Mic 'Feedback' on GB '08

I'm a long time user of Garageband. I've got a new imac Intel 2.4 Ghz, and I've tried using both the M-Audio Firewire 1814 and the M-Audio AudioSport Quattro (USB interface) to capture vocals.
When I plug the mic in (a standard Sure mic), I get really strong signals screaming through the track: It just sounds like loud white noise, and it pushes the volume on the track into the red. You cannot hear the sound from the actual Mic, but I can hear sound through the Audio Interface's Direct Out.
I've reinstalled the drivers on both units, messed with the Mic, and done all sorts of troubleshooting, but can't seem to find a cause.
Has anyone encountered this issue, and how did you fix it?
Thanks so much,
Gordon

Are you able to isolate the cause any further?
You've likely thought of all these already, but perhaps there's one that might be helpful:
Are you able to record using the iMac's built in mic, or the line in, to verify that GB is up and running? Then, are you able to use these interfaces on another computer (I take it yes, since they probably predate your new computer)? Are you able to record with a line-level source? Are you getting the same response from both interfaces?
You've installed drivers for both interfaces. Is it possible there could be confusion at the driver level? Are you sure the interfaces are consistently selected? If you go to every place you can select the interface (Audio/MIDI setup; preferences -> sound; GB preferences), are you sure that the same selection is rippling identically through each? Is there any way to inadvertently change the sample rate in the interface that might be different from what GB thinks it's getting? Is there any routing software installed that would enable you to create virtual feedback?
Also, just to check, have you trashed preferences, repaired permissions, turned off bluetooth and airport, turned off monitoring in GB, and been a generally good person?

  • Mic Feedback

How can I take microphone feedback out of my project in FCE HD? Thanks!

You could play with the audio level control and also with the graphic equalizer filter in the areas that have feedback. Might improve it somewhat but unfortunately mic feedback is not something that can be totally fixed in post production.
Also, take a look at Sound Soap - it may help.

  • SB ZXR Mic Feedback/echoing issues!!

    Here is my setup.
    Reciever: Onkyo HT-R330
    5.1 Speakers
I am using the nice looking mic that came with the SB ZXR card and i am using DTS Encoding for my speaker setup.
Everything sounds great but my mic!!!!! i cant for the life of me get rid of the **** feedback and echoing when i test it in SB Control panel
I have tried to go into properties and lower the Mic Boost level. But this cuts my voice off in the middle of me speaking and the echoing is still there.
yes i have tried turning on Accustic echo cancellation and noise cancellation.
Ive got the mic plugged into the Mic in Jack on my Sound Card.
    HELP!!!!

okay it seems to only happen when i test the mic with my speakers on.
But i tried doing a skype test call and everything sounds fine.
Dont know why i get such horrific feedback/echoing when testing it?
im guessing its because my speakers are repeating what im saying into the mic a second time perhaps?

  • Mic feedback/popping with duet

hi. as you've guessed, i'm getting extreme feedback from my microphone and am hoping someone can help me.
i'm not the most advanced audio man in the world, so bear with me here....
i recently bought an AKG condenser microphone and have plugged it into IN-1 in Duet. i've enabled Phantom Power (the 48v box, right?) and am able to record. But whenever I do so, there's extreme feedback that sounds like popping or firewood crackling. I've toyed with the individual volumes of input 1 and so forth in the Duet mixer, but still nothing.
can anyone walk me through this?
    thank you?

the feedback is coming through the speakers......so, for example, when i record an audio track i not only hear the feedback while i'm recording but it appears on the recorded audio track as well.

  • Headset - feedback and wave for others heara

i use a headset for audio communication over my pc. But everyone i talk with can also hear my music - or other wave stuff - and his own voice.
This is weird, because i already set the mic as the recording source and even if i mute my headset over the volume control at the cable, this still happens. So, this is no speaker-to-mic feedback.
I can only turn this off by either muting the wave over the mixer or disconnecting the headset's loutspeaker cable.
please help me! This is really disturbing and i dont know what to do.

As an additional information i want to say, that it sounds like, there's some wave - or midi, if played - mixed into the mic's sound.

