Mavericks and NAS drives

Has anyone had any problems with NAS drives and Lion or Mavericks?
Seems that I can only see my drive intermittently - and if I get up and the computer goes to sleep, not ONLY does the computer try to shut down or log me out, I can no longer see my drive.
Is this due to the switch from AFP to SMB2?
Any help or suggestions would be awesome because as of now, Mavericks is making is practically impossible to work.

I've tried all the fixes to mount my Buffalo Terrastation, including the cifs://...all to no avail....I have tried smbup..which looks like it doesn't load anymore in mavs.  I had posted this in the lion board to help others with lion and older NAS's
Somewhere out in the ether I found the instructions and since I can't find them again..I thought I'd post it...There are 2 scripts I use to set the tstationup or reset the system...I entered the following in applescript editor
tell application "Terminal" to activate
do shell script "sudo sysctl -w net.smb.fs.kern_deprecatePreXPServers=0" withadministrator privileges
tell application "Terminal" to quit
and saved it as an app...like tstation smb connect
and the following script to reset..and saved as an app...
tell application "Terminal" to activate
do shell script "sudo sysctl -w net.smb.fs.kern_deprecatePreXPServers=1" with administrator privileges
tell application "Terminal" to quit
end
Saved the apps in applications and run them when necessary..
Not even this works for me..Not a total crisis as I have other online/offline b/u and storage...but its a 1TB raid, so I'd lke to get it working..

  • How to play home movies on TV via Iphone and NAS Drive?

I have a problem playing transferred home movies on a flat screen tv through the “TV Out” feature of my Iphone 4.
    Brief History:
I have captured about a TB worth of various home movie videos from VHS tape to my PC hard drive in AVI format using AVS Video Recorder. I used AVS Video Converter to convert the AVI movie files to M4V files, to play these movies on my IPhone. I then copied these M4V video files to a Western Digital “My Book Live” NAS Drive which allows me to view any video using my Iphone, via a WD app, without using Iphone internal memory. This works so far.
The problem is that I thought I could show these videos to family members through their big screen TV at their house, and by hooking my Iphone to their tv’s audio/video inputs, via cables, using TV Out and access the videos from my NAS Drive as I could when using the Iphone alone. However, the home movies do not play on the TV! After a conversation with Apple Techs I was told that using the Iphone’s “TV Out” feature to view video onto a TV, via the Iphone , only works for video that is stored on the internal memory of the Iphone itself, not for accessing 3rd party drives as my NAS.
I was told that there are ways around this like:
    -    Syncing certain videos to the Iphone (to save storage space) and viewing them on TV via “TV OUT”
    -    Getting an IPad (bigger screen then Iphone) and accessing the videos through the Apple Cloud
    -    Using Apple TV and accessing movies via the cloud (which means I would have to bring and hook-up Apple TV to the receiving TV). Not sure about this method.
    -    Something about Airplay and mirrioring???
So my question is: Is there any way to access my NAS drive (which has all videos stored) and play those videos on another household’s TV, for many people to comfortably view at once, via my Iphone? Or, is there another method?
    Any advice would be appreciated.

    Where should it be?
the playlist option will show next to where "genre" is only if the playlist contains the appropriate content for the section that you are in.
for example i have a playlist that contains all episodes of a season of King Of Queens. the playlist shows in the "my tv shows" section, but does not in "my movies", as the playlist only contains tv shows.
might be an idea not to mix content in playlists, as you won't be able to play mixed content from a playlist anyway.

  • Time capsule and NAS drive Problem

Currently have my TC connected to my wireless router via its only ethernet port.  I want to add a NAS drive but as there is no port left onthe router, can I use one on the TC??

Does your cable modem have an Ethernet port? If it does, then connect an Ethernet cable from the modem to the TC. You do not need to use the WiFi from the cable modem. The TC will provide both wired and wireless networks. The second NAS can be connected via Ethernet cable to one of the LAN ports on the TC.
I use just a cable modem (it does not provide any routing - it's a Motorola SurfBoard) connected by Ethernet cable to the WAN port on an Airport Extreme Base Station which is basically the TC's router but without an internal hard drive. Then any Ethernet device connects to one of the LAN ports on the AEBS.

  • TWO Aiport express in WDS network and NAS drive?

