr/bin/ibus-daemon
    XIM_ARGS="--xim"
    XIM_PROGRAM_XTRA=
    # Set following variable to non-zero string if program set itself as deamon
    XIM_PROGRAM_SETS_ITSELF_AS_DAEMON=
    # Define GTK and QT IM module
    # They may or may not be using xim as the IM.
    GTK_IM_MODULE=ibus
    QT_IM_MODULE=ibus
    # Define lists of packages neded for above IM to function
    DEPENDS="ibus, ibus-gtk, ibus-qt4"
    # Define X start up hook script to update IM environment
However, Arch does not even have the /etc/X11/xinit/xinput.d directory, so I am a little lost. I think I have all the relevant packages installed (ibus, ibus-m17n, ibus-qt, libibus, xorg-xinput).

    Some more information:
1- The problem is not the font. The font I'm using in xterm supports the special characters.
2- The problem is that xterm ignores ibus completely. When I type "cx" I get the expected "ĉ" in all applications (e.g., firefox, mate-terminal) but xterm just gives me "cx"
    3- I already have this in ~/.bashrc:
    export GTK_IM_MODULE=ibus
    export XMODIFIERS=@im=ibus
    export QT_IM_MODULE=ibus
4- I'm on a laptop, fully updated 64-bit Arch Linux, LightDM, and MATE.
I've googled ad nauseam and this is driving me nuts. Please help.
