Messages won't launch. Some library errors.

Out of the blue, Messages just stopped launching a few hours ago, not even after a restart or wakeup. At first, I was getting an abort trap for reason "6" (not sure what that is), so I deleted the app and replaced it with the one on my clone backup. Now, I get different errors. Everything else works fine except that when I tried rebooting to solve the problem, it refused to shut down, and I had to force it. Repairing my permissions did not help.

Messed up libraries? It looks like NSCFDictionary is missing its methods! I'm trying to use Pacifist to reinstall these things. It's probably not good that I'm forcibly installing 10.8.0 files on my 10.8.5 installation... Already tried AppKit, CoreFoundation, and IMCore, no luck. I can't find out which library NSCFDictionary is part of, and it's strangely missing from Apple's Cocoa reference guide. What's the best way to fix this? I'd really prefer not to have to reinstall Mountain Lion – it's tougher for me than for most people due to my setup.

Hi,
Messages needs to be matched in it's Version Number to the OS Version it should go with.
At the OS X 10.8.2 update the Messages app was changed to version 7.0.1
It will not work with version 7.0 parts from the Earlier OS.
You need to use the Restart with the CMD +R keys pressed and select Reinstalling the OS which will give you the current versions of everything.

When trying to launch Messages I get an "Internal Messages error:  There was a problem with Messages. You need to quit and open Messages again."  Messages won't launch ever since I restarted after the last Mountain Lion update to 10.8.2.  Any ideas how to fix this?

    Hi,
I would start with Repairing Permissions  (Disk Utility in Applications/Utilities)
Follow that with a PRAM reset.
    Shut down the computer.
Restart it holding down Apple/CMD ( or ⌘)+ALT( ⌥)+P+R Keys until you have heard three Start Up Bongs.

  • MacBook Pro Won't Launch Some Apps

I have a Late 2007 MacBook Pro 17" (Santa Rosa).  For the past couple of months, I cannot launch some apps including:
    - iMovie (appears with a light under the dock but the window to actually use it never comes up)
    - iDVD (crashes with window that says that it quitted unexpectedly)
    - Final Cut Express 4 (crashes instantly)
    - LiveType (acts just like Final Cut)
    - and a whole lot more.
I have tried to reinstall all of these apps but they do the same thing over and over again.  I have also reinstalled Snow Leopard after a complete wipe of the hard drive.  Actually, I have even swapped the hard drive inside the MacBook Pro, but no avail!
So I have done these things:
    1. Reinstalled all of those apps.
    2. Reset PRAM.
    3. Reinstalled Snow Leopard from wiped hard drive.
    4. Reinstalled Snow Leopard after swapping in new hard drive.
After this, I brought the computer to the Genius Bar.  They've also reinstalled Snow Leopard twice and don't know what to do.  Right now I have a half-working MacBook Pro.  I am hoping you and other people on the internet know how to fix this.  I am lucky that the 17" MacBook Pro isn't mission critical because I have just gotten a new 15" MacBook Pro to replace it, but it would be nice to have the 17" working again as a secondary computer.
    Any suggestions? Thanks!
If this helps, there is a little history about this computer - I bought it new and around the second year the graphics card died.  It was the NVIDIA GeForce 8600m with 256mb of dedicated memory.  The logic board had been replaced by Apple and the machine is just over the second year with the new logic board.  Is it time for the second logic board's graphics card to die out?

Have a go at repairing the disk (why didn't it start up, i.e. what did it do/show exactly?)
Start up from your disk, or if on lion the Recovery HD by holding the alt button at startup and selecting it, then click the arrow underneath, select your language once the window comes up and click on DiskUtility at the bottom of the list in the main window.  Then select your Macintosh HD and "repair disk".  It will tell you if it thinks the disk is ok.  If you are starting up from a disk, DiskUtililty should be at the very top (the writing) under "Utilities", not the main window, which will only let you re-install the operating system.
Questions: what operating system?  All apps or just some?  Do you know anything else helpful, like installations, deletions just prior?  Font problems?

Glad you found the answer, I was wondering what the problem was when I read the post. Sometimes you can learn the most about an application by troubleshooting.

