Menu with submenu in front panel

Hi,
I have some Enum controls in my code where each of them includes 3 items. I'm trying to build a drop down menu in the front panel and include all these controls. Obviously the items in each control would be sub-items in this situation. Any suggestions to do this?
Note that I don't want to use Run-time menu. It makes a lot of problems when building the application file.
Thanks

hi,
I think you should use .Net Toolstrip. I've created a toolkit for that so it is very easy to use. Link: Here
In the example you can see how to use toolstrip as a replacement of LV RTM but It can be used as an individual control and I think this could solve your problem.

  • How can I stop and restart a .vi with a single front panel button?

    Hey guys, a newbie here.
I have a .vi with a stacked sequence. The first few frames are hardware initialization and settings (LIN master node) and the data the hardware should transmit (frame response table). In the next frame there's a loop in which the hardware sends and recieves data (LIN monitor). If I want to change the initialization, settings or data values, I have to stop the .vi and restart it. I was wondering if there is a simple way of doing this with a single click (a button on the front panel).
An alternative would be to put another loop outiside the whole stacked sequence and then run it a single time with a push of a button (the inner loop should let the outer one restart), is that possible?
I hope I made any sense. Thanks for any suggestions.

Ideally, redoing the code with a state machine would be the best way to go, if only so that you can add this powerful tool to your toolbox. That being said, wrapping your existing code in a while loop, with its own stop button to stop the program, will work if executing the entire sequence is ok. Where you might run into problems with this is if there is a step in the sequence that shouldn't be executed again, then it would require wrapping that sequence frame's code in a case statement that executes only the first time through. If you have the time, learning how to use a state machine would be a real benefit, really taking your LabVIEW knowledge to the next step, if you pardon the pun.

  • Display and interact with a vi front panel on remote C++ app

    Hello:
I am new to LV and need a little advice.  I need to display a LabVIEW VI front panel in my C++ .Net application that users can interact with to view real-time spectrum data.  The C++ app (client) must reside on a separate computer(s) from the VI so that the client can connect from anywhere around the world and interact with the VI.
I am not sure about the basic architecture that should accompany a good solution.  We want to use TCP/IP but not DataSocket.  I do not have access to Measurement Studio but I do have access to LabVIEW Professional Development System v 8.2.  Can anyone provide suggestions on what I need to do in order to
    1.  Connect to my TCP server using my C++ client app - I have already written TCP client and server code which communicate but now I need to integrate LV
    2.  Get access to the VI sitting on that server
    3.  Send the VI front panel to the client for display
    4.  Allow the user to modify parameters on the front panel displayed on the C++ client, send those changes back to the server, and refresh the front panel displayed in the C++ client given the new parameters (I would like a real-time display of the spectrum to always be available)
Is this possible?  Has anyone done this using C++ .NET in VS2005?  Are there examples I can mimic or references that will help direct me?  I have searched and searched through NI's help and found a lot of good stuff but I'm still feeling confused about the best way to utilize LV.
    Thank you in advance!

One more question ... what if I could use Measurement Studio?  The documentation seems to indicate that it's easy to create network applications and therefore it would be easy for me to re-create our VI's front panel using Measurement Studio components in my C++ app and then simply connect those components to the networked hardware (TCP/IP or DataSocket) that could be located anywhere in the world.
Depending on what components you are using in your LabVIEW panel, it is probably pretty easy to build a Measurment Studio application to look like a LV panel.
Given that, you could use network shared variables to move data across the network, no TCP programming necessary -- I think that this is pretty easy to do, but I don't know the specifics about variable programming in that environment.  Also, you will probably need to add some smarts to the server side to make sure that it is reading to and writing from variables in an appropriate manner.
Question: why can't you just use LabVIEW for the client application also?

  • How can I display only the Data Logging pull down menu on my LV front panel?

Is it possible to hide all unused pull down menu on my front panel vi like File, Edit, View etc.. and only
display the pull down menu for the Data logging?!
    best regards

    Hey,
You can build your own runtime menu (Edit>runtime menu) and then e.g. only display the application items you want to.

