MBP is lagging.. Help

Could someone please help me out.
All of a sudden my mac is responding very slowly. From microsoft word, to safari, to other apps. Everything takes far longer to get going then normal.
Is there anything I can do, or something I should check.
Thanks

How much RAM have you got? How full is your hard drive? Check your pageouts under the "memory" tab in your Activity Monitor. Also, check your CPU usage in there to see if anything is hogging CPU power.

It's not an Apple issue and Apple has nothing to do with it.
The only way to buy an iPhone officially refurbished by Apple is to buy it from an Apple store or via Apple's website.
Refurbished iPhones sold via other retailers are not refurbished by Apple.
Sounds like Wireless Wave did all they could... they refunded your money.
Your only issue is with them.  Stop getting all worked up over it.

when i press shut down, my mid 2010 mbp restarts, please help!

OK, that eliminates a sticking power button, which would have been a possibility if you were using that button to bring up the Shut Down option.
Does this problem occur when you're running on battery power, on AC power, or both?
In System Preferences > Energy Saver > Power Adapter tab, do you have "Start up automatically after a power failure" checked? If you do, uncheck it, quit System Prefs, and see whether the problem persists. Post back with results.
Oh, and since you say this also happens when you select "Sleep" — does it happen when you close the display to put the machine to sleep, or only when you select the "Sleep" command from the Apple menu?

  • Question about Windows 7 on MBP! Please help! :(

Hey everyone, thanks for taking the time to check out my problem. Basically, I'm getting a MBP soonish (yes, I'll be waiting for the coming update). I'm a student (17 years old), and have used Windows my entire life - so on my MBP I definitely won't be using the Mac OS, I just can't be bothered adapting myself to an entire new OS. Anyway, here are my questions:
    1) If I solely use Windows 7, is it still possible to alter some of the physical options of the MBP? (e.g. the trackpad, touch sensetive or pressing to click, two finger click = right click or not, and so on).
    2) Will the trackpad gestures still work, even though I will be using Windows 7?
    3) I am aware that Apple products sometimes get Firmware updates. Will a popup still appear if I am using Windows 7? If not, where can I see/obtain the Firmware update?
    4) I'm not very tech savvy about Mac OS, but, when I get my MBP and the IT guy installs Windows 7, will the Mac OS still be 'on' the laptop? Or will it ONLY be Windows 7? Should I bother about having the Mac OS on it, even though I will never use it?
Thanks so much for your help everyone! I really really appreciate it.
    Regards,
    Brad.

What you're essentially looking to do is replace the engine of a Ferrari with a diesel lawn tractor engine (nothing against diesels, the new ones are excellent). Windows is slow and clunky and always gets in your way with constant interruptions and maintenance that always has to be done. I'm a student too (20 yrs old) and there is absolutely only one reason to run Windows and that is for games. Everything else can be accomplished much more easily under Mac OS X.
So the obvious question that I have is... why would you want to run Windows when you pay a small premium for the Mac hardware? You've already said you don't want to be bothered to adapt yourself to anything new and you think that you're not "tech savvy" enough to switch. In reality, you are the perfect person to switch from Windows to OS X. My girlfriend was just like you. Didn't initially have any interest in changing platforms, and wasn't that tech savvy (but wasn't a luddite either, for sure). I convinced her to get a Mac largely with the premise that Windows could be installed if she didn't like OS X. And she loved the hardware. So she got the Macbook, first night, and played around with it a bit. I came over the next day to install Windows and she told me she had no need for it and didn't want it at all. She has never used Windows at all since then. It took her one night to "adapt" herself to OS X and she said herself that she's more productive and happier using a computer since switching. And I know dozens more people exactly like this. Not only will you be the cool kid running OS X instead of clunky old Windows, you'll be more productive and happier too. How can you lose?
Anyway, if you have a specific app to run in Windows you can use Boot Camp. Boot Camp installs Windoze directly onto a separate partition on the hard drive. You can then use the Alt (Option) key to toggle between 'Doze and OS X at startup. Windows will run at full native speed, and will use the dedicated graphics chip in the MBP (if you get a 15/17" model that has one). Windows will use more power and generate more heat than OS X. As a result, battery life on Windows is considerably less than OS X (talking 3-4 hours compared to 5-6, probably).
If you do decide to go ahead with Windoze only (for some insane reason) then you will need to keep OS X around if you ever want firmware updates. Windows will never remind you of them, so you'll want to keep an eye on Software Update in OS X every month or so. The trackpad gestures will not work in Windows because Windows doesn't have trackpad gestures like OS X does. OS X is somewhere in the range of 6-8GB in size now, I think.
I say you should +at least+ give OS X a chance. Use it for a couple days. Ask questions if you have any. If you hate it after that, then go ahead and use Windows. But at least you'll know you tried something different. Learning new things (that are better than existing ways) is one of the best things we can do for ourselves. There is absolutely no reason not to be constantly learning and growing. To willingly shut yourself off from that is a shame, IMHO.

