Mavericks mail server "user unknown" error

For some reason, the mail server bounces the email sent to local network users and returns a "user unknown" error. The same error is received when an email from an external domain is sent to one of the open directory associated email addresses.
However, sending email from these accounts works just fine, just like sending and receiving email associated with the diradmin account.

Hi Jeffrey,
Changed the mx record to the juffrou......net domain, without succes.
Please find the export below.

Lex

  • Mavericks mail server stops distributing group email after a few hours of usage

I've been having problems with our Mavericks mail server ever since our upgrade with group mail.
The server will distribute group email for a few hour, then it simply stops working.
No error message, no bounces, and the server keeps the incoming mail in its incoming queue.
Restarting the mail services by either server.app or serveradmin mail stop; serveradmin mail start command like  are the only way I can get it to continue to distribute the email.  I suspect it has to do with postfix itself hiccuping?  But this is a reproducable problem.
Mail filtering is on, score set to 6, 10 mb limit, spamhaus is active.
Looking for tips on how to stablize this service short of setting up cron job to restart the services every few hours.

I know this is not the fix you are looking for, but it's what I had to do, so I thought I'd share.
Hopefully, someone will be able to figure it out the "right" way!
I created this AppleScript that will stop and start the mail service every hour.
You can copy and paste it into AppleScript Editor, compile it and save it as an application.  You can then run it.  You need to run it from an administrator account and keep that user logged in.
If once an hour (every 3600 seconds) is too often, just change 3600 to however many seconds you want.
Be sure to change AdminPassword with the Admin user's actual password.
    repeat
do shell script "/Applications/Server.app/Contents/ServerRoot/usr/sbin/serveradmin stop mail" password "AdminPassword" with administrator privileges
      delay 60
do shell script "/Applications/Server.app/Contents/ServerRoot/usr/sbin/serveradmin start mail" password "AdminPassword" with administrator privileges
              delay 3600
    end repeat

  • Mail for Exchange: "Unknown Error"

I don't wanna open new post about the problem with MfE so i will post here...
So, I've donwloaded MfE, install it and now I'm trying to configure my account. First there is some Nokia privacy policy screen, Agree-->Check-->Next. Now there is Credentials screen, Email-typed, Domain-typed, Username-typed,Password-typed. My question here is next: are username and password the one from my Nokia account, or is it something else? Next screen is also Credentials, but now I have fields: Email-typed, Server-typed, Domain-typed, Username-typed (the one from Nokia account), Password-typed (the one from Nokia account), Use SSL-no --> Go -->Checking your credentials with the server --> UNKNOWN ERROR.
Please can anyone help me to properly configure my mail acc, I need this for my buisness mail urgently!
Moderator's note: we have created a new topic for your post so that other users can easily help you and we have edited its subject as well for it to be more related to your concern.

You've done a good job troubleshooting this and it seems like strange problem. First I've heard of this anyway.
    Can you tell me:
    - Are you using the servername only, without M-S-A, in the name, meaning only the "server" portion in https://server/Microsoft-Server-Activesync?
If not, our client is appending another M-S-A, meaning it's looking for
    https://server/Microsoft-Server-Activesync/Microsoft-Server-Activesync
which is not valid and will result in 404.
    - Also try not using the domain namein domain setting (leave it blank). This is optional in MfE. I've seen this solve problems in some unusual cases.

  • Mavericks Mail server in multi doamins

I am using os x server 3.0.2 in mavericks, i want to enable multi domain login on mail server.
    for example:
    [email protected] is user1
    [email protected] is user2
In "Users", i can't use @ in Account Name, so i set the Full Name to "[email protected]".
I try to use "Mail.app" to login [email protected], but it can't.
It says "Trying to log in to this IMAP account failed. Verify that the username and password are correct."
If i change the Full Name to info_domain1.com and use "Mail.app" to login info_domain1.com, it can login.
So, it is possible to set users in full email address and i can use full email address to login in the "Mail.app"?

I know this is not the fix you are looking for, but it's what I had to do, so I thought I'd share.