  • ALWAYS NOISE from my guitar with SB ExtremeGamer + Front Panel (Fatal1ty I/O Drive)

No clue where to start from – anyway here goes – i got win7 64-bit and latest SB drivers (Beta after trying the older ones).
When i connect my guitar to my front Line 2/Mic 2 there is a LOT of hiss, wizz, and stuff - i tried from the line in (sound card from the back and mic) same result - i am trying to use some guitar effects, studio software.
I will lay all the steps I did to try to get a sound or GOOD sound from both Amplitube 3 and Guitar Rig 4 ; I was able to get the sound a BIT fair from amplitube Fender ONCE (I also tried Hendrix, AMpeg,Metal,X-gear) – that was when I connected to Line2/Mic2 Front Creative panel – other than that I can NEVER EVER GET A SOUND from those software. Any help would really be appreciated.
In a nutshell I have Sound Blaster X-FI Fatal1ty (ExtremeGamer XFi Pro Edition) with the front Fatal1ty I/O Drive that has all sorts of inputs (Digital + analog):

  • Spry Menu with submenu border?

    Hi Everyone,
I'm a bit of a newbie, and I am designing a website with a spry menu (which I have since found out probably wasn't the best way to go) and I have hit a hurdle which I can't fix or find the solution to anywhere. I'm hoping it might be easy for you guys.
I have attached a pic of the problem, one menu item has a submenu, this is the 'About' menu, as you can see, it has a border top and bottom that I can't seem to find in the code in order to get rid of it. If anyone could let me know how to fix this I'll be extremely grateful!
Also, any suggestions of better menu methods would be appreciated.
    Have a nice day

  • Help with USB for front Panel on case!!

Ive got the K7N2G mobo and Im trying to connect to JBT1 for Front USB.. it mentions bluetooth connection but it also talks about it being for USB.. Pleas help.. am i missing a bios setting?  How else can i get the front sub ports to work on my case?

You got mixed up, JBT1 shares a USB connection with a USB header. If you use JBT1 for bluetooth you must give up one of the USB ports but you can't use JBT1 for USB.
And I moved you over to the nvidia/sis section since you posted in the VIA section.

  • Using a "menu ring" feature on the front panel with event structures

hello - right now i have many event cases controlled by many "ok buttons". i would like to use a menu ring on the front panel to save space from all those buttons, but i don't see how it will work with all the individual event cases. currently each event is tied to a single button, and the menu ring acts as one thing on the block diagram so i can't tie an event to a choice in the menu. any suggestions? thanks....

Alternativley, you could use an enum control instead of a menu ring. It will name the cases according to the selection automatically.
If you want to use a menu ring and strings, you could do something like in this image.

  • LV2011 problem with several front panels

    Hello,
There is a bug in my software and I don't know it is common to every one or not. This not to be worry, I will notify you anyway. When I open only one front panel and one block diagram which having a program to communicate with a serial device. In this case, if I choose the VISA resource name, it obviously takes some time to popup the USB and after it show the port and front panel will stay in front you until you choose the device. Here, every thing is fine but when I open several front panels and working on only with serial program front panel to choose the serial device in VISA resource name. Then after some time, it took me to another front panel. I have seen this problem several times in past two months. More, even when I am decorating the front panel and front panel took some time after pushing some controls and switched another front panel.
Is this bug? Or I common for every one.
    Using labVIEW 2011.

I am certainly using labVIEW from two months. So, I did not use MAX in my past time. I only used one time to check my USB 6008 device but this is off topic here. I will tell you down here.
Suppose, If I open multiple VI's and I am only working with one VI that can communicate with my SERIAL device and the rest of the VI's(Block diagram and front panel) are rested. This case, if I click the drop downlist of "VISA resource name" of SERIAL VI, then it took some time(200ms or 100 ms, just it is a guess) to populate and it is switched to another front panel which were opened and rested before. Again, I need to come to my serial front panel again to select the COM port. This is one case.
If don't have any other VI's not opened than this serial Vi. Then it stays on the same front panel.
Is this bug came with labVIEW or  is it common?