  • 10.8.3 rendered my MBP to lag and freeze (and other issues)

Okay. I have a Macbook Pro 9,1 (non-retina, Mid-2012).  After installing 10.8.3 through App Store, my computer begins to lag, and it would completely freeze in about 2 hours or so.  It starts with one application 'not responding' and it would spread to other applications.  When I try to Force Quit, that Force Quit window would freeze as well.  None of my keyboard, track pad etc would work. I had to force shut down by holding the Power button.
    I have done the following:
    Restart
Restart with 'Reopen Windows when logging back in' off
    SMC Reset
    PRAM Reset
    Hardware Test
    Disk Permission Repair
    Repair Disk
    Reinstall OS
    Reinstall using COMBO Update
fsck -fy in Single User Mode
I also checked the ~Library/Logs/Diagnostic Log and Uninstalled (with official uninstaller) EyeConnect (who crashed in the background for about 8 times during my 24hrs use of 10.8.3.)
While going through that list, I found issues in kernel_task taking up a lot of RAM (1+ GB in normal mode) (~400 GB in safe mode). The free RAM would also be miniscule just before the multiple freezes I had.
Booting through Safe mode, after about 2 minutes or so after boot, My RAM looks like this:
(No Free Space, Wired taking up 6GB...) The Animation would be very choppy  and I would be using Nvidia Graphics Card (GT-650M) instead of Intel Graphics 4000, when nothing graphic intensive is up.  Some Post floating in the Support Communities also mentioned how the VRAM for Intel Graphics 4000 shrunk from 512MB to 384MB. I think I have the same problem as well.
I've been to Apple Store/Genius Bar Twice: They basically said I should wipe the computer and hope for the best.  They also checked my Hardware, and it seems alright.
I thought of rolling back to 10.8.2 through Time Machine, but for some reasons, my HDD (through Thunderbolt) would not mount when booted from the recovery partition. It's there in Disk Utility, just won't mount. When accessing the HDD through USB 3.0, my most recent back-ups are not present, with the most recent update from March 2nd.  (March 3rd ~ March 18th Missing.)This shouldn't be the case, as I back up multiple times every day. I am also able to view the recent dates through Time Machine ('Enter Time Machine' from the menu bar).
I think the only thing left I could do would be Rolling back to March 2nd or Wiping my computer to factory settings.  Both I'm quite reluctant to do so, for obvious reasons.
Hypothesis on the issue: I think it's the RAM management gone wrong, causing the computer to lag+freeze so much.  I predict the wipe won't help much.  But we won't know what will happen unless we do it, I guess...
Did I mention about the sleep problems I had before 10.8.3? I'll skip those since it's not fatal, but they're not resolved in 10.8.3 as well. I installed 10.8.3 hoping to solve those problems, only to get even more problems Help Please? Thanks!

