Mdt-2012-applying-unattendxml-with-dismexe-is-extremely-slow

Hello,
The image is completing successfully but it takes forever during the applying unattend.xml with dism.exe stage.
Takes well over ½ or so just for that part. It’s not a fat image just windows.
I redid my task sequence but no change. It used to be fast but now it seems like it hanging during the stage.
Any ideas?
Thanks in advance

Yup, looks like there are a lot of drivers being added in. Are some duplicates?
Also, if you have a lot of *.msu packages added into the MDT console, I would remove them.

• Anyone having trouble with computer running extremely slow with the color wheel continuously spinning.?

Updated with Yosemite and think that's when my problems started with my IMac being very slow. The color wheel keeps popping up and spinning not allowing me to move forward on typing or moving between websites etc. Extremely slow and never had this problem before Yosemite. Any real answers to this out there? I was on the phone with apple support for two and a half hours the other day and it's not made any difference in what the tech had me do to resolve this issue.

1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
The test works on OS X 10.7 ("Lion") and later. I don't recommend running it on older versions of OS X. It will do no harm, but it won't do much good either.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of it have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message. See, for example, this discussion.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
5. Try to test under conditions that reproduce the problem, as far as possible. For example, if the computer is sometimes, but not always, slow, run the test during a slowdown.
You may have started up in "safe" mode. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, a series of lines will appear in the Terminal window like this:
[Process started]
Part 1 of 8 done at … sec
Part 8 of 8 done at … sec
The test results are on the Clipboard.
Please close this window.
[Process completed]
The intervals between parts won't be exactly equal, but they give a rough indication of progress. The total number of parts may be different from what's shown here.
Wait for the final message "Process completed" to appear. If you don't see it within about ten minutes, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, press the key combination control-C or command-period to stop it and go to the next step. You'll have incomplete results, but still something.
12. When the test is complete, or if you stopped it because it was taking too long, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I may not agree with them.

• Pages with JavaScript open extremely slow IE 10/Win 8

Few weeks ago, started noticing some pages opening extremely slow. Top 2 examples are nbcnews.com and oregonlive.com, with the commonality between the 2, lots of scripting (javascript). The sites don't allow me to scroll right away, takes about 20 seconds
before that's available. The content is slowly loading, takes about 2 minutes to fully load. I am noticing a loading wheel next to the mouse pointer that is going nuts, appearing to process a large amount of info.
I went through lots of different troubleshooting steps; below are some of the things I tried:
- Reset IE/clear cache/ temp files
- Ran disk optimization
- Ran Full antivirus scan, with computer coming up clean
- Logging in under another user
- Compatibility mode
- Trying the sites on another windows 8/ IE 10 computer on the same network-works just fine
- Installing chrome, same problem
- disabling scripts on pages from internet options, the sites load quick, but half of the content is missing.
The only thing I've done that seemed to have fixed the issue temporary is uninstalling and re-installing a cumulative update that MS released last month. The sites were loading quickly right of the bat, after the update was re-installed. Later though, it
ended up getting worse again. Also, I compared the results from the metric at (https://www.webkit.org/perf/sunspider/sunspider.html) and on the troubled computer, results show Total
of 575ms response time, while on another computer, it's 120ms response time.
Please advise if there is anything else I can (besides resetting the OS) to resolve the issue. Thanks!

Please advise if there is anything else I can (besides resetting the OS) to resolve the issue. Thanks!
Use the Developer Tools to find out where your delay is. FWIW the NBC one was noticeably slower opening than the other.

• MDT 2012 - applying unattend.xml with dism.exe is extremely slow

Hello,
The image is completing successfully but it takes forever during the applying unattend.xml with dism.exe stage.
Takes well over ½ or so just for that part. It’s not a fat image just windows.
I redid my task sequence but no change. It used to be fast but now it seems like it hanging during the stage.
Any ideas?
Thanks in advance

One of the things that DISM does is to apply all the device drivers you specify. Please check the selection profile you have used for the Inject Drivers step and while you are at it check also for the Packages. By default it is set to everything,
if you do as I do and select specific device drivers make sure the selection profile is set to what ever you need or set to nothing if you set the MDT variables DeviceDriversxxx specifically.
Thanks for the reply. I have all of my selection profiles selecting only the drivers for each computer.
This all started after I added the latest Lenovo laptop with the Haswell processors.
I will keep looking.
Thanks