  • Hiding front panel with built applications

I've seen and used the techniques to run a VI with a hidden front panel. I have the VI open a reference to itself and it works as expected. However when I build my code into an application, it no longer works. Watching Task Manager I see the application quit when the panel becomes hidden. I've even tried building the window-less.zip example I downloaded from the NI website. It worked in VI form but not in EXE form. Anyone have any suggestions?
    Andy Brown
    Averna

    Andy,
I ran into this problem back in LabVIEW 5.1 when I was developing a game in LabVIEW. I had an introductory screen that allowed the user to run the tutorial or play the game, and upon selection I hid the introductory screen and displayed the panel of the appropriate subVI (tutorial or game). Unfortunately when I built an executable, it would end once I chose to run a subVI, and I later found out that this is because closing the front panel of an executable essentially closes its reference. My workaround was to use LabVIEW 6i and the new tab control to keep all of my front panel operations in the same VI, and programmatically switch between the tabs in order to display different screens (like tutorial, enter info screens, the actual game, etc.)
    I hope this
suggestion helps. There may be a way to bypass the problem with closing EXEs once their front panels are gone, but I do not know of one.
Good luck with your application, and have a pleasant day.

  • Audigy 2 card with Audigy Front Panel not worki

I've just bought a used audigy 2 card with an audigy front panel. I have installed everything and have sound from the card to my speakers.
The front panel has a blinking light on the optical out and when I plug headphones into the panel, I can hear static and control the volume of the static from the knob on the panel.
I can't hear anything else through the headphone jack and can't get any input signal using the line 2 input on the front panel.
Connections and drivers appear to be OK, am I missing something......
    Thanks,Dave.

    David,
If you go into the surround mixer or Windows mixer do you see a listing for the front panel inputs (line in2/mic in2, Aux 2, etc)? If so, are any of them muted? If you go to start/programs/Creative/SB Audigy/Audio HQ/Device Settings, do you show a headphone tab? If so what options are enabled in there?
Double check your ribbon cable connection and maybe even swap sides of the cable.

  • Can't remove Front Panels in Application Builder

I have had a few issues using Application Builder (v7.1) in regards to it removing or not removing front panels for my subvi's when I was trying to compile. Here are the conclusions I came to if anyone else runs into the problems I had.
Problem 1) Some of the front panels were being removed for dynamically loaded VI's, which were not set as dynamic VI's in the Application Builder, but which were static-linked VI's in the program (so they were loaded in memory as linked subvi's but called dynamically). When the Application Builder decided to remove the front panel for those VI's, there was an error when loading them dynamically.
Problem 2) Some of the front panels were NOT being removed for subvi's that I didn't want to have their front panel built into the compiled program. Loading front panels that are not needed uses extra memory, but there was no way to change the option to not load the front panel for certain particular subvi's in Application Builder--the option was grayed out.
For problem 1, I decided not to worry about linking the files dynamically in the Application Builder, but to just make sure the Application Builder would include their front panels. For problem 2, I had to figure out what was making Application Builder force the front panels to be included when I deemed it unnecessary, so that I could fix them not to be included. Basically then, going through my VI's that were forcibly included, I came up with a list of stuff I began checking for each time I would run into one where I didn't want to include the front panel. I have attached my list to this post.
My solution for problem 1 was then to use a customized appearance for my static-linked / dynamically loaded VI's, and disable the menu bar (forces the front panel to be included by Application Builder without changing appearance, since I never actually see the FP). My solution for problem 2 was often to remove property nodes referencing text on the front panel controls. Sometimes I was able to perform a numeric->text or enum->text conversion instead of referencing the text of the control itself, and sometimes I realized I didn't want anything to change and that it was ok to include the front panel so I could (for example) get a list of strings for my enum control.
I have attached the reference list I came up with of things to check for to make sure your VI properties are set correctly if you are trying to get Application Builder NOT to include the front panel of your subvi. The list might not be complete, but it's helped me to narrow down things very quickly and find the problems I was having.

This is expected behaviour. The application has no way of knowing that these VIs will at some time be called dynamically. That would require analysing and understanding the entire program and in cases where you calculate the dynamic VI to be called at runtime it still wouldn't be feasable to do so.

There are several reasons why a front panel is needed. One of them is when the VI is called dynamically, even if the FP is never displayed and AppBuilder will account for that for VIs which have been added as dynamic VI to the project.
The other is when a VI uses some Property Nodes or Attribute Nodes as they are called now.
So to solve your problem 1) you could also just drop some property node in the diagram of such VIs and be done with it.

  • How to data log graphs using front panel data logging?

