Maximum Depth in Exporting CS4

If I'm not working in 32 bit floating point color range in editing is maximum depth worth while for exporting?

You are confusing things here.
Normal RGB video is 8 bits per channel, so 24 bits. If you add an alpha channel, you add 8 bits and end up with 32 bits.
If you have 4:2:2 material from your camera, you can use 10 bits color depth and end up with 30 bits.
Upping 8 bits per channel to 10 bits in PR only means padding two 0's to your data stream and has no effect at all. If you start with 4:2:2 material, it it stupid not to use all the 10 bits, because is makes for much cleaner keys and better images.
Adding an alpha channel and going from 24 to 32 bits can be great for AE but not for generic export to say DVD, BRD, etc. because the alpha channel is then tossed out again.

• Help needed! White lines over uncompressed avi export - CS4 v4.2

Hello,
I am having problems exporting an uncompressed avi at max bit depth in Premiere Pro CS4. Whenever I export it, I get what is below. Please look at the image to get an idea of what it looks like. The quality is there, just the white lines are annoying.
http://i213.photobucket.com/albums/cc291/madindehead/PremierePro_export_weird.png
However, when exporting as an uncompressed avi with 8 bit bit depth, the quality is worse, but there are no white lines. I am using the UYVY codec. As you can see, the quality of the export is excellent, but it is spoiled by those lines. Does anyone know what could be causing it, and how can I fix it? I don't really want to use 8 bit depth, as the quality is nowhere near as good sadly.
Thanks.

I tried looking here: http://forums.adobe.com/message/2105977#2105977
Which led me to encoding the video with VirtualDub, using a lossless codec, and then re-exporting it from Premiere. However, exactly the same thing happened. I have found, that using Uncompressed Microsoft AVI, with Render at maximum depth selected and using the UYVY codec, definitely gives the best quality. If I un-tick "Render at maximum depth" the problem DOES NOT occur, however, the quality is nowhere near as good. So I think this is where the problem lies. You can see under that white layer, that the quality is there. But still no joy sadly.
I am using StaxRip to encode the files as MP4 using the x264 codec, and this gives excellent quality, for the file size. As I am using this, I obviously want the highest quality output from Premiere that I can possibly get.

• Apple Pro Res "Render at Maximum Depth"

From my understanding, Apple Pro Res maxes out at 12 bit with DSLR cameras in movie mode not even reaching that. Yet, the setting for "Render at Maximum Depth" offers 24 to 64 bit. Anyone know what the story is with this setting?
And does anyone know the settings for Apple Pro Res 4444 at its highest quality when coming from H.264?
Thanks.

A question for you - what is your workflow where you think you might need this? Keep in mind that the majority of cameras only record 8-bit color, and also in a very highly compressed format, so you won't necessarily gain anything by going to 4444, as the source video is of limited quality already.
Basically, if you don't have any high-bit-depth sources in your timeline to preserve the quality of, there may be little or no benefit to enabling "Max Depth".

• Trouble exporting CS4 to PDF

I am the layout editor for my high schools newspaper and we recently got a new imac. We put cs4 on it and made our first page.
I exported it to PDF (with the same settings as on the old mac which works fine) and all the headlines turned to black boxes. We then took the indesign file form the new mac put it on the old one and exported it off the old one and everything went fine. Notice the black boxes.
That is what went wrong...
This is what we want...
Thanks in advance for any help

HMM..... I just looked at that website myself at the PDF and it showed up everything regular. I know for sure that I uploaded the version that was showing all the black boxes. I went ahead and reuploaded it again and this time it only had 1 black box underneath a headline. I'm quite confused as to what is happening. It might be (like you said) something to do with the reader. I'll check around on that and see if I can find anything.
If you have any more ideas that would be great

• Can not publish or export CS4, Vista

Hello all,
I'm hoping someone has had this problem and can help. I am using a new computer with Vista. I'm using Flash CS4. My flash document is huge and has an imported video in it. So the file size is 675 MB. (I'm guessing this is the problem). Anyway, I have moved the flash document from the server to my computer. I also saved it as a CS4 version - it was created in MX. I can not publish it or export it. I need it to be a swf file, html, or .mov. I was able to do it once as a swf file, but I needed to make changes to it and now I can't get it to export again. The progress bar shows up like it's publishing, but when it's halfway done, the window disappears and nothing has happened.
It's enough to drive you insane. Does anyone have any thoughts?
Thanks in advance.

