Measuring temperature Via Thermocouple and USB-6009?

Hi,
I am trying to perform temperature measurements using a k type thermocouple and the USB-6009 DAQ. I tried to use the Cont Acq Thermocouple Sample.vi from LabVIEW's example list, but unfortunately I don't know how to fit my DAQ and thermocouple in the vi code. I don't know how to create a thermocouple temperature measurement channel or how to get all the channels in the task, etc.
Any help is appreciated.
Thanks.

bilbeigg,
It should be noted that the USB-6009 is not well suited for thermocouple measurements.  It has 14 bits of precision with a minimum input range of +/-1V, which means it can only detect a voltage change as small as about 122 microvolts.  This is much too large a change to get a good temperature reading with most types of thermocouples.  Here is a discussion thread on the same topic (Note that the USB-6008 and 6009 are very similar):

  • Problems on measuring temperature using thermocouples connected to SCB-68 terminal block

I have problems on measuring temperature using thermocouples connected to SCB-68 terminal block. The thermocouples were connected to the differential channel 1 and a return path for the instrumentation amplifier bias currents and a 4 Hz low pass filter were both developed. But the readings were floating and jumped randomly between 0 and 200 Deg Cel abnormally. The CJC on the terminal block was disabled and a new one was developed by myself. However, the readings for the CJC were accurate and quite stable. So what is the reason for the floating of thermocouple readings? Did I miss anything that I need to do? Thanks.

Are your TCs floating or grounded? Basically, if your TCs are mounted to a metal test article and the object is grounded to earth, then, the TCs are grounded -- and very likely contaminated with ground loops. You will need to reference the TC inputs accordingly. These ground loops will cause the TC data readings to float - recall that TC readings are in the millivolt level. It does not take much of a ground loop to ruin a TC measurement.
Also, try this... first, set the filter to 10KHz and sample for a few seconds at 20 KHz (take 32768 data points). Now subtract the mean value from the trace and perform an FFT on the data. Look for the dominant frequency. Is it 60 Hz or some multiple? If yes, the likely cause is a ground reference problem.

  • External HDs not showing up on computer via firewire and usb

All external hds do not show up on the computer via firewire or usb. I must have perfomed some updates with my hardware plugged in. Does anybody know how to get this fixed?

Thought you could use this info about getting FireWire to work!
First, you should always Repair Permissions in Disk Utility before and after any update; I would do that now. If you installed your update with FireWire plugged in, your Mac may not recognize it anymore.
Try resetting your FireWire ports by disconnecting all FW devices, shut down your Mac and unplug it from AC power (wall socket) for 30 minutes. plug it back in and try FW.
If that did'nt work, download the combo update from this site (yours may be corrupt), not Software Update, disconnect all firewire + USB devices except keyboard + mouse, Repair Permissions, re-install update, Repair Permissions again + try. Yours is the 10.3.9 Combo update. Others reading, download the Combo that applies to your system.
If that still did'nt get it Zap the PRAM. While restarting Mac hold down the following key combo Command-Option-P-R. Keep holding those keys down till you hear the second start-up chime, then release.
For those of you with Macs that are not PowerBooks or iBooks, a bad internal battery can cause FireWire to not be recognized, so make sure it's good!
    Good Luck!
    Cheers!

  • Internet sharing via smartphone and USB

    Hi,
I would like to use my smartphone HTC S730 which has a flat fee 3G internet connection to act as modem for my MacBookPro. This way I don't need a seperate datacard for my laptop and, when using USB my smartphone's battery is charged too.
BUT, Leopard > system preferences > internet sharing doesn't show USB (or Bluetooth) as option(s) for sharing. I have to choose Airport, Ethernet or Firewire. My smartphone cannot connect via one of these three options. iCentre store in Amsterdam couldn't answer my question. Any suggestions?
    thanx,
    Sam van Buuren.

You're not going about it correctly. You want to use your smart phone as a modem. You need set up System Preferences>Network not to use internet sharing. Contact the manufacturer and/or your service provider. You may need a modem script.