  • I-tunes won't launch-softwareupdate.exe error

Back on 3/13, I was able to launch I-tunes, purchase and download songs and sync to my I-pod. I went away for a few days and hadn't tried to launch I-tunes until tonight. When I tried to launch I-tunes tonight, I got an immediate "software application has encountered a problem and needs to close," followed ultimately by a runtime error that forces the program to abort. The error signature says the application name is softwareupdate.exe app version 1.0.2.1. I saw some messages about launching Quicktime to rule out that it's related to the problem. I did, and it launched without error or incident. Is this an Apple Problem, a Microsoft Problem or both?

  • System Preferences Won't Launch, console "bus error"

This isn't a case of the System Preference not being found, being moved out of the Applications Folder, or anything trivial like that. System Preferences will not launch. This is a clean install of Leopard, and updated to 10.5.8. The error message in console is:
    9/1/10 3:11:45 PM com.apple.launchd74 (0x0-0x18018.com.apple.systempreferences212) Exited abnormally: Bus error
"The application System Preferences quit unexpectedly." Relaunch doesn't work.

I have exactly the same problem after having installed 10.5.8.
I had to do this after not being able to start the machine at all because of (what I believe to be) a bug with Security Update 2010-005. The Archive and Install process did not work.
This thread should be in "Using Mac OS X Leopard". I found it Googling "Exited abnormally: Bus error".

  • Itunes won't launch after installing - error

I've tried intalling and reinstalling different versions iTunes, including 7.6.2 up to the latest version. They all seem to install fine, but when I try and launch iTunes I get the following error message:
'The folder 'iTunes' cannot be found or created, and is required. The default location for this folder is inside the 'My Music' folder.'
I'm running Windows XP, with Service Pack 3 installed. Any advice from anyone?
    Thanks

    Hello
By any chance when you go to My Documents - My Music. Does the My Music folder
    1. Exist?
    2. Does it have a music note on it?
If it does so far everything looks good.
If you followed the previous articles posted earlier. I would like to recommend one last article. Which will assist with a full clean up of Apple Software and folders.
Hopefully you will only need to use this article as a last resort. Incase other options posted are not leading anywhere.

  • IPhoto 9.4.3 won't launch. iPhoto Library Upgrader doesn't help.

    I am going around in circles trying to get iPhoto 9.4.3 to launch. When I try to launch it I get the following message;
To open your library with this version of iPhoto, it first needs to be prepared.
To prepare the library, use the iPhoto Library Upgrader available from Apple.
Clicking on the Learn More button takes me to this page: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5037
After downloading the iPhoto Library Upgrader tool and launching it from the Utilities folder it simply hangs (greys out) and I have to force quit as it says that iPhoto is not reponding.
When the updater starts it says it is preparing photos from iPhoto 7. I never/rarely use iPhoto but I need it to select images for another application (iWeb).
Any idea how to get iPhoto to work? Can I just remove all the files in the iPhoto Library?
    Thx

    Hi Larry,
    As I said; I already tried the option/command procedure [holding down both keys simultaneously] and I get the same notice;
To open your library with this version of iPhoto, it first needs to be prepared.
To prepare the library, use the iPhoto Library Upgrader available from Apple.
Thanks for your suggestions but it appears you haven't read my original post where I state that I have already downloaded and tried the iPhoto Library Manager and iphoto just hangs so that I need to force quit the application.
Is there anything else that can be tried?
    Thx

  • Messages won't open, citing ContactsUI error

I just downloaded a security update (2014~005), and now my Messages app won't open. It immediately says "Messages quit unexpectedly while using the ContactsUI plug-in." Is there an easy fix for this?
    Mavericks 10.9.5

You ran a defective third-party "utility" such as "CleanMyMac" that purports to "clean up" "junk" files. What it really does is to corrupt the operating system.
The first thing you need to do is remove that software according to the developer's instructions. Never install it, or anything like it, again. Then see below.
If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data, then reinstall the OS.* You don't need to erase the startup volume, and you won't need the backup unless something goes wrong. If the system was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you may need the Apple ID and password you used.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
If you installed the Java runtime distributed by Apple and still need it, you'll have to reinstall it. The same goes for Xcode.
*The linked support article refers to OS X 10.9 ("Mavericks"), but the procedure is the same for OS X 10.7 ("Lion") and later.
