MegaBook S270/MS-1013 PC3200 support?

Hi, (First Post)
I wonder if anybody knows anything about the MS-1013 and it's support for PC3200, as I have replaced the shipping RAM in my OEM MS-1013 with 2 sticks of KingMax 512MB PC3200, and it still runs at 133MHz - the original RAM was PC2700 and also only ran at PC2100 speeds. I know the Sempron (eww) supports PC3200, and the specs for the machine claim it does, so I'd like to know why, even with the latest MSI BIOS, 330(?) it runs slow. I've tried using A64 Tweaker to boost it up to 166 and 200MHz, but (presumably due to the onboard video not liking an on the fly change from the display corruption I get as it crashes) even with vastly increased timings and 2T, I've had no success. (actually, before I upgraded the BIOS, it wouldn't boot with the PC3200 in, so 330 was a good omen anyway)
If anybody has PC3200 or 2700 working at the correct speed in one of these or knows if MSI are planning on sorting out the BIOS or if there's something obvious I've missed, I'd like to know since I think the graphics performance would benefit significantly from the increased memory speed (not that it's exactly slow for an integrated solution as-is!)
p.s. Otherwise, I love this machine - it was better specced and cheaper than MSI-badged S270s in the UK beside the Sempron (which isn't exactly slow - in fact, it's faster than my Dothan 725), and I'm considering upgrading it to a Turion ML-37 when prices come down anyway :D
Overclocking has been fun with ClockGen (ICS951412 version works), but I'm not sure I'd use it for extended periods clocked up, since the cooling system in notebooks usually struggles enough as-is, IMHO.

I just got my MSI S270/1013 today.. Specs are Turion 64 MT-34, 1GB PC2700, 80GB, 8x DVD+RW, Wireless G+Bluetooth. So far its great.    I just ran CPU-Z on it, and I'm coming up with mine running at ~166mhz, or PC2700 speeds. I'll give you what my ram settings are so you can compare. (oh, btw, I haven't updated my bios, only because I just got it and everything seems to be working fine)

  • MSI Megabook S270: frustration! should I had got a centrino...?

I have a S270 since september and overall I can say that the experience had been positive... But for at least 2 months I've been hunted by a problem I have every reason to suspect is caused by the on Board ATI Radeon Xpress 200M. 1rst I've have had several inconstants BSOD caused by ati2dvag. I reported to MSI via mail, the person replied to several times and asked me the chipset my S270 had (by the way, it is the RS480 version).
I replied. Then he asked me if I could restore the system to the factory state (since I'm living in a country without local MSI notebooks assistance) to check if the problem persists. At that time I had work to do and I just couldn't format the computer but I did a couple of weeks after. I reported that the problem persisted (ussually when I open a large video file or anything video intensive... although the problem imediatly after the format and sstem restore is not noticeable, usually begin to get worse a couple of days after the format).
The person who had been very helpfull just stoped replying and I was left on my own...
After getting a dozen BSOD (the symptons are: I open a large video file or alike, everything freezes (infinte loop) except the mouse pointer, I begin to click everywhere and I hear a system BEEP and it BSODs) I decided to do everything it took to solve the problem and decided to download the ATI drivers on its website (against the advice I was given... but the driver I had on MSI website was as old as the one I had on the CD) and I was thrilled to know that the problem had gone!!
Now... about 2 weeks after I first installed Catalyst 5.11 I have been getting similar errors to the BSOD I was getting before... the difference is that this time theres no BSOD... the system would freeze, a beep is heard but the screen turns off and then on quickly and I would just know there had been a problem even though luckily it would not BSODs. I experienced it twice while using Google Earth (I supposed it is graphicaly intensive for it photo tiles) and the second time the screen frooze twice in short time space and after the second time the screen just turned of and  would have to manually restart the computer...
Also, since the begginning I have exxperienced another anomaly (but much rarer and without a clue about its symptons): I would be surfing the web as I do most of my computing time and the screen would just turn off a right after that a sequence of fullscreen colors would begin: fullscreen red... then fullscreen green then fullscreen blue... black... white... infinetly repeating... I can't ctrl-alt-del, I can't see the mouse... I can't do anything except manually restart... I also suspect this to be of anything related to the ATI chiptset....
Now... why had I toke this time to write this enormous post? Because I'm becoming very disapointed with this computer... cause primarily by thefrustration I feel regarding this ATI issue: I choosed this computer (I bought it from a german shop even though I'm living in Portugal) because it was one of the first to incorporate Turion 64s and more importantly, it didn't have a integrated cheap intel graphic card... now I feel like I should have know better and bought a "standard" Intel centrino system with a "standard" intel integrated graphic card... why? because for the past 3 months I've been suffering these issues and I don't see MSI making much effort to update drivers (or press ATI to do it) for the system (well, I'm also NOT being able to boot from a USB HDD and it is probably because of this obsolete and basic AMIBIOS... my old XP1500+ did everything I've been trying to do with this turion and just didn't let me down...)
Please... the few of you (specially MSI support) that had the time to read all this, please at least give me some technical guidance... some answers...

