Message List Sorting and Finding

In mail, I frequently go to my Sent items to search for an email that I sent to a particular person.  I sort by Sender and then start to type the person's name but it seems that it jumps to the Subject that starts with those characters, not the sender's name.  Anyone know why this is and how to fix/get around this?

A) Use a java.util.Set
B) Create a java.util.List from the Set and use Collections.sort()

  • Vanishing message lists, stalls, and a whole mess of trouble!

Out of all my apps, MAIL was the most reliable & stable of the lot.
Then two days ago, it began behaving el'stupido! This is going to be somewhat thorough, so please bear with me:
1 ''Get Mail'' was taking forever to complete its first retrieval. So a force quit was necessary. Reopened MAIL, and still the retrieval seemed to stall about halfway through (15 of 35 retrieved from server). Checked with my webserver and none of the emails had attachments or anything like that.
2 Messages in my Inbox and other folders had vanished. Tried ''Rebuilding'' to no avail. My Inbox reads (at the top of the MAIL window) ''0 messages, 4 unread''. I know there are about seven ''read messages'' in my Inbox. I go to my Finder~User~Library~Mail~ and all the messages are there. Opening each message file from the Finder is no problem.
3 Used JunkMatcher to sort my HAM from SPAM prior to this weirdness and it did its job well. I thought this might've caused the screw-up. So I trashed it. Still no change in MAIL's behavior.
4 Searched other forums and came across a partial solution: trashing the Font Cache's & Mail Cache's contents; restarting; and it seemed to be working. Some folders needed ''Rebuilding'', then ...
5 ... I switch to another app, return to MAIL and choose another mailbox and it reads ''0 messages''. Check other mailboxes and ''0 messages''. Here we go again!
The total contents of the Mail folder is less than 190Mb. I have a copy of Entourage sitting on my shelf as a "MAIL, why have you forsaken me!" back-up solution. I want to remain Microsoft-free, but if I can't find a solution soon (without reinstalling Tiger) I may have to sign on with the devil!
    Have a marvy day!

Not resolved really ... did a clean install. That fixed it...

  • Mail Message list sort order for Applescript in ML

    Hi All,
I recently upgraded from SL to ML. I'm having a few issues with an applescript i use to flag/unflag emails for later handling.
Basically, the script does the following:
    - get the message list from one of the inboxes/smartboxes. These are ordered by time and grouped by thread.
    - compare one message with the next one
    - if some criterias are equal (thread ID, subject, ...) then the second email is unflagged
    - repeat until end of list.
It was working fine in SL, as a result, i only had the first email of threads with a flag, so the others could be forgotten.
In ML, it looks like even though the emails are displayed in a specific order (date/thread), using
    messages of first message viewer
does not fetch the messages in the same order, so matching cannot happen.
Is this the expected behavior in ML ? Is there anyway to have the list of messaged sorted as displayed ?
    Thanks
    jm

I found a workaround, though there must be something neater.
I added this before my script
    tell application "System Events"
              tell process "Mail"
                        tell menu bar 1
                                  tell menu bar item "View"
                                            tell menu "View"
                                                      tell menu item "Sort By"
                                                                tell menu "Sort By"
                                                                          click menu item "Subject"
                                                                end tell
                                                      end tell
                                            end tell
                                  end tell
                        end tell
              end tell
    end tell
then the same except "Date" instead of "Subject".
My script does what i want now.

  • Sort and Find by BP Name, not BP Code

When users look up a Business Partner, they want to search on BP Name, not BP Code. For example, the desired application behavior is that the user could enter a '*'  and Enter in the BP Name box on the Business Partner master. The window 'List of Business Partners' would open, automatically sorted by BP Name. The user could immediately start typing in the Find box and drill down through the alphabetized list to the BP Name she wants.
To make this happen, in the window 'List of Business Partners' I have the BP Name in the first column, Sort Order is Ascending. But when the window opens, it is sorted by the 3rd column, BP Code, even though the red sort triangle appears in the BP Name column header. Users have to double-click on the BP Name column header to get the list to sort by BP Name. Then they can start typing in the Find box to get to the BP Name they want.

