MaxDB/liveCache Forum: target audience and relevant support

Dear Community,
this thread was created to clear up any confusion that might have arisen in several threads in the MaxDB/liveCache forum, mainly regarding product support issues for SAP customers using SAP solutions and MaxDB.
SAP customers running SAP solutions should use the forum for:
- how-to questions
- general questions on MaxDB
- feedback
but not for product issues.
Attention:
Product problems must be reported via OSS/CSS, SAP support/development will point this out to the users and will thus not process those issues on the forum. Anybody from the (outside) community is of course free to assist in the matter.
SAP customers running non-SAP solutions utilizing MaxDB & others running non-SAP solutions utilizing MaxDB may use the forum for all kind of questions, incl.:

- feedback

Any one please help me on why the global navigation links are visible to all group users even after applying a specific target audience group to the link. I Checked , User profile service and User profile synchronizing services
and they are running fine. Test environment is running fine even both the services are not running. Please let me know is any relation should be there between target audience and User profile services?
I am wondering that the Target Audience is not working in global navigation suddenly in production server and the same is working in test server.

Since it would appear this is the "official" conduit to tech support now at SAS I am posting this here.
You've lost me as an Xcelsius 2008 user and it only took 24 hours to do so.
As I've posted to a few places on this board, the upgrade process had errors for me, and 2008 suddenly became unable to load per my post to this forum OVER 36 HOURS ago which has received 0 responses from anyone within tech support or SAS. New software I debated over spending my $ on. Decided to, and within a few hours I could not use it. And NO way to get anyone to assist in troubleshooting.
I'm not a newbie to development, with over 20 years developing hardware and software solutions for very demanding telephone operator customers around the world. I understand bugs, the need for patches, etc. although I do seriously question how stable this release really is. I mean if upgrades to existing 4.5 pro loads have issues dealing with Microsoft libraries, I do have to question how thoroughly tested this release really is.
What has completely destroyed my faith in Business Objects / SAS is the lack of any type of technical support per your new policies which just went into effect. I paid for the upgrade, downloaded the code, installed it (albeit with issues), lost the ability to run the code almost immediately, and went into a dark hole with no way out!
The telesales rep (who I'll let remain nameless less he get into trouble for helping) has been very professional and helpful. I wish I could say the same for others - but there are no others - just this forum to try and get help on. (and thanks to those that did respond - no offense intended, but where are the "official" SAS reps on this board and how can issues like mine where I am completely dead on a new install be highlighted and escalated for resolution?)
This is a business app, run by business users trying to do their jobs. I cannot fathom how SAS can and will be successful with Xcelcius if there is not some ability to receive priority (and yes, FREE) support - especially for install issues on code just purchased! Talk about creating severe buyer's remorse! I understand customer / techical service is expensive. I've built global call centers over my career for this purpose, and it's a fine line to walk between being able to provide a level of support expected by most customers, and also trying to not support the users for free who are perfectly content to spend hours each day on the phone with your highly professional reps basically having their work done for them.
But to not be able to get a response on a brand new install that has gone terribly wrong - and receive that response in a timely manner is just flat out wrong. It's a $1k software package - not freeware!
So for now, I'll drop back to 4.5 (although I must admit part of me is wondering how much of our dashboard work can now be done without your software. Bad taste in my mouth at this point) and chalk up the hours lost this week to a really bad experience with your company.
Comment if you will, but please take this comment to heart. I had the guts to write it. Wonder how many others are just not saying anything at all?

Waiste of time and money. I am sooooo, pissed off. Zero technical support, lack of confidence in this product. I used the 4,5 version- much better and reliable vs. this Engage2008 piece of software.....
I would NOT recommend buying it on all the other forums I am active on.
TOMORROW is the deadline for SP1 - I hope they don't have the guts of asking money for it.

I have an Ada executable that's creating a buffer of data that's being fed to a Labview executable that's displaying the data in a GUI. We're re-architecting some legacy system hardware and I'm just trying to figure out if this configuration is even possible.

I basically have an Ada executable and Labview executable that currently run on a Sun Machine with Solaris as the operating system. I'm re-architecting the system hardware and will be getting rid of the Sun Machine and Solaris. I'm don't have any issues with the Ada executable, but I'm not sure what configurations Labview supports.

I log in to 'HP Enterprise Business Community' and 'Consumer Support Forums' with the same username?

However, I am logged in to both with the same user id.
Then, how to get to my subcriptions I posted in each forum?
Although I log in to the 'HP Enterprise Business Community ' and Consumer Support Forums' with same user name, when clicking on my user name while logged in to 'Consumer Support Forums'. , then I only noticed my posts posted at this forum. However, thos posted in HP Enterprise Business Community, I didn't find them. To see them, then I must click on my usename while logged in to HP Enterprise Business Community.
Could you please confirm this for me?

