MBP 17" just shipped

My 17" MBP shipped today and is due to be delivered to me in the UK on or before 12 May. Nice!
Anyone else's shipped yet?
Awaiting MBP 17", 2.16 Ghz, 7200 Rpm, 100G HD, 1G RAM   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

You will get an enabler for 802.11n with the new Airport Extreme base station. Apple may also provide this enabler via Sotware Update although I don't believe they will until the 11n standard has been ratified.

  • MBP or just MB?

I was just thinking whether I should get a MBP or just stay with my MB?
I was using the MB for final cut and stuff and I'm totally annoyed with the way that it always crash while rendering or just simply watching stuff in the viewer. Moreover, doing chapter markers while I'm doing DVDs using DVD studio pro takes FOREVER (since I hate iDVD anyways).
Another thing is that the hard drive is running out and I can barely find anything to delete and clear up space (since I have 60GB for bootcamp).
What should I use considering the points above and that I am not even in college yet and have to beg my parents when I want new computers!

You can easily put any sized HDD into a MB. So that's not an issue. A new MB and a new MBP both max RAM out at 4GM, so that's also a non-issue. I don't believe that the crashes you see have anything to do with the MB either. So that leaves the display quality, size, and performance.
How much is that worth to you? As a parent, I don't have much sympathy for the "bug you parents for a fancy computer" approach. If this is important to you, then can you work out some kind of arrangement so that you get a summer job so that you pay, say, the cost of a MBP over a new MB? Show them that this is important to you by putting your money where your mouth is.

  • 17" MBP has been shipped

For those who are expecting a 17-inch MBP: I received today a notice from Apple that my MBP has been shipped. It is now in the hands of TNT somewhere in the Netherlands and will arrive at my place (in Germany) on Monday or Tuesday.

    Hello,
    It happens in all apps.
Thanks for your reply.  Thus far, the update seems to have resolved the problem.  I hope it continues to be resolved!
    Thanks again!

  • Anybody gonna cancel order for 17"MBP C2D if shipping gets delayed again?

Just wondering if anybody else will want to cancel their order if our "updated" shipping date estimate is pushed back again. This is my first Apple (not including my ipod) and it has been a bad experience so far. I was looking forward to my new mac world but right now my trusty PC is looking better and better. If the delay was for something other than supply issues I might not want to get on this sinking ship.

I feel your pain...I ordered the new MBP C2D then cancelled the order, because I wanted to wait for some more feedback. I had ordered a custom configuration and when I called Apple to hold the shipment until I was got back to them they said that normally they won't do that and with it being a custom config it was not returnable. If i cancelled before shipment I would be able to in essence get a refund but in that case I wasn't even being billed for it since they don't charge the credit card until it is shipped. this all happened last night (sunday). I was made aware that if it were shipped anyway because it had already been built I could still return it for a refund since I had made the decision and it is on file with Apple before fedex got their hands on it.
fast forward to this morning.....Fedex got it before Apple pulled it from the loading dock......in the end, I don't really mind the situation. I will just drop it back at fedex. apple didn't pressure me into keeping it and even helped me expedite the return. I also don't need a replacement computer, so I am not in a bind.
Also, I guess, it i needed a new 'puter I would be ****** off with the delay....on the other hand, I would anticipate any delays or problems if I needed a new one.
good luck and hang in there....you won't be disappointed (i hope)

  • UK - just shipped - week 37!

The title says it all, really. I ordered on the launch day as soon as the online store came back up. It's been prepared to ship since early on Monday morning (UK time), and in the last hour the order status changed to shipped.
However, looking at the online invoice from the order status page it looks like I'm getting a week 37! How is it that these are still floating around? Surely the stuff shipping out this week should be week 39 models..?

No. However I have tested 10 iPod Touch in the "week 37" batch, two of which I owned the others were demo units at Apple Stores and they all failed the screen test! We have numerious post here of week 37 owners who had bad screens and some who like me observed the in store units were also week 37 models and failed the test.
The problem doesn't present itself immediately. It only effects dark movies and photos, so a lot of people probably have this problem and don't know or it or simply think "that's just the way it is".