    Hi,
I know this question has been asked several times: one airport express cannot be connected to USB nor NAS drive. But what about TWO airport express?
We now have 2 airport express (b/g) at home presently participating in a WDS network with the following connections:
    - Aiport express #1 (WDS main) - living room
=> ethernet = connected to internet
=> jack = connected to HIFI
    - Airport express #2 (WDS remote) - office room
=> USB = connected to printer
My question is the following: would it be possible to connect the ethernet port of Aiport express #2 to a NAS drive? How has the Airport express #2 to be configured (WDS remote? WDS relay? Connection sharing= "bridge" or "distribute a range of IP"?) for this purpose?
I could not find any clear answer yet on this particular situation.
Thanks in advance for your help with this. I do not want to buy a NAS drive and realize that it does not work...

My question is the following: would it be possible to connect the ethernet port of Aiport express #2 to a NAS drive?
    Yes that should work.
How has the Airport express #2 to be configured (WDS remote? WDS relay? Connection sharing= "bridge" or "distribute a range of IP"?) for this purpose?
Either WDS remote or relay should work. You do not want it distributing IP addresses. Configuring it as a WDS remote or relay should automatically prevent this setting.

  • Help with Cisco ASA 5500 and NAS drives

    Hello:
I have 2 My Book World Edition II NAS drives. They both are configured to use a static IP address and both are on the same workgroup.
One of them is supposed to be replaced with a newer one that I just installed yesterday.
What I am trying to do is to transfer all the information from NAS1 to NAS2.
Both are connected to a Cisco VPN router.
I created a batch file that was basically several xcopy commands to copy all the information from NAS1 to NAS2.
As this process was going to take like 8 hours I ran the batch file yesterday at 4:00PM when everyone was logged off the NAS drives.
To my surprise this morning I found out that only a portion of the files were copied from the NAS1 to the NAS2.
After reading the system logs of the NAS1 drive I found a lot of errors. For example:
getpeername failed. Error was Transport endpoint is not connected
Error writing 4 bytes to client. -1. (Connection reset by peer)
write_data: write failure in writing to client 192.168.10.105. Error Connection reset by peer

write_data: write failure in writing to client 0.0.0.0. Error Connection reset by peer

Someone suggested that the problem has to do with the network configuration.
The suggestion was to change from "auto-negotiate" to  Full Duplex 100 on the Cisco VPN router configuration.
What do you think? Could this be the problem?

  • NAS drives grayed out and can't connect to other Macs

    Hello All,
After upgrading my 15-inch, Mid 2010 MacBook Pro to Mavericks (10.9 13A603) my NAS storage drives are grayed out in Finder. I can't go directly to my NAS drive in Finder. I can't simply click on the NAS drives in Finder and see what is in the directory. The directories are grayed out!.
In order for me to connect to my NAS stotage drive I have to go to "DEVICES" on the leftside of the Finder window and then click on the MacBook Pro HD. From there I have to click on "Network." From "Network" I can get a slow connection to my NAS.
As for as connection to other Macs in my office, I have to take the same steps above. I can't connect directly to the other Macs in my office in Finder. Nether can the other Macs connect to other Macs! All Macs in the office are set up to allow both AFP and SMB. However, one lonely 2009 iMac in our office is still on Mountian Lion and it can connect to other Macs and the our NAS without problems.
One strange things this, I can do a Screen Share to the other Macs from my 2010 MacBook Pro! I can't connect directly in Finder, but I can do a Screen Share. Strange!
Is there a fix for this or was Marverick let out the jungle to earily?
    Help! and Thanks!

I forgot to add that everything was previously connected via an Airport express wireless system. I just got an Airport Extreme system which hasn't changed things a bit.

  • HT1449 Can I move my iTunes library onto Time Capsule and share it across my devices (similar to a NAS drive)?

