  • Operations on file: Deleting and get size

    Hi,
I'm triying to delete a file. I use the following code:
    File found = new File (directoryOutputFileWriter+f);
boolean deleted = found.delete();But when I execute it the boolean deleted it's always false and the file is not deleted.
Then I try to get the size of another file in this way:
    File produced = new File(directoryOutputFileWriter+file[0]);
long size = produced.length();but I receive a null value (the file exists and its dimension is over 0 of course).
    Why?
    How can I solve?
    Thanks, bye bye.

    Hello,
in my experience the absolute #1 source of astonishment with file operations is loose manual checking (mistyping or misreading).
I suggest you use those traces:
    File found = new File (directoryOutputFileWriter+f);
    System.out.println("File path is"+found.getAbsolutePath());
    System.out.println("Does this file exists? "+found.exists());
System.out.println("Is this file really a file? "+found.isFile()); // You may not be able to delete a directory on all platforms
System.out.println("Is this file deleted now? "+found.delete());#2 is developers not reading the javadoc (that states that delete may not succeed), but I acknowledge you have read it, as you're investigating why it hasn't, and not complaining that it has.
#3 is people overlooking OS-specific file management. E.g. Unix-Linux-Window file permissions management all may let you read a file but not delete it (with the unices having a richer set of combinations than windows). The rules for directory deletion are different between Unices and Windows. Etc...

@Joachim: nice catch! Loose manual checking indeed (both on my part and on OP's)...

  • X2 Multiple message deleting and archiving

I recently bought Nokia X2 which disappoints me a lot.
There are 500 messages in my INBOX and i want to delete 400 messages but there is no mark option to select multiple messages.
I want to save another 100 messages in ARCHIVE folder. Each time I have to go through the options INBOX /OPTIONS /ARCHIVE which is very irritating. Moreover there is no folder creation in messages ARCHIVE folder, which is big disappointment.
Battery charging to taking tooooo much time and draining in very very short time in normal use(1.30-2h talk time+30min music+20-30 messages my battery goes to single point).
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    menu...select messaging...select more.....choose delete msg's..
then select by msg or by folder........choose the folder or msg you want to delete
charging time on this model is slower than other models
If  i have helped at all a click on the white star below would be nice thanks.

  • Undo retention and tablespace size

    Situation:
Oracle 9.2.0.1 configured with undo_retention=10800 but with a 2GB size limit for the
    undo tablespace with no autoextend.
As far as i know, with 10800 the undo tablespace could grown to around 10GB
but i'm not sure tho. I REALLY need to know if this is clearly a wrong setup (imho it
is) or could be an acceptable situation in some scenarios.
    Thanks heap in advance.

Oracle 9.2.0.1 configured with undo_retention=108003 Hours? This is realy huge undo retention time.
with a 2GB size limit for the undo tablespace with no autoextend. You probably mean datafile not tablespace.
You don't need resize existing datafile you could just add another datafile to undo tablespace.

  • Inbox Message Deletions and Contact Sorting

I have owned my Verizon Fascinate for a week now and overall I am very pleased with its performance. The display is great and I have downloaded several GPS apps which are terrific.
Couple of issues have cropped up which I have not been able to solve:
POP3 Email. Vanishing inbox. I have found that when an email is deleted from the POP3 server, it deletes from the Inbox the next time you sync the Fascinate. I would have thought that once an email loaded ion to the phone it would stay on the phone until specifically deleted. This is how Outlook and other email programs work.
POP3 Email. Folders. Haven't found a way to create additional folders beyond the standard Inbox, Sent, Outbox, Draft, and Deleted.
Contacts. Names sort by first name. Would prefer to have names sorted by last name?
Am I missing something or are there solutions?
    Thanks

The sorting contacts by last name is not an option on the fascinate. If we delete the mails on the computer (server) we cannot view the emails on the device. According to database, we cannot create additional folders on the device in 'Email' application.

  • How can I display the read messages count and total size of a folder?

Extra Folder Columns 1.1.5 is not compatible with Thunderbird 31.3.0.

Log into your account and to the right of the phone photo you will see usage details in blue then on the next screen pick the phone on the account you want to see the details for and under that you can click to see eveyrthing in detail.  Mary

Iphone 5 - I am trying to delete message threads and once I do, I go to text someone else and it won't send. HELP? I just don't want those messages on my phone anymore. I have tried to restart my phone but when I do, the "deleted" threads show back up on my phone. I use iOS 7.1.