  • Where can I buy the Megabook M635 remote and Instant-On softwares

    Hello,
I'm about to purchase the North American version of the M635 laptop but it doesn't come with the remote or instant-on software.  Is there anywhere I can purchase the remote and Instant-on software??
    Thanks

they sell the MegaBook S270 online, but not the M series . maybe you could contact MSI USA, there might be a list of distributors on their website there you could look through. How to contact MSI.
or can anyone recommend any North American dealers that stock this notebook that btacular can try?

  • Does KT3 Ultra 2 support PC3200?

I cannot locate the manual for this mobd, but was wondering if anyone knows if the KT3 Ultra 2 board supports the Kingston 512MB PC3200 DDR RAM? or am I stuck with PC2700 memory?
My system is so unstable, locking up many times a day. The mobd. is a RMA replacement from MSI (due to secondary IDE problems). XP w/SP2 loaded fine, but PC hangs at bootup or usually within 30 minutes.
    Thanks.

I don't have the PC locally now, so I cannot check the power supply manufacturer information.
However, I can tell you that the power supply is brand new as is the case I just purchased. It may be an Austin 300W if my memory serves me right.
I have gone through this website (http://www.msicomputer.com/support/sup_tshoot.asp) and forum and found the most likely causes of system hangs appears to be:
    1. old BIOS
    2. CPU problems
    3. memory mismatch/bad
    - The motherboard just came in from MSI as an RMA replacement, so the BIOS is probably the latest (5.7). I will verify this weekend.
    - The CPU is newer, so it is not likely. Although, I can swap it  and try it out this weekend.
    - I know for a fact that the memory is from different manufacturers. I have 256MB and a 128MB PC2700 from different companies. I tested them one at a time, and they ran clean. It is possible that there is a conflict, that is why I began looking for replacement memory. At this time, PC2700 is more expensive and less available than equivalent PC3200, too. So, these are the reasons I am checking into the KT3 Ultra 2 support of PC3200 DDR memory. Thanks.

  • MSI S270 / 1013 bad flash situation? Help needed.

I updated my BIOS to the 1013_410 BIOS and completed successfully. It shut down after flash but when I power it on, the screen never comes on, no beeps, the DVDRW blinks a few times, HD spins, and fan spins. Not sure how to go about fixing this.
I tried to do a BIOS recovery method and followed the instructions here and created a bootable CD and also renamed the BIOS to AMIBOOT.ROM and pressing CTRL+Home after powering on my laptop but somehow it is not working. Does it work only with floppy drives? I laptop doesn't have a built-in floopy drive and I have been using the built-in DVDRW as a boot device.
Is there a way to reset the CMOS? Any other way to recover the BIOS? Please help.

Yes, that was the recipe given to me in this forum.- Only I considered too risky to try, and reinstalled Floppy Disk.  8)

  • KT3 Ultra 2 -C motherboards pc3200 ram support ?

Hi, I'm using Kt3 Ultra 2-C motherboard and pc2700 ram added on it. I think to add pc 3200 ram.  Can I use side by side both ram. Thanks.

You can, but if you find problems, you'll know where they come from. BTW the faster memory will degrade to slower mem. speed. Also, if you'r running a 333FSB CPU. memories will run at that max.speed.