Hello,
Well, I converted it into an flv after I read about it in the help. But the quality was horrible. It made the video into a smaller file, but it made it grainy and pixilated. I think the original format of my video was the problem, however. Because I was reading in the CS4 help docs and it said the only format you can import is flv. I originally imported the wmv into Flash MX and then opened that file in Flash CS4. So I bet when I went to export from CS4 it would process until it got to the wmv and then just stop. Would be nice if there as an error message. Still doesn't explain why I was able to export it from CS4 once though! Oh and the help also says that you should only embed a short - 10 second etc - video directly into the timeline in Flash. oops! Mine was 12 minutes, ha.
Anyway, thanks for the idea about just using Windows Movie Maker. I didn't know you could add titles to scenes until you mentioned it and then I read about it in WMM. I had to trick the program a little to get my titles to be on the top of the scene instead of the middle, but it will work for next time.
Thanks!

• Exporting CS4 files to JPEG

Hi,
I'm a newbie to CS4 and am having terrible difficulties in trying to export some of my images to JPEG.  I've recently upgraged my camera to a Canon 5D mark 2 as well as converted to the Mac and CS4.  With all this change I've suddenly found that when I open some of my newer files in photoshop, I no longer have the option to save or export them to JPEG.  I'm offered a choice of PSD, PNG, TIF & PDF but no JPEG.
Does anybody have any suggestions?  Any help will be greatly appreciated.

The images are likely 16 bit. If that's not it, please post followups in the Photoshop forum.

• Need help exporting (CS4)

Everytime I try to export a file it either exports wrong (posterizes ny movie) or gives me errors.
I want to export my film uncompressed. I tried setting the video codec to "none" but it posterizes (or really it desaturates it and adds random splotches of color). I then tried using Uncompressed YUV 10bit, it rendered once nicely, but I realized an error I had made in the video, fixed it and tried again only to recieve error after error after error. It doesn't even tell me what the error is as far as I can tell, it just gives me the yellow triangle with an exclamation point in it.
I tried recreating the project, but it still isn't working.
Below is a screengrab of the YUV settings.

Try encoding to an entirely new (unique) filename.
Maybe try exporting progressive fields. ( What is the source?)
What is the  853 x480  Custom all about?
Try a standard preset.

• What is the maximum Artboard size of CS4?

We currently use CS3 in our Art Dept at the sign company I work for. Sometimes designing/layout for some projects can be a pain when they go beyond the max artboard size constraint in CS3. This is especially true in my dept which does all the large format digital printing. I find myself having to switch back and forth between some of my sign software, which has almost limitless area for design and layout. Not that we can't work in scales but life would be so much easier if we could do things in full scale. Now to the point, does CS4 have larger artboard size than CS3?

Larry, I don't think you know what is meant by "working in scales" or otherwise you would not have made such an odd comment. I don't really feel like defining it here, but suffice to say that many things do not scale linearly in a program like AI that is not designed for anything other than 1:1 layout. Many effects don't scale, for example, even if you check the box. Then there is problem of having to remember to do a mathematical action on every line weight, width, height, font size, font leading, font spacing and so on. Fonts do not always scale linearly either; often the text flow changes. You only have a to miss one math step to have a ruined output. The printer has to take the extra step, too, on the production side. With a program that allows working in scale you just draw at full size and all of that is taken care of automatically.

• H.264 encoding for export - CS4

Does higher bitrate encoding equal higher quality results in all instances?
I can of course see increased bitrate encoding reflected in
incrementally larger file sizes, but the quality difference
seems to be much more subtle.
thanks

My understanding of how material is broadcast these days is no matter what
you supply to the broadcaster... it is going to be "converted to something more
convenient for them to "send" to air.  Especially so with satellite where bandwidth is a
bigger issue.  Much broadcast media is file streamed from servers so understandeably the files sizes are eventually reduced.
I provide uncompressed avi and movs that in the final out come..., I know are broadcast at some level of MPEG.
eg 30 second HD TVCs  at 2GB files become 50mb mpegs.
My rationale is that give them the highest quality possible and let any degredation occur their end ( where  I have no control)

• Export with Maximum Render quality

I'm about to output in 4K a final master project file for a short film that was primarily shot in 4K, but also has some clips in 1920 by 1080 and even 1280 by 720.
I'm not concerned with how long the export takes.  Is there any downside (or benefit) to activating "maximum render quality"?  What about "render at maximum depth"?  24 bit or 48 bit?
I would think for a master file, you'd max out all of this, no?
Thank you for any and all input.  I will use the master file to generate Vimeo, Apple TV, etc. dubs.

Use Maximum Render Quality: Mostly affects upscaling of content. If you're not upscailing, you won't notice much of a difference. Looks like you might be upscaling content to 4k, so I'd say yes to turning this on.
Render at Maximum Depth: What is the bit-depth of your source content? Do you have any content in your sequence that would benefit from the higher bit-depth?
If you really don't care how long it takes to export, you might as well turn these on. The drawback is the longer encode time.

