Mavericks server upgrade

I have just bought this mac mini server, with OSX 10.8.5 and server app ver 2.0.23 pre-installed. Made the recommendede upgrades, but maveriks is not listed.
So, I can't find how to upgrade the server to a mavericks server. Or is it that I have to upgrade to a standard mavericks in the mini, then pay a $20 to upgrade the server app 3.01?

First you need to upgrade to OS X Mavericks, and then you have to purchase OS X Server in the Mac App Store. You cannot upgrade to OS X Mavericks directly.
Before doing anything, make a backup of your files with Time Machine and check that your apps are compatible > http://www.roaringapps.com

  • 10.6.8 to Mavericks Server Upgrade loses Open Directory Users

    Hi,
I have an OpenDirectory Master running OSX Server 10.6.8. An upgrade to Mavericks 10.9 has just failed.
The server has about 50 OD users and passwords need to be retained across the upgrade. Apart from OD, the only other active service is AFP file sharing.
DNS is good forward and back as per this article: OS X Server: Steps to take before upgrading or migrating the Open Directory database
I followed these Apple guidelines for server migration: OS X Server: Upgrade and migration from Lion Server or Snow Leopard Server.
I cloned the boot drive, booted from the clone, upgraded to Mavericks, then installed the Mavericks Server app.
On opening the Mavericks Server app "Configuring services' showed for 5 minutes, but then an error message appeared. I did not record it exactly, but it was something like, "There was an error configuring the server. Certificate not valid!".
I was able to continue through the error but on opening Server app there were no OD (local/network) users showing. Authentication was not happening.
I had underestimated the time to get the installation done and I had used up the window of downtime I had booked - I did not have much time to troubleshoot. So, I cut back to the original hard drive and the server is back to 10.6.8 again.
Can anyone point me in the right direction to find out what may have gone wrong? How can I get my users into 10.9 Server?
    Many thanks,
    b.

Linc Davis advice is spot-on, as usual.
There seem to be dozens of sub-databases in the LDAP database. A problem in any of them seems to derail the entire conversion process. I tried a straight conversion and was also disappointed that there were unresolved issues, and it meant that the conversion failed.
So I did the export route using WorkGroup Manager, and exported four sets:
    Users
    Groups
    Computers
    Computer groups
go to the appropriate pane (e.g., Users) and Select All, then choose Export, and give it a name (probably with an embedded date in case you need to do it again later)
Then use 10.9 WorkGroup Manager (available as a separate download) to Import.
When re-imported, everything worked just fine (except the passwords, which cannot be carried forward using this method). I did have to manually enable at least one service, such as File Sharing service in Server [admin], or users showed up as "not allowed" [to log in].
This entire process of getting Server 3 to work is fraught with peril, and everything converges on ONE diagnostic, "Network users can't log in". Which means you blew it, but provides no additional information about WHERE you blew it.
There do not appear to be any magic bullets. It is just a tough slog. Users who reported success after failing the first time reported they returned to fundamental principles and did all the steps over, in order, to attain success.

  • OS Lion Server to OS Mavericks Server Upgrade Advice Needed

    a) Has anyone successfully done this on a corporate, AD bound, production, 10.7.5 Lion Server server with active Profile Manager accounts, 3rd party certificates, file sharing etc?  I'd like to assess probabilities of getting this done without having to rebuild a machine and re-enroll all of my profile manager clients.
    b) Can anyone provide high level steps towards achieving this goal - or - is the following general upgrade path correct?
    1) Upgrade OS Lion (which is running OS Lion Server) to OS Mavericks - THEN:
    2) Upgrade OS Lion Server to OS Maverics Server
    c) Is anyone running OS Lion Server successfuly in a corporate or professional arena and supporting the items above in red?  If so, what are some of the "gotcha's" you ran across?
Q: Why am I wanting to upgrade from OS Lion Server to OS Mavericks?
A: Just discovered that OS Lion Server Software Update Service (SUS - now "caching server?) doesn't support Mavericks clients.
Note: I do keep an updated SuperDuper image of the system/startup drive.
    Thanks.