• Airport Extreme extended with Airport Express - extremely slow

I know this is not new. I have seen many discussions on this subject but no real answer.
My setup: ADSL modem connected to a AEBS (square, N compatible). Yesterday I got an older Airport Express (draft N) and extended the WiFi netowork.
I understand that this extension will reduce the speed but I didnt expect it to be that slow:
Download speeds:
- cable connection to the AEBS: >10 Mb/s
- wireless connection near the AEBS: 9.5 Mb/s
- wireless connection near the Airport Express: 0.2 Mb/s !!!
In the Airport Utility the Airport Express connection shows as GOOD.
Is it normal? Should I try to change configuration, channels, anything to improve this?
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Tonden

From my experience of setting up the Airport WiFi for family members and friends, I have learnt the following :-
1. Airport Express is not as good as Airport Extreme, for being as extender, the difference can be quite a lot.
2. There is always a dead cornor (bad reception) in a house
3. Even moving the Airport Extreme / AE a few inches, the performance can be improved quite significant
4. If possible, always choose 5G 802.11n than 2.4G, unless there are many thick walls.
My suggestion will be as follows :
1. Moving out the AEBS out of a closet, is a good idea
2. Always try to locate the AEBS in the centre of a area, instead of the two sides
3. Try to test the AEBS without an extender, and find the best location area (don't place on the floor, neither above 6 feet height)
4. After finding a best location, set the extender closer to the AEBS, and then moving apart from it (check the performance after every move), it is better that both devices can face each other.
5. I can't tell you the reason, and some people may not agree with me, the new 2013 Airport Exteme performance is better and may be is a good idea to replace your Airport Express, and use it to connect with your router, and old AEBS as an extender
6. Some Powerlinks (in case you can't use a wired ethernet connection between the two devices) work and some don't work with Apple Airport products, therefore, if possible, have an option to return them to the shop if they do not match
Good luck

• Mail sync with gmail is extremely slow

I have a mail.app installation that's part of 10.7 and it holds three accounts, all of which are hosted by google. Two do exactly what you might hope - i.e. turn the spinner for a few seconds once mail.app starts and then be fine; but the other one...
(a) Never stops the spinner and
(b) Periodically sends data at approx 1Mbit/sec for four or five minutes.
Aside from the fact that it's clearly broken, those of us who have to pay for our bandwidth are not amused by this kind of behaviour. I've spent the morning nuking a large quantity of mail from both sides (down to 2000 messages and 340mb) and had hoped that would call an end to the war between them but to no avail.
Clearly there's a sync problem - how do I blow away the obviously broken internal database thing? What do I need to do?
Cheers,
Dave

A RESETLOGS doesn't clear the entries.
You can CREATE CONTROLFILE and then RESYNC. However, you will "lose" information about RMAN BackupSets as well -- unless you re "catalog" them with the "CATALOG" c ommand before you RESYNC.

• Help: External SATA with ZFS raidz2 extremely slow, freezes system

Hello,
I need some help with the following configuration:
Dell 850 with Intel D940 (3.2 ghz dual core), 1 gig RAM, 2 80 gig SATA drives
Norco DS-1220 external SATA enclosure
(http://www.norcotek.com/item_detail.php?categoryid=12&modelno=ds1220)
Sil3124 4-port SATA card

8 seagate 7200.10 500 gb sata2 drives
I'm using Solaris 10 x86 u3. It sees the sata card at c3 and the 8 disks as:
/dev/rdsk/c3t2d0p0 /dev/rdsk/c3t545d0p0 /dev/rdsk/c3t608d0p0

/dev/rdsk/c3t544d0p0 /dev/rdsk/c3t577d0p0
I created a raidz2 pool with all 8 drives. It appeared to work OK:

As a quick and dirty test, I did:

The drive with 100 moves between sd1 to sd6 (i think sd7 and sd8 too, but not positive). Sometimes both %w and %b report 100. Also, occasionally, two drives will both report 100. These stay at 100 for 30 seconds or longer, followed by a flurry of data, and then another drive reports 100.
Here's another example:

Anyone have any ideas what could be causing this? Or if this is a known SATA problem? Or a known problem with the Sil3214 cards or the Sil port multipliers?
Thanks,
Greg