  • S270 x64 Driver (MS-6833 or MS-6855)

Ok, I just got done installing Windows XP Professional x64 Edition on my S270.  All the drivers worked except the 4-1 Ricoh flash drive bay and the WiFi drivers. I downloaded the driver pack from the MSI website for x64 support. I still can't find the 4-1 Flash Drive Bay drivers, but hopefully someone will make some soon. In order to get the Wireless Networking to function, you need a different set of drivers since the MSI ones they listed for x64 DON'T WORK. Here is the link to the site with the WORKING wifi drivers. This applies for both the MS-6833 and MS-6855 miniPCI wifi cards.
    http://www.ralinktech.com/supp-1.htm
Download the 11g-RT2500 x64 driver on there.
Here is the direct link. I suggest one of the moderators put this in the DOWNLOAD section of the forums incase someone else needs it and their file hosting is down or something.

Great help for the MS-6855. Device Manager now sees it. Would apreciate ay configuraton settings as it laptop still doesn't see my wireless network. Assume we select FCC but not sure about other parameters. BTW, MSI tech support advised me to return the MS-6855 - they still don't realize their 64 bit drivers don't work!
As you've successfully solved the wireless problem, any ideas on a XP64 driver for the BT portion of card? Again the MSI 64 bit driver pack includes only a driver for a BT dongle which I believe has no place on the 1013 page.
That bluetooth in the big driver pack for the MSI 1013 notebook does work. You have to turn the bluetooth on, then point to where the drivers are. Just extract them to a separate folder on the desktop, install them, then delete them from the desktop. You won't be able to use the BlueSoieli program.. or whatever its called as far as I know. Now I just use the built in windows Bluetooth thing. Works fine for me. The only driver I still don't have its the stupid card reader one, which I would really like.

  • Any chance I can use PC3200 (ECC) from my PC in my iMac?

I write 'my iMac' with faith, as I don't have one yet, but I'm getting closer and closer to pulling the trigger (and selling my powerbook to finance it). You see, I'm basically poor. I've got an open tab in this very browser for a 2gb kit of Corsair Value Select ($217). I've also considered a single gig stick (bringing me up to an unmatched 1.5gb). Then I had a crazy notion:
"My PC, which I hardly use any more due to the gruesome inferiority of XP to OS X, has 2x512mb PC3200 sticks in it... XP doesn't know what to do with anything more than 512!"
They are both ECC sticks, but my understanding is that ECC can work in non-ECC setups, but not vice versa. If you mobo requires ECC, you need ECC, but the ECC functionality can be not used and it'll work like non-ecc memory. Sorry if that wasn't clear, but I'm pretty sure my current mobo doesn't acknowledge or use ECC, yet my ECC ram is running fine. ECC stands for Error Correcting SOMETHING, btw. Servers often use it, runs a bit slower but more stably than non-ECC. Anyway, I've got two chips, a samsung and a crucial chip, and I'm hoping that IF they'll work at all, that one of them would 'match' whatever 512 chip Apple sends stock. Then I can get by with the iMac running on 1gb.
Am I a crazy cheap-skate? The other thing I considered slyly was 'Why not buy that 2gb kit and stick the spare 512 in the PC - then I can run BitTorrent, Google Earth AND a game at the same time on 1.5gb and stave off upgrading to an Intel iMac for another 6 months (ie. 2008?) because I also have 2gb in my iMac.'
    Thanks for your input.
    Alex
p.s. if anyone knows if the spanning hack has any chance to output to DVI, please let me know - or look at my other post - thanks.

    Alex,
    Apple says:
"Important: DIMMs with any of the following features are not supported in the computer: registers or buffers, PLLs, ECC, parity, or EDO RAM."
However, my understanding of the language "not supported" is that they might work, anyway, but if something goes wrong it's not Apple's fault.
With as many iMacs as are in use, there must be someone else who has tried ECC chips, if they are willing to own up to it:-)

  • Does Oracle Application Server (10.1.3.4.0) support JSF 1.2?

Sorry for the double post, but I realized this was more appropriate in the OC4J forum so posted it there. Not sure how to delete this one :-(.
I am trying to migrate from JSF 1.1 to JSF 1.2 on OC4j 10.1.3.4.0 and am running in to problems. I recently stumbled on this post:
    http://kjvarga.blogspot.com/2008/12/oc4j-1013-does-not-support-jsf-12.html
    Which reads as follows:
I spent a very frustrating day wading through the version soup that is JavaServer Faces and trying to deploy a JSF 1.2 app on on OC4J 10.1.3 container. To save you a lot of time, OC4J DOES NOT SUPPORT JSF 1.2.
This technical paper explains that OC4J 10.1.3 (all versions) supports Servlet 2.4, JSP 2.0 and JSF 1.1.
    http://www.oracle.com/technology/tech/java/oc4j/1013/whitepapers/OC4J-FOV-10131.pdf
And this handy webpage explains that "JSF 1.2 is the latest release and it works with servlet 2.5 and jsp 2.1". So obviously it's not compatible. It also details all the versions of Java technologies that each JSF version relies upon.
    http://www.roseindia.net/jsf/jsf-versions.shtml
Is this true? I can't use the JSF spec released in 06 on the most current version of oracle application server? Could someone please confirm/deny/shed some light?
    Thanks so much,
    Yeuker

