Microsoft Drivers for PHP 5.6+ for SQL Server

Hi there! I'm trying to migrate all of the sites running on Joomla 3, PHP 5.6, from mySQL to MSSQL server 2014. I can only find Microsoft SQL driver 3 which supports
until PHP 5.4 but I'm currently running PHP 5.6. Joomla will NOT even recognize SQL driver PHP 5.4 since I'm running PHP 5.6. Based on my research, it seems as Microsoft DO NOT have SQL driver for PHP 5.6 and don't seem to worry about it. Is there any support
for SQL Drivers for PHP in the future (PHP 5.6+)? Any suggestions? These current sites we are supporting do get PHP upgrades, as well as Joomla. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Microsoft as a whole don't worry about PHP, PHP is not a product of Microsoft. The support for PHP was just because of over requests of PHP users and developers so Microsoft supported PHP on Windows.
Microsoft, might, in future support 5.6 and so on, but these features are not as much supported by Microsoft as MS SQL Server, Windows, ASP.NET are supported and updated frequently.
So, as you've already found. The bid is that you go, and find a third-party plugin. Or, you can however read the manuals (developer documentation) of SQL Server and try to create a plugin in PHP that would connect to SQL Server. If I had to do this, I would
have created a new plugin rather than trying to use an old third-party plugin. Microsoft's product are land-locked so you can't say any plugin would fully function with Microsoft's products.

I am gonna be using mostly for Visual sStudio 2013 and Sql Server 2012 .
my budget is $1000.
confuse between DELL/ HP / LENOVO..!!!

This is only a personal taste of mine:
I prefer to work in Virtual Machines. In fact I did set up a VM just for my programming. This has the advantage that games and other stuff are not slowed down by SQL Server Services and similiar stuff.
This also allows me to quickly make a small virtual networks with multiple clients if I need to test some client/server stuff.
Plus I am also a bit of an adminstrator and prefer to test stuff in VM's before I try them in the real world.
I prefer using Virtual Box for Virtual Machines, so one thing of big importance was support for VT-X/AMD-V. Without them Virtual Box cannot run x64 guests even on a x64 host system.
Otherwise I wanted Windows 8 (so I could finally learn to live with it/learn programming for it's UI). And of big importance was an upgrade of gaming ability (my old one had difficulty/impossibility to run most current games).
So I bought a x64, Win8 Gaming Laptop with 8 GiB RAM (so I can run 3-6 Windows 7 hosts in paralell) and looked that the CPU supported Hardware Virtualsiation.
Otherwise pretty much every current laptop will work. x64 OS might be prefereable, as .NET has some limitations under x32/x86 OS (like the
2 GiB limit). Multicore (2 or more) is pretty much the state of the art (are there still any single core CPU's out there?).
It of course needs to be a Windows (7 or 8) to support VS. New Laptops should have UEFI (all that are sold with Windows 8 have).
If you do not need a lot of storage, using a SSD instead of a HDD will propably speed up startups (Windows, Programms) and compilation times a lot (those are disk-heavy operations) - but I only know that it should and heard of people who have them.

Selective XML Index feature is not supported for the current database version , SQL Server Extended Events , Optimizing Reading from XML column datatype

As a last resort on optimizing my stored procedure ( Below ) i wanted to create a Selective XML index ( Normal XML indexes doesn't seem to be improving performance as needed ) but i keep getting this error within my stored proc . Selective XML
Index feature is not supported for the current database version.. How ever
EXECUTE sys.sp_db_selective_xml_index; return 1 , stating Selective XML Indexes are enabled on my current database .
Is there ANY alternative way i can optimize below stored proc ?

The process could not execute 'sp_repldone/sp_replcounters' error for Log Reader Agent and SQL Server Assertion 17066 & 3624 errors in SQL Logs

One of our SQL Server started creating SQLDUMP file and and on investigation I found the error longs are filled with Errors 3624 & 17066. There is transnational replication configured on one of the databases is the LogReader Agent is failing error "The
process could not execute 'sp_repldone/sp_replcounters' on XXXXX".
Not sure if both these Assertion & Logreader Agent errors are related. Before I remove and put the replication, I wanted to check if anyone has experienced the same issues or aware of what the cause.