Same issue with me. I am a new mac user, actually Mac Minii server is my first mac. I am not interested inthe server aspect but rather the pure Lion as I also plan to install bootcamp with windows 7. (Sorry but I am not ready for a full pc to mac migatrion). Being the only user of the mac mini does ot make sense to have the full server installed.
Please help !!! Idiot (yours trully) proof guide will be highly appreciated. Thanks

  • After Mavericks Server upgrade: cannot start DNS

    Hi,
the upgrade to Mavericks went smooth on my Mac Mini, and also the upgrade of the Server App except on issue. I switched off DHCP an DNS before upgrading, but I cannot turn on DNS again. It will turn off instantly. I deleted the records and reentered all them with no success. I also tried "sudo rm /var/db/.ServerSetupDone" which will run the Server App like the first time, but all settings and my DNS error remain. What can I do? How can I reset DNS settings or all Server App settings?
    Thank you
    Peter

Same problem here on my test server -> DNS turn on and instantly turned off
Solution from raimattern solved the problem
Got this from another list here and that was the solution:
The plist that you need to edit (as root) is /var/db/launchd.db/com.apple.launchd/overrides.plist
There will be a value in there for org.isc.named.
Set that Disabled value to False.

  • Upgrade from 10.6.8 to Mavericks server: issue with authenticated bind

Hello, I have tried upgrading a 10.6.8 server to 3.1.2 Mavericks server and found I can't bind 10.9.x clients.
I need to keep using authenticated bind to manage clients in Workgroup Manager
I have exported the 10.6.8 OD database and imported into a clean installation of Mavericks 3.1.2 server and everything went fine that far.
I then noticed that authenticated bind in Mavericks now requires SSL and the certiicate.
Once I have imported the 10.6.8 OD database into the new server (same name and IP), only the selfsigned certificate coming from the 10.6.8 server is being imported and OD service remains "unprotected" without any certificate assigned (it seems I can't change this)
The problem is I can successfully bind 10.8.x clients against the 10.9 server while this seems not to be possible with 10.9.x clients when using authenticated bind.
If I create a new OD domain, there's an intemediate certificate assigned by default and I can bind 10.9.x clients (authenticated bind).
    Am I missing something obvious?
    Many thanks for your help
    Cheers

Hello and many thanks to all for your hints
@Strontium90 I am aware I should move to profiles and I am working towards this goal, but I had mixed results as far as reliability here.
Anyway, I took my time to perform the upgrade once again from scratch and it's defenatly something related to certificates
The only way to (authenticated) bind a 10.9 test client is when I create a new OD domain and the server uses the intemediate certificate that it's automatically created and assigned to OD service
Using the sefl-signed certificate (the existing one - that is imported along with the OD DB - or a new one assigne to it) does not work with the imported DB.
This is the error I get when I try to bind with dsconfigldap
    iMac-di-admin:~ admin$ sudo /usr/sbin/dsconfigldap -vsemgx -a my.ODserver.FQDN.com

  • Snow leopard server upgrade to Mavericks server?

I have a snow leopard server it is possible to upgrade it to Mavericks server?

This support article has a lot of details.
Refer to :  OS X Server: Upgrade and migration from Lion Server or Snow Leopard Server
Your existing server sounds like it is reliable, configured correctly, has reliable backups and since you only have one service running, worst case would be to recreate the shares  and permissions once on new OS with a purchase  and installation of  Server.app 3.x from the App Store.
    Cheers

  • Smooth transition from Mountain Lion Server to Mavericks Server 3.0!!