    Hi
Would anyone know if I can I move my iTunes library onto Time Capsule and share it across my devices (similar to a NAS drive)?
This would give me some hard drive space on my iMac and more importantly mean my iTunes library is available all the time. Although I have Home sharing I need my iMac on and if not I use iTunes on iCloud I always seem to be downloading the tracks I need.
    Current configuration / devices:
    iMac 20-inch, Mid 2007 - nearly full!
Processor  2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    Memory  4 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM
    OSX Mavericks
    Time Capsule (1TB)
    iPad
    iPod Touch
    Apple TV
    iTunes 11.1.5 (5)
    Many thanks

What "devices" are these?  By devices I normally understand i-devices and not computers.  How many computers?
If you put the whole library on the Time Capsule (TC) you can only use it with one computer at a time because the iTunes library file can only be opened by one copy of iTunes at a time.  If you put only media on the TC but have a copy of the library files on each computer you can use media by multiple computers but you then have the headache of trying to make sure that any changes done to the collection by one computer are mirrored by the libraries on the other computers which will be more or less independent.
I hope this TC isn't also your backup drive.  When the TC drive fails (and it will someday) then your whole collection is gone.  Don't rely upon Apple to always have copies for you to download.  For one, if a distributor puylls an item then it is gone period.  Additionally, Apple only keeps media, not the actual organization that is your set of library files.  If you do this, buy another backup drive.

  • Trouble with MS Word for Mac 2008 file open from LaCie NAS drive after installing Mac OS X 10.9 Maverick.

Since installing Max OS X 10.9 "Maverick" when I open Word documents from my LaCie NAS drive they open as empty documents. When I copy them to my local hard drive and then open them the content is fine. Has anyone else run into this? I contacted LaCie and they said "we do not support OS X or MS Word so talk to Apple and Microsoft. I have a thread with Microsoft and here is one with Apple.
    Thanks

I suspect that the issue with the EFI partition is unrelated to your Mac’s slow performance. I have had this same error message with Disk Utility. The EFI partition is related to firmware updates, and as it is not even booted when you boot from your usual boot drive, it is not relevant. (I was able to repair the EFI partition with Techtool Pro 7 , though, but then it reappeared, which makes me think it is a bug with Disk Utility.)
I’d uninstall the following items, which are frequent flyers on the list of culprits for misbehaving macs:
    Blackberry
    google keystone agent
    Chrome
Perian stopped being supported by the developer before Mountain Lion, so I doubt that it’s compatible with Mavericks.
I have the same 8,2, BTW, and it is very fast. I like Kappy's suggestion. If getting rid of those 4 items above doesn't fix the problem, then a clean install (and not reinstalling your old "utilities" or other junk) will.

  • Macbook pro can't see NAS drive since Mavericks upgrade

    Equipment:
13" Macbook pro (mid 2010) running Mavericks 10.9.4, Processor  2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, Memory  16 GB 1067 MHz DDR3, Graphics  NVIDIA GeForce 320M 256Mb, Crucial SSD 240Gb, Seagate Goflex Home NAS drive 2TB, Wifi network is BT Infinity.
Since upgrading to Mavericks, my macbook pro cannot see the Goflex Home drive on the network at all. I am confident that the problem lies within Mavericks as the Goflex Home drive can be accessed perfectly on the same network using my older PowerMac, my iPad and my iPhone. Also, the NAS is accessible via the internet through the Seagate Share facility.
Can anyone help me get Mavericks to see my drive?
Any help will be much appreciated.
    Thanks.

Thanks Csound1 for your suggestion but I checked that I was on the most up to date version of software. I have been successful though in establishing contact with the NAS by following the steps outlined here:
    http://support.seagate.com/kbimg/flash/215555/215555_EN.swf
It means that I have to 'connect with server' through the 'Go' menu in Finder each time now and I would like to know how I can make this happen automatically each time I boot up my MBP.
    Thanks.

  • Purchased TV and Movie artwork not showing in iTunes 10.6.1 when stored on a NAS drive

    Hi All
Having searched through the forums here and using Google to cast a wider net.
I am still struggling to see if there is a solution to the missing artwork of TV programmes or films missing when stored on a NAS drive.  All the TV programmes and movies have been purchased through the iTunes store.
The version of iTunes being used is the most recent (10.6.1).
The network drive is hardwired linked to the AirPort Extreme Base Station, this base station is also hardwire linked to the iMac.  The iTunes library resides upon a DROBO FS and has done since it filled the storage capabilities of the iMac.
TV and Films purchased before the migration of the library has the artwork, it is just films and programmes purchased since the migration that don't.
Clicking "Get Album Artwork" has no effect, the same is also true for manually adding the artwork to each episode through the "Get Info" "Artwork" option.  Although the "Get Info" route teases you with an apparent result only to have the artwork "vanish" when you save.
I have seen a solution that involves remapping the iTunes library to the iMac each time you want to download a TV programme or film and then remounting the NAS drive and consolidating the library again, http://www.online-tech-tips.com/mac-os-x/fix-missing-album-art-when-using-a-nas- with-itunes/
This doesn't strike me as much of a solution and doesn't address the TV programmes and films that have already been downloaded.
I am hoping someone in the community is aware of a solution or at least method that is a little more elegant than the one linked to above.
    Thanks in advance,
    Mark