I was told the port multiplier code in the Solaris and OpenSolaris systems is not production ready. It is a known bug and is being worked on, but no ETA. I was given the impression that it was a low priority issue.
After struggling with this for several days I had to give up using Solaris for this project and had to migrate to Linux. In my case, I had to use CentOS or Red Hat ES due to binary drivers from Silicon Image as the open source Sil3124 drivers in Linux also had problems with port multipliers (slightly different symptoms than Solaris). Even with the binary drivers from the vendor, I am still seeing port multipliers drop all 5 drives at seemingly random times.
Moral of the story: Don't use port multipliers in production environments or anywhere that you value your data. At least, not the Silicon Image 3726 port multipliers. They'll just give you more headaches than they are worth.
Had I the chance to do it over, I would not have purchased the NorcoTek (Norco) DS-1220 enclosure; I would have done something with SCSI or with direct channels to all drives and no port multipliers. One day they'll probably be OK.
I had wanted to use raidz2 for my array. When I switched to Linux I used raid6 (double parity, similar to raidz2), but with the port multipliers dropping 5 drives at a time, I had to reconfigure to raid 1+0. Nice performance, but I'm really annoyed at the loss of capacity. My 5 tb array is now 3 tb.

• Ipad mini with retina wifi extremely slow/dead after ios 8 update

Just updated my devices to iOS 8. Im having no issues with the Iphone 5s wifi works perfectly fine. But with the Ipad Mini w/ Retina I can't get any wifi. Its connected, I've reset the wifi & router. But my mini keeps saying there isnt any internet connection. Anyone else have this issue?

After updating my iPhone 4s that worked absolutely fine, i set about my iPAD 2,
took forever for the request made icon change to down loading, then installing. Once completed i had severe connection issues, Safari not finding servers, iOS telling me my password was incorrect so real problems, i could not even populate the BBC news app it just stuck as did Ebay, Amazon, Maplin etc Apps...
Not one to panic but terrified because i'm off on holiday for a week to Spain on Saturday, i use my iPad to remote my PC and remote assistance to systems i fit, and i have several hundred pages in Notes which i use as 'sticky's'.so do i need this like a hole in the head?
tried several reboots, eventually last resort before defaulting and clearing it out, and restoring, fearing loosing those precious notes (not certain they were all backed up), I reset my network settings (which wipes all stored login details for various sites, resets WiFi details etc),
To my Massive relief it cured all the connection problems i was having, so for some reason something must have corrupted.
you need to know what details you used on each site you use.
suggest you all try it
Other suggestion is you do need a lot of spare memory space, so park large files onto PC in alternative cloud storage, then delete from your device. You can restore deleted apps afik no are charged again, so delete those your not really using making sure you keep the data safe.
hope it helps

• MDT 2012 Win7 x64 capture fails - boot loop

Hi everyone,
I'm pretty new to MDT and having a problem capturing a Win7 x64 reference image.
It seems to start out fine doing the Sysprep and so on, but then it has to restart the computer and after that it goes into a boot loop. After this, I have been forced to format and reinstall Win7 on the computer. This picture shows what it loops through
in about 20 seconds - and it shows nothing else than what's on these pictures :)
www.jaded.dk/boot_loop.png
I have been Google'ing alot, but can't find any post with the same issue, since most other get an error msg which I dont.
Here is some info about the setup.
I'm deploying the task sequence locally using these commands:
net use * \\mdtserver\DeploymentShare$ /user:domain\username
cscript \\mdtserver\DeploymentShare$\Scripts\LiteTouch.wsf
Server running MDT 2012 U1 - Win server 2008 R2, 64 bit
The laptop on which i'm trying to capture the ref img is a HP Elitebook 8470p. It is fully patched with windows updates and I have installed a few apps like Office 2010, flash player, reader etc.
The "Rules" on my MDT Workbench is like this:
[Settings]
Priority=Default
Properties=MyCustomProperty
[Default]
OSInstall=Y
SkipCapture=NO
SkipAdminPassword=YES
SkipProductKey=YES
SkipComputerBackup=YES
SkipBitLocker=YES
SkipTimeZone=YES
SkipLocaleSelection=YES
InputLocale=0406:00000406
KeyboardLocale=0406:00000406
KeyboardLocalePE=0406:00000406
SystemLocale=0406:00000406
UILanguage=0406
UserLocale=0406:00000406
My task sequence looks like this:
www.jaded.dk/task_seq.png
I don't know where to find a log of the capture, to get a hint of what has gone wrong.
Hope you can help me out here :) And please let me know if you need more info.
Thanks
Morten

Thank you both for answering.