  • Mail Server User Issues

I recently had a Mail server crash and the RAID it lie on did its rebuild. Afterwards all my accounts seem to be working fine except one.
I have an IMAP account setup, locally administered. The user can log in with their credentials from a client software, the user can send emails. But the user cannot receive new emails, and some of their mail folders, especially their inbox, is not populating. The sent folders are populating thou.
Its almost like have the services work and the other half doesn't. Iv looked at different permissions and folders and I cant seem to find what may be causing only one user isn't able to access mail.
Mail Server 10.6 with postfix and dovecot.
    Any suggestions?

The roundcube db schema needs to setup manually. See /usr/share/webapps/roundcube/INSTALL
    Also, from your /etc/webapps/postfixadmin/config.inc.php:
    $CONF['domain_path'] = 'NO';
    $CONF['domain_in_mailbox'] = 'YES';
    $CONF['maildir_name_hook'] = 'NO';
    ..which results in /var/mail/vmail/[email protected]
    From your dovecot.conf
    mail_home = /var/mail/vmail/%d/%u
    ...which results in /var/mail/vmail/domain.com/user
    That doesn't fit together.

  • SFTP in Krusader as user: "Unknown error"

    Hello,
I would like to connect to various sftp-servers using Krusader, but most* of my attempts fail, and I get the following error message:
    Unknown error:
    SFTP error: 1
Execution of the ssh program didn't succeed.
    (1st line verbatim, 2nd and 3rd backtranslation.)
Fish now seems to be working, but it was not always so, I used to get:
The process for the fish://<myserver> protocol died unexpectedly.
    (verbatim)
Command line ssh/sftp works flawlessly, smb through Krusader too.
However, if I run Krusader as root, both sftp and fish works.
    Moving ~/.kde4 or ~/.ssh doesn't help.
Maybe relevant: I use a non-default port for ssh.
I have both kdebase-runtime and kdelibs installed (mentioned in this thread), however I don't have a full KDE installed, I use Openbox. After an sftp attempt, 'ps -e' lists kio_sftp.
(It's possibly not some "recent Syu" bug, I have never tried it under Arch before.)
I'm actually out of ideas how to continue debugging, anybody else?
    Thanks in advance.
*Actually it succeeds if it is my very first ssh/sftp activity since the last reboot. So I can reenable sftp-ability in Krusader by rebooting; restarting just Krusader, X or remote sshd doesn't help.

When you send mail to that "bad account", check the ldap access log. Suspect that there's a duplication of mail address with somebody having the same alternate address.
Look at that access log, for the search, and note the result. If "nentries=2", that's the problem

  • How To Fix Mavericks Mail Unable To Connect Error

Mavericks Mail.app stopped being able to authenticate to any IMAP or POP mail servers -- my own OS X Server.app, iCloud, Gmail, etc. iOS clients could connect just fine, and I see that many, many others are having this problem as well. I solved this, but essentially by throwing in the towel and using these posts to bring Mavericks Mail and the login Keychain to their factory settings.
The following worked for me, and blowing away the Mail settings and Keychain were both necessary. If anyone has a less drastic solution, please post it. Make sure you backup any necessary certificates or messages before wiping this all out.
    sudo rm -fr ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.mail ~/Library/Saved\ Application\ State/com.apple.mail.savedState* ~/Library/Application\ Support/AddressBook/MailRecents-v4.abcdmr* ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.mail ~/Library/Mail ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail*
    Keychain Access>Preferences>Reset My Default Keychain
I also used Disk Utility to fix permissions and did a safe boot to clear out a bunch of cache, though these steps didn't fix this specific problem.

