Microsoft Word 2008 wonays no hard drive space available, which

I have 196 GB of free hard drive space as well as 4 GB of RAM on my MacBook Pro. No other applications are running. No volumes are mounted to the desktop. I am running the most recent Mac OS (10.5.8) and have installed all Microsoft Office 2008 updates.
Yet when I go to save a 7 MB Word Document--which is already saved to my hard drive--after making a small change, I get this error message:
"The disk is full trying to write to 'MacIntosh HD'. Free some space on this drive, or save the document on another disk.
Try one or more of the following:
*Close any unneeded documents, programs. and windows.
*Save the document on another disk."

Just my 2 cents, after encountering exactly the same problem: I saved the same file in the .docx format, having previously directed Word 2008 to use the 97-2004 .doc format.
While this didn't remove the problem of Auto-save complaining about the bogus disk-full issue, it did seem to allow me to save the document continuously without complaint.

  • First post! Hard drive space available

I've searched mac forums and other but I can't figure this out!
Myd dad bought my macbook pro and I thought, until very recently, that it had a 60GB HD as this is what Activity Monitor always told me, as you can see below.
Once I get close to 60GB I have to start deleting loads of stuff. I thought that this was my max storage space but when I got Checkup it said: Hard Drive 149.0GB capacity and apparently I'm already using 144.3GB! It says it has 2 partitions and shows my Macintosh HD's capacity as 51.9GB...
But Disk Utility doesn't show partitions when I look at my Hitachi HD.
At the bottom it also tells me that the hard drive capacity is 160.04GB
When I look at Macintosh HD it says at the bottom that it's capacity is 159.7GB and I have used 48.33GB but only have 7.37GB available. Activity monitor is roughly the same saying I only have 7.63GB left.
My question is why is it like this and how can I make Macintosh HD bigger. I really don't need that much free space outside Macintosh HD and I would rather be able to use the entire approx 160GB hard drive in Mac OS X. I think you're meant to be able to resize the startup partition but i can't see the 2 partitions! I'm pretty sure the blue shading shows the amount of space I have used and is not a separate partition. How do I fix this? Sorry about all the pictures but I wasn't sure I could explain properly without them. thanx in advance, any advice is greatly appreciated even if you just tell me I'm crazy.
    first post btw

The pictures are a good idea, especially with such odd results ! MacBook Pro's don't come with 60Gb drives ...
Have you got a full backup of your current data because if so I'd advise you to wipe and reformat the entire drive and then restore your data from the backup. (Boot from the Install DVD by holding C then run Disc Utility, re-parition the drive and write zeros to it once and you should see the full capacity)

  • Backing up iMovie files to make hard drive space available

has anyone developed a good process for backing up iMovie event video on an external drive, but still working on those events in iMovie?  Or do you have to copy the event back to the hard drive to work in the event?

  • How to Reclaim Hard Drive Space

    Hi there,
I have deleted several GB of messages, folder by folder from Entourage as I have the complete set in Mail. However, I had restarted my iMac and there seems to be too small amount of hard drive space available after this delete has been completed. I don't see anything left in the Entourage folders, nor in the Trash on the dock. So, where else can I check to reclaim the hard drive space? I'm currently showing 140 GB and there should be around 155 GB free.
    Advice much appreciated. Thank you!
    Lynn

Have a look at this article* I wrote:

  • Macbook pro using a lot of hard drive space

I just bought the new macbook pro with the 250 gig hard drive.. but without even transferring anything at all to my new mac from my old.. it already says it only has 178.1 gig's of hard drive space available.. is it seriously already using over 50 gig's of space just out of the box???

What did you figure out? I am having the same problem!
    Have a 200GB HD
    My System Profiler states:
    Capacity=185.99GB which I understand BUT-
    It also states Available=26.25GB
Then, when I go to the Activity Monitor it states:
    Space Utilized=99.14GB
    Space Free=25.85GB
    With a total of 124.99GB
WHERE IS THE MISSING 51GB of memory?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?
    What is the deal????
    Anyone?