Found a bit more information located here:
    http://wiki.glassfish.java.net/Wiki.jsp?page=JavaServerFacesRI
    See the section entitled
"Do I have to use a JSP 2.1/Servlet 2.5 container with the Mojarra version 1.2?" which states:
If you're using JSPs for your view descriptions, then yes, you will need to use a JSP 2.1/Servlet 2.5 compliant container. However, if you're using another view technology, such as Facelets or JSFTemplating, you can run JSF 1.2 within a Servlet 2.4 container with out issue.
Now here is the part that may make me look like a newb... not sure if I am "using JSP's for my view descriptions"... what does that mean anyway?
I dont think I am not using Facelets or JSFTemplating. I'm just using standard JSF... All of my pages end in jsp and the standard faces servlet that makes all *.faces requests go through the faces controller servlet. There is really no JSP EL code in my faces pages, just standard jsf tags h:form, f:selectItems, h:inputText etc...
So my question is... am I using JSP's for my view descriptions?

  • IPod Touch 1st Gen 1013 Restore Error Code

So I have my iPod touch that I treat with the utmost care and it got stuck in the apple logo on startup. I tried restoring in the iTunes(hold home button and plug in USB) and DFU mode and I always get the 1013 error code. So yesterday I brought it into the Apple Store and they attempted to restore it and it gave them the 1013 error code. He told me that it was a generic error code and it would cost $250 to get a new 3rd Gen iPod Touch, which isn't a very ideal result. So I spent some time thinking about this and I thought why is it my problem that Apple can't fix their iPod especially if it's a generic error code. I take great care of my iPod and have nothing wrong so why should I be paying $250 for a new one? So today I called Apple Care support and after complaining to them they told me that the $250 would be the cost to *JUST REFURBRISH IT!* So I said "so if I am going to pay $250 dollars then shouldn't I just buy a new 32GB 3rd Gen iPod Touch?" The man said he agreed with me and that he was sorry there was nothing else he could do. I then asked if there was a way to see if the iPod had a software or hardware error and he asked if the genius at the store had run a diagnostics test. I said no because all I had was a restore done and I was sent on my way. He said that the store should have run a diagnostics test because it was protocol. So now I have to go back into the Apple Store and get a diagnostics test run on my iPod because the initial genius didn't follow protocol and just insisted that the iPod touch had a hardware failure so it was out of warranty. I highly doubted it was a hardware failure because restoring the firmware is a software issue. And nobody can give me solid facts why it's not, other than the genius thinking he really is a "genius" and telling me it's not because he didn't follow protocol.
So tell me what else you think I should do other than get the diagnostics test run. Any comments or input would be much appreciated.
My overall goal would be to have my iPod replace or fixed for free because that would be the reasonable thing to do. Especially because all the trouble Apple has cause me thus far.

  • IPhone 3GS - The iPhone "iPhone" could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (1013)

    Hey everyone,
First off, here are my specs:
iTunes Version: 10.4.1.10 running on Windows 7
iPhone 3GS running 4.3.5 (not jailbroken)
I'm going nuts with this issue with my iPhone 3GS. After messing around with my phone, I managed to put it into recovery mode, which was not intentional. So I thought I could just restore my iPhone and resync, but everytime I do so, the iPhone will reach 99% (according to the progress bar on the phone), and then pause for 2 minutes and then come back with this error:
The iPhone "iPhone" could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (1013)
So I've looked at the Apple support page and followed those steps but didn't work. I have searched forums, youtube instructional videos on how to fix this error, but nothing seemed to work. I know about the "hosts" file in C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\etc, but when I checked, there were no DNS entries for gs.apple.com. I've also tried restoring on different computers (including a Macbook), but the same issue occurs.
I have a feeling that because I'm using the latest version of iTunes, that it's causing this problem. I want to know if anyone can offer their help because again, it's driving me nuts!
    Thanks,
    Neocec