Hello I have a VI that collects data from DAQmx thermocouple readings and graphs the temperature vs time using a while loop to collect data and graph. I have 9 control operators that define the correction factor of the thermocouples.
I want to create a datalogging using the option under Operations>Data Logging
When I retrieve the data the only information that is present are the control operators correction factors that I defined. The graphed data that was created is not retrieved.
Is there a solution to show the graphed data plots that were created on the front panel? They remain unchanged from the last run of the VI or blank if I open the VI without having ran the program.
    Thank you.

This is expected for the Data Logging in LabVIEW. If you want to record the signla data, use the Write to Measurement File Express VI.  Here's a link with a walk-through:

The Data Logging from the Operate Menu is for recording front panel control(s), as you have observed.

  • Multiple VI on a Single Front Panel

Probably a simple question but I'm having trouble figuring out how to do it.
First, I have LabView 2010, Professional Development System
I have been trying to learn LabView the hard way.  I've been reading the documentation, starting with Getting Started and testing VI and front panels for instruments we have in the lab.  I can run the examples and control the instruments individually through individual front panels.
My question is, "How do I create a single front panel (or application), that consists of several instruments?"
For instance, I have an Agilent 34970, Data Actuisition Unit.  And I can create a front panel (and block diagram) to read data from the instrument input terminals, operate switches, etc.  I also have a GenSys Power Supply and can control the voltage levels and on/off, from it's front panel. But the two panels (and block diagrams) are not linked.
I have other instruments but understanding how to link two different block diagrams (with single front panel), will help me figure out how to expand it to multiple.
How do I integrate multiple block diagrams (or VI), with a single front panel (and block diagram) such that I can use loops, structures and conditions in one, that can be used to control the programming in the other.  For instance, say I want to sample an input on the 34970 and if it's between x and y voltage, then set the power supply to another voltage and test again. This requires two VI acting in synchronization with each other.
I can do each seperately but am stuck on how to integrate these into a single application.
    Thanks,

    Hi Mike,
Patricia B is right... You can try sub vi. But if you really want to put two vi's in a same window you can try sub panel. But it is not recommanded... Check these vis....

  • How to keep a "front panel" open during another sequence?

    Hello everybody,
I'm new on the TestStand forum and I have a question for my project.
I need to make a test sequence with several sub-steps: Barcode reading, Data reading, Data analysis etc... and all these steps in a "For" or "Do... while" loop under TestStand.
Before doing the loop, I want to create a "global HMI" step using labview, with on the front panel, the status of each sub-steps. I need to update the status of each sub-step after their execution.
    The sequence TS is:
Step Action Labview: HMI.vi (display front panel when calling vi)
    Loop for
    Barcode reading
    Data reading
    Data analysis...
That's why I need to keep the front panel of "HMI.vi" always open to updated /display the status of each sub-step. (something like colors of a LED). I doner 't want to call the HMI.vi after each sub-step.
I understood it's a multi-threading process and the reference of HMI.vi should always be active during all the "for loop", but I don't how to keepthe reference.
Could you please kindly show me how to do it under TestStand (verstion 4.1) with LV (7.1).
    Many thanks in advance,

    Hi zuzu,
A UIMessage is typically used as a method to alert and pass information from your sequence or code modules to the User Interface.
For a good discussion on this, refer to the section titled "Communication from the Test to the User Interface" here:
Developer Zone Tutorial: Best Practices for NI TestStand User Interface Development
However, you can register a callback to listen for these UIMessages in other parts of your code besides the UI as well. That's what we are doing in this case with the floating panel.
So basically, in your "Update HMI" step, you would post a UIMessage using RunState.Thread.PostUIMessage.
This posts the UIMessage, and you can pass whatever value you want from  the "Update HMI" step to the HMI.vi.
For information on the function call, refer to:
    NI TestStand Help: Thread.PostUIMessage
In this case, we are sending a UIMessage with message code 10200, along with 2 pieces of data, Locals.Progress (a numeric) and "TestProcedure" (a string).
Typically, you can pass a Number, a String, a Boolean and a Variant with each UI Message. If you need to send multiple pieces of data of the same type (your second question), then you should bundle them together into an array or cluster (container) and pass it via the ActiveX parameter.
See the following forum posts for more details:
