MBP freezes when doing too much and cmd-tabbing

My MBP sometimes freezes when I am doing a bunch of stuff on my laptop and then I cmd-tab to another application. When I say my laptop freezes, I mean that the system is frozen, keyboard input does not work, but moving the mouse DOES work (even though clicking on anything doesn't do anything.) I have to do a hard reset to get out of this, meaning I press and hold on the power button until the computer shuts down.
Any suggestions as to how I can fix this? I've encountered this numerous times, typically once a week usually. It actually seems like it happens during times when I am cmd-tabbing very rapidly (i.e. when doing web development, I will cmd-tab to my browser, refresh, cmd-tab to my text editor, etc. but how can this freeze my powerful system?! I only typically use about 1.5 GB of the RAM).
Thanks in advance!

If there any pattern to what applications you have open when you get the freezing? You will probably find it's an application rather than the application switcher itself. Also, check your Dashboard widgets. If you are using 3rd party widgets try closing them and see if the problem goes away.
You can also try deleting your Finder preferences by dragging the file…
~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist
… to the Trash (don't empty it just yet) and then immediately restarting and see if that makes a difference.

    Hi,
We sincerely apologize for the problem customers are facing while using a trackpad with Photoshop Elements 11 & 12 on Mac OSX 10.10 (Yosemite).
We have been actively working with Apple to resolve this problem as quickly as possible. We're hopeful this will get completely resolved in an upcoming update of Yosemite(MAC 10.10).
In the meanwhile, you have two options to work around this problem:
    1. Option1: Use a mouse instead of the trackpad
    2. Option2: Install a plug-in which should workaround the problem
    Plug-in installation instructions:
    1. Close Photoshop Elements
    2. Download this zip file to a location you can easily find (e.g. your desktop)
    3. Unzip the file, WhiteWindowWorkaround.plugin, and move it to the Plug-In folder:
    • For Elements 12 – //Applications/Adobe Photoshop Elements 12/Support Files/Plug-Ins/
    • For Elements 11 - //Applications/Adobe Photoshop Elements 11/Support Files/Plug-Ins/
You can verify the plug-in is installed by launching the Photoshop Elements Editor and choosing Help > System Info... Scroll to the bottom of the text in the dialog and look for the plug-in name "WhiteWindowWorkaround.plugin".
Note: This plugin is a temporary workaround and should be used until this issue is addressed in Mac OSX 10.10 (Yosemite). Please remove this plugin once the issue is officially resolved by Apple.
If you are using a stylus in conjunction with a trackpad, you might see issues with your trackpad. Workaround in this particular case is to use mouse instead of the trackpad.
    Hope this helps!

  • NSFileHandle freezes when receiving too much data?

    Hi,
I am running two applications, on 2 separate stations.
The first one which is an iPhone (OS2.2)
The seconde one a PC computer (Win XP)
The iPhone is a Client whose communication is managed by NSFileHandle.
The PC is using an Asynchronous socket class and acting as a Server.
It's mainly a one-way TCP communication : the data are sent by the PC server to the iPhone Client.
Now : as long as the amount of data does not overflow some stack (which I don't know), the server app runs well, and the client deals with incoming Data without a pb.
But as soon as this "stack" is overflowed, Servers skips some sending (to avoid blocing a in a non blocing mode), which is not really a problem since I can afford loosing some data, but I also have odd behaviors that are not the same on Iphone or iPhone Simulator, but have obviously the same source :
    - the iPhone Client runs normally (even during the overflow) until the App suddenly closes on its own. While it is running, and until it stops, it receives and processes -with no evident problem- incoming data (those that have been successfully sent by the Server).
    - the iPhone Simulator suddenly freezes : when I pause it, it appears that it is always stucked in the [MyNsFileHandle readDataOfLengh:MySize];, though I thought it should return an empty NSData instead of freezing.
Since I have sent lot of data, I know they are available... but it looks like they are not. I also thought that NSFileHandle's - (NSData *)readDataOfLength:(NSUInteger)length would raise some kind of exception in case of a problem (such as described in the Message documentation), but instead of it, it is just stucked here.
Then, I wonder if there is a way to manage such a data Overflow so that I can avoid the app to crash or freeze
Since I am also uneasy with Apple exceptions, it is possible that I actually don't look well although some are raised here. In such a case, could you explain to me how to catch them?
I hope I gave sufficient information about my problem. If I happened to have not, don't hesitate to ask for more about it.

Problem with the cmd-tab keyboard shortcut now cured with the latest software update, so the original problem must have been a software glitch.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
First, when you are going to turn off or restart your Mac, you will see a box called "Reopen windows when logging back in" in the shutdown or restart window. Untick this box and see if the App Store opens automatically in the next startup.
If it starts, open System Preferences > Users and Groups > Login Items, and see if the App Store shows up. If so, remove it from this list

In Safari, my iMac sometimes zooms way too much and will not zoom back.  I have a wireless mouse set to zoom in and out on double tap, but the excessive zooms happen with no taps.  A page zooms in so less than 1/4 of the page is visible and nothing I do will zoom back out, command minus doesn't do it, double tap on mouse does not zoom out, and the window will not scroll to show any of the rest of the page.  reloading the page does not help.  Loading a different page gives me a normal view again.

If it were a tweaked setting, it should happen less randomly.  And there should be no settings that could override the zoom setting in unversal Access and the Mouse zoom preferences.
In addition, this only happens in Safari 6, and seems to happen more fredquently on some websites and not on others.  That suggests some sort of conflict in the site code with Safari and Apple wireless mouse code.  It does not happen in Mail, Word, Excel, Photoshop, Illustrator, or other software as far as I can tell.

    Inspection Lot : 10000283512

    Hi,
Did you use the follow up action in the UD code selection? It looks from the error that program is unable to find the UD code.
Kindly check the configurations in QM and see that everything is working fine?
Alternatively, if you are using the follow up action, then remove that first. Do the GR using MIGO -- this will create the inspection lot. Confirm the inspection using QA11 by entering the UD code for acceptance. Thereafter the the stock will rest in QI status. Use MB1B and perform the transfer posting with movement 321 to bring the stock to unrestricted use.

  • My phone is freezing, restarting too much, and erased all apps!?

I have a serious problem i believe. For about 10 days i can hardly using my phone. Phone has started too freeze and restart itself too much. And 3 days ago it has erased all the apps for home screen but i can see apps are still covers same amout of memory. My apps store is not showing anything also. For the question what caused this; only thing comes to my mind is the last app i installed. (wikiplaces app) What should I do? what is this? Does not see like ram overuse causşng this. (2,5 gb used memory on phone)

It might work, it might not.  Many users get only the latest backup to choose from when performing a restore.  If your backup was made after the delete, then it won't work.   If you do try a restore, I would strongly advise that you sync your photos from your device to a compter using USB (that's safer than relying on photo stream).  There are countless posts by users who restored and lost all their photos.

  • 2008 17" MBP freezes when warm and/or moved.

My 17" MBP (2008 2.5 G) freezes. Temperature is definitely a factor: the warmer it is, the more likely to freeze. But physical handling of the laptop also can cause it, much sooner than temp. I use a Targus USB-powered double-fan lap desk to try to keep it cool, but if I need it to keep going, I have to put it down on the floor by the fireplace to catch a cold down-draft for few minutes.
Related (possibly): it also loses it's Airport connection as it warms up (before it freezes up).
I still have 5 months of Applecare left, but I hate the idea of being without it for days while they try to figure it out. Any ideas??

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
A good first step would be to try running the extended version of the Apple Hardware test yourself and see if you get any error codes. If you do, call Apple or go to an Apple store to see what they mean. Apple is the keeper of the error codes.
The AHT is on one of your gray system discs. If you have a lot of RAM installed, it could take quite a while to run the extended version. You might want to do this when you won't be using it for a couple of hours.
If you have access to an Apple Store, they can run a different hardware test from their store feed. They just plug in an ethernet cable to run it and it doesn't take long. The one they run in the Apple store takes less than 15 minutes to run.
If the hardware tests show what is wrong, then once you have a diagnosis, you may be able to arrange for a repair locally at the Apple Store or an AASP and maybe not be without it for very long.
Even if you end up sending it off to the repair depot--always a good option-- the turnaround may be very fast. My niece sent her original MBP off on a Tuesday evening, and had it back the following Thursday morning.
Also, you can use the widget iStatPro to check on how well your fans are working. If they are not working properly, that could certainly be contributing to the heat build up. If that's all that's wrong, replacing the fans shouldn't take long at all. Look for one fan at 0 RPM or one running much slower than the other.
    Good luck!

  • Please help: My MBP freezes when not connected to a power supply.

When I am working on my MBP (specs below) without it connected to the power supply, it will freeze every once in a while. I have no option but to hold down the power button to do a hard restart – and then it takes a good five minutes to boot back up.
Does anyone know what the problem might be? It NEVER freezes when it is connected to power.
BTW – the MBP freezes randomly, *sometimes the battery will be near full, sometimes only half full,* so I don't think it has to do with the amount of power left in the battery.
Thanks in advance for any replies.

  • App stops working when given too much xml

I have an AS3 application I built for a client about a year
ago. The application loads a dynamic page of xml data and then
builds the screen using that data. He has used the application
happily for a year and recently complained that it stopped working
and asked me to debug. It turns out the number of items in my
client's database have exceeded 1200 items and at ROUGHLY that
magic number the screen fails to build (I determined this through
trial and error by trimming down the data page). There is nothing
in my code that alludes to any limit. I don't believe this is a
problem of the xml data CFM taking too long to pull from the
database (for debug purposes I have hardcoded that data page to
eliminate a slow database issue). My IOErrorEvent.IO_ERROR function
is never called, so the app seems to be under the impression it is
reading the XML completely. The BuildScreen() function simply loops
through the .length of the xml, so there are no limits there I have
purposely imposed. The application definitely stops at this magic
number of 1200 (give or take 5-10 items). There are no errors in
the xml data itself. At this magic number of 1200 if I refresh the
page over and over it works sometimes and fails others. If I add 20
more items to the list it never loads. If I delete 20 items it
always works. I'm going to put the code in its entirety below. I
would SO MUCH appreciate if someone can help me understand what is
    going on. Thankyou.

I quickly threw this code together to try to describe
by problem. I didn't think it was prudent to post all
the code in my web app. (servlet happens to be the
context path, and I just threw the tag in to duplicate
the problem I'm having).Prudence is your call, but nobody will be able to help unless they can see what the problem is.
It's a difficult call, because posting too much will scare people off, too. (I know I don't want to read your entire app.)
The log doesn't really help.Neither does this post.
Needless to say, you've got a deployment problem. Tomcat 5.0 works; so does the JSTL 1.1 tag library. You're doing something wrong.
If you've never used JSTL before, I'd recommend that you read something serious, like Hans Bergsten's O'Reilly book on JSPs. He writes it entirely in terms of JSTL, because that's what people should use from now on. I think his 3rd edition even has the JSTL 1.1 tag library.

  • Dreamweaver crashes/freezes when doing find in site

When I use "find" it works fine for a single document but, if I choose "find next" after setting the search to the entire site (or a folder), it performs the search and starts to bring up the correct file, then it crashes.  Behavior is the rainbow wheel of death indefinitately.  I have to force quit and restart.
I have reproduced this about a dozen times.
I quit DW, trashed my cache file, emptied the trash, and restarted.  This has made no change.  I have no add-ons of any kind.
I have quit out of other programs and run DW with plenty of RAM available.  When it freezes I look in Activity Monitor and can see that RAM is still very available and CPU usage is high, but not excessive.  The DW program is unavailable.  I've tried waiting out the freeze but it doesn't end.
So far, I have had no problems with DW doing other things.  Not even when I open 20+ files at once and available RAM is a tiny sliver.  In that case, I get freezes that last a few seconds, and the program is slow, but everything still works.
I searched extensively for other reports of this bug and found nothing about the find feature but that CS5.5 seems to be unstable and crashes a lot.  Some reports have linked crashes to using FTP so I tried running find without first using FTP and it makes no difference.
I need to update a website with hundreds of pages and it's really untenable to search for broken links and outdated text by hand.
Running CS5.5.  I just got this a couple weeks ago but I previously ran CS3 and could use find in the entire site (the same site actually) just fine.
I have an iMac 2.16GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 2.5GB RAM.  Running OS 10.5.8.
I've got to have this feature working.  Please help.
    Thanks,
    Cyndi