  • Live Capture with a camera via firewire and usb audio interface

I am trying to do a live capture through Final Cut 7.
I want the video feed through the firewire from my HVX200 and the audio feed from a 4 channel usb audio interface (Alesis iO4).
When I have both audio and video input coming in from the HVX200, the live capture works fine.
However, when I change the audio input so that it is coming from the usb audio interface, final cut has an error message saying "Video is not available."
During the preview, I see the video clearly and am getting levels from the iO4.
But when I try to capture, I get the error message.
Is it a processor issue (I've attached my specs below) with problems handling 2 separate inputs?
I'm not quite sure what the problem is.
    Any input is greatly appreciated.

  • USB-6009 Temperature Acquisition

    Hi All
I seem to have some brain fade today. I need to use the USB-6009 to with a J type thermocouple. When I hook it up the temperature is not correct and widely varies. I am getting reading from 0 to 60 C at room temperature. I need to incorporate this into another circuit for testing. I assume that I am overlooking the simple and obvious. I have tried using a DAQ Assistant and a DAQmx. Any help will be appreciated.
    Thanks
    Gerald

    Hello Gerald,
You don't have a brain fade! I recently got in a few usb-6009's and am seeing a similar response when trying to measure temperature with thermocouples.
I don't believe this is noise as much as resolution on the usb-6009. At this point I have added resistors to bring down noise but am seeing the same "waver" that you describe (although not quite as extreme). I am looking into building a signal amplifier or alternatively purchasing a  TAC80 thermocouple-to-analog converter for use with the usb-6009.
Have you had any progress with your issue?

As an electrical engineering student it is time you learned to read and interpret data sheets. You will spend much of your career doing that.  And none of your professors ever mentioned it, right?
Data sheets are the source of much of the information which is critical to the success (or failure) of your designs.  Of course none of your professors actually knows much about design either.

  • Cannot measure temperature

Im having troubles measuring temperature with thermocouples. When I measure the temperature of the air or places which are not with potential the card works well. But if I want to measure temperature for example in a transistor that is under a voltage of 13 volts the card shows wrong readings. If I´m not mistaken this card has an input voltage range of +/- 15 volts, so the voltage in the transistor is within the input voltage range.
I read in the manual that you can configure the input voltage for +-.625mv, +- 1.25, +- 2.5, +- 3.75, +- 7.5, +- 15 volts, but I cannot find the tool or the way to do this.
If the common mode voltage is < 2,5 volts I can measure the temperature, but if its bigger I get wrong readings from the card.
I already post this question in another forum, but nobody answered, I guess its more a software question! Im using the plug and play driver for the 435x devices.
Do you have any suggestion of what should I modify to make it work? I attached my code.

    Hernar,
Thermocouples are made of electrically conductive wires.  If you connect them to an electrically energized point, you will measure a value which is determined by the voltage and impedance of the energized point as well as the thermocouple voltage and impedance.  Since the thermocouple voltages are usually quite small (mV), the voltage from the other circuit (your 13 V transistor) is likely to be much larger.
You need to use an electrically isolated thermocouple to measure the temperature of your energized transistor.  Or connect the thermocouple to the transistor through an electrically insulating, thermally conducting material such as the insulators used to mount power transistors to heatsinks.

  • USB-6009 device not found problem

    Hello all,
So my VI and USB-6009 have been working fine until recently.  I noticed the VI was not reading or graphing information from the analog input channel correctly.  My firmware is up to date, but I noticed a problem.  In Isdaq, it will recognize that the USB-6009 is connected, then when I run my VI and stop it, i check Isdaq for my device again, and it does not recognize any device.  I have to unplug the daq and replug it for Isdaq to recognize the usb-6009 again.  But each time I run my VI, it does not seem to collect any data, and it makes the device unrecognizable.  Do you know what the problem might be?  Attached is the VI I have been running in case you want to look at it.  Its been working fine until now.
btw, I am running Labview on a Mac OS X

    Hello Solis,
I would recommend making changes to the parallel tasks to use the error cluster to force the order of execution, since NI-DAQmx Base is not multi-thread safe (review NI-DAQmx Readme). Please verify if this alleviates the issue.

  • How do I run a J-type thermocouple to the usb-6363 DAQ and program labview to measure temperature?