The Enterprise and Consumer forums are separate communities. Even if you use the same username, you need to go to them separately to view your subscribed threads.

How to see/use Target Audience column in SharePoint Designer Workflow (SharePoint 2013 Online, Designer Workflow)

Hello,
I'm attempting to use use the Target Audiences field in a SPD 2013 workflow, in this case just attempting to log the value to history for testing purposes. This is failing saying the column does not exist.
I enabled Audience Targeting on the list then create a simple workflow to log the value to history when the item changes.
I change an item and the workflow starts, but when it gets to any action looking at "Current Item:Target Audiences" it stops and says:
HTTP BadRequest to <site url>/_api/web/lists(guid'XXXXXXXX')/Items(4)?%24select=ID%2CTarget_x0020_Audiences
The field or property 'Target_x0020_Audiences' does not exist.
But it does. It is listed in the list setting and enabled for the content type.
I ran the listed API through an API program and sure enough, Target Audience is not listed in the results object.
I'm 99% sure I've enabled this and that the field is present and the workflow is valid. I ran the same situation on two lists to ensure it wasn't a hiccup, same results.
Is this a know issue? I couldn't find anything obvious online saying you cannot see this field via workflow, most of what i found said this would work.

I understand what you have explained, and have seen several similar explanations that have lead to my confusion. Can you elaborate a bit, maybe for the sake of future information seekers?
I understand that audiences can be defined using the rules operations in Central Admin, but it seems another standard function is to just directly assign existing SharePoint groups. I think this is what you mean above, but this is also the point of
my misunderstanding.
In this particular setup I have only used existing SharePoint groups with no audiences defined in Central Admin. List Item A has a target audience of SharePoint group X, just that simple of a setup.
Assuming the above is valid, I would then like to see or alter the groups via SPD workflow.
Based on the following posts, I was under the impression this may be possible (but obviously not fully clear and thus I posted this):

So in SPD, I set a simple action such as "Log Current Item:Target Audience to history" (note the I am able to select target audience in SPD like any other field with no errors). At this point I am assuming everything is valid as SPD is treating
the field like any other string field. When executed the error in the above post comes up.
So to confirm your explanation, this is not supported? Even though the field is available for selection by design, it is not capable of use and known to produce errors in all cases of its use? The first post above is 100% wrong and you cannot
use SPD to set/view the target audience field? The second post is also wrong as it seems to present the fields as available for alteration using string concatenation?
If in fact the field is present by design, but also impossible to use by design, is this potentially a bug as the field is not supposed to be available if it will always produce the error when used with no error in SPD during compile?

How does Check Names in the Target Audience picker work?

Can anyone tell me how the Check Names button in the Target Audience picker works? We are having problem with a specific audience in one of our web applications. I don’t think the problem is the actual audience though:
The Target Audience is a global target audience named ”XYZ”. It is compiled and contains member. When an article is tagged with this audience all works fine as long as we use the Audience Picker dialog. But, when using the Check Name button the audience
is not saved. This happens when I edit properties on the article (not customized UI) and also when I edit the article in a customized UI. No ULS messages.
I have read that the Target Audience Picker searches for matches in AD Distribution groups, SharePoint groups and Global Audiences. When we write “XYZ” in the audience field and presses the Check Names button one suggestion is displayed, named “XYZ”. When
I write “XYZ N” and press the Check Names button several suggestions are displayed: 4 “XYZ” and a couple of other suggestions “XYZ xx…” etc. We have no SharePoint groups starting with “XYZ”, we have no AD Distribution Groups starting with “XYZ”, and we have
only one Global Audience starting with “XYZ”. Where are all the “XYZ” suggestions coming from? Can anyone help, please?
We are using SharePoint 2010.

Hi Heidi,
The target audience picker is similar to people picker, it searches the content of User Profile Service to find the matching users or groups.
I did a test based on your description. In my testing, everything worked well.
Please check whether there are some users whose display names are like ‘XYZ ***’.
Please create a new global audience using a different name, compare the result.

How to create an target audience to be used in a list or navigation?

Hello,
I created a new SharePoint group called "test" and added an Active Directory Security Group to it. I used "test" for the Target Audience on a menu item, but the link still showed up on the page with a user who is not in the Active
Security Group. Is there something that I am missing? I have a list of links and some navigation links that I like to be hidden from users who don't have access to them.
Any suggestions on how to hide the link based upon an AD security group?

Hi Paul,
From your description, I understand you would like to target audience on a navigation link.
I assume you have created SharePoint group "test" and certain users don't have access to the list, please follow these steps below:
Before you targeting an audience on a link, make sure you have removed this link from the Recent.
Click gear icon -> Site settings -> Look and Feel, Navigation.
Find the section “Structural Navigation: Editing and Sorting” in Navigation Settings page, you can add link in the navigation or edit an existing link.
Add SharePoint group test in the target audience box.

