Mavericks 9.2 SSH is now admin access only

I have tried every solution out there. Only admins can access my Xserver via SSH. Why are there even two places to enable SSH in Mavericks? It's so frustrating. I have tried turning both locations on/off. Tried setting via serveradmin. Adding users to the allowed list. Rebooting. Still, any non-admin user gets "connection closed" I have users demanding SFTP be working again. Any new solutions (apart from a clean install) please post. This happened immediately after the 9.2 update. When will these stupid bugs be fixed? Where is the prefs setting file for this?

Found it. The login shell for the affected users in WGM was set to none. This was why adding users to the admin group didn't work. Making the login shell for the affected users bin/bash allowed Filezilla to connect. This was not an issue in 9.1, but for security, perhaps it should be. I don't really know why the deafult in WGM is "none" but that's the fix.

  • EA4500, setting 'HTTPs' admin access only, failure CCC upgrading

Got a new EA4500 yesterday, it came with traditional browser-based firmware.
Then I changed its Admin access to HTTPs only, disabled HTTP.
I downloaded CCC upgrading wizard, registered CCC account.
When I tried to upgrade to CCC firmware, it kept trying to detect and finally told 'can not detect a device to upgrade'.
When I enabled HTTP admin access and tried to upgrade CCC again, it worked.
    Does somebody encounter similar issue?
If HTTP enabling is a necessary condition for CCC upgrading, shall such message be prompt at least, when the tool failed to detect applicable device?

Which group are you talking about?
I have a group for all direct access machines, You have to specify this group during the wizard.
The permission issue seems to be related to the script trying to modify group policy
I have tired with the default polices the wizard creates and also specifying 2 blank policies.

  • I have admin access only at work

My IT department did something to give us Admin access to our Mac (or updates, installing software, yoiu name it) WHILE AT WORK.  When I take my Mac home, I cannot update and install.  I continue to get the prompt for Administrator password.  I take it back to work, and I have Administrator access.  How'd they do that, and how do I undo that?
I know how to wipe out an Admin password with an install disk.  That's not what I want to do.  I want Admin access at home as well as at work.  (It is kind of silly not to allow me to update at home, or on the road, especially since I am gone form work for a month.)
    Let me know,

I would have a sit down with my IT department.

  • Clean install of Mavericks, now cannot access Time Machine backups

I just performed a clean install of Mavericks (10.9.1), but now I cannot access my previous backups under Mountain Lion (10.8.5). The new installation recognizes the TM disk just fine, and I can enter TM, but all of my old backups are blacked out. In Finder, I can easily explore the TM disk and see that all of my old backups are intact there. I've got a few large folders (100+ GB) I'd like to restore, but I can't seem to figure out how to get them back correctly. What am I missing?
Thanks in advance for any advice you can offer...

Things just got worse. After manually copying over some files via Finder, and then performing a full backup of the new system, even the NEW backup is blacked out; e.g., NO backups, past or present, are accessible from within Time Machine.
    Help!

    Hi,
have you tried booting your Mac from the recovery partition by holding cmd-r while booting? If that works, then start the Disk Utility from the menu and try a "Repair disk".
After the Disk Utility is finished, try the "Repair Permissions". Though this is a highly overrated "feature", it might even help in your situation. Do this repeatedly until nothing changes. This doesn't mean there won't be any messages left over.
    Cheers,

  • Freecorder asked for admin access & now i don't know what it installed

    hi there!
first time writing a thread.  i stupidly installed freecorder.  it is reknown ... more like notorious for installing all kinds of garbage on windows.  they must have just come up with a dmg for mac - as applian's customer service still has no idea that there's a mac app.  it asked for admin access during install.  briefly afterwards, i realized that that was not normal for an app to do - so i started looking around & sure enough, it's filled with nasty stuff.  i have since deleted the app, but wondering what else it could have left on my computer.  also if there is a way to see what changes it made, or why it even needed access to my admin ...
i'd be grateful for any help.  still getting to know mac.
    thanks,
    adam

It's normal for your Mac to prompt for your admin password when installing apps.
If the app is still in the trash... drag it out of the Trash to the Desktop.
Then install this utility >  Download AppCleaner for Mac - Uninstall your apps easily. MacUpdate.com
AppCleaner will not only uninstall the app but all the associated files.
If you emptied the trash, click the Spotlight icon top right in your screen. Type freecorder in the search field.
Hopefully that will help you find any of the associated files.
You are correct in that it's a nasty one >  http://download.cnet.com/Freecorder/3640-2071_4-11594257.html

  • Help needed restricting users admin access to devices using ACS 4.2

I have users that access the network via a VPN client to a PIX 515 which authenticates to the ACS (using the default group for unknown users) which uses an external Active Directory Database.
The problem I have is that as the ACS authenticates these users, it now allows them admin access to the PIX. How do I restrict access? I have looked at NARs using the 'All AAA clients, *, *' approach but that just stops their VPN access. ( I have a separate group called 'PIX ACCESS' which will contained only defined users for admin access).
Incidentally I have other devices on the network which are AAA clients, in particular Nortel switches. I can set the group settings for that RADIUS set up to 'Authenticate Only' (RADIUS Nortel option) and that works fine, I was expecting the ACS to have a similar setting for TACACS+.
So how do I allow the unknown users to authenticate to their AD database but restrict them admin access to the AAA clients?