I have a usb-6363 DAQ and a J-type non-contact thermocouple that I am looking to connect and measure temperature through. However, the DAQ does not have any T/C inputs, which is needed to measure in the thermocouple temperature. I am connecting the thermouple to an analog input (+/-) and I am not looking to buy an amplifier, converter or any other hardware. I believe there is a way to program labview to read in the voltages of the thermocouple and convert it into accurate temperature readings. Any help/ideas?

    Hello George,
This tutorial should step you through the basic process of configuring the device and connecting the thermocouple:
Tutorial: Connect Thermocouples to a Data Acquisition (DAQ) Device
http://www.ni.com/gettingstarted/setuphardware/dataacquisition/thermocouples.htm#Connecting a Thermocouple to Your Device
From there, there are a number of things you can do- I'd recommend taking a look at the LabVIEW shipping examples (Help>>Find Examples...) as well as the DAQmx getting started tutorials:
Getting Started with NI-DAQmx: Main Page
    http://www.ni.com/white-paper/5434/en
At first glance, the 6363 you're using should have enough resolution to acquire usable data from a thermocouple- if you attempt reading raw voltages be sure that the acquisition range is configured for +/- 0.1V, though.

    Tom L.

  • Can NI myDAQ ai0 and ai1 be connected directly with thermocouples to measure temperature???

    Hi,
I am trying to use myDAQ to realize both temperature measurement and digital output.
By reading this page I have learned that how I can create a task for temperature measurement using thermocouple with a certain NI device.
    http://www.ni.com/white-paper/14338/en/
What I found to be really interesting is that when I create a task for myDAQ temperature measurement using a thermocouple when my NI myDAQ is connected with my PC, two AI ports ai0 and ai1 both appears in the create task window!!
I never found any information from NI myDAQ manual that "AI0 and AI1" can be connected directly with a thermocouple to measure temperature without using additional conditioning system. But this window suggests that myDAQ can be used in this way, is it?
I am still trying to do it this way, and I'll post some results here again.
I would be really appreciate if anyone could confirm or disprove my guess. Thank  you.

  • USB 6009 thermocouple noise

    I'm using NI-DAQmx 7.5, Labview 7.0, and a USB-6009.
I'm trying to get a more accurate reading from my j-type thermocouple.  It is now distorted with noise and jumps rapidly +/- 20 degrees around room temp without any heat being applied.  When heat is applied, it climbs as it should but with the same variation.  I haven't moved to the labview side of it yet, I'm still trying to get a usable reading in MAX.  I have it wired as a differential input with a floating signal source.  I've installed 10k ohm resistors for bias current return as instructed.  Installing the resistors helped but still leaves me with the readings shown in the attached pic.  I've also tried grounding my USB 6009 with no results.  Please help. john
    Attachments:
    thermocouple reading.jpg ‏41 KB

    Hi John,
What you are running into is a problem with the actual voltage resolution of your USB-6009.  This device has 14-bits of resolution over a minimum range of +/- 1V.  That means that the voltage resolution is (1 - (-1))V / (2^14) = 2V / (16384) = 122uV.  While this is an excellent resolution for such a low cost USB device, you will still notice problems when trying to make a thermocouple measurement.  The reason for that is that Thermocouples make a very small output voltage (see image below).
Common thermocouple types have the following response:
K type: 41 microVolts per degree Celsius
J type: 56 microVolts per degree Celsius
T type: 52 microVolts per degree Celsius
There are a few options for ways to get around this limitation.
Good: You could read the signal in as a voltage and then manually convert that voltage into a temperature.  This would be the least accurate method, but it should allow you to average out your signal and then use the Convert Thermocouple Reading.vi to show the voltage as a temperature.
Better: If you want to keep using the USB-6009 to measure thermocouple, what you really need to do is first amplify your signal before you connect it with your device.  This should increase your resolution of the thermocouple allowing you to get more accurate temperature specs.  This will require some more complex programming to properly scale your measurements, but it will give you more accurate readings for relatively little cost.
Best: Opt for getting a USB device that is designed for taking temperature measurements such as the USB-9211A.  This device would give you a voltage resolution of 160mV/2^24 = 9.54 nV!  That's over 12500x the resolution of the USB-6009 that you currently have.
Hopefully the above information helps you better understand what is going on and why.  If you have any other questions feel free to post them here.