I didn't seem to have Windows Deployment Services installed on my server. I just installed it and added WinPE boot files as bootimage according to this guide: http://blogs.technet.com/b/manojnair/archive/2011/11/23/exploring-mdt-2012-beta-2-part-6-of-10-integrating-mdt-2012-beta-2-with-windows-deployment-services-wds.aspx
Is that correct?
Keep in mind that I don't use PXE at the moment, if that makes any difference :)
David:
I will try to add SLShareDynamicLogging. I set it like this - hope it's correct:
SLShareDynamicLogging =\\MDTSERVER\DeploymentShare$\Logs\%ComputerName%

• MDT 2012 Update 1 - Deployment - Auto Login won't Disable

Hello,
I am using MDT 2012 Update 1 with an almost vanilla Windows 8.1 and Windows 7 test box. I can deploy both images fine and get a success on my summary but both machines continue to auto login to the Administrator account. To my understanding, the Auto Login
should be shutoff via the LTIcleanup script. When I double check the script for the reg keys that are added/deleted I can confirm that this is happening but the images still continue to auto login to the admin account.
Anyone have any ideas?

Thought I would let those who are interested know. After speaking with Microsoft Premier Support they determined that you must have a password on the Administrator account. If you don't then something goofs up and causes the auto logon issues that I was
having.

• Very strange : Export from Organizer extremely slow

Today I came something strange while "exporting Files as New File" from the Organizer. I decided to report it, because the observation may point to a potential improvement.
In the Organizer (PSE V7), I went through File--> "Export as New File..." to export approximately 350 Jpeg Photo-Files (around 3 MBeach) to a USB Stick. I was knowing that writing to my USB stick was slow. But the Export Process was much slower than expected. It was ***extremely*** slow and after more than 1/2 hour, only 16% of the Photos had been exported. Also my PC (Windows XP Professional with SP3) was extremely slow in responding.
I therefore diced to kill the PSE Organizer.
Then I decided to 1) export the 350 Jpeg Files first to a Folder on my ***internal*** disk and then 2) to copy with Windows Explorer that Folder to my USB Stick. This was much, much more rapid.
From this experience, I get the impression that the "Export as new File" logic of PSE is doing something very vstrange and very inefficient ...something that could get probably improved.

I may not be having a snow leopard problem at all.
Going back to an old project in 1080i of an 8 minute length. the estimated time to render is about 50 minutes it says @20% of the way thru. Thats about 6x real time.
Maybe thats what I should expect. I was hoping for a significant speed increase in rendering times with the new OS. What is teh factor averaging for other people ?
I am rendering down to 720p multi pass 2320 kbit rate .MP4 in h.264
Maybe I have a settings problem in project properties in my other project.
I also got inspired and moved the render folders to a separate disk from the source files and put the caches on a 3rd drive. my I/O readings now are at 60 reads/sec.
Thanks for helping me work this issue out with you guys. Will keep you posted.

• Extremely slow Maverick's

Since in stalling Mavericks on my Early-2011 MacBook Pro I have had unbelievable trouble with it being extremely slow — sometime running fix disk permissions helps, but not for long.
I have created a new partition on both the SSD and HD, erased the partitions and reinstalled Mavericks on both. After that I reinstalled a limited number of the applications that I use regularly.
The same problem of a very sluggish system — to the point of being unusable — is the case for 10.9.3 installed on the partition on the SSD and the partition installed on the HD — nothing seems to help on either drive.
I have run the full suite of tests in TechTool Pro 7 several times and it has reported no problems.

That looks OK to me. It does look like Spotlight is indexing (mds_stores) that can cause some slowness, but it should disappear when the index is built. Click the icon to see if there is a progress bar for Spotlight.
Can you disconnect the FireWire disk to see if that has any effect?
It sounds like you have tried a clean install on each disk, is that correct? That would make me think it is hardware related. Are you near an Apple store?
I'd do some searching to see if anyone has had issues with multiple recovery partitions, 5 seems excessive :)
I think they are required for FaceTime & Findmymac, but it's unclear on how they interact (not mounted probably means they don't, but look anyway).

• MDT/WDS 2012 - Applying the install.wim file concurrently with the multicast download

Hi Folks.
I have a working MDT 2012 setup on Server 2012. Multicasting is all good and my images are deploying smoothly.
Looking though the "What's New" for WDS 2012 it mentions that "You can apply the install.wim file while it is being downloaded"
Does anybody have any idea on how to get this working with MDT? I can't find any info about this new feature anywhere.
PS. Should add that my Windows PE is built from the Windows ADK via MDT and I'm pushing out Win 7.
Cheers