Very common problem. I've solved it twice over the last 6 years with ACS. I'm sketchy on the details. But here goes. First option to explore is using RADIUS for VPN access, then TACACS on all the Cisco switches and PIX firewall. That would make it alot easier. I think that with TACACS, you can build a NAR based on TCP port number instead of IP address....
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/sw/secursw/ps2086/products_tech_note09186a0080858d3c.shtml
So you'd have a group with 3-4 Administrators that can access PIX CLI, and another group of VPN users that can't access the PIX but can VPN in. So on the VPN group, put a NAR that restricts access to SSH/Telnet TCP ports?
This comes up everytime I install an ACS server, (every 2-3 years), and it's always a trick.
Please let me know if this works for you. And if it doesn't, let us know how you fixed it. I think I can get back into the ACS I last did this with and take a look, but I'd have to call up and make a special trip.

  • Extended Services upgrade; lost admin access.

While using Cm 3.2.2c and upgrading to ES 2.2.3.b I have lost access to CCMAdmin/main.asp Instead of getting the standard login pop-up window, I now get a web based Administrator access window and it does not recognize my admin password. When I try other valid "users" it tells me that they do not have admin access (which they shouldn't) But I do not know why it does not recognize my admin password. TAC has had me reset the passwords in the services as well as re-installing the +COM services but this has not solved the problem. Does anyone know how to get this password reset? Oddly enough the same login/password works for BAT and Win 2k and SQLSvc (the Subscriber is getting updated) Thanks in advance.

  • Server Admin Access

I have a user who had full remote admin access to her Mac Server from her Mac desktop. We recently changed out her desktop for a new iMac. She no longer has full admin remote access to the server. Did I miss something on the setup of the new machine? She can walk to the server and log in with full admin access, but the remote session does not allow for full admin rights.  Any help would be appreciated.

Remote access via what? Server.app? Server Admin.app? Remote Desktop?
What OS(es) were running previously, what OS(es) are running now?
What admin rights are unavailable (i.e. what can't she do?)

  • Account hacked and admin access transferred to new...

I'm hoping I can get help quickly with this. I have a business account and my user id: "[Removed for privacy]" has been the admin for over a year, since I've opened my account. Recently, my account was hacked from someone from Algeria and administrator access was changed from my id to a different one, that I don't have access to. Then $300 was charged to my credit card and all these Algeria calls were made!!! My bank is refunding the amounts, but still, it put me in a major bind. I would have though that Skype would have seen this fraudulent activity and put a stop to it, but nothing happened.
How on earth do I restore admin access to my user id? Now I can't do anything with the limited access I have.
Thanks in advance for the help.

  • No User, No Admin Access -- Clean install?

The only user on my laptop does not have admin access so i tried to run this to get admin rights:
+I lost my admin user (Mac OS X 10.4 and earlier)+
+If you are unfortunate enough to delete your only admin user, or remove his admin capability, then as long as you have another user with login capability, you can give that user admin rights as shown below. You can then re-create the original user or reinstate the admin capability using NetInfo Manager.+
+Print this post out in a mono-spaced font, and type carefully, paying attention to spaces and punctuation, since you cannot copy/paste in Single User mode.+
+Caution: in single user mode you have root privileges. Be careful! Substitute the name of 'youruser' below.+
+Boot into single user mode (Command-S) at startup which will eventually get you a shell prompt (ending in #). Then type the following:+
    +fsck -fy+
+Repeat the above until it says your disk is OK. Then continue with+
    +mount -uw /+
    +nicl -raw /var/db/netinfo/local.nidb -merge /groups/admin users youruser+
+If you get a message saying "invalid path", then type these two commands first:+
    +nicl -raw /var/db/netinfo/local.nidb -create /groups/admin gid 80+
    +nicl -raw /var/db/netinfo/local.nidb -create /groups/admin passwd '*'+
+and then repeat the "nicl ... -merge" command. Then:+
    reboot
+You will now be able to login as 'youruser' and have administrative privileges.+
+Membership of the 'admin' group is the only thing that distinguishes administrative users from ordinary users.+
Now the computer will boot up but NEVER comes to the desktop. I think my best option is to just clean install. however, the computer will not let me boot from a CD (nor did it before i messed up the user). Is there a way i can wipe the harddrive another way or some other way to reinstall the OS?
    thanks

  • 10.5.2 Kills Admin Access, No Fix.

So after 10.5.2 made my Mac Mini cry (after I solved all the issues it caused on my MacBook) I did an archive and install over it to start over again. I heard the combo update had less issues associated with it, so I processed to update and then 10.5.2 kills admin access on my only account. Which wouldn't be a problem except it is set to auto login and the login screen is set to list.
This would not be a problem still, except Apple had to foresight to not grant root admin access (Long name or short name). So now I have an enabled root account that I can't login to and about 7 wasted hours on this stupid update.
Somebody please tell me there is something I can do.
And yes before you treat me like an idiot I can connect to the screen share with the root account, so I am 100% positive I have the right password.

    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=306876
    which I found at:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1385516&tstart=15
I could not execute the last part of the directions since when I run
Directory Utility.app in the edit menu it says "Enable Root User" not
"Disable" I don't understand that. When you boot up now, at the
login screen there is now a user called "Other." I don't know how
to get rid of that either.

  • Reinstalled maverick on Mac mini 2010 now can't restore files from previous backups

Reinstalled maverick on Mac mini 2010 now can't restore files from previous backups can't even roll back to previous setup

    This is typical Mavericks.
Was the old backup taken from Mavericks install?
Did you already start TM from the new install and thus totally foul up and corrupt your old backup?
You will need to try migrate assistant.. and if that fails you will need to manually pull your files from the old backup if you can still access them.