  • Missing Manual has just shipped

I ordered the Pogue "Mising Manual" from Amazon a while ago. It was then delayed. I just received notification that it has shipped.
Now maybe I will be able to figure this Leopard thing out
I also have the pocket O'Reilly Leopard book which is helpful for knowing all the things Leopard has, but not very useful in accessing them. It no doubt was written over a beta version of the OS. For the price, it's worth it.

Interestingly, this book is currently #1 in Amazon computing sales, and more surprisingly, #47 in overall book sales. There must be a lot of leapin' Leopards out there.

  • How long does it take for a custom MBP to be shipped to an Apple Store?

Being OCD, I am going crazy waiting for my new MBP to arrive at my local store. I ordered a customized model and the email sent by Apple sais it would arrive on the 24th. Does anypne have experience with shipping to store and early arrivals? I ordered it on the 13th.
    Thanks.
    Jon

Ship to store ship times are usually correct maybe a day earlier but not much more

  • Time to send in the old MBP or just buy applecare and pray?

    Hello All,
Last week I sold my life (my 2x 1.8Ghz Powermac and 1.33 14" ibook) for a Macbook Pro. I purchased a refurbished MBP 2.0 Ghz and i was so excited, but now, I have the whine (which i fixed using QuietMBP a nice program. and I keep getting these painful shocks on my forearm while I am using it (while its plugged in). I still can return it but I dont know what to do!?! I still have over a month of school left and need a computer. Should I just sent this beast in or buy applecare and wait?

If you need a computer and cannot get hold of another one if you send the MBP in then I guess you have to hold on to your purchase in order to complete your school work.
If you feel that you can live with the workarounds to the whine then you may as well keep the machine and enjoy all the other great features that work well.
Once you keep the machine and register it with Applecare then it's more or less "yours for life" unless you try to sell it later on, though I'm not sure if these early MBPs will fetch a good price down the road if later revisions come out without these (or other major) problems (think: the hot revision A of the Powerbook 12").
So, the question really is: is your current MBP something you are either prepared to live with and enjoy for a long time or maybe take a hit on during re-sale later on? Or would you sleep better at nights having returned it, making do with a temporary machine and waiting for something better to come along?
Another thought: since nobody has officially said that the CPU whine is a recognized problem yet, it may be something that is recognized and fixed down the line, but the possibility also exists that it never will get fixed, except in the next revision of the product. So, I wouldn't count on a fix at this stage.

  • New MBP Core2Duo - just my observation

I just switched over from my MB. I loved the size of the MB, but the features and bigger screen combined with the faster processor and 128mb video card made up my mind. I just wanted to say my new MBP is runs much cooler that my old MB and my first older MBP. Have a great day!

Thanks for posting, good to know!

  • MBP Wackiness (Just a thought and a Phone call)

So there are us "fence-sitters" who are clearly leaning in the direction of buying the MBP, regardless. But all this talk of revisions and weird noises has got us bothered.
So I did the only thing I could do: I made a phone call. Now FIRST and foremost I am not making light of a very real issue that has surfaced. I am simply reporting to those of us who are worried about purchasing one.
I called the retailer from whom I purchase all my stuff from and spoke with the guy who helps me. Well, actually I give him my credit card number and he sends me what I ask for. For posterity and the fact that I didn't ask for permission I am not mentioning the organization or the name of the guy that takes my money. So this is today's conversation:
"So just be straight with how bad are the problems?"
"We've sold more than a hundred. We've gotten three back"
    "What about the whine?"
"One. One of those was a whine issue.''
"Do you get any other information regarding the problems."
"You think we would, but a lot of times they treat us like mushrooms"
"So, you think I could order one and it wouldn't be a problem"
"Well, so far we're 99% and they took that one back."
So if it's worth anything to you fence sitters: I'm ordering one. Well, I still have to wait for the funds. But by the end of the month, I'll let you know how it's going.
      Mac OS X (10.4.5)