  • IPhone 3G update to 3.0 with repeated 1013 errors - now bricked iPhone! ;-(

Attempting to update an iPhone 3G to 3.0 from 2.2.1 and it's now a brick.
Note that I've tried this now from THREE different computers, two macs and one windows box with identical results. I've uninstalled iTunes on the windows box before doing the update attempt.
The error message is "1013" which also takes you to this highly uninformative page: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1275.
Ok, the USB cables and ports on three computers see the same problem error. So it's either the iPhone itself or iTunes 8.2 (23) or both.
Digging a bit deeper I found that there is a log file kept on the mac. Change to this directory from your home directory "~/Library/Logs/iPhone Updater Logs/" where you'll find one "iPhoneUpdater N.log" file for each attempt to update that you've done.
When the error occurs Apple asks if I want to send the info to them! YES!!! Make sure you do so that they can sort this out.
Ok, looking in this log file (I won't dump it all here) you can see a number of errors. The end of the log file shows:

Clearly there are some problems. Earlier in the log file it had problems updating a number of files.
Now I've tried this "Connect your iPhone to the computer. press and hold sleep and home, and as soon screen goes blank, count off 5 seconds, then let go of sleep and keep holding home." That didn't change anything. sigh.
It's almost as if this particular version of the iPhone that I have is incompatible with the current iPhone 3.0 operating system components. Maybe there is a bad driver? Hmmm....
Ok, here is another error in the log file.
    Loading FLS file /usr/local/standalone/firmware/ICE2_04.26.08.fls...OK

So clearly the file "/usr/local/standalone/firmware/ICE2_04.26.08.fls" isn't transferred properly! Something is amiss somewhere...
Could it really be that it can't download the update file to the iPhone due to USB problems? Surely Apple has access to fault tolerant file transfer protocols they can use?
Sigh... now I'm without my primary phone... grrrr... arrrrg... should have waited....
Apple maybe you could learn something about "ACID TRANSACTIONS" and include them into the update process to guarantee either 100% success or 100% abort rollback?
I don't know if this is relevant but now in iTunes on the iPhone page it no longer shows any values at all for the "name, capacity, software version or serial number" fields which is kind of spooky. Does this mean that I need to take the phone in for service? Is it permanently toast?

Just visitied the Apple Store in Vancouver and wasn't allowed in! They had a wall of orange shirts AND two mall SECURITY guards preventing people from entering UNLESS you were there to purchase a new iPhone 3GS!
The orange shirt gave me grief refusing to allow me to see a service person! So I asked to speak to his manager. Matt showed up and read me the same riot act of BAD CUSTOMER SERVICE!!! They claimed it was the first day since they opened that they closed their Genius Bar!
The fact remains that it was APPLE's Update that bricked my iPhone that I depend upon.
So the manager went off to get his boss when I asked him too. I think he was just glad to get away from a rational insistent customer spoiling their wonderful happy Apple day selling new phones.
So a non-technician showed up and offered to take my phone into the store and try to update it. She lied. She returned to tell me that my warranty was expired due to the "water litmus" paper being RED. ***? You've got to be kidding! I've NEVER had it anywhere near water! The lie was that she didn't actually try to connect it and that she was going to secretly find out if my warranty was void. Not what I call informed consent.
So I asked her to check and try updating the phone anyway and off she trundled. Less than no time she returned telling me that my iPhone couldn't be seen by three of their computers! ***! It was working on my three computers at home!
In fact as I type this it's running another update this moment. About 3/4 done.
So now Apple's Update Bricked my iPhone which was working perfectly without any problems. If they hadn't brought their update out the phone would still be working just great!
Needless to say I'm extremely annoyed yet composed (for the moment).
So my options at this point seem to be to (1) replace the phone for ~260.00 CAD or (2) upgrade to a 3GS for an indeterminate amount if FIDO permits it, or (3) hope that Apple home base gets their act together with a new iTunes update which can at least get the phone working again, (4) toss the phone off a bridge, (5) sue Apple and FIDO for their negligence in providing faulty software updates that bricked the phone. Grrr... Arrrggg....
Oh, it just failed the update again! At least it can be seen by my computers (two mac and one vista box).
    Ok, now what...
CHECK YOUR iPhone warranty voided strips to see if they are RED/PINK! If it's only iPhones with RED that are the problem then maybe that's the cause. HOWEVER, if even ONE iPhone has this problem and it's not got a RED water strip then it's conclusive that the problem is elsewhere - basic diagnostic process and rock solid logic. Please check your RED WARRANTY VOIDED STRIPS and let me know here... you check them with a flash light at the bottom of your iPhone in the slot where the SIMM card is and where the dock/cable connector goes in. Shin the light into there and move the phone or the light about till you see either a 1/4 inch long strip - RED/PINK means you Apple won't honor your warranty or their craftsmanship.
Ok... now to find out how much it will cost to upgrade to a 3GS on the FIDO plan. Sigh. Grrr... arrrggggg....