I posted too soon -- this problem reappeared. Per this article and Apple support page, luckily a simple rekerberization of the OD Master fixes the problem. My fingers are crossed that it stays fixed.
    This worked:
    sudo touch /var/db/openldap/migration/.rekerberize
    sudo killall PasswordService
    # start Server.app, restart Mail

  • SMTP Error 5.1.1 ... User Unknown Error

    Hi All,
I have installed Sun Java System Mesaaging Server 2005Q4 version. I have to configure the domain such that it doesnt conflict with the default domain in the organization. Say, if the default domain is abc.com, I have to a create a domain x123.abc.com where x123 will be the hostname.
I am not sure if this is possbile, but when I tried to sent email by making x123.abc.com as my default domain I get the SMTP error 5.1.1 while trying to send the mail.
It would be really helpful if someone could help me.
    Thanks & Regards,
    Soma.

Hi and thanks for the response,
Firstly I am not using MX and x123 will be my host machine where I have installed my Messaging. I am not using smtp auth, I am addressing the message to [email protected].
    And for Jay,
I tried to send mail from and to the admin user [email protected].
I ran the command imsimta and the result is below,

Either check the correctness of the hostname/port, or check your network settings (firewall, router, etc).

  • Send test e-mail message: An unknown error occurred, error code: 0x80004005.

I can only receive emails not send.  Just started yesterday.

this really works I fooled with this for days
This change to the SMTP server seemed to fix the error in sending messages from iCloud in Outlook:
    p06-smtp.mail.me.com

  • Send test e-mail message: An unknown error occurred, error code: 0x80004005 when send outgoing email. used to work fine.

Can anyone help with this? Have tried reinstalling iCloud. Just happened suddenly after working fine on PC with Outlook 2013.

Some people have fixed this by changing the outgoing SMTP server to p06-smtp.mail.me.com.  You could give it a try and see if it would work for you.

  • Trying to download Maverick, and keep getting "an unknown error has occurred'

Trying to install maverick, keep getting 'an unknown error has occured' message when I try to login to my apple account

Just saw the post from makras.
There are always a few problems with a new OS. Apple can't police every maker of crapware that's on the planet.
If you have a WD external drive, I would transfer (not clone) the files from it to another non-WD external drive that doesn't have crapware on it, and then erase the WD drive, and then never ever again buy a WD drive.
You will find many posts on the Apple Discussions from disgruntled narcissists (a few borderlines too) who blame Mavericks for their computer problems.
Mavericks is excellent (at least for me).
Every new OS has some incompatibilities with older software. That's why if someone is an early adopter, they should understand this, and if they have a low tolerance for frustration, or are uncomfortable with basic mac maintenance and troubleshooting, they should not be an early adopter.
Seems like the vast majority of problems that people complain about on the forums are related to crapware they have acquired on their computers from previous installations and promiscuous downloading habits.

  • Why do I get an "unable to connect - There may be a problem with the mail server or network." message from iCloud.  I have verified the settings.  I can access my iCloud account online but can't send or receive e-mail via the mail account.

Text limits to the "Question" link prevents a full explanation:
This is a long-time problem.  I have tried to resolve it with Apple but their "Customer Support" is merely a name.
I can go online and access my e-mail but when I try to send or receive e-mail via iCloud through my internet server (Google fiber now but the same situation existed with my prior service), I receive "There may be a problem with the mail server or network.  Verify the settings for 'Apple Email' and try again.
"The server returned the error:  The server 'p0-imap.mail.me.com' refused to allow a connection on port 143."
Well, I have verified the setting and tried again and again and …
Well, you get the idea …

Enter your Incoming Mail Server, User Name, and Password using the following settings:
    Incoming Mail Server: mail.me.com
User Name: Your iCloud email address (excluding @me.com)
    Password: Your password
    Last Modified: Jun 27, 2013
Maybe you should test these things before calling people out, because these settings do function perfectly well.
iCloud is not supported on Snow Leopard or lower, why bother to mention it?
The OP has an iCloud account, and that can not be opened without Lion or Mountain Lion (on a Mac), IOS5 or 6 (on an iPhone/iPad)
The document I linked to is Apples documentation for iCloud on current devices,I don't care whether you believe that you know better than they do, but it will affect the people who follow your advice as it won't work

Also, if you're not running Lion or Mountain Lion, there is no "Mail, Contacts & Calendars" prefpane.
I never said that there was, perhaps you imagined it.