    Gordon,
Not sure I get you. After reading your post I tried:
    Open List of Business Partners.
    Open form settings for same.
    Click Restore Defaults.
Got rid of BP Name in field 2 by changing to show BP Type. Click Update.
Change field 1 to be BP Name. Sort order is Ascending.
    Clicked Update.
Now even though BP Code isn't on the List, the list still opens sorted in BP Code order.

    Any other advice?

  • Message list layout - two rows like Apple Mail

I am using a Mac. In Thunderbird I am using the Vertical View with the Folder Pane, Message List Pane, and message pane. I would like the Message List Pane to have two-three rows for each message. I cannot find a way to have it display like that. I want it to look similar to the way Mac Mail displays the message list with the Sender and date on first row. Subject on second row and third row to show the beginning sentence of the message.
Is there a way to do this in Thunderbird or using an extension for Thunderbird? I really want to completely move everything over to Thunderbird, but I do like the Message List displayed this way.
It would look something like this:
Whoever it is From Date of message
This is the Subject of the Message
This message is about the message list pane.
Does anyone know a way to accomplish this?? Thank you!

Thunderbird has no capability to display the list on two lines. No there is no add-on.

  • Aspect Ratio Sort and Export (File Naming)

When I crop my photos, I sometimes find that some photos work best in the 4x5/8x10 crop and others in a 2x3/4x6 aspect ratio.
Issue #1) How can I sort and find all of my images with a specific aspect ratio?
When in the Library module and setting up a filter (ctrl+f), I don't see any way to filter and sort out my aspect ratio. In the "Metadata - Label" filter fields, there is an "Aspect Ratio" value however the only options are Portrait and Landscape. (more of a photo/page layout than 'aspect ratio' to me)
** Feature Request: Please add "Aspect Ratio" options (just as presented with "r" is pressed for resize) in the Library Filter Metadata. **
Issue #2) How can I include the aspect ratio of the image (e.g. 4x5) in the exported file name?
I don't see any way to to do this either, so I have to manually find all of the images with the same aspect ratio first, then set a Custom Name field for export and export each ratio at a time.
** Feature Request: Please add "Aspect Ratio" options to the file naming fields available for selection when exporting images.  Values like "4x5" and "4x6" would be great to be able to include in the filename of my images.

    Brian

  • If I delete a message using delete key, AND the "Find in this message" box is open, should the focus switch to the search box, or remain in the message list?

If the "Find in this message" search box has been left open, but I have selected a message in the message pane, if I use the delete key to delete the current message, the focus moves to the "Find" box. It took me a while to figure out why the focus did not remain in the message list so I could delete the next message. I can regain the desired behavior by closing the search box, but it would be nice to not need to. This is on a Windows 7 OS. I should check to see how it behaves on a Linux box.

    Hi,
    for the Points
Sometime I think I would like it if I could delete an iMessage completely.
Other times when reading them on my iPhone I wish to leave them until I can answer them with something that is on my Mac.
It seems that as a device or a Mac that is off line can "catch up" on iMessages sent within a few hours would suggest that the iMessages are held on the server for a period.
It would be handy for different levels of "deletion".

  • List view sorting in Finder is sluggish, rendering it practically unuseable

I've noticed that whenever I set a Finder window to list view and then try and sort the different columns by ascending or descending order, the sorting often doesn't work or works but only after some time, typically 15–30 seconds. This is not acceptable on a new and supposedly fast iMac, or really any Mac. I have a MacBook Air running Mavericks and the Finder is not sluggish at all on that computer. I thought maybe this was due to one of the following:
OS X Mavericks bug (but then why don't I experience this on the MacBook Air?)
    Software conflict of some sort
Odd preference that is buried deep in my preferences somewhere
The maddening thing is that it does work sometimes, but other times it doesn't work and then a little while later it starts working. The unreliability is absolutely crazy making. It indicates to me some sort of software issue (either a conflict with some software that I have or an OS bug). I should mention here that I have Dropbox installed, and I saw on some other forum post that there were some Finder related issues with Dropbox, so maybe it has something to do with that (but again, the MacBook Air also has Dropbox installed and no sluggish Finder sorting there).
Or, I noticed that the list view columns in Mavericks appears greyed out, and this was not the case with OS X Lion (my previous Mac had Lion, and the Finder sorting was rock solid). This leads me to an alternate theory that some preference somewhere is set incorrectly, but this doesn't explain the unreliability.
I have double-checked the obvious things:
Finder View options (I have selected Arrange by: None and Sort by: Name as the defaults for list view, as well ticked the columns to show when in list view, and yes, I'm not calculating file size)
Power Nap is off (someone somewhere on the interwebs mentioned that Power Nap makes the Finder go to sleep and this could explain the delays in sorting)
Has anyone else had a problem with sorting in list view? I use this quite a bit to find the most recent files in sometimes very long lists of files. It's an essential file management tool for me and I'm hoping there is a relatively easy fix.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your documents or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this behavior; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Please take this step regardless of the results of Step 1.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2.

