Merging 2 address books without overwriting

I want to add the contents of the address book on my office desktop IMac running leopard 10.5.6 into the address book on my black macbook laptop also running 10.5.6. is there a way to do this without completely overwriting the contents on my laptop? I don't want to lose what's already there, only add in the additional names and addresses. There is no security issue. I own the company and both machines.
Thanks for any help or suggestions.

Hi,
So here's what I did. My iMac G5 running Tiger blew up (logic board) and, while I wait for my new 27" iMac, I needed to put all the contacts from the old iMac on my macbook (running Leopard), where I keep different contacts. Since I couldn't open the iMac contacts and export them as vCards (because that computer was dead and all the user data is backed up on an external HD) for instance I needed to merge both address books another way.
After reading through all these discussions and the ones on macrumors, and realizing that Address Book doesn't come equipped to do this easily (probably to get you to pay for a mobileme account) I took a deep breath and just did the following: Created an archive of the existing contacts on my macbook and then moved the entire macbook ~library/application support/Address Book folder to some place safe just as a backup of those; then copied the same folder from my iMac backup archive into that location on the macbook. Voila, not only did all my old addresses appear, but all the macbook ones were there too, without having to reimport them. No idea why this worked but it did. WOuld love however if someone more knowledgeable has an explanation.
Couple of notes. I tried using migration assistant, but I couldn't figure out how to get it to just migrate the address book and nothing else from my iMac user account backup. Don't want all that stuff on my macbook. Also, if you try to import an Address Book Archive, it warns you that it will delete all current addresses, so won't work to merge two different address books. And if the macbook addresses had appeared magically, my plan was to export all the addresses from the iMac that were now available on my MacBook, then replace the ~library/application support/Address Book folders again and import the vCards.
Final note, you'd think it would be easier to synch the addresses books on two computers. I'm sure plenty of folks have both a desktop and laptop they use for different things but would like to have all their addresses available on both machines. But, as I said, I suspect it has to do with drumming up mobileme business.
Anyways, I hope this helps someone else and I'd love some feedback on why this worked.

  • Merge Address Book Cards Greyed out

    Hi all,
I've got an envelope that I use every once in a while. It has a logo and return address. For the recipient address, I just go to address book, change the information in the group that I call "current envelope" then I go to pages, merge and print.
However, last time I went to do this, it added the address that I wanted from the group, plus 3 other addresses (i don't know where they came from.) When I try to merge again with the address book to refresh the data, the Merge Address Book Cards option is grey. What is going on?
    Thanks for any help.

    Hi Osvaldo
I can just confirm I had it once too. I just restarted. That solved it. But I always tought that is a Win solution If I can reproduce it I try to search why it happened.
But I have an other problem with mail merge:
If I merge more then 1 address it asks me if it shall put it in a new document. If it does so it removes all the empty fields. If you merge only 1 address it merges it always in the curent document and the empty fields stay. That still would be ok but they also print with the field name on the letters. Looks like a bug to me.
Sure I could remove the fields manually... but hey? Either it should give the possibility to merge it into a new document even with 1 address and remove the empty fields or keep it in the same document with the empty fields but shouldn't print them.
I think this are the small thing they will need to sort out over time (like that there is no possiblity to choose from "recent documents" in the open/create file wizard - if you close the wizard it closes Pages too. Or that after opening Pages without the wizard and choosin from the recent documents the blank document created automatically with the start up is not closed automatically if it wasn't edit before an other file was opened (yes , even MS has some smart tricks)).
    Cheers

  • Is there a way to send an e-mail to everyone in my address book WITHOUT typing/selecting each address in individually?

My old e-mail address is going to be discontinued and I need to notify everyone in my Mozilla Thunderbird address book. Is there a way to send an e-mail to everyone in my address book WITHOUT typing/selecting each address in individually?

    Bonjour zmerill
Yes it is possible and simple to do.
    - In the compose window of TB, display the address books on the left
    - select the adress book you want
    - select normally the first contact (left click)
    - while pressing a shift key, select the last contact (--> all selected)
    - just under the last contact, use the button you want.
In an address book it is also possible to create a mailing list.