I'm not saying that your "guy" is lying, but it's VERY possible that he could be. How often do you make a return to a salesman? Never. Unless it's a one man band, however this cannot be the case if they've sold over a 100.
This guy is a salesman, do you think his boss would be impressed if he didn't say whatever possible to make a sale? I bet his boss would have the logic of "sell the product now, deal with any issues later".
The other issue is, your "guy" doesn't know how many people are A) just living with it, B) contacted Apple directly and they are taking care of the problem.
Let's be honest, we know the problem exists, some people can live with it (like myself, I'm a sucker for the latest a greatest first gen crap,) and some people can't. If you're one of those people who think everything has to be perfect in this world and humans cannot make any errors, don't buy now.

  • MBP 13in Just Got It-Quick Question

I am having a stupid moment. Just got the 13 in and I have the 15 in MBP. I somehow got the App folder on the Dock which is where I want it. I have tried to put the App folder on the dock on the 13 in but it just isn't happening. I have tried to drag to the dock it from the side bar and any other place I have found it. Just won't go on the dock. What am I doinf wrong?

Dragging it to the wrong part of the Dock, perhaps?
It needs to go to the right of the divider if the Dock is at the bottom of your screen, and below the divider if the Dock is at either side of the screen. You can't put it in the area where your individual app icons are.

  • E3000 problem (just shipped to cisco)

alright so i had to go bad to my old linksys router after a defective router, it would take me four time to connect to xbox live and then 30 minutes to connect to an xbox live party mean while everything else was working but not  as perfectly as when i first setted up the router , mean while after getting a " can not connect to xbox live party there maybe network problems" i finally gave in after a month  1/2 of calling microsoft / ISP  then microsoft i finally tried linksys teach support they was amazing at helping me ! i tried all troubleshooting steps with both linksys and microsoft! i finally knew what the problem was and i am wondering if anyone else has or did have this problem ? i am supposely getting a replacement unit and it's cover  and i'm just wondering if its all the stuff i have connected ?

any ideas would be helpful  including people phones who do use WI-FI - thanks! CBerry
     - i am trying to figure out what caused it - i am a computer nerd and i tried port forwarding/port triggering and manually config the xbox to the router then my xbox went strict and my nat type is open *when the e3000 was contacted to the cable modem* and all the ports on both was open and i was still having a connection problem! i need some ideas on what caused it to go bad i know i kept the router up to date.. so i do not know what caused it and i am still puzzled by it

I will let you know , all I know is one day these problems came up at first I figured  its just my xbox acting up and then it happened again  a day later so i resetted  the modem (ARRIS MODEM)  then the next night midnight or so DNS SERVER can not connect to xbox live servers (that was temp fixed with port triggering for like a week) and then a week after  that i restored it to factory settings and everything was fine intil i had to change my settings again  and it was like a month and half of this repeating phone calls to microsoft and my ISP and the  service calls i made twice in one week.. and finally my ISP ran a test with the modem and router connection and both online and they got a error to come up on my modem and then when they told me to try to contact linksys again there made be a problem with my router  and of course i figured i spent $160 for the router and then a monthly charge for my modem and i was at my last nerve  i figured i would try  cisco one more time and   after working with the ISP company and my modem being just replaced in march they ruled out my modem and i by passed the router at one point and plugged my xbox into my modem and everything worked no problems and then when i rehooked up the E3000 router then the problems started again 30 minutes to connect to anyone resetting my modem and leaving the router unplugged for 20 minutes and i kept having to do that intil june 9th and i wasnt gonna go out and buy another router for the same problems to happen - i am glad it's getting replaced
but during the time i had the e3000  - here was the problems  - "could not connect to xbox live party, there maybe network problems "  then  "joining party......" then  it would repeat  and then friends trying to connect to my party "joining party" then they wouldn't be able to connect to me they would get the same error when both our nat type's was open
what i did before sending the router out -

  • Even on my new MBP Safari just hangs. And on the 2 MacBooks too

Wow. So I've bought myself a MacBook Pro. 2ghz. Up from a 1.67ghz AL PowerBook.
I had posted before with my PB on how Safari just hangs at loading pages. The blue URL bar just hangs at 3/4 of the way. And sits thre for minutes or forever.
My only solution has always been to just do Apple Key and letter R as part of each page I go to in Safari. And this loads the page and it comes up instantly. So it's the initial going to a new page that chokes Safari.
So I upgrade to a 2ghz MacBook Pro and two 2ghz Macbooks.
And wouldn't you know it, Safari does EXACTLY the same thing. Hangs. Chokes. Beach Ball of death too now. ***
And I also had previously posted on visiting the Apple Store and Safari hung up on their machines too.
I keep my Safari cache folder read only. And the Favicon folder also read only. I have an honest 30Mbps cable connection. And the kicker, like before-
Firefox flies and loads pages instantly! With Safari hanging and choking, I'll open Firefox and go to the page Safari is hangin and choking and, BAM. Page loads right up in Firefox. WOW
What is it with Safari Apple? I can't imagine one PC user switching to Mac if on testing the web in an Apple Store and the web "seems so slow" to them. It's the dog Safari.
So as I type this on my new MBP using Firefox, does anyone think Apple will ever address this issue? Others have posted saying they get the exact same thing with their copy of Safari.
Can any imagine Steve in his office using Safari thinking this is the way a browser is supposed to work? He must be using Firefox too.
MacBook Pro 2.0ghz Mac OS X (10.4.7) 2gig of Ram

    No it's Safari.
Here are screen shots of the hang:

I have three people here that this happens too. At different locations. 2 MacBooks and one MacBook Pro. We all updated from 2 iBooks and 1 PowerBook.
And Safari does this. This is how Safari works. If we go to the exact smae sites in Firefox, the sites load instantly. Insantly!!
I think Apple needs to ddress this issue. As I've found here in the discussions, this IS how Safari works many many thousands of users.

  • My Early 2011 MBP Has Just Started Running Extremely Hot.

Hi there. As in the title I have an early 2011 MBP, 15 inch, £1550 model. I've been playing Football Manager a lot recently, and sure it runs at around 50-60 degrees but that's fine. However now i'm just on FireFox, been on for around 30 minutes, and my battery is being sapped as if I were playing a game and i'm at 60 degrees average with SMC at 5000 RPM as well as a notebook cooler which has a fan built in. Usually I run at around 30 on the internet, 40 is fine though.
Any reasons why it is doing this? Nothing is running at over 5% in the Activity Monitor. FireFox seems to be spiking though, at like 30%. It's really annoying because I want to play Football Manager but when I put it on, it's at like 70/80 degrees. Super, super hot considering I have lots of cooling stuff. Any clues anybody, please!?

"Nothing is running at over 5% in the Activity Monitor. FireFox seems to be spiking though, at like 30%."
Do you have "All Processes" selected in Activity Monitor? If not, select it in the drop-down menu and then see whether there's something using a large percentage of your CPU.

  • Games on MBP or just MB

Hey guys I just have a quick question. I am debating between getting the MacBook Pro 17" and the Black MacBook. I'm mainly looking to do some gaming and the only game I've really noticed that the MacBook can't play that the MacBook Pro can support is Crysis. I want a Mac really bad and was just wondering what would be the better choice. I also want to use it for editing photos and making movies. If anyone has any feedback about gaming on their MacBook Pro or their MacBook if you can let me know if getting the pro is needed that would be great I don't want to spend the 2799 but if its needed than I have no problem spending it I would just like to know if it Is needed. If you guys can help me out at all it would be greatly appriciated.
    Thanks guys.

If you can afford it, defiantly go with the Mac Book Pro. I've owned both. The MacBook Pro has dedicated graphics circuit with it's own memory. My old MacBook's fan would run wide open just watching YouTube videos. If you want to do video work too, you need the extra power the MBP can provide. I would put 4G of RAM in it also. You can buy third-party RAM and install it yourself to save money.
Wait until Tuesday's Macworld announcements. You may be buying a new laptop just at the right time--especially if upgraded MBPs are announced.