  • Java.lang.Error: JAX-RPC 1.1 method is not supported in WLS 8.1 clients.

We have some web services that run under OC4J 10.1.3.4. We have various JEE 'client' apps (JSF, servlets etc.) that use these web services. These JEE apps also run under OC4J.
We started a migration project from oc4j to weblogic 10.3.2. In phase 1 we want to move these JEE 'client' apps to weblogic. In phase 2 we want to move the web services themselves to weblogic with adjustments to the JEE 'client' apps as needed.
However we ran into an issue during this phase 1. Deploying these JEE 'client' apps to weblogic results in an error like this:
java.lang.Error: JAX-RPC 1.1 method is not supported in WLS 8.1 clients. If you are attempting to run an OC4J 10.1.3 JAX-RPC client in WLS, please see the Web Service Migration Guide for instructions.
We are including Oracle web services client libraries (http://download.oracle.com/otn/java/oc4j/1013/wsclient_extended.zip) in these JEE 'client' apps's war files because weblogic does not have them.
What part of Web Service Migration Guide is the above error message talking about? Do we have to re-generate the client side proxies for all these web services using weblogic's clientgen task in 'JAXRPC' mode? Many of these web services are doc/literal jax-rpc web services. Or does the migration guide recommend we migrate the web services first to weblogic? Any other specific information on working around this error message would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi,
I had the same issue but I just managed to fix it. You must upgrade and/or regenerate you proxy. This creates new classes (possibily in a new package) that you must use in your code. I had this error because the classes directory was not clean after the rebuild and the old classes (in the old package) were still present, so the compilation was successful with the old classes. So clean your classes directories, regenerate your proxy and use the new classes in your code.
    Regards,
    Sylvain

  • Support for C 'n' Q with CG-revision Athlon 64

Recently I bought a MSI K8T FSR motherboard and an Athlon 64 3000+, CG-revision. The new system is very stable and fast, the processor seems to be correctly identified, the only problem is Cool and Quiet isn't working.
I've installed clean copy's of Windows XP and Windows 2000, installed all latest software (corecenter etc), biosses and drivers, configured power management in Windows and enabled the feature in the bios, installed the special processor driver/software but still the clockspeed seems to be locked. The AMD cpuinfo tool and the msi corecenter both report a constant clockspeed of 2000 Mhz when run in Windows 2000 and a constant speed of 1600Mhz when run in XP. Heavy benchmarking or let the pc idling for 15 minutes, clockspeeds won't change. The constant 1600 Mhz reading in Xp is especially starnge, according the to AMD whitepaper this isn't a speedstepping for the processor, it should be switching between 1000/1800/2000Mhz. (see http://www.amd.com/us-en/assets/content_type/white_papers_and_tech_docs/30430.pdf , page 9, at column ADA3000AEP4AR)
In the release notes, it says support for the CG-revision of the processor is added in the last bios version, but C 'n' Q for Cg is still to come?
In a dutch forum, I'm not the only one encountering this problem, so I suspect it's not a standalone case.
The other hardware in my system, just for the reference: zalman 7000A cooler, nexus 3000 psu, 40 GB maxtor harddisk, geforce 2 MX, 512 MB PC3200 Kingston mem.

That worked!  I went to the AMD site you mentioned, more specifically, this page, and downloaded the last program on the bottom of the page.  After a restart, vwaa-la!  800 MHz!  Never thought I'd be so happy to see my new machine run slower than my old machine.
Anyway, it works now... thanks for the help ... hope you get yours working too.
