Maximum Security

Hey Everone.
I got my first mac ever a few days ago(Powerbook) and wish to set up the security so all files/information that is mine stays mine.
I have never owned a Mac before so I could use some help with this. Firewall, passwords, no file sharing etc.
Thank you in advance

Macs have something called "Firewire Target Disk" mode. http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58583
By pressing apple+T at start up, you're computer boots up as if it was an external hard drive, so you can connect it to any other Mac.
This feature is really great for all kinds of things, however, anybody with physical access to your PB could steal your data unless you're using encrypted disk images. You can easily disable target disk mode with an "open firmware password". Resetting it is just as quick though. The bad guy just needs to pop out a RAM stick. That's it.
Of course, as long as somebody has physical access to your machine, he could just as easily screw it apart and pop out the hard drive. True security will only be achieved by disk images / FileVault. The greater your security measures, the greater the possibility of yourself being locked out by your own passwords. So you really got to thing about what you're doing.
No matter what you're doing, you should always keep unencrypted backups on CD/DVD/hard drives. There's always a chance of dropping your computer, theft etc.

I have downloaded Firefox Portable Edition 17.0.1 from portableapps.com. And merged it with the TOR button add-on from http://torproject.org/torbutton. Entering http://easy-hide-ip.com/ on the address bar get an error saying "Address:http://easy-hide-ip.com/ is a Dangerous Page. So, Trend Micro has confirmed that this website can transmit malicious software or has been involved in online scams or fraud. Please close this page." But I haven't installed "Trend Micro Titanium Maximum Security" on my system at all.
One more thing, I can browse http://easy-hide-ip.com on other browser version of Firefox, Chrome, Opera, Safari, Internet Explorer without any errors.
I don't have any Security system installed like firewall, anti-virus, anti-spyware, etc.

If you didn't install that software then you may have caught malware.<br />
You should always have some AV software installed on Windows and at least regularly run scans.
Do a malware check with some malware scanning programs on the Windows computer.<br />
You need to scan with all programs because each program detects different malware.<br />
Make sure that you update each program to get the latest version of their databases before doing a scan.

  • High (Maximum) Security Setting for FIOS Firewall

If you set the maximum security setting on the Verizon FIOS Firewall then whenever Verizon decides to swap its IP's you are screwed; the unit will not get the new IP.
To compensage for the maximum settings I have enable all of the verizon unit (SBU's) to have unrestricted access aka ANY but this does not do the trick.
Verizon in its ultimate wisdom has not bothered to document anywhere what are the minimum outbould settings should be that would enable this communication in the High (Maximum) security mode.
Does anyone from Verizon read this stuff?

So, I'm pretty much convinced now that the problem with low-quality LR previews seems to be mostly isolated to the previews that LR generates after you make edits in the 'Develop' module.
Upon first import, this image looked fine in the 'Library' & 'Slideshow' modules. After making some edits (color, tone, etc.) in the 'Develop' module, I ended up getting this hideous preview in the 'Library' & 'Slideshow' modules:
    http://web.mac.com/rishisanyal/Lightroom/07-0310_BandingBlocking.jpg
You people with LCDs will be able to see the JPEG artifacts better than those with CRTs, since LCDs tend to be sharper.
So, the obvious question is this:
Does LR, when *re-generating* previews for edited images, ignore the quality-setting for JPEG previews (which I have set to 'high')??

  • Purchasing Webspace - how to ensure maximum security?

    Hi there,
My company recently purchased an additional web address so that it directs users to our main website (only slightly different web address to the existing one, so it is a relevant address).  We paid around £8.99 UK, which is something like $10 US.
However, I've just found out that our agent in Canada has purchased a different address, and for that they paid around £100.  Any idea why they paid so much for that address - basically, is that address more secure (as in harder for another party to challenge for) and/or are there any other added benefits when paying more?  The address I purchased the cheaper space was from a site called Freeola, if that helps.
Furthermore, whilst I am here, is it considered good practice (or rather, not bad practice) to purchase similar addresses to your main address and link them back to the main website?  Obviously, I realise buying an address like www.nikecola.com and directing that to your, for example, cheese selling company website is bad because it's not liked.
    Thanks,
    Mark

If you register a domain name new, then you only need to pay the registration fee. If you're buying a domain name that someone else registered, then they can pretty much charge whatever they want for it.