  • Getting sound feedback from vga conected tv

I have a macbook pro I7. I am using virtual DJ when I hook up the tvs through VGA I get feedback from the tv back through my sound card. It is a loud low hum and you can see the lines running through the tv. I have the same problem with or with out virtual dj running. PC works fine and no problems. Also if I just hook up a second monitor it works fine. Also as soon as I unplug the vga adapter all the feedback stops. any ideas?

    Adding to AOS's post:
Mic feedback happens when the mic and speaker are in close proximity and the gain is too high... you will need to use headphones on the computer's audio output so the speaker sound isn't fed back into the Mic. Or.... turn off software monitoring in Logic's audio preferences... (go with the headphones)

  • Sound Blaster Audigy SE help

Hi, I am having issues getting any kind of sound recording/mic feedback to happen at all on my computer. Orginally I was using the onboard soundcard and everything was fine. I had to reformat and after I did, I couldnt find the correct drivers for the sound card again so the recording part of the on board sound card went out. Yesterday I bought the Sound Blaster Audgiy SE sound card, hoping that with its installation, I would solve my recording input problem. To my dismay it didnt. I am wondering if anyone could help me solve this issue. Please post with anything you can to help me out. Much appreciated
    Thanks

You're not alone. I'm having the same problem. Unfortunately, nobody seems to have an answer or solution to this problem.

  • Recording voice using condenser mic and getting feedback/echo

Hi, I recently hooked up a condenser mic using a phantom power box and a Fast Track USB interface to my Mac. When I record in Garageband, I am hearing feedback during the recording and of course, playback. I also have 2 external speakers which happen to be placed on the desk in proximity to the recording mic. What can I do to eliminate the feedback/noise? I am monitoring using the speakers, and don't wish to have to switch the GB preferences from "Built in Output" to "Fast Track" each time I want to playbak the audio. Is there an easier way or something in the set up or preferences I am overlooking? Many thanks, D.

  • Nasty feedback when trying to record using the internal mic

I get nasty feedback when trying to record using the internal mic on my macbook. I'm running Maverick. Why is this happening?

Note: there may be other issues involved, but without further details I can only suggest that using headphones is the best way to accurately hear what you're recording, adjust gain levels, and avoid feedback. So this should be the first thing to try as you troubleshoot.

  • Internal mic causing feedback

I just purchased an M-Audio PreUSB interface to go along with my Macbook and LE8, but when i go to plug an semi acoustic bass guitar in, I get nothing but horrific amounts of feedback. After unplugging and replugging the various components in again, i think the source of the feedback is actually the internal mic on the laptop. So now the question is....how do i disable the mic?

System preferences-->Sound-->Input. You should be able to select your interface here as your input. Also go to Audio/Midi Setup and make sure the inputs are correct. In Logic you should check to see if the right inputs are enabled as well under Preferences-->Audio-->M-Audio PreUSB interface.

  • After using the internal mic for the first time I am getting a buzzing feedback from my audio output

After using the internal mic for the first time I am getting a buzzing feedback from my audio output

Go to System Preferences Sound Input and adjust the volume level down by dragging the slider to the left. With an audio app like Logic there is an option for input monitoring when recording so there might be a feedback loop if the volume is set too high. Garage Band works in a similar way. Always be careful when using headphones as the noise can be frightful and cause hearing damage.

  • Inspire P7800 Headphone mic is getting speaker feedback which distorts sound

My P7800 works fine my problem is in a game I get distorted sound from speaker feedback to the mic. Any solution?

    Heh,
Well one of the reasons I bought the speakers was because my friend gave me a copy of FarCry he got bundled with something he bought. But now FarCry wont install heh, so I can't test it on that. I am trying to think of other games I have that use surround..hmm maybe HL2 does. I will do some more testing and wait a couple days to see what you guys think. If worst comes to it I will just buy a soundcard aimed at 7.1 .
    Thanks for responding jimby

  • Line in Feedback, internal mic trouble?

Hey, just got my Macbook today, when i plugged in my guitar for garage band, my line in didnt pick up the sound, instead my external mic did. I get lots of feedback too, I plugged in a usb headset with a mic, turned the mic off and it still pics up sound throught the onboard mic. is there a way to shut it off, and why wont the input pick up sound from my guitar? Thanks a bunch!
    Nick

Either (or both) the Sound preferences in System preferences and/or Garageband are set to internal mic. Set it to the other option.