After an new OS release that are always complaints about installation and configuration problems. First comers to using any new software tool provide valuable feedback we generally hope will help improve the new product. It's how things have worked since the first 6503 Apple II's and 8086 IBM PC's.
I've been using and upgrading PC's since THOSE DINOSAURS! And I can't remember EVER having an OS upgrade go as smoothly as my recent upgrade from Mountain Lion Server (OS X 10.8.5 w. Server 2.2.2) to Mavericks Server 3.0.
I chose to do a clean Mavericks install on a clean partition created on a 1 TB disk that was upgraded into my trusty MacBook. I used the DiskmakerX app to create a Mavericks installation USB drive. When the screen came up with the option to import users, programs & files (took a pass on email) from the Mountain Lion Server partition, I let it run overnight to transpose everything of value into the clean Mavericks installation.
The next morning the only program that wasn't PERFECTLY installed and configured on Mavericks was Server 2.2.2. I deleted it and bought/installed Server 3.0. After Server 3.0's setup ran that only thing I had to do manually was start Postgres! My domain setting, DNS, all my web applications that were set up on Mountain Lion Server were all GOOD TO GO again on Mavericks Server!
I'm disclosing this here, publicly because it was a BIG PAIN to install and deploy all my websites using Mountain Lion's server app. To say the easy transposition into Server 3.0 was an unexpected and pleasant surprise amounts to massive understatement.
Now I'm going to describe two small anomolies I've noticed in either Mavericks or Server 3.0 that other users might want to be on the lookout for. They're not fatal. But they might be "habringers" suggesting underlying problems in either the new OS or the new Server's internals.
The toolbar icon for TimeMachine doesn't "spin" when it backs up. It's not a big deal. But it's convenient to see the circle around the clock whirling so we know when TIme Machine is backing up.
Mavericks Server isn't reporting newly upgraded apps as available under the Updates Tab of the Server's Software Updates subsystem. It might be inconsequential. But with a new OS version it never hurts to let the developers know about the "little things" that don't apparently work.
Kudos to the Maverick's developers for releasing an OS X version that's THIS CLEAN. And hugs to Apple's management for making it a free download upgrade for developers!!!
Full disclosue: I don't now and never have worked for Apple. but I do own a few shares of Apple stock that we purchased many years ago at $14.00 / share. I'm not a big shareholder. But based on my recent seamless upgrades to Mavericks and iIOS 7, I'm a happy one who's not likely to sell any time soon.
If Apple can do for ALL THEIR HARDWARE AND SOFTWARE PRODUCTS what they seem to have done for OS X and iOS, they've got at least a fighting chance to recover from their losses after their stock peaked at about $700.00 /share.
    Keep up the good work!

  • Updating Snow Leopard 10.6.8 to OSX Mavericks Server?

Is there an easy way to update a 4 gb Mac Mini Dual Intel under 10.6.8 Server to OSX 10.9 Mavericks?
I'd rather NOT have to back up the entire HD, wipe it and try to install a whole new system onto it.
But I know the server softwarde doesn't allow much changes to itself.
I tried going to the app store to download 10.9 Mavericks Server, but I got a message it needed 10.9 to run and it wouldn't download!
I'm trying the ruegular Mavericks upgrade, but I suspect the server software will not let it install over it.
Ideas, suggestions for a "painless" update?

Starting with OS X 10.7, OS X Server and Server.app are configured as an add-on to the regular OS X client software, and not as a seperate distribution.
For your case, upgrade to 10.9 Mavericks client (which will leave the server bits alone), then purchase and install Server.app (which will hopefully find and correctly import all of the old server settings).
You'll probably also want the OS X 10.9 Workgroup Manager (WGM) download, too.
Have an external backup or two, given that the upgrade might blow up.

  • Mavericks server – where to buy

Hi, I like to upgrade my 10.9 to Mavericks server. In which store can I still get the old server software by using my valid Apple-ID?
I cannot yet upgrade to Yosemite because some running apps will not be compatible with 10.10.
    Thanks for any response.

Use this link to download either OS X Server 2.2.5 (Mountain Lion) or OS X Server 3.2.2 (Mavericks) IF you had already purchased one or both.
You can redownload OS X Server for Mavericks or Mountain Lion if you meet one of these conditions:
You purchased OS X Server 2.x or 3.x from the Mac App Store.
You purchased a Mac mini or Mac Pro with OS X Server and adopted OS X Server 2.x or 3.x from the Mac App Store.
If OS X Server is not in your list of purchases, but you meet the conditions for redownloading it, contact Apple support.

  • Mavericks server log flooded

Recently upgraded OS X Server 10.6.8 to Server.app 3.2.2 and now the System Log is getting flooded with the following message repeatedly...

This is repeating basically every second.  Only services enabled are File Sharing, NetInstall & Open Directory (and DeployStudio server).  I'm trying to find the source.
      Any ideas?  Thanks!

What type of external storage do you have connected.  The IOSCSITagetDevice would suggest iSCSI or possibly and outdated SCSI driver.  Any chance you have old ATTO drivers that snuck in on the upgrade?  Are you using iSCSI?  Are all your volumes working?  Take a look in /Library/StartupItems for legacy startup scripts.  Maybe check out /Library/LaunchDaemons and LaunchAgents to see if there is any junk in there.