  • How to merge address book fields

    Okay, here goes...
I have created a template page in Pages so that I can print out some laser address labels and utilise the merge address book fields to speed up the process, but I have hit a problem.
The template that I have created has 21 text boxes with address fields applied, so I thought I would end up with 21 different addresses on one page.
Wrong! I have ended up with hundreds of pages with 21 of the same address per page, when really I want there to be 21 different addresses per page.
What am I doing wrong here? Can Pages handle this kind of thing as I know that it works perfectly for letters where you would only have one address per page.
    Please help
    Regards

Wrong! I have ended up with hundreds of pages with 21 of the same address per page, when really I want there to be 21 different addresses per page.
    This is the normal behavior
It's perfectly described in the Help which states:

You can personalize a document for multiple recipients by using multiple Address Book cards.
To insert recipient data for contacts in multiple cards:
Open a document that contains recipient fields.
Select the Address Book cards you want to use, and then drag them to a recipient field.
In the dialog that appears, choose New Document from the pop-up menu to create a new document that contains a section for each contact. Otherwise, choose “Send to printer” from the pop-up menu _to print a personalized copy of the document for each contact._

You just didn't read sufficiently carefully the Help.

  • Can I email my entire address book without adding each address to an email independently?

    any help would be awesome!
    Thanks, everyone!

I'm not following what you want to do.
Do you want to email your address book to someone?
    OR
Do you want to send an email everyone in your address book?
The first is what I described. The second is what Bob described.
Ahh. I think I understand your subject, now. What you meant was,
"Can I send an email to everyone in my address book without ..."
Yes, as Bob described. In the To line, type the name of the group you wish to send to. You can't use "All Contacts," though. You could either create a new group and drag all contacts to that group, or select All Contacts, select a contact and type cmd-A to select all, then drag those all to the To field.

  • Two Machines, Merge To Make 1 Address Book Without Duplicates

    Hello,
So I currently have two computers I use:
    MacBook (White) running Snow Leopard
    iMac (21.5'') running OSX Lion
I use both computers, and also do email on both. I do email through Sparrow.app which when I add to address book, adds to the local address book. What this has resulted in is that I have 2 address books, both of them have SOME of the same contacts, but some that are not on the other...
My question is how could I merge these while still keeping the most up-to-date ones from each?
Then once they are sync-ed, is there a way to have them automatically update through iCloud (Note, I am willing to upgrade to Lion on my MacBook if this is possible, so that is not a factor)
    Thanks!

    Great.
I think the TM restore would have been much quicker. I was under the assumption that everything was good on the Mac address book.
Not sure what happened since then.  Did you read my post (at 2:01pm above) before things went wrong?
"Try this. Disable iCloud on your mac. Select to keep contacts on the computer when quiting. Verify address book contains all your contacts. If you don't have a backup such as TM, export address book contacts so you will have a backup.
Your address book should have been correct or you could have corrected the contacts then and you would have had the backup files exported if you didn't have or trust TM.
Go to the iCloud website and delete all contacts there.
At the iCloud website, you should have been able to select all addresses at one time and delete. That would have left no addresses in iCloud. Only addresses left should have been on your Mac from the last step.
Once done, go back and log into iCloud on your computer and merge the contacts. The website should now contain the addresses from your address book.
Unless something else was wrong and creating multiple contacts, the only addresses in iCloud would have been merged from what was in your address book on your computer.
I don't know what happened or where we went wrong. I'll check back in the morning if you post any other info.
    Hope it works out.

  • How do I view a Backed Up Address file WITHOUT overwriting my existing one?

I think I have a few contacts that may have gotten erased in my address book. On a regular basis, I back up my contact list on an external hard drive. How do I view a contact in that address book back up copy without overwriting my whole file?
    Thanks so much.
    Sincerely,
    Skip

ok, the following will work. Quit address book and move the folder homedirectory/Library/Application Support/Address Book to the desktop.
start address book. it will be blank and that folder will be recreated. import the archive. find the contact you need, select it and drag it to the desktop. this will create a v-card for this contact on the desktop (you can do it to several contacts at once). Now quit address book, trash the folder homedirectory/Library/Application Support/Address Book and move the copy of that folder from the desktop back to homedirectory/Library/Application Support. Start address book and import the v-card you've made.

  • Merge address books from 2 blackberry's

I just tried to merge two address books.  I transfered my address book from my blackberry 8110 to my 8330.  All my 8110 contacts went over to the 8330, but all the contacts that were on my 8330 are gone.  Any idea how to recover those without losing what is on the phone now?