You need to determine if this error is a transient one or a show stopper one.
It sounds like your log reader agent has crashed and can't continue.
If so your best bet is to call Microsoft CSS and open a support incident.
It also sounds like DBCC CHECKDB was running while the log reader agent crashed.
If you need to get up and running again run sp_replrestart, but then you might find that replicated commands are not picked up. You will need to run a validation to determine if you need to reinitialize the entire publication or a single article.
I have run into errors like this, but they tend to be transient, ie the log reader agent crashes, and on restart it works fine.

Need clear steps for doing performance tuning on SQL Server 2008 R2 (DB Engine, Reporting Services and Integration Services)

We have to inverstigate about a reporting solution where things are getting slow (may be material, database design, network matters).

There is no clear defined step which can be categorized as step by step to performance tuning.Your first goal is to find out cause or drill down to factor causing slowness of SQL server it can be poorly written query ,missing indexes,outdated stats.RAM crunch
CPU crunch so on and so forth.

I agree with Horizon_Net that the MCSD: Web Applications certification would be best for your certification goals. Especially since you are concerned with becoming certified in the future of database development technologies.
Specifically, the 70-487 certification exam covers programming with WCF (for data access over the internet/intranet), Entity Framework (for data access anywhere), Web API (REST Services for data access over the internet/intranet), and Microsoft Azure
(for hosting databases, applications, and much more in the cloud). Most likely, you will be managing SQL Server databases in the cloud in your future.
I highly recommend that you swap 70-483 for 70-480, which will still count for the

FOR UPDATE on MYSQL to SQL SERVER migration

Dear forum,
We have an existing piece of software that used MySQL, and we are in the process of migrating said software to SQL Server. All is working well, except when our program tries to execute statements like this :

"SELECT * FROM ientry WHERE company_code = ? AND year_no = ? AND company_turn = ? AND entry_ref = ? FOR UPDATE");
This results in this JDBC error:
com.microsoft.sqlserver.jdbc.SQLServerException: Line 1: FOR UPDATE clause allowed only for DECLARE CURSOR.
After some research, I've learned that SQL Server has issues with FOR UPDATE statements; also, I saw some fixes were due as far back as 2012, but I can find no further information after this point. Ideally, I'd like to leave the SQL in this legacy program
that I'm migrating well alone, as there are no tests available in the program.
I'm using SQL Server evaluation 2014, MS JDBC driver vs 4.0.

Yes. It is used exactly like FOR UPDATE in Oracle ( I don't know about MySQL). It opts out of multi-version read concurrency and places a lock on the data read that prevents other sessions from updating the data for the duration of the transaction.

the discovery system use Microsoft SQL Server which comes with a 180 day evaluation license.
We've an existing licence for IBM-DB2, is it possible to migrate the system to DB2 or use DB2 instead MS-SQL-server?

License for multi-core CPU on SQL Server Express

I would like to know is it Legal to use SQL Server Express 2008 R2 / 2012
on a machine using 6 cores CPU(e.g.Xeon E5-2440).

SQL Express 2012 will USE a maximum of 4 cores, but there's nothing preventing you running on a server with more cores than that, it simply won't use those additional 2 cores.

I can't remember the exact situation with 2008 R2 unfortunately. From
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc645993(v=sql.105).aspx#Scalability you'll see it's listed simply as being limited to 1 CPU with no mention of cores, so it MIGHT be the case that it will use all of that one physical CPU, but can't remember if that's
definitely the case or not.

Licensing question for AD enterprise with new SQL Server

Hi!
We have Server 2008 R2 STD where our AD is located and it has enough User CAL's. Additionally we have Terminal server with TS licenses.
Now we're purchasing a Server 2012 where we plan to install SQL Server 2012 STD where we will install our third party program and this program is going to be used through Terminal server.
Now the question is do I only need SQL CAL's or will I have to get both SQL CAL's AND User CAL's for the new server? I'm thinking AD servers User CAL's is enough for the whole enterprise, but I'm not 100% sure and need help with this!

ODBC errors for Oracle Migration Workbench and SQL Server 2000 on Windows

Hi all-
I setup a new ODBC connection for the Oracle 10g Migration Workbench to MS SQL Server 2000 on Windows XP and keep getting the following errors when I try to
either test the new ODBC connection to MS SQL Server 2000 for use with the Oracle Migration Workbench tool. Goal is to fix these errors so that I can migrate our test SQL Server 2000 databases to Oracle 10g.
Current configuration
- Oracle 10.1 Migration Workbench
- Oracle 10g Database (target)
- MS SQL Server 2000 (source database)
-Windows XP
-ODBC 3.85.1117 driver for Windows XP with SQL Server and Oracle
Errors:
I. When I test the ODBC connection:
Microsoft SQL Server ODBC Driver Version 03.85.1117
Running connectivity tests...
Attempting connection
[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][TCP/IP Sockets]Specified SQL server not found.
TESTS FAILED!
Now here is what has me totally confused:
I can use the command line ISQL to access the database on the server and IP is all correct and port is available. So I can access the SQL Server database fine it is when I try to setup ODBC that it gives me problems.
Any tips how to get this ODBC working?