Creating a Business Package for multiple Target Audiences

Hi,
I want to create a business package that will be certified later. The required target audiences are Line Managers and Specialists. From what I understand, a business package must be assigned to one of the following: Every User, Managers, or Specialists. I take this to mean that we must create two separate Business packages if we want to support both Line Managers AND Specialists. Is this correct?

Hi Kenneth,
the formal requirements in fact are "the business package must be located in one of the folders specified below. The user type assigned to the business package (Every User, Line Manager, or Specialist) during registration determines your choice."
Anyhow, the certification is a process which primarily cares about correct namespaces, namespace usage etc. So if from your point of view the business package only makes sense to be distributed as one package, just decide which of the terms in question will make most sense. Then put your complete content under this area.

Change unix UID on MaxDB/liveCache installation?

Is it possible to change the UID of an existing liveCache install on a unix server?
Example/Background: liveCache 7.7 installed on local host as user sdb using UID 255. Someone then reinstalled the system on same host, but redefined UID 210 for sdb. Person then imported data from backup file. Problem is that /etc/passwd synchronization changed sdb user UID to 255 and erased UID 210. However MaxDB 7.7 system still writes new files still using original ID 210, not 255 ID. Half the unix file ownership is user 210, half is 255. (thank goodness for group permissions!)
Question is how to have MaxDB recognize the UID 255 not the 210 ID.

Nope. At least there is no automatic way to do that.
What you can do - err - should do is: reinstall the software via SDBINST.

See, this problem, besides others, is one of the reasons, why 'installation by filecopy' is not supported. Re-install the software, that will solve the problem.

And again: reinstall the software.
Come on, it's MaxDB - installations of the software and applying patches don't take hours (we're not like Oracle in that point ).

I have tried using the AIR appliaction and it worked, But our requirement is NO INSTALL to the user machine for the silent printing. It is just from web page and silent printing to the default printer to the desktop/Laptop. Can anyone share your thoughts and experience with us. It will be very helpful..

Did you either of you ever find a solution? I'm stuck too, it seems I can get remote printing on all these PDFs to work but it just prints a blank page since I've been using Javascript in the browser, not Adobe's (they are Engineering drawings that I do not have permission to edit so I can't just insert code into them but I need to make work instructions). I've been scouring the internet for hours now, it seems that this thread is the only relevant/useful one at this point. No one else was trying to achieve this for similar reasons to mine.

How can I diagnose or resolve missing AD groups for target audience rules

Hello everyone,
I'm having some problems with the target audiences I have set up in my SharePoint 2010 farm. I have set up a single rule for each target audience in Central Administration, pointing to a group in Active Directory. Up until a couple of weeks ago I had no
problem using the people picker to look up AD grups and everything seemed to be working, but now I am suddenly not able to find any groups in AD.
The User Profile Synchronisation is running without any errors. I have already performed a full synchronisation and compiled all audiences with no luck. I have also checked the property called peoplepicker-searchadforests with stsadm and that appears to
be correct as well. If I try and look up the same AD group in a peoplepicker on one of the site collections it is immediately displayed with no errors. All of the AD groups I'm using are global security groups and the ULS log contains no errors from when the
target audience compilation started until it ended.
What puzzles me is that AD groups on our test environment can be found in the peoplepicker in Central Administration without any problems, despite the fact that the target audience rule fails with the message "Non-existent Membership group...".
It would seem to me that SharePoint does not look up the security groups directly in AD but rather somewhere else - a lot of posts suggests that SharePoint stores information about target audience it in the ProfileDB but I haven't been able to find which table.
I know I'm leaving out a lot of other details but what I really need to know is how I can investigate this issue further, e.g. does SharePoint in fact look up the groups in the ProfileDB and if so from what table? Is there any kind of tool or technique I
can use to actually see what happens in SharePoint from the moment I try and search for an AD group in the people picker?

Thank you for the info - I didn't know about $wa.PeoplePickerSettings :-)
I have compared all the properties from PeoplePickerSettings between our prod- and test environment and the only difference I found was that the domain was added to "distributionlistsearchdomains" on prod but not on test. Adding the value in test did not
reproduce the issue though.
I'm not sure if I can see somewhere which account was used to set up the people picker but the account I used to look up AD-groups is not locked out and there is no filter set for peoplepicker-searchadcustomfilter. If there is a way to see which account
was used to set up the people picker I would very much like to know.
However I did manage to find some clue in the profile database. It turns out that querying the MemberGroup table I was able to locate all target audiences on our test environment (not counting the "all site users"), but I was not able to find any of the
groups in prod. If the peoplepicker is indeed looking for the AD groups in ProfileDB then that might explain why I cannot find any groups.
The question is how I can persue this further - how does SharePoint update the Profile database and what would be a good place to look for any errors?