It is not generally good practice to ask questions on a forum that do not fit the purpose of the forum. This is a forum for discussing the Web graphics and prototyping application Fireworks. It is not a general Internet business practices forum. You might get more relevant advice from the SitePoint Forums: http://www.sitepoint.com/forums/

  • Windows Server 2008 R2 Security Event Log Maximum Size

I have a customer with logging requirements on domain controllers that are exceeding the maximum log size they have configured for the security log.  When they attempted to increase the maximum size of the security event log via Group Policy, the settings
did not take effect.  When an attempt was made to increase the security event log manually on the domain controller via the properties of the log, an error is generated whenever the value was changed.
The Maximum Log Size specified is not valid.  It is too large or too small. The Maximum Log Size will be set to the following: 196608 KB
The 196608 KB value is the value that it is currently set at.  Testing on other logs, application, system, has lead to the same result.
wevtutil.exe sl security /ms:<n> produces similar results.  There is no error message given but the value doesn't change when you run wevtutil.exe gl security
When viewing the registry value MaxSize under HKLM\Current Control Set\Services\EventLog\Security the change is reflected, but the log does not seem to get any larger.
What one would expect to be a two minute change in a group policy object has turned into something much more difficult.  Any idea what could be causing this?

I verified that it was not another policy - the domain is pretty simple without many policies, only policies applied are:
Default Domain Policy (no event log settings)
Company Domain Policy (no event log settings)
Default Domain Controller Policy (no event logs settings)
Company Domain Controller Policy (...\Event Log\Maximum security log size 4194240 kilobytes)
The value was 196608 before, the plan was to change the group policy setting to 4194240 and I expected it to be that easy.  However, the values didn't change.
    4194240 is divisible by 64
Used multiple tools to try and change
    Group Policy
    Event Viewer
    wevtutil.exe
    registry editor
While some of the methods display a larger event log, the actual size of the event log still seems to be limited to 196608 kb.
    Thanks,
    Joe

  • How much deep I have to erase my disk after malaware infection? (security option)

    Hello,
I got a Malaware from a website and I want to be sure that i will completely remove from my Mac.
Is it relevant how much, sorry for the incorrect term, "deep" I will erase the disk?
Does it need the maximum security option or a quick erase will solve my problem?
    Thanks for the patience

  • Security tips for a noob.

What can I do to a fresh Arch install for maximum security? I want to use a mail-client (I'm not sure which one yet) and I also ssh into a machine with sensitive data, and I have a wireless only connection.
What apps should I install/configure to stop someone from using my wireless connection against me?

of course WPA can be cracked enough publications about this can be found on the net, reason why was moved to WPA2 and eventually to WPA2-RADIUS.
Caused by weakness of pre-shared key.
in contrast to WEP, attacks against WPA with pre-shared key do not require a large amount of collected packets. You can perform it being in the range of AP.
Succesful attack against WPA-PSK requires capturing  the four-way EAPOL handshake.
Simply wait for legitimate EAPL handshake to be transmitted and capture it run offline dictionary attack. Anything below 21 characters can be cracked in reasonable time.
    WPA2-RADIUS has no known vulnerabilities.

  • Actiontec Security Break?

I have recently had someone hack into my machine sitting behind a verizon actiontec firewall.
At this time, I found that the person gave himself a lot of outgoing and incoming permissions on the router firewall. I then changed passwords on the router, removed the permissions and switched on the machine, without actually cleaning the machine. Promptly, I found the router broken into again. Telnet and remote adminstration are disabled. How could this happen that a strong router password can be broken into in less than 5 minutes of exposure to an infected machine inside the firewall? Do these routers have backdoors? How do I enable maximum security on these routers, and allow outgoing connections to be  only http? Thanks.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

It is likely you have an infected computer which is submitting UPnP requests.   Turn UPnP off on the router which will prevent it from "trusting" computers on the local network to tell it what port mappings to define and then get a good scanner to check out your computer (like Malwarebytes).

  • Fake Microsoft Security Essentials Alert Rogue: Windows Emergency System

The Malwarebytes research team has determined that Windows Emergency System is a fake anti-malware application. These so-called "rogues" use intentional false positives to convince users that their systems have been compromised. Then they try to sell you their software, claiming it will remove these threats. In extreme cases the false threats are actually the very trojans that advertise or even directly install the rogue.