Yes, good at least you have the backup.
Do as John suggested... that is where I was headed with asking if you head the backup.
So, backup the 8130 also, first.
    Sync it to Outlook.
Restore the 8330 data and sync it (set the sync config one-way) to Outlook.
Get all your data correct and fully in Outlook, and sync (set the sync config back to two way) back to the BlackBerry

  • How to sync Nokia 9300i & Address Book without loosing contacts data/labels

    Hi,
I have a Nokia comunicator 9300i and would like to backup the contacts in it (over 700) using a Mac. I can do that on the PC using Nokia's own backup suite.
Yes, Nokia Comunicator 9300i is on the supported devices list and yes it does sync nicely and it does transfer data. It is only that the diferent labels asigned by me in the telephone are just wiped away and replaced with either "business" or "private" depending of what iSync or Address Book "thinks" is apropriate. And in my case these are not apropriate labels.
For example many contacts bear the name of the company under which there are listed contact persons and their mobile phone numbers (each with a label, ex: John, Mary etc) their faxes and emails and so on. All these names are replaced at random by Address Book by "private" or "business" or just simply wiped completely away. The problem is that it does the same on the telephone, in other words, it wipes away the labels from the telephone also. The result is that following syncing, the telephone contact list would diplay under the contact " Company X" for example just a list of phone numbers listed as "private" or "business" or simply, without label whatsoever.
    Allow me to exemplify:
    Contact 1 (business X)
    * John: phone number 1
    *Mary: phone number 2
    Contact 2 (business Y)
    *Max: phone number 1
    *Vicky: phone number 2
    *Todd: phone number 3
After syncing, the Adress Book as well as the telephone contact database will look like this:
    Contact 1 (business X)
    *"private": phone number 1
    *"no label": phone number 2
    Contact 2 (business Y)
    *"no label": phone number 1
    *"business": phone number 2
    *"no label": phone number 3
The idea would be to preserve those "labels" that I assigned in the telephone.
I have tried few times already (when I had a smaler contact database) and it messed up the telephone in the sens that it wiped the labels away and I had to reassign them manually on the phone. Now that I have over 700 clients in the database I cannot afford to mess it up. Yes, I have been using a PC to backup this but I would rather move everything to the Mac, that is why this problem in the first place.
Therefore, does anybody know how I can adjust the settings of AddressBook or iSync so that the above mentioned situation would no longer occur?
Alternatively, if you know of a plug that would increase the manipulation possibilities of iSync or AddressBook or even a software that will help with this problem, would you please share that knowledge?
I know that these forums are not to promote other products than Apple's but in this case, unless there is possible to adjust the setings of the above mentioned Apple programs, any 3th party solution that would help do my work within Mac OS X environment is in my opinion welcome. The alternative is to just use Windows and I am trying hard to avoid that.
Thanks for any and all help.

    Hi
I have the same problem. I'm on a Nokia E51 and it synchronizes the individual contacts fine.
Starting point: None of my contacts where parted in groups.
2: I made a group in my adressbook called "FIR" wich is my studygroup.
3: I can still synchronize the contacts. But the group ("FIR") i've created does not show up on my phone!?
Do I have to make the "FIR" group on the phone myself? I figured it would be easier to make the group in AdressBoook and then Synch it.

  • How do I export a subdirectory of my address book without exporting the entire address book?

I use sub-directories (contact groups) in my address book for different groups of contacts. I need to move one group to another email client but when using the export function, there does not seem to be any way to select just one group. The export function exports the entire address group without regard to my sub groupings. Is there any way around this?

Thank you for the quick response. Right after I posted my question I tried something I had already tried without success thinking that maybe I hadn't been thorough enough. I selected all the addresses within the list I wanted to export by using my shift key rather than the "select all" feature. I then used the export tool and saved it as a csv file. It worked exactly as needed.

  • How can I copy a mailing list into address book without having to type them individualy

    Hi
I have a mailing list and I would like to send emails to everyone on the list in one go, I copied and pasted the list into my email, but can I have this group somewhere so that I can just call it up like an ordinary address from the address book, preferably without having to type every name individualy into the address book. I tried making a group in the address book and pasting the list in without success,if this is possible can some explain how I can acheive this
    Thankyou
    Richard

    Richard,
Unfortunately, you have to add them one at a time - wait a sec... oh, yeah, if the contact is in your contact list it will 'auto-fill' as you begin to type. So if I want Wendy Whatshername, all I have to do is type Wen and the contacts will show up for you to select and auto-fill the name and email address.
    Hope this helps,
    Clinton

  • In Lion, can I hide the address book without the application closing?

In Snow Leopard, when I clicked the red circle in the upper left-hand corner of the address book, the application automatically hid without closing entirely. In Lion, the same action closes the application so every time I need to use it, the address book has to reopen and reboot. Is there a way to change my preferences so the application hides instead of closing?

I have to keep a number of documents and other files minimized, which really crowds my dock. I'd rather be able to hide applications like calendar (which hides without an issue) and address book. I'm not sure why apple made this change. Most of the other appliations work this way—hiding when you hit the red button. I've been minimizing, but finding it a cumbersome way to use the application.