  • WD Elements External Hard drive wont detect on my MBP anymore. HELP!!

I was desperate to transfer my files from my WD external drive to my MBP but to no avail. So I searched online and found MacFuse and NTFS-3G. So I installed them both and after that, my WD Elements wont show anymore. It was working before prior to installing MacFuse & NTFS-3G. So I tried to remove them both but still the same problem. It wont detect my WD external drive anymore. The light on my WD drive is lighted up as usual but can't be found on Finder. I also tried to remove the WD external drive from my MBP and it recognises that my WD is there! Its says did not unmount correctly, something like that. I also tried to isolate the problem using another computer, this time, Windows and it works well.
The Culprit of all this is when I install MacFue & NTFS-3G
So I am stuck, any help would be highly appreciated.

Remove MacFuse and NTFS3G. remove them correctly, get the directions from the vendor(s). Don't put it back
Do you have any backups or are you winging it?

  • Does your MBP studder?  Help.

I just got my 2GHz MacBook Pro. Yay! But something concerns me.
Ever since I turned it on nearly two hours ago, I notice that when I move windows, use a scrollbar in a browser, even typing in iChat... There's bigtime lag. Like every half second there's a 1/4-second lag where the system then has to "catch up." Like it's under massive load - but it's not. Top reveals that it's not. Sometimes it's not the case, but is maybe 90% of the time.
I wondered if it was a power management, CPU sleeping thing but I can't seem to affect it with settings. But here- just now, for instance. I am typing in this window in Safari and I type ahead of the page - it studders and cathes up, but iChat just bounced its icon (someone pm'ed me) and for a second or two typing was glass smooth. It's like, if there IS load, then the system is smooth.
Is this a power management issue? I should take a movie of it and show you folks. If this isn't resolvable, I'll definitely have to return the unit.
    Help anyone? Thanks.
    blakespot

On my Intel based iMac, I made the mistake of using the Migration Assistant to copy data over to my new machine. Even though I did not ask it copy applications, it still copied some apps over. I wound up with a new machine running a bunch of stuff under Rosseta emulation and it was dog slow. I reloaded the OS and copied the data I wanted manually and life is good now. I'm not sure if this is your situation, but I thought I would mention it.

  • Play back is jumpy and lags, help

I have a total of about 4 hours of video I'll be making, and on my timeline I've nearly hit an hour. I lowered by playback settings to Standard that way is reduced the picture and played smoother. It made it work for a bit longer rather than lagging immediately.
The problem is the video, the video lags while playing and then eventually freezes on a frame but the audio continues. This obviously is annoying, but also making is difficult to edit. Are there setting somewhere I can lower the performance that will assist here? If I'm lagging at an hour its going to be impossible at 4 hours.
If I exported to quicktime and imported it again, would it lower the quality? I'm willing to work around it...maybe exporting a half hour at a time. Any idea? I lost all my data once and I don't want to "test" anything for fear of losing it all.
    Thanks

Too many audio clips, or overlapping audio clips, can cause the stuttering problem. Varies from computer to computer and project to project. I know of no lower quality resolution settings other than the Standard that you are using. You can toggle between small screen view and full screen view, and that sometimes can shake it loose temporarily. Also, unchecking the preference to center the playhead on playback can sometimes help. Make sure that your boot drive has at least 20GB of free space. If you can remove some of the overlaps while editing, and then put them back later, that might help. Or don't add all of your audio until you have finished editing the video.
Exporting to Full Quality Quicktime and importing again will not cause any loss of quality (at least that I can see). But it will limit editing if you do that with the whole movie. With longer movies I handle that by editing separate segments in separate iMovie projects, and then bring the segments back in to your control project as Full Quality Quicktime Movies. That limits the number of audio tracks and eliminates overlapping.
You also can export all or portions of your audio track as an .aiff file, using the Expert Settings. That will merge the clips thus limiting the number of audio clips and overlaps.
One other point: You will not be able to fit a four hour project onto a standard 2 hour DVD. You will need to use a dual layer disk or split your movie between two disks. Check your hardware profile to verify that your burner can burn dual layer disks.
Perhaps others will have additional suggestions.

