Merging Projects in RoboHelp 8

I've never merged projects before so this is probably user
error, but when I follow the steps from the Adobe help system for
merging projects in RoboHelp 8, generate the project, and then view
it my merged project is not present. This is what I did:
(1) Created a generic project (documentation that we reuse in
all help systems)
(2) Created the client project (documentation that's specific
to this client's help system)
(3) From the Client Project in the TOC pod, I clicked the New
Merged Project icon
(4) This is a WebHelp Pro project so I selected the
FlashHelp/WebHelp/Adobe AIR tab
(5) I browsed for the generic project (located in a seperate
folder)
(6) I clicked OK
(7) The generic project name showed up in the TOC
(8) I generated the project like normal
(9) I clicked View Results and the only stuff that's there is
just the stuff from the client project. Nothing from the generic
project is available.
Everything that I read says that merged project doesn't show
up until the project is published. I guess with the way we do work
I don't understand the difference between generating and
publishing. What happens is that I generate the project, zip the
WebHelp Pro folder, email it to a developer or put it in a shared
drive depending on the client and then the developer attached the
files to the system. To call the correct screen, I have to include
a HTM for every single screen (wfm) in the application. The
application calls the screen name with the same HTM name which
displays a screen help page for that particular screen and then the
user can use the navigation (TOC or search or links) to find the
help topics they're looking for. I doubt this is the "best" way to
do this, but I'm working with developers on a 12 hour time
difference and this is how they requested the files. Point being --
there is no "publishing" step according to my understanding of
publishing. I know there is a server somewhere because the actually
application we build is on a server, but I don't know the technical
aspects about how my HTM files I create get onto that server and
display online.
Can anyone help me?

Actually, I had generated all the child project previously,
but what I did wrong is that I didn't create a folder for the
child. It looks like in the table of contents, you actually have to
include a separate folder for the mergedProject to go into. I just
called it the same thing that I called the child project. For
example "Global Features." You can't just have the mergedProject go
into the table of contents without it being in a folder (normally).
That said, I did find a way to get it in there before I found this
solution. I did all the steps that Peter Grainge had suggested,
then I copied and pasted the !SSL folder from where the child
project was saved into the mergedProject folder of the parent
project. That's basically what RoboHelp does anyway, but doing it
manually allows for you not to have to create a folder in the table
of contents -- just provides a different navigation to the same
thing.

    I created a merged project.
    I created a master/parent project.
I added the children rreferences in the parent TOC using the new merged button.
    I published the parent project.
I published all the children (in the parent merged project folder).
I generated the parent project again for webhelp, then click view results.
The parent project displays with the TOC  (children),  BUT as soon as I click Allow Blocked content, the TOC disappears (first topic is blank).
I have created all projects files locally. The children (when viewed independency) work fine.
I have deleted and started over 3 times with the same issue. I contacted Adobe Support, but they could not help.
Any idea o what might be the issue or how to resolve this problem.
    Thanks!
    Kim

First of all try moving the project so that the path is shorter. Create a folder like C:\RhMerge.
Second, I notice your path has spaces showing in the browser. Browser addresses substitute %20 so I am not sure how you have managed that. However the demo does not have spaces unless you have buried it somewhere that does.
Also please try Firefox as well.
Post back if still not resolved or to tell us what fixed it.

  • Merged Projects in Robohelp 10

When I publish my master project in IE(8 or 9) using Robohelp 10, the child projects do not appear in the TOC. However, if I open the published master project in Mozilla Firefox, the child projects do appear. My office only supports IE. Is there a solution for this?

In IE is the yellow information bar appearing? If so, enable ActiveX.

  • How can I include merged projects in the printed documentation?

I have a master project with several merged projects. This works splendid with online documentation, but when I am asked to provide a printed version, it seems I have to create separate documents for each merged project.
Is there any setting or fix that enables print also of merged projects and topics when I create printed documentation?
Pretty please with sugar on top :-)

Hm - there is a contract with the customer, saying that he wants documentation both as word and pdf, and as we now aim at only writing online documentation, these tasks create extra work, as we are delivering updates each month
But yes - two beasts, where only chm is actually needed we think.

    Hi there
I'm a bit curious as to the reasoning behind your "persuation process for using chm-files only".
CHM files and printed documentation are two entirely different beasts.

  • Print document with merged project

    I´m using RoboHelp 7.
I have a main project which merges to other projects. When I
print documentation to a Word file I'd like the merged projects to
automatically integrate in the main document, i.e. I'd like to
print one doc file that integrates both the main project and the
    merged projects. Thanks in advance.

Can't be done garcia3000 as there is nowhere for a RH project
to know where the master word file is located. The best you can do
is create all the word files and cut/paste the content into the
    master project's word file.