  • Is there a way to have Finder list folders and documents in alphabetical order?

Finder keeps changing the order of folders and documents.  Is there a way to have everythning remain in alphabetical order?  The way it works now makes it difficult to find a specific folder or doc from a long list.

In the Finder click the list icon and then sort by name. Is this what you mean?

  • IMAP message list and search missing messages

I access an IMAP server from my MacBook and iPad. When I look in folders on the server other than the inbox, the MacBook shows all the messages but the iPad is missing many. When I compare the two, the iPad has all, one-for-one, for the past four days or so. Before that, the list on the iPad is spotty. I have touched the update and download more messages buttons.
Searching on the iPad also misses messages, but different ones. I can search on the iPad for messages I see on the Mac, and sometimes find them, although they don't show up in the message list (for example, the message from about five days ago, immediately before the last message which shows up consistently on both the Mac and iPad). In other cases, I can do a search on the Mac and iPad, and the Mac will show more hits from the search than the iPad.
So, mail on the iPad, at least with an IMAP server, is unreliable. Is this well-known? Will this improve on iOS 4.2?
    Thanks for your help,
    ==Leonard

I did an experiment with the IMAP server I have which stores the mail in mbox format in the home directory of the Linux server I have a login to. I can drag messages in any order I want from the inbox to a folder, and can verify that in the mbox file, they are stored in the order I dragged them in. Yes, those messages are shown in the iPad message list in chronological order, regardless of the order I dragged them into the folder.
But, earlier messages are not shown in the iPad message list in the order they are in the mbox file or chronological order. Well, they are in chronological order, but with big time gaps. For example, the iPad shows a message from April 6 followed by April 1. But, I can see on my Mac that I have many messages between April 1 and 6. They do not appear on the iPad.
Ah, I think I see something. Some of the messages in this mailbox are log files with timestamps at the beginning of the line. The iPad mail program appears to be taking the time from the first line in the body of the message rather than the timestamp in the mail message envelope.
No, it just got stranger. I selected another mailbox, and then went back to the mailbox with the log files I was looking at before and the order of messages has changed! Now there are messages from May where there were messages from April. Still might be the timestamps in the body of the message because those are the first messages shown in the list after the last non-log-file messages.
Now there are messages missing between April 30 and May 4, where I can see that the messages exist by looking in the Mac mail program. I can see that all the missing messages on the iPad are the ones for which the body starts with a timestamp.
Perhaps the iPad has trouble with an IMAP server using mbox format.
Another complication in my case is that the messages in the mbox file are not stored in the order they were received. I suspect this is because I copied them there, using Apple Mail, from previously being stored on my Mac. That is, I had all my mail On My Mac, and then selected all the messages in the folder and dragged them to the IMAP server folder. That put them into the mbox file in an unusual order. But, on the Mac, they show chronologically, regardless of the order stored in the file.
The iPad also does this, for recent messages (which don't contain those log files with timestamps), but the timestamps in the body of the message may be confusing it.

  • Mail message list and preview pane no longer in sync?

I'm having a strange problem with Mail. When I select certain messages in the message list, a completely different message is shown in the preview pane. It seems to be a problem with specific message, perhaps they all arrived with in a few days of each other. It's predictable in that the same message always has the same heading information in the message list and causes the same message to show in the preview pane, it's just not the right message (the one that corresponds to the selected message header in the list). I'm sure I don't have to tell anyone how difficult that makes it to find anything. It happens with the effected messages regardless what mailbox or smart folder they are in.
I'm thinking I need to tell Mail to recreate some kind of header cache or something but I don't know where/how to do that. Any help would be appreciated.

have you tried to rebuild the offending mailboxes? select a specific mailbox, then go to the mail menu, mailbox>rebuild
    hope this helps