  • MBP is lagging big time due to "Window Server" using 100% processing....

Lately my MBP has been momentarily lagging to the point where it stalls for more than 15 minutes and I have to force shutdown. The fans turn on as the MBP heats up. My only apps opened are iTunes, Firefox, Netnewswire and Mail at the time so I don't think its taking up most of my 4GB ram? Itunes is active playing songs.
I installed iStat Nano Dashboard a year ago and I decided today to check to see which app is taking up most of the processor upon this lag. I noticed it says "Window Server" is taking up 100% of my processing power. What is Window Server? I don't have my Parallels application on so I don't assume it means "Windows" as its "Window", so could it mean something related to Mac Os X?

It's not due ot running Windows OS. It's always running on my Macs but at low levels--1 to 5 percent--and I have no virtualization set up. I googled "windowserver mac process" (note I left out the space) and found this "definition" in another forum:
The WindowServer does exactly what the name suggests: it acts as a server process to composite/draw windows onto the screen. It deals with taking the bitmap of each window and drawing it to the correct location on screen (as an OpenGL texture these days), layering the windows correctly and compositing them where there are translucent areas (again all done in OpenGL these days). It also handles the double buffering of windows backing stores allowing the updates to the window content to be smooth and flicker free.
    (from http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=300096)
One poster suggested it came from having Dashboard running, but the poster I quoted said it is not.
From what I can determine, your seeing high windowserver activity could be due to having too much stuff on your desktop. The system sees each icon as a potential new window and allocates resources to it. Too many desktop items have always slowed the Mac OS and, at some point upward of 250, can crash the system.
If your desktop have a lot of icons having about corral them into folders. If you have 100 items on the desktop and put them into six folders, the count dropped to six.
In case it is Dashboard, consider turning it off when not in use. It uses a lot of other background resources. I use the widget DashQuit to turn off Dashboard once I have the info I need. Remember, a lot of widgets have to remain active because the constantly "phone home" to update the info they display. They will eat cycles.

  • Dual monitor has captured control of MBP, I need HELP!

I attached a Sony external monitor successfully this morning. I was ok with configuring and opted to run with the "mirroring" function ticked. But I accidentally unticked it and now the primary screen with the toolbar and dock, etc shows on the Sony monitor but the MBP screen just shows my wallpaper. The cursor only shows on the MBP screen, I cannot get it to show on the 2nd monitor, so I have no means of opening my System preferences, or of using any of my apps on the MBP. Can anybody help me here? Thanks, Patchgirl

    Welcome to Apple Discussions,
You have to move your cursor either full right across the screen or full left. If you move your mouse far enough it will show up on the other display.
You can change the arrangement of the displays and which display gets the dock in the Display preferences where you turned off mirrored mode.
You can get to your system preferences by pressing Shift + Command (the little clover) + A on the keyboard. This opens the Applications folder (only works when in the Finder so quit any other programs that might be running by pressing Command + Q). System Preferences will be down at the bottom of the list.
    Hope that helps.

  • MBP slow/freezing HELP!

    Hello guys!
    I have this MBP 13'' Mac OS X 10.7.5 running a 2.4GHz i5, 4GB RAMs and 500GB storage.
The problem started yesterday when I was typing on Word and I copy pasted something from the net (chrome browser) then it froze.
I waited for around 5minutes and still frozen with the spinning wheel, then I decided to turn it off by pressing power for 10 seconds restarted my
MBP then now it running so slow on start-up and apps are very slow to open like around 5 minutes. Every action that I try to do like clicking on the
apple in the upper left it freezes showing a spinning wheel and it will take time to show the drop down options.
I checked disk utility and it said that HD is ok, done verify/permission verify and repair.
I checked the activity monitor noting the ram/CPU usage and its normal it even tells that 2GB of ram is not use.
It shows not responding in the activity monitor if you open an app for around 5mins then it opens or it will crash.
I already done the 2 kinds of reset and did not work.
BUT it opens normally in Safe mode.
    Please help. thanks!