    Hello Makayla,
It sounds like you're deleted message threads keep coming back after you restart the devie. I recommend starting by quitting all the running apps on your phone:
iOS: Force an app to close
    Double-click the Home button.
Swipe left or right until you have located the app you wish to close.
Swipe the app up to close it.
When you have done that restart the device and test the issue again:
iOS: Turning off and on (restarting) and resetting
If the issue persists, backup your device to iTunes and then restore it as a new device and verify that it works.
How to erase your iOS device and then set it up as a new device or restore it from backups
If it does, then restore your backup to either verify it still works and the software just needed reinstalled, or isolate the issue to the backup file itself.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.

    Sterling

I am doing this beacuse in my space on my phone my doucments and data are taking up 9GB of space, and i don't know why other than in my phone it says messages are taking up 8GB or so. I am running ios 7.0. I have synced my phone with itunes, backed up, reboots after deleting the texts, they never vanish, i have even restored from itunes and restored from a backup that didn't include the texts after i deleted them.

I cannot open any of my Hotmail e-mail messages, delete them, look at other old ones, nothing. All I can do is sign in and that is it. I have tried deleting cookies, clearing the cache space, rebooting the computer, rebooting my internet connection, refreshing the page several times. Here is the thing. I can get on the page and read my mail, etc. like normal if i use Internet Explorer, but I prefer Firefox. The problem is Firefox and I rely on my e-mail for job purposes. I hope someone can help me!!!

Nevermind. I finally found a third party answer and will post it for anyone else with my problem.

  • HELP!  I tunes wouldn't update so I tried to delete and reinstall.  I keep getting a message stating the installation source for this product is not available.  Verify that the source exists and that you can access it.  please help!!

Help!  Itunes wouldn't update so I tried to delet and reinstall.  I keep getting a message: The instillation source for this product is not available.  Verify that the source exists and that you can access it.  I also get this message:  The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable.  Click OK to try again, or enter an alternate path to a folder containing the installation package 'iTunes64.msi' in the box below.  Help I have no idea what that means or how to fix it.

    (1) Download the Windows Installer CleanUp utility installer file (msicuu2.exe) from the following Major Geeks page (use one of the links under the "DOWNLOAD LOCATIONS" thingy on the Major Geeks page). Here's a screenshot showing the particular links on the page that you should be clicking:
After clicking one of the circled links, you should be taken to another page, and after a few seconds you should see a download dialog appear for the msicuu2.exe file. Here's a screenshot of what it looks like for me in Firefox:
Choose to Save the file. If the dialog box does not appear for you, click the link on the page that says "CLICK HERE IF IT DOES NOT". Here's a screenshot of the page with the relevant link circled:
When the dialog appears, choose to save the file.
    (2) Go to the Downloads area for your Web browser. Doubleclick the msicuu2.exe file and follow the prompts to install the Windows Installer CleanUp utility. (If you're on a Windows Vista or Windows 7 system and you get a Code 800A0046 error message when doubleclicking the msicuu2.exe file, try instead right-clicking on the msicuu2.exe file and selecting "Run as administrator".)
    (3) In your Start menu click All Programs and then click Windows Install Clean Up. The Windows Installer CleanUp utility window appears, listing software that is currently installed on your computer.
    (4) In the list of programs that appears in CleanUp, select any iTunes entries and click "Remove", as per the following screenshot:
    (5) Quit out of CleanUp, restart the PC and try another iTunes install. Does it go through properly this time?

  • Tablespaces and block size in Data Warehouse

We are preparing to implement Data Warehouse on Oracle 11g R2 and currently I am trying to set up some storage strategy - unfortunately I have very little experience with that. The question is what are general advices in such considerations according table spaces and block size? I made some research and it is hard to find some clear answer, there are resources advising that block size is not important and can be left small (8 KB), others state that it is crucial and should be the biggest possible (64KB). The other thing is what part of data should be placed where? Many resources state that keeping indexes apart from its data is a myth and a bad practice as it may lead to decrease of performance, others say that although there is no performance benefit, index table spaces do not need to be backed up and thats why it should be split. The next idea is to have separate table spaces for big tables, small tables, tables accessed frequently and infrequently. How should I organize partitions in terms of table spaces? Is it a good idea to have "old" data (read only) partitions on separate table spaces?
Any help highly appreciated and thank you in advance.

The question is what are general advices in such considerations according table spaces and block size? If you need to ask about block sizes, use the default (i.e. 8KB).
I made some research and it is hard to find some clear answer, But if you get contradictory advice from this forum, how would you decide which bits to follow ?
A couple of sensible guidelines when researching on the internet - look for material that is datestamped with recent dates (last couple of years), or references recent - or at least relevant - versions of Oracle. Give preference to material that explains WHY an idea might be relevant, give greater preference to material that DEMONSTRATES why an idea might be relevant. Check that any explanations and demonstrations are relevant to your planned setup.
The other thing is what part of data should be placed where? Is it a good idea to have "old" data (read only) partitions on separate table spaces?
It is often convenient, and sometimes very important, to separate data into different tablespaces based on some aspect of functionality. The performance thing was mooted (badly) in an era when discs were small and (disk) partitions were hard; but all your other examples of why to split are potentially valid for administrative. Big/Small, table/index, old/new, read-only/read-write, fact/dimension etc.
For data warehouses a fairly common practice is to identify some sort of aging pattern for the data, and try to pick a boundary that allows you to partition data so that a large fraction of the data can eventually be made read-only: using tablespaces to mark time-boundaries can be a great convenience - note that the tablespace boundary need not match the partition boudary - e.g. daily partitions in a monthly tablespace. If you take this type of approach, you might have a "working" tablespace for recent data, and then copy the older data to "time-specific" tablespace, packing it and making it readonly as you do so.
Tablespaces are (broadly speaking) about strategy, not performance. (Temporary tablespaces / tablespace groups are probably the exception to this thought.)

  • My mail is set up but when I touch the mail icon the screen is blank with a message saying 'no message selected' then goes straight to home page. I have rebooted, deleted and reloaded my email account but nothing is working.

My mail is set up and it comes up with 75 messages received but when I click onto the mail icon the page is blank(White) with the message 'no message selected' and then goes to the homepage.  I have rebooted the iPad and deleted and reloaded my mail account but nothing works.

The app is crashing for some reason - maybe an email with a very large attachment or some crappy spam email is messing things up. Quit the mail app.
Go to the home screen first by tapping the home button. Quit/close mail by double tapping the home button and the task bar will appear with all of you recent/open apps displayed at the bottom. Tap and hold down on the mail app icon until it begins to wiggle. Tap the minus sign in the upper left corner to close it.  Restart the iPad. Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.
If mail still crashes, go to your webmail in a browser and see if you have an email in there that might be causing a problem and delete it. Then try the app again. If necessary, quit the app, restart the iPad and then try again.
If that doesnt help, try a reset. Reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.

  • IPad won't open iBooks - error message that book isn't formatted correctly, iPad is fully updated and I've tried deleting and reloading iBooks - only thing that has happened between when it used to work and now doesn't is that I took the iPad to singapore

iPad used to open iBooks purchased off iTunes no problems but since I took my iPad overseas on holiday it no longer opens iBooks - they appear to download ok but when I tap to open the book I get an error message saying the book isn't formatted correctly or is in a format that iBooks doesn't recognise. I have tried
    - deleting and reloading iBooks
    - making all updates have been done
    - turning on and off airplane mode
    And still have the problems
Did ask iTunes help but so far no joy - appreciate help please

Ok, I got the 1.3/1.4 thing straight now. There was a java.exe in System32 that I now see the PATH was calling first.
And in the TextPad version of the problem, I was curious -- I don't remember setting the specification of the executable called by the Run Tool button, but I must have at some point. I uninstalled the program and reinstalled it and it created a default button that apparently points to what it's supposed to point to, since it now works and runs my program OK.
Still, I wonder how it can be that explicitly directing the button to C:\j2sdk1.4.0\bin\java.exe makes TextPad's Command Results Window say "NoClassDefFoundError"
I'm up and working now, but if anyone has a clue I can learn from on the TextPad issue, thanks

What version of iTunes are you using?  The error you references seems to be connected with iTunes 9.0.4.  That version of iTunes is not compatible with iOS 6. You need to update to the current version of iTunes.