I had been getting a popup that said it was Windows Securiy Essentials
claiming it had found these malware files…
    trojan psw win32 launch
    hacktool win32 /welevate.a
    adware win32 fraud
After doing a lot of digging  I finally did find instances of these files on the machine and removed them. As I recall the process involved some registry hacks. In any event. I thought I had gotten rid of them but it appears they are either
back or they’re not originating from my machine.
I’m still getting this same issue but its’ only from one site so far. I have run trendmicro’s ´Titanium™ Maximum Security”,
also Malwarebytes Premium plus, “Microsoft Safety Scanner” and of course Windows Defender.
I had originally been using theTrendmicro
also ran HijackThis ( found nothing ) and had only recently switched to Kaspersky after reading over some reviews
on the two softwares. However Kaspersky didn’t seem to want to play nice with Windows 8.1 so I switched back to Trendmicro. Cant know for sure but I suppose it could have been the malware issue causing problems for Kaspersky. So now i’ve run just about
everything I can think of. The thing is none of these programs find anything on my computer. Everything I have
    Trendmicro,
    Kaspersky,
    Windows Definder,
    Microsoft Safety Scanner,
    Malwarebytes,
    Hijackthis
Says my machine is clean and free of any malware or viruses
Whatever this thing Is, it’s invisible nothing seems to be able to find it

  • Selling Mac, can hard drive be securely erased?

I know that Leopard allows 35-pass erase as it's maximum security level for formatting hard drives - but can this be trusted when selling a computer? I've heard people saying that the only secure way of removing data from a hard drive is to smash it with a hammer.
I'm planning to sell my PowerMac G5, and have a couple of low capacity SATA hard drives that I was planning to include with it.
My data isn't 'top secret' but it's possible that caches might contain my credit card details or other similar data. How safe is the 35-pass erase?

    Hi bilbo_baggins-
Unless you are selling it to some government spooks you should be fine
If you are that concerned, go buy a cheap, low-capacity SATA drive and install that to be sold with the machine.
    Luck-

  • WRT55AG and Macbook security issues

Hi... I currently have the WRT55AG which is connected to a PC and cable modem.  I also have a macbook laptop.  The combo has been somewhat smooth for almost a year (just a few power cycles a month).
A few days ago the macbook stopped picking up the router.  Power cycles didn't help.  I decided to reboot the router and install the latest firmware.  I've spent HOURS trying to reconfigure everything.
For some reason, my macbook won't connect to the router with WPA settings, both TKIP and AES.  I finally got it to work with the security set on WEP, 128bit encryption and with a key that the router generated.
After reading a few postings, a lot of people suggest WPA for maximum security.  Is there anything I can do to make my macbook work with WPA or is it a lost cause?   Is it really THAT big of a deal?  I'm just glad I finally got my macbook working after about 4-5 HOURS of fooling with all this!
    Thanks for reading. =)

So i assume that you have already Resetted your Router and Re-configured all the settings on your router back again. Have you created a New Wireless Network Name or stil the same Old SSID. If the SSID is still old, may you can create a New Wireless Network Name  and try connecting to that network.
If required you can remove all the Prefered Network list from your MAC computer and later you can try connecting to your Wireless Network using WPA security and check if you are able to go online or not.

  • Please tell me how to print an entire e-mail received on free hotmail, not just one page that only gives part of message

I have tried adjusting the number of pages in the print window but this has no effect. If I ask for the e-mail on screen to be printed, it will not print more than the one page. This is not acceptable when the entire text content is required. I'm sorry to be a pain, but I get frustrated knowing that the information is there and I cannot find a way of getting it all printed off. Please Help an old duffer striving to cope with a system that has no soft spot for an old codger.

I don't believe that this issue is a Firefox issue. I think that it is an issue on Microsoft's end.
I good may to avoid this issue, is to copy and paste the email text into a word processing program. You can then print from there.
Sorry for any inconvenience that this may cause. I hope that you continue to browse with Mozilla Firefox in the future.
<b>NOTE: </b>It is important to always keep Firefox up-to-date. Doing so will ensure maximum security and functionality. Please update to the most recent version of Firefox as soon as possible.