1. Jing Jin. If you had READ the post you would have seen that installing later versions is NOT an option.
2. Not supported does NOT mean does NOT work, as Balmukund pointed out in the referenced thread. The site that this databases supports is using ASP which is also NOT supported by Microsoft. As it turns out Balmukund's solution actually turns
out to be the correct solution. I installed SS2K and its Service pack 4 on the machine last night. Good answer Balmukund. as we say in the Navy, "BRAVO ZULU!!" which means "WELL DONE!!
3. Tom Li I just posted the question less than 48 hours ago. My last post was less than 24 hours ago. I think I have the right to be given the opportunity to determine whether a reply is the answer or not. I understand you don't like unanswered
posts sitting around for weeks, months or years. (I don't like it either as I have a few that are still unanswered after several years.) But you should not be showing replies as answers before I even get a chance to see them, much less try them out.
You should also not be showing replies as answers which don't address the criteria of the question. I specifically stated that I had to install SS2K. I went on to state, "And before anyone asks I need to install this version because that is what
the customer is using and I need to duplicate their databases." So the correct answer, if in fact SS2K did not work on Windows 7, would have been a virtual machine answer, as suggested on the thread Balmukund referenced. So before you mark a reply

How to Create a SQL Agent Job For A SSIS Package with Sql Server Authentication

Hi ALl,
I have a SSIS package which basically has a data flow task in which i pull the data from one server and copy it into another server and my source server is the one where i dont have windows authentication and i have to only use a sql server authentication
. This package runs fine if i click the server connection properties type the password and save it.
Now, my task is to set up a sql agent job which basically uses a proxy account and takes this package from the file system and runs it.But when i try to run this package, its failing with an error saying
"Login Failed For rpt5user" where rpt5user is the username for my sql server authentication of the source connection.
Can someone please help me with any suggestions on how to do this?
I have heard that we can achieve it by using xml config file which i have never used and i am trying to google around but for no luck.
So, If someone can please throw any suggestions or ideas on this it would be great.

Table design for an indicator field in SQL Server 2008 R2

Hi, I am using SQL Server 2008 R2 and I have an existing table (Please see the below table definition).
CREATE TABLE Code

Code NVARCHAR(10) NOT NULL UNIQUE,
[Description] NVARCHAR(100) NOT NULL,
[Type] NVARCHAR(30) NULL,
Program NVARCHAR(30) NOT NULL, --Adding this column as a filter for different programs
ModifiedDate DATETIME NOT NULL DEFAULT (getdate()),
ModifiedBy NVARCHAR(128) NOT NULL DEFAULT (suser_sname())
This table has been in use for a while and I am adding a column [Program] to identify records for that program. Previously it used to be just one program and this [Code] table was working just fine now there are 5 different programs introduced in the organization
and this could keep changing over time.
For instance Program A uses Code A, Code B, Code C & Program B uses Code C, Code D, Code E & Program C uses Code C. I know of an option which works but creates maintenance overhead
everytime these programs change by doing something like below.
Code ProgramA ProgramB ProgramC ProgramD ProgramE
A      Yes
B      Yes
C      Yes           Yes           Yes
D                      Yes
E                      Yes
But, is there a better way to do this keeping 1 column for Program and users being able to manage their data without looking at other codes. I mean a user who manages Program A should be able
to see codes A, B, C & user managing Program B should see codes C, D, E & for Program C just code C.

I would add it as a seperate table with columns as
ProgramName CodeName
the data would be like
ProgramName CodeName
ProgramA A
ProgramA B
ProgramA C
ProgramB C
ProgramB D
ProgramB E
ProgramC C
then its just a matter of adding a join from your above table to this table on Code field to get associated Program info and filter on it.

Create universe on top of your SQL server DB and create reports on tops of it.
Later you can use Live office / QAAWS/BIWS to fetch the Data to xcelsius dashboard.
there are few settings in Dashbaord designer which will refresh the dashboard on the refresh every option.