  • Combining Projects in RoboHelp v5

I have two projects in RoboHelp 5 that I need to combine, in order to move them into Flare as one project. Can that be done in RH5?
The help only refers to merging projects when compiling and that's not what I need. I actually need to combine the source files into one project and hopefully keep indexes, etc. intact.
Can someone point me in the right direction for information or confirm whether this can actually be accomplished?

    Hi again
When you import, note that you are able to import more than a single file at a time.
And sure, there is usually always more than a single way to do anything. What I offered is the "RoboHelp" way. If you are willing to roll up your sleeves and get your hands dirty, you could manipulate things by copying files and editing some other files. For example, create an HTML Help (CHM) project in RoboHelp. Then compile it so you get an updated .HHP file. This is the master control file used by the Microsoft HTML Help compiler. You could then close the RoboHelp application and make some edits to the HHP file to include the additional topics. Once you are fairly certain you have them all combined, you create a RoboHelp project by pointing at the HHP file. You could then port that to Flare.

  • Search and index functions don't work with merged projects

Until this morning, the search and index functions in my RoboHelp project worked okay; I have one Main project into which I have merged more than three dozen sub-projects.  About an hour ago, I created a new sub-project and merged it into the Main project; now, it's as if the topics in my merged projects don't exist.
    Any suggestions?
    thanks,
    Lon

So when you open the merge you see all the content, it is just the search and index not working. This must be merged CHMs as you are talking about a Favourites tab so maybe your other comment is relevant. My understanding of merged CHMs is that you do not want spaces in file names, that could be the problem.

  • Can't link to projects in merge projects - RH8

I generated my merged file in RH8. However, I can't link between the merged projects.
I accesss the parent project and then click the link and successfully access the child1 project. Then I click the link in child 1 to go back to the parent and it doesn't work. I get the message that Explorer cannot display the web page.
All my files are on my C drive and I checked the links and they look ok.
Also, when I allow blocked content, I get two bars at the top of the window with the Contents, Index and Search instead of the usual one.
    Any help is appreciated.
    Thank you.

Let's say you have a project that is located in the directory c:\Source\Project directory. Inside the project you have two folders called (FolderA and FolderB) with topic1 and topic2 in folder A and topic3 and topic4 in folder B. If you link from topic1 to topic 3, the link path added by RH is "foldera/topic3.htm". This is a relative path to a topic inside the project. If the project folder is moved, the link will still work provided none of the overall project folder/file structure is changed.
The generated output - although it is by default output to the !SSL!\Webhelp folder - is not inside the project. You can link to it but if it or the project source files are moved, it run the risk of broken links. If all you are doing is trying to link to another topic in the same help project, use the approcah I have outlined above.

  • Merged Projects on a shared drive

I have a merged project and it's currently saved to a shared drive, as you probably already know my projects run EXTREMELY slow.  Is there a way around this?  What we want is to have the project saved on a shared drive where multiple authors can save to.  Any suggestions?

    Hi there

Not sure how I'd know that, but in any case the universal equation goes like this:
    RoboHelp Project on a network = S L O W (and hazardous to the project's health)
If you really need collaboration, you need to investigate a Source Control system. (RoboSource Control, PVCS, StarTeam, Visual Source Safe, etc.)

  • Going from single project to merged projects

    Hello, again,
We have software that consists of several individual
applications integrated into one big web-based system. (For
example, if it were ABC Financial System, it might consist of an
"Accounts Receivable" application, an "Accounts Payable"
application, a "General Ledger" application, and so on, all
    integrated into one package.)
Currently, I'm working on a Robohelp Webhelp project for one
of the applications. The project is expected to provide
screen-level help. It'll be a while before the second (and third
    and fourth) project is done.
Once we have multiple projects, we will want to merge them
into one big help file--accessible separately from the screen-level
help--that will allow the users to access help for any application
    in the system.
Question: Do I just generate my first project, put it into
production as a single project, and then later, when I have
multiple projects, add in a separate merge task to achieve the
merged projects file? That is, there's no special set-up required
    for each project
now if I'm planning to add a merged file down the road?
Just checking--I haven't had to do all this from scratch
    before.
    Thanks very much.
    Lori

What you want to do is create a parent and one child now. See
the topic on my site about merged webhelp.
Then you can work on creating the other projects quite
separately. When you want to integrate them, just go back to the
parent and add the references to the child projects.
You can add any project to a merge at any time. You don't
have to warn the child that one day it might get put in a merge.

  • RH8 - Publishing Merged Projects with AIR Browserbased Help

    Hello,
i have one master project with 5 subprojects. When i make an Output with Adobe Air "Browserbased Help" is the preview ok, all tables of Content from all projects are included.
When i publish it to our webserver i first got a grey screen with an loading error.
I discovered that the link in the start site  to the included file ac_oetags.js is incorrect because of upper and lower case writing. When i change the link, the site appeared correctly - but unfortunately only with the table of content of the main project.
Is it possible to merge Projects with Browserbased Help?
Has anybody an idea what went wrong?
    Thanks for your support!
    Steffan

In the Start Page field you define where you want to generate the help.
If you click the Server settings you define where you want to publish.
When you publish the parent it goes to \\servername\myrobohelp and it creates a folder called mergedProjects and subfolders for each child.
When you publish the children, your Server setting must point to those subfolders.
Does that clarify? If not, please add some screenshot using the camera icon so that the images are in the post as above.