  • Mavericks Server Issues

We have a server that was upgraded to Mavericks and OS X Server 3 and that's when the issues started. Folders becoming inaccessible, permission issues, file getting corrupted. We thought it was because it was an older Mac Mini, which was fine running Snow Leopard server, but the issues started after Mavericks. It was assumed part of the problem was the upgrade as opposed to a clean install. As this is a production machine, there was no time to wipe and reinstall. We also worried it was possible the hardware was going after running 24/7 for 3.5 years.
To be safe, we replaced it will a brand new Mac mini running a clean version of Mavericks server. It was fine for a few dys then the issues started creeping in. Permissions issues again, inaccessible folders, Windows shares getting kicked off and finally the log file filling up with errors (4,000+) have pushed us to the breaking point. We cannot get a full days work done on the server without having to repair something or reboot.
The error that comes up in the log and console is: Kernel: proc: table is full. It fills up the log.
DNS is not running and neither is open directory as this server is hosting a small network of users (less than 10) for file sharing of graphics files only. Some of the errors occur once a windows machine connects.
Any suggestions as to what could be causing these issues would be greatly appreciate as we are stumped. It ran fine under Snow Leopard it seems it's more Mavericks specific. The next step is to revert to Snow Leopardand pray that work.
    Thanks in advance.

  • Cannot buy Mavericks server anymore

Hello, I have a client who needs to install Mavericks server and cant buy it anymore via the app store. Not all businesses upgrade at the speed of developers for obvious reasons! What options does he have? Thanks!

Call Apple Enterprise support at 866-752-7753.  They will sell Server 3.0 (for Mavericks) on a case by case basis; however, there is a 72-hour wait for the transaction to complete.
Everyone that would prefer Apple to keep available on the App Store the previous versions of Server should leave feedback at

  • Clients losing bindings from mavericks server

    Hi,
Yet another issue with Mavericks server. I have a Mavericks server with three replicas. This is a new install, only two weeks old. I have three hundred 10.8.5 clients bound to the directory and working fine. The issue started with a machine losing its binding, strange I thought. Maybe just a glitch, so I re- bound it with no problems. Two days later, another machine lost its binding for no reason. I rebound this too, I was starting to get that feeling in my stomach  that a lot of Apple admins must get.. The next day, after functioning fine all morning, every single machine lost its binding and the directory refused to respond. All the services appear up on the server, however I cannot bind to the server or any of the replicas. It seems that when a directory master goes bust, it takes the replicas directories down too. What is the point of having replicas if a corruption can spread like this???
I have had to restore my entire hard drive from a backup. Has anyone had this problem? this operating system is in its third iteration in as many months.
HOW DOES APPLE GET AWAY WITH THIS??

More of the same for our company, too. All workstations on 10.9, I migrated from a 10.5 AFP server, which was super-stable (hence my reluctance to upgrade), to a 10.9 server. Its only function is file sharing.
It seems that if a user is disconnected for any reason-- app nap (we disabled that), machine goes to sleep, user closes the laptop to go home without closing documents and disconnecting properly from the server-- the files become ghost files and nobody is able to open them. Attempting to open them results in unresponsive applications (typically MS Office 2011 apps), and an unresponsive finder. The only solution is to restart.
I am asking users to try and remember to properly save and close documents, as well as log out of the server before they leave, but given the ability for years to just 'close and go' with 10.5 server, it's going to be a hard habit to break.
The work around is to drag the document to the desktop, rename it, and move it back to the server. The original document is shown to be in use/locked and the only way to delete is via CLI, so I have to do that each time. The document cannot even be renamed to the original document's name, or it will again show in use/locked.
Frustrating, and I'm really looking for a solution! My users are going to revolt. :/

  • Mavericks Server as a router?

I'm wanting to simplify our office network infrastructure. I'd like to have a Mac mini Mavericks Server and an Airport Extreme. The OS X Server documetation says that in order for Mavericks Server to be able to manage an Airport Base Station, the base station has to be set up in router mode; however, with this configuration, it seems like you couldn't, say, use the DHCP server that OS X Server has...
So then the option would be to put the base station in bridge mode (how I currently do it), and use the Mac mini server as a router (using a second network interface). But Mavericks Server, as far as I can tell, has no routing stuff built in like previous versions of Mac OS X Server. The documentation on Mavericks Server (if you can really call it that) makes no mention of any sort of Apple solution for basic, small business network infrastructure. And my Googling for any other discussions on the topic seems to be failing me. There's a bit of talk of configuring pf manually to provide NAT services, and I expect there'd also be some manual routing issues.
Am I chasing a pipe dream to hope that I can use just a Mac mini server and Airport Extreme for my office's connectivy solution? What are other people doing?
Right now, we have a Mac OS X Server running 10.6.5 (upgrades are always so painful, and this one works) to provide RADIUS service to an Airport Extreme for our wifi, but our router is a FreeBSD box. This more or less is fine, but I'm hoping to make my life a bit easier by having one less thing to manage. But if I've got to setup pf and stuff by hand anyway, I might as well keep this in FreeBSD where this sort of thing is much more common and better supported...

I am setting up an entirely new network with a CIPA firewall/gateway and Mac OSX server (2 x MacMini; one as main server and one as cache server).  Do I need to set up the CIPA first and then set up my Mac Server?
You're going to have to establish the IP address space to start with, and the gateway-router-firewall-NAT box is usually the first piece of configuring that.  That box will usually first reference off-LAN DNS, too.
To start with, get out of both 192.168.0.0/24 and 192.168.1.0/24, and get into an IP subnet somewhere else in the 192.168.0.0/16 block, or somewhere in the 172.16.0.0/12 block, or somewhere ("weird") in 10.0.0.0/8 private IP blocks.  This to avoid problems with eventual use of VPN connections into your network.
I'll usually assign the lowest-numbered IP addresses to the  gateway-router-firewall-NAT box and to the server(s) and printers and other devices that need fixed (static) IP addresses, then leave a gap of maybe 20 or 50 IP addresses depending on the network, and then allocate the DHCP pool from the top 50 or 100 IP addresses in the subnet.  This because the addresses I type more often are shorter, and the volatile (dynamic, DHCP-set) addresses are in a higher and less-memorable range.  How much you allocate to the static hosts and how big the dynamic pool is depends on how much you're expecting to add to the configuration.  Maybe 1 to 50 or 1 to 99 for static, then maybe 100 or 150 or 200 to 254 for DHCP pool, for instance, and depending on how many static and how many dynamic devices are expected.  Don't cramp the static address pool — leave room for adding hosts there.  If you expect or if you do have a lot of dynamic hosts around, then you're likely going to be working with a router and multiple subnets and/or otherwise shuffling that DHCP pool around.  The DHCP stuff is more flexible and dynamic, the range of addresses available for static-configured servers is, well, static.)
The default behavior of most gateway-router-firewall-NAT boxes is usually secure, and those usually only allow outbound connections, which you'll be using (when you first get going) to load software and updates and related.
Once the OS X Server IP is set and local OS X Server DNS services are configured — do not skip this, do not reference off-LAN DNS serves, do not try to use ISP DNS servers or Google DNS servers here, set up local DNS services.  (The only reasons to skip this: you're at public IP addresses and can use public DNS servers, or you already have LAN-local DNS server(s) configured — and warning: while many will reference DNS services, very few gateway-router-firewall-NAT boxes actually have DNS servers.  If you're not able to enter a list of local host names and local addresses, you do not have a DNS server in the box.  You'll usually have what's known as a DNS resolver, and that won't work.)
Once you have OS X Server DNS tested and working, then reconfigure the gateway-router-firewall-NAT box to reference the OS X Server DNS server, and not the ISP DNS server(s).  Again, do not reference off-LAN DNS servers here.  Just the DNS servers located "behind" your gateway-router-firewall-NAT box.  This will then allow the other clients on your network to acquire the proper DNS server address.
At your option, you can configure DHCP server on the gateway-router-firewall-NAT box, or on the OS X Server box.
I suspect you're referencing a CIPAFilter box, and that would imply this isn't a residential network, and that you may well be creating a wholly new network for an educational organization — there's rather more to setting up such an environment than just the firewall and the address space.  You're headed toward establishing Open Directory and some related pieces, right after setting up the IP address space and DNS services, for instance.
This CIPAFilter box may well filter based on DNS translation requests from local clients, which means there could be other requirements here — some of these boxes use DNS-based filtering, which means somebody will have to figure out how to get OS X Server DNS and any DNS services in this box working.  It might be enough to reference this CIPAFilter box as the DNS forwarder within the OS X Server configuration.
Here's a longer write-up on networking boxes and bits and bobs.  How that CIPAFilter works, I don't know, and would have to have the model number and then spend some time with the documentation to answer that one...
As is probably becoming obvious from the above wall of text you've just read, this probably isn't going to be the same question, and — to avoid melting my poor brains with the sorts of confusion that tend to arise in these conflated threads — probably should be started as your own thread somewhere here in the OS X Server forum.  (Ayup, IP networks and DNS services I can do.  Conflated forum threads tend to confuse me.    Go figure.)