The Apple TV 1 doesn't use homesharing.
Navigate to Settings > Computers > Your Library on the Apple TV, you may be told you will lose all synced content, but you can sync it back afterwards, you won't lose any purchased content that has yet to be transferred. Then select Settings > Computers > Connect To iTunes, note the passcode that appears on screen, click on the device in iTunes and enter the passcode when prompted.

  • ITunes, Apple TV, a NAS drive and Time Capsule - an idiot's guide

    Hi,
I really need some help, and even though I know the information is already on the web, I just need someone to tell me what to do in my circumstance.
I have a new Macbook with 250GB hard drive which is now almost full! I have an Apple TV box which is also almost full. I have a 320GB Iomega NAS which is not almost full as I haven't really used it properly and I have just got a 1TB Time Capsule as I'm petrified of losing everything!
I have just over 175GB of music and films/tv programmes. I have also just finished making sure all the album artwork is correct (I know - very sad!).
Currently the entire library is on my Macbook. I backed it up to the NAS drive (although I did it via a USB connection rather than over my home network).
With only about 23GB of space left on my Macbook I decided the time was right to use the NAS properly. (I only really want to use the Time Capsule as a back up, although I guess there is probably a problem there as well if I move everything of importance (i.e. the music and films) to the NAS but lets leave that one for the time being.
Basically what I want to know is how to use itunes with the NAS so that the music and films etc are stored on the NAS but not the rest of the information (the itunes database and album art folders).
I tried it before and it kind of worked but the first time it update the library file and having just sorted out all the album artwork I don't want to have to do it again.
I should say that I am the only one in the house who uses itunes, my laptop, am the only one with an ipod and iphone, so there is no issue with someone sharing the library or anything like that.
So, question 1 - how do I set up itunes to work with the NAS.
Question 2 - in doing so, will I have to correct all the artwork again?
Question 3 - if all the music etc is on the NAS, how do I back it up to the Time Capsule?
A more complicated question is can I keep the music on my laptop and films/tv programmes on the NAS?
Will all of this make the Apple TV box stop working?
Finally, I have already found an apple script which automounts the NAS and then starts itunes as I have read that that can cause a problem.
    Thanks for any/all your help.
    Anthony

There isn't a solution, the Apple TV will only read your iTunes library if iTunes is running and will only play content through iTunes.

  • I have multiple devices (imacs, lap tops and ipads) all connected to a NAS server.  Can I create a user for myself and one for my wife, and each have our own apple ID, and Itunes accounts, but all share the same media on NAS drives?

I have multiple devices (iMacs, Lap tops, Ipads) all connected to a Nas Drive.  Can I create a user for myself and one for my wife and we each have our own apple ID's, Itunes etc, but share the same data on the hard drives?  So when she logs in, and sync's her ipads, they will sync with her stuff and when I do the same under my user account, on the same device, my ipads will sync with my stuff?

You can share the same Apple ID for purchasng form the iTunes and app stores without any problems, but you should all used separate iCloud accounts with separate Apple IDs.  (You are not required to use the same ID for iCloud and other services as you do for the iTunes store.)  This will prevent you from ending up with merged data.  You should also use separate Apple IDs for iMessage and FaceTime or you will end up getting each other's text messages and FaceTime calls.