Hmmm...doing some tests limiting the search to certain subfolders or to selected files.  It seems the find function is working fine until it gets to a particular file.  There are several such files.  It starts to open that file then I get the rainbow wheel of death without end.  When I force quit and relaunch, Dreamweaver remembers this file as the last one opened.  I can open any of these files no problem (either from the splashpage or directly from the site directory) and I can search within them without incident.
What is the search string you are using?  Have you tried making fragments of those files to see if you can identify the block of code that causes the freeze?
Besides, I can't imagine it would be a good idea to switch back and forth between different versions of the same program.  There is not just one term I need to search for.  This is an ongoing project.
It woudn't make any difference at all to use CS3 for this.
Okay, so here's the question, what is causing find to hang like this?  It's not something stopping the file from opening or being searched.  I will gladly remove any bad code or whatever it might be, but some of these files are huge (like 100 pages if printed).  I'm fixing code DW is marking as bad but that doesn't seem to be enough.
Yes, that is the question!  I have no idea, but sounds like you are on the right path to finding out....
In the DW Reports panel, there is a tab called "LINK CHECKER".
Under "Site: Reports..." there is no link checker anywhere.  I found nothing else called reports.
What is the search string you are using?
A variety of things: lanmind, lmi.net, lye, chemical.
Have you tried making fragments of those files to see if you can identify the block of code that causes the freeze?
I just tried it.  I took one of the smaller affected files (I tested as many as I could (it only will cause a freeze if the search term appears in the file) and found 8 "bad" files) and broke it into two halves, using the same header and footer for each.  The original filename is y.htm.  I broke it into y-test-1 and y-test-2.  1 was fine, 2 was bad.  I then broke 2 into two files, y-test-3 and y-test-4.  And they're both okay!!  WTH.
I noticed that the source code had some bolded text.  It shouldn't be bold there, just in the display, and it was pretty random.  But there were 3 parts to the file (annotated links) with some bolded source text.  These appeared in y-test-4.  I used save-as to create the test files, not cut and paste.  Yet y-test-4 does not freeze up.
When I deleted the 3 annotated links from y-test-2, it stopped freezing when being pulled up during a search (I highlight one or more files, making sure they are not already open, and choose "Find in: Selected files in site").  I deleted them one at a time and it wasn't until I deleted the last one that it made a difference.  Then I put back the first two and left the third one out.  And the file is okay.
But I still can't figure out why.  There is random bolded source code in most of the files (all?), including those that don't give me any trouble.  There are some weird symbols in this link, but they exist in other files that are fine.  Hmmm...maybe not so fine.  I'm now deliberately trying files using keywords that I know are in there.  As opposed to looking for the outdated domain names like before.
It would really help if someone could give me a list of "bad" symbols or something.  And what does the bolded text mean?  And yes this is a BUG on Dreamweaver's part.  The files open just fine and they display fine in Firefox.  I can use the "find all" function when doing a sitewide search, even the "bad" files will be listed correctly, and then open the files manually.  If the "bad" file is open, I can search within it no problem.  The only thing I can't do is a sitewide (or selected files) search on files that are not open.  The "bad" ones will cause Dreamweaver to freeze as they automatically open.
So yes, I've found a workaround, but that doesn't mean there isn't a bug and that I don't want it fixed.  And the website I'm updating is really old with a lot of the work done in 1999.  It's for a nonprofit, it's very very important to keep the pages mostly as is, and I'm taking over from someone who recently passed away.  I am revamping things considerably, but, aside from fixing outdated links, I need to work with what's there and keep a "legacy" version.  I'm porting the info to a blog format but it will take months.  (And yes, this particular link is not important but it's the example I have to work with.)
The bad section of code is:
    <LI><B><I>UTNE Reader's Y2K Guide</I></B><BR>
    <UL> <A HREF="http://www.utne.com/bY2k.tmpl$search?db=dArticle.db&eqheadlinedata=Y2K%20Citizen%27s%20Act ion%20Guide">http://www.utne.com/bY2k.tmpl$search?db=dArticle.db&eqheadlinedata=Y2K%20Citizen%27s%20Act ion%20Guide</A></UL>
I'm hoping that doesn't break anything and that it comes out okay.  You can see the page on the website here: http://ehnca.org/www/ehnlinx/y.htm
There are dollar signs elsewhere that seem to be okay but I'm not sure.  That seems to be the only weirdness I can find.
Any comments?  Are dollar signs (in links, not in text) bad?  I tried another file and found only one dollar sign in it in a link.  I removed it, saved and closed the file, and did a search on it.  And it froze.  So if dollar signs are bad, then they aren't the only things.
    Help!
    Thanks.

  • MBP freeze when no graphic activity

My model is MacBook Pro with retina display, 13-inch, purchased on late 2013. Recently updated to OS X Yosemite 10.10.2.
Everything worked just fine until two days ago, when I was surfing the web, the computer froze. I can't move the mouse and type anything. I had to shut it down by press the power button. Then I restarted it, it froze again shortly after I logged in.
I tried the safe mode and reseted the PRAM, didn't work. Online diagnostic, memory test and disk test reported no hardware fault. I then erase the whole disk and reinstall OS X for twice, same problem still exist. Computer always froze shortly after login.
I accidentally find something interesting for this problem. As long as I keep moving the mouse or play a video, the computer will not get frozen. I further found that as long as there is some graphic activity on the screen, the computer will keep running, once there is no graphic activity for about 5 seconds, the computer freeze immediately.  (I tried keep typing something by keyboard, but it didn't prevent the computer from getting frozen).
Do you guys have any idea about this? Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I have the same problem. When no external monitor/TV is used, no issues ever. When using HDMI-DVI and using HDMI as sound output, freezes every 15-45 mins. When using just video, no audio, freezes every 30-90 mins.
When I called apple support, they said no known issues. I ran the low level Apple hardware diagnostics (ASD 3S138) OS and EFI, and my mac passed every single test. (DVI port is not listed on the diagnostic)
Everything is up to date, and my MBP is was purchased in August (3 months old).
My buddy has a MBP 13" from a year ago, before they added the capability to output sound through DVI-HDMI, and he has never had an issue.
This seems to be a hardware issue, and only seems to be happening on the 13" MBP with the new DVI out that allows sound that was released mid 2010.