  • Not new; merged projects with separate TOC and indices

As it turns out, I have three projects that will need to be
    created:
    Folder (1) for Admin users:
    Administration
    User Management
    Users (General Contents)
    Folder (2) for Approver/PM users:
    User Management
    Users (General Contents)
    Folder (3) for Regular users:
    Users (General Contents)
I'm unsure whether, in RH6, I will be able to generate
separate TOC and indices. Can someone tell me whether there's a
best approach in order to enable this functionality?
    Regards,
    Sharon

OK. Of course, nothing could be that easy, now can it? lol. I
have managed to create the structure as Peter has defined it, and
for the most part, things are looking good. I do, of course, still
have a few questions I'd like to ask before I proceed:
    1. When Peter suggests I put the [Parent (No Content)] into
each of the three folders for the administrators to use on the
server, what exactly does the Parent content entail?
    2. I'd like to understand better the difference between the
default topic and the start page, and how it works structurally. I
started by generating each of the child folders with the start page
(example: Intro.htm), but realized that using index.htm was
important not only for the parent, but for each of the child
projects that I set up. I just don't understand WHY it works that
    way.
    3. I set up Books in the TOC and used the Merged Help under
each book which, of course, when generated, display books within
books. Can I just move the projects and delete the Books
altogether? This may be obvious, but I want to make sure I'm not
undoing something I'm unaware of undoing (if that makes any sense
    at all).
    4. The server will be a Linux box; I have checked off the Use
Lowercase checkbox when generating all. Is there anything else I
should be doing to keep problems to a minimum?
    5. Last but not least (if you've made it this far), I'd like
to know if it is any easier for the administrator, or myself, in
the long run, to be using RoboHelp 8. Because this looks like it
will be an ongoing project for at least five years, I want to make
sure I am working in the smartest way I can.
Thank you, to those who respond. I know I am asking for a lot
of information, because this is my first merged project. Any
assistance you can provide would be greatly appreciated.
    Regards,
    Sharon

  • Merged project & books

Thanks again to all who have been helping me along with my
    merge project.
The situation so far: I've managed to merge the project I
wanted (let's call it "2008-09") into the currently running project
(call it "Original"), and was even able to create a book with the
    correct contents.
However, I wanted to add another book (there will be many
more) and make a change or two to 2008-09. Problem is, RoboHelp is
not creating that additional book, nor is it accepting the changes
I made to the 2008-09 topics. On its own, 2008-09 looks good ...
takes changes, creates books, etc. I compile it, then compile
Original ... but I get bupkis.
What (else) am I doing wrong .. or not doing at all?
    thanx!
    Lon

Just to cover the obvious bases...
Are all the chm files being compiled into the same folder? If
not, make sure you copy them all in to the same place after you
    compile.

  • Unmerging merged projects

I inherited a merged help system created using RH 8 that has 40 merged projects, about 3,000 total topics, with several of the merged projects containing about 5 topics.  Since I will be the only technical writer maintaining the project, I would prefer to re-combine the projects into one project.  Is there an easy way to do this?  Thanks!

There's nothing difficult about it, apart from the ***** ache.
You have to import all the topics into one project, fix all the links, rework the TOC, index and glossary etc. Getting the idea?
It seems odd to create a project with just five topics unless there is a very good reason. Are you sure you are familiar enough with what you have inherited to be entirely sure your predecessor didn't have some reason.
3,000 topics in one project should be OK but try to avoid too many in any one folder. If you also have lots of images then test things as you go. I have had more than 3,000 topics in a project but I have also seen people have issues with a smaller number but a high number of images (into four figures).
Perhaps do it in stages still having a merge but with fewer projects, see how that goes for a while and then amalgamate more.

  • Merge projects in RH 7

    Hi,
I have three separate projects created in RH7. I want to merge all this projects, yet retain the project wise folder structure so that its easy to manage. Is there an option to import / merge projects in RH7? Or if there is a better way to manage / handle my projects, suggestions are very welcome.
    Thanks.

    Hi there
In addition to what Colum asked I have another question.
Sometimes we see folks speak of Merging and meaning something other than what we immediately think. There are generally two schools of thought here.
You say Merging, but you really mean you wish to Combine two or more projects so you edit them as one large project. Then create a single help system from that.
You say Merging and you really do mean it in the sense we would understand it. You wish to maintain editing different projects that are each creating individual help systems. They are Merged when the user views them and presented as a single help system to the user. But to you, you are still editing and maintaining individual help systems.
Which is it you mean here? 1 or 2?