  • Thinking about storing my iPhoto and iTunes on a NAS Drive

    Hi,
I am thinking about buying a LaCie Network Space MAX NAS Drive and I just wanted to know if anyone else is using one and can provide some insights or advice. I have a the following set up:
    - Macbook pro
    - Macbook air
    - Apple TV
    - Airtport Extreme
    - 2 x iPhones
    - iPhoto album over 150Gb
    - iTunes library over 800Gb
I have been running the iPhoto and iTunes off a 1.5tb USB WD external hard drive attached to the Airport USB. It has been working but has been slow but a few days ago the drive became corrupt. I have been able to recover the data but I am now looking at other options for storing iPhoto and iTunes externally.
I can't help but think I am not the only person in this situation. I find managing these large data libraries really annoying and I think apple should be offering a better solution to this problem. I think most peoples' iTunes and iPhoto libraries are too big or getting too big to run on a portable computer's internal hard drive. Anyway that is my moan for this post.
Does anyone have any ideas on a good set up for this situation? And if you are using a LaCie Network Space MAX drive is it working for you?

Same exact problem in my case... thinking same Lacie Network Space could help...
    Any idea ?

  • I have downloaded the tv shows Homeland and Dexter. They have ended up in different places. Dexter is where is "belongs" in my itunes library on my NAS drive. Homeland ended up on my hard drive in the itunes/music/tvshows directory. Anyone know why?

Several months ago I bought and downloaded Homeland. Earlier this month I bought
Dexter Season 7. They have ended up in different directories. My iTunes library is
on a NAS drive and Dexter was stored there (where it belongs). For some reason,
Homeland got saved to my Mac hard drive in the itunes/music/tvshows directory.
This seems odd everything else I have downloaded, music, other tv shows, movies
have been saved to the proper place. I haven't changed the path to my iTunes
    library in years.
Now, iTunes has kept track of these two tv shows and I synced them both
to my iPad. The only reason I know they are in different places
is because my wife couldn't find them on the NAS drive.
Mostly out of curiosity, I'd like to know why this happened and how to keep it from
    happening again.
Oh, it's iTunes 11.0.3 running on a MacBook Pro with OS X 10.6.8.
    Thanks
    Bob

I don't think it is easy to move part of a collection unless you don't care about the metadata such as date added, etc.  You can copy the files to the other drive, delete in iTunes the references to the copies still on your computer, then hold down the option key while dragging the files on the external to iTunes so it doesn't copy them back to your internal but just references them where they are.  You have to remember to do this each time.  Either that, or set preferences so iTunes does not automatically copy any file to your media folder when added but leaves them all where they land on your computer.  You can move them by hand around the computer, but not between drives.
You could try Dougscript "Move Files To Folder" but I don't know if this enables iTunes to track items moved to a different drive.  iTunes doesn't really like using multiple drives.
As for using Time Capsule, I have seen various takes on this.  I recall reading somebody saying it isn't a good idea to have a backup drive competing for dual purposes.  My take on it is, TC is a backup, period.  If you keep your movies on it and the TC drive dies, you lose your only copy of the movies.
How often do you really watch these movies?  Yes, it is nice having them appear in iTunes, but unless you are watching them every day then it isn't a huge burden to have them on another drive.  Frankly, if I had iTunes movies I would probably make a whole different library for them and start from it with the external drive turned on when I was in a movie mood.

  • Regarding Artwork and managing of iTunes Movie files on a NAS Drive

My Macbook hard drive was virtually full so like many other people in my situation I made space by moving my Movies and TV folders from iTunes media to a NAS networked hard drive connected to my network router at home.  That's great, freed up loads of space and when I'm home my iTunes wirelessly finds it and can even stream the content via my Apple TV.  My question now though is how do I add artwork to movie files that I have ripped from my DVD's?  I've been going into the info pane and adding artwork as I normally do and clicking ok, but then nothing changes.  It's as if iTunes cannot write the artwork image to the file on the NAS drive, or connect the thumbnail to it.
This has led me to question how do I now add a new movie file to my iTunes if the folder is located on a NAS drive now.  I also normally add a movie file to my iTunes library and then amend it's metadata i.e. the video type (movie/TV Shows), add artwork etc.  My concern is that I'm not sure how to add more files and also once I do I cannot seem to amend the metadata.
Does anyone have experience in this and can they explain how best to do it.

I have a similar setup with an iMac and media library on a TC and can add some converted movies but not all and changes to metadata don't save.  Files aren't hidden somewhere in Home movies.  I thought it was a format issue so switched to m4v Apple format and found that i can add some to the library but not others.  Any that do add, don't take changes to the metadata - no error message, just doesn't process.  Interestingly, I recently upgrades from a Windows pc to the Mac and under Windows it worked perfectly!