• Apple Pro Res 422 HQ export - "render at max depth" and "24 bit or 48 bit depth"?

I'm exporting my 90 minute feature for DCP using the Apple Pro Res 422 HQ codec. The film is 1920x1080 and that is what the export will be. We used a variety of cameras (Canon 7D, Sony XR160, GoPro, Blackmagic in HD) for the film.
For the export options:
Do I check "Render at Maximum Depth"?
Which do I choose - 24 bit or 48 bit depth? - one has to be chosen even when "Render at Maximum Depth" is unchecked
When I asked the DCP house, they said that "Render at Maximum Depth doesn't actually do anything when using this codec" and haven't answered the 24 vs. 48 bit question.
This discussion:
https://forums.adobe.com/message/4529886#4529886
says that you "never need to enable the Max Render Quality (MRQ) unless you are exporting in a format/pixel ratio different from your original video."

• Ongoing problems with newest Mac Pro and CS4

Hi all,
I've just switched from a Final Cut Pro editorial house to a new company that bases production around the Adobe Production Suite using Premiere Pro CS4 for all our editing needs. From what I understand about this company (and this workstation) is that Premiere Pro CS4 has been buggy on this machine and this machine only. I find this strange as it is one of the newer high end mac systems available right now and is more than capable of crushing most video that will be put into it.
In brief a summary of the problems include;
1.) Final exports rarely work, no matter the codec, bit rate, size, duration, etc.
2.) If AME CS4 does manage to successfully export a piece it will generally have random black frames right at every cut starting about halfway through the piece.
3.) Even so much as switching sequences within a project manages to bog the system down and crash it, thus making me have to force quit the program and occasionally restart the machine.
4.) After rendering the work area the machine suddenly becomes unresponsive and thus causes another crash/force quit scenario.
5.) Certain audio tracks will play for about 2min and 30seconds and then mysteriously go silent, while a clear and present waveform is able to be seen (however occasionally premiere will cut this part of the clip off!)
I will post the hardware and software specs below but I feel it is necessary to detail why I find these problems to be extremely peculiar.
Firstly the projects we have are generally shot on the 5D MkII. I understand CS5 has the ability to play these clips back through it's mercury playback system (after it's own internal conform) at real-time and allow you to edit as if it had been transcoded traditionally. We are planning on obtaining a copy of CS5 in the near future but I am currently worried if these problems may be associated to faulty hardware.
Upon my arrival I formatted every drive and did a clean install of OSX Leopard 10.6.5 as well as a fresh install of Adobe Production Premium CS4 (updated to most recent release). This leaves out any possibility of a plug-in such as the red giant filters or sapphire filters interfering with the rendering and exporting process. Nothing seems to work. Even throwing an uncompressed 8-bit clip into AME CS4 manages to crash it.
A coworker of mine had two great ideas on the problem the other day for me to test out. The first being that it could be a bad piece of ram. I figure this could be a possibility as I don't know the history of this machine and I noticed all the RAM slots are full of 1gig sticks (and two 4gig sticks) so there could be a bad one in the bunch. I went through the process of elimination leaving one stick in at a time and testing an export (extremely time consuming) and every time it failed. His second idea was to take my project file and associated media to the creative directors computer which happens to be a two year old Mac Pro running CS4 (on OSX Leopard). He has several plug-ins installed along with tons of additional applications etc etc. Sure enough I loaded up my project file consisting of a bunch of 5D MkII footage and it played back perfectly, exported perfectly, tabbed through sequences perfectly, and did everything it should!
My question is why. Why would his older machine work with this footage on the same version of Premiere Pro CS4 and not my newer, faster, shinier editing machine? I've done everything I can to test any theory I've come up with both from my own experience as well as through internet research. Deleted PList, emptied RAM, emptied Cache, reformat and reinstall, swap RAM around, tested different hard drives, etc. The problem is not isolated strictly to the H.264 files the 5D MkII produces either, as even the uncompressed 8-bit files I've brought in won't play nicely with the system either. It's such a bummer that my first experience with Premiere Pro had to be on a machine that has these horrible quirks but I feel it has a lot to bring to the table over Final Cut Pro and I would love to find a solution to this problem so I can get back to cutting!!
Thank you in advance for all of your help!

The move from FCP to PP is a good one, however, it's only half way there.
Next, move to a Windows 7 64 based machine using an i7 950 and 12 GB RAM at a minimum (with a GTX 460 or better as a seriously considered option), and then upgrade to CS5.
Chances are more than excellent that doing will resolve all your issues.