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off merely by the seeming complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can read it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
    4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:
PATH=/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/sbin:/usr/libexec;clear;cd;p=(Software Hardware Memory Diagnostics Power FireWire Thunderbolt USB Fonts SerialATA 4 1000 25 5120 KiB/s 1024 85 \\b%% 20480 1 MB/s Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press thereturn key.
    9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press returnthree times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report the results. No harm will be done.
    12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
    14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

  • Monitor to connect to MBP 2010? HELP PLEASE!

I have a 15' MBP 2010. I use it for work all day. It's becoming annoying because it's too small for me and I need a larger monitor to connect to it. Preferably a 24inch monitor.
So I purchased a 24inch monitor from Amazon.ca, but the monitor doesn't display text all the well. It's not super crisp and doesn't go very bright. Here's the one I bought: http://www.amazon.ca/Viewsonic-VX245...bs_677246011_4 (I have played around with it and still can't get the text to become crisp, images are fine, just the text *****)
So I'm going to return that one and get another 24inch from Amazon.ca (has to be from Amazon.ca since I have a gift card for them). I would like to keep the price around $200-$250 or so.
What 24inch LED monitor do you guys suggest I get from Amazon.ca to hook up to my MBP?
Some other important questions on my mind:
    - Is it best to connect by mini display port to HDMI or mini display port to DVI?
    - What brand is best?
    - Should I go with a IPS panel?
    What I need:
    - ability to make the screen very bright, so easy on eyes during day light
    - crisp text, easy to read for my work all day
Here are the best selling monitors on Amazon:
Here are the monitors I've been looking at:
    - http://www.amazon.ca/ASUS-VH238H-23-...bs_677246011_2
    - http://www.amazon.ca/Inch-Class-Pane...1873807&sr=1-2
I really apppreciate your help in advance

Googling shows that a lockdown folder is only avaialbe for jailbrokem iOS Devices. Jailbreaking voids the Apple warranty and you will not get any help from Apple including from the Apple forum.

  • 10.6.7 update has slowed my 2010 MBP drastically. Help!

I recently updated my 2010 MBP, 2.4 GHz, 4GB RAM to 10.6.7 and since I installed the update the performance has dropped massively. Upon booting it takes 7 minutes from when the deskptop appears for the finder and the dock to become available. The only piece of advice I could find on this was to repair permissions which I've done twice to no avail.
Any ideas? Do I need to reinstall OS X from the CD or can I revert back to 10.6.6 some way? Will I need to back-up my hardrive first?
    Cheers!

    William,
I booted in safe mode and got a 7.5 minute delay from when the login screen apeared until I was able to type in my password. As with the normal start-up (I am the only user therefore there is normally no login screen) I could move the mouse pointer but not click on anything.

  • Can't get sound to tv from MBP. PLEASE HELP.

I am having trouble getting sound to the tv from my MBP. I tried it on two televisions, a sharp and an LG. The only way I could get sound was through a stereo receiver on the sharp, and that took some doing.... So, I tried on the tv I mainly watch - and no sound. Is there possibly a setting within the tv, or should sound be automatic once i connect the rca into the headphone port on MBP.
The tv has the hdmi for video, and ports for audio, I plugged the white and yellow. I know it is probably something really simple - but I have tried all that I know to do. Thanks in advance....

You need an adapter. Mini DisplayPort can not output audio.
Mini Displayport Male and Toslink Audio/USB Male to HDMI Female Adapter
    http://www.cablematters.com/pc-56-26-mini-displayport-male-and-toslink-audiousb- male-to-hdmi-female-adapter.aspx
Then you need another HDMI to HDMI cable to connect this adapter to TV