  • UML295 consuming all available hard drive space

    Hello,
I have encountered a problem with multiple people on multiple computers. I am presuming these are some kind of cache files for the enhanced interface, but the device will consume all hard drive space available within %userprofile%\AppData\Local\Verizon
I am attempting to do a sitdown with the user, but I suspect it will be all things normal. I am wondering if anyone has seen this or knows anything. We do use Cisco AnyConnect, but so far, I haven't seen anything documented for behavior compared to the UML290 which required us changing the way the device identified itself to the operating system.

  • Live links in PDFs generated from Microsoft Word 2008?

A couple of years ago, I was informed that my live links (bookmarks, indexmarks, etc.) in documents generated by Microsoft Word 2004 for the Macintosh did not become PDF live links in Acrobat Standard 7 because the Mac version from Microsoft Word 2004 didn't use the necessary hooks (
    i "APIs"
or something like that) even though the Windows version did.
Now that MS Word/MS Office 2008 for the Mac is coming out, will we be able to generate PDFs with such live links.
Any input will be most appreciated.
Acrobat Standard 7.0.9. Tiger 10.4.11. Dual bootable, DP MDD 1.25GHz G4 (2004), maxed out at 2GB of RAM, both Spotlight and Dashboard disabled, Photoshop primary scratch disk on dedicated 160GB internal drive, at least 100GB available on each of the four internal drives, up to 300GB on some. Counting external FW drives just over 1TB of drive space available. nVidia GeForce 7800 GS 425MHz 256 MB graphics display card. Processor napping enabled through CHUD 3.5.2.

While this does not answer the problem of live links. (You can create them Manually, they just are not generated direct from Office Mac).
The answer to the other question of the little annoying PDFMaker Menu (that never really worked correctly for me (took 5 minutes just to generate a 108K PDF).
Because MicroSoft took out VBA Support on Mac side That rendered the PDFMaker menu useless because it uses VBA to work.
So what they have done in Word 2008 is actually put it as Translator choice on the save menu. They now directly can save Word Files directly as PDF files. once you have created your file and saved it. Then go again to *Save As....* , when menu open scroll mouse down until you run across the choice PDF. select that and save. not only is it easier a 108K document can be saved in about 15 seconds or less not the old 5 minutes going through PDFMaker.
One of PDFMaker's failings was that each step of conversion it called up Distiller which first created a .PS file. Then it checked the file. Then created the PDF file. Then checked the file again before actually writing the PDF File. Then only after checking the written PDF, would it delete the invisible PS file. Finally the PDF file was created. Naturally with all the check steps if you have a very large file could take ages.
With word's new feature (2008) you can generate a PDF at blinding speeds.

  • Where's my missing hard drive space?

I posted earlier about this, it may be a bit off topic but if anyone can offer a clue, I would appreciate it.
I got my win 7 upgrade and was waiting until vista started giving me headaches or the win7 service pack1 came out to upgrade...vista got me to upgrade today and I have to admit it was much less painful than i anticipated.
My question is about the missing hard drive space on my Idea center K230 on the box and on the side of the comp it claims a 640 HD (it claims in small print that up to 18gb may be used for the service partition) I questioned this when i first got it and even after deleting all the preloaded crap it was still saying 540 available out of 580GB....then I read that Lenovo has a huge partition for backup. So when I do my upgrade to win 7- 64 bit, I do a clean install and delete the smaller partition and reformat and expand the larger but before installing the new OS it says I have 596 available, so where the hell is the other 44GB of hard drive...did Lenovo rip us off and put 600GB hard drives in the K230's or is there a hidden partition still left that I cant find?
I am running everything off of my 596GB C: drive, I have my virus stuff and video card extras loaded, everything from the upgrade and 21 available patches and new drivers for most of my stuff....right now I am at at 575gb available and if i can ever find a printer driver that works I will create a backup point or disc from there, whatever win 7 allows. I never wanted the Lenovo one button back up and thought it was stupid to put a big glowing button on the keyboard that wipes your system back to when it came out of the box...I had nightmares of someone getting curious and going "what does this button do?"
.I notice I have a program files folder and a program files (x86) folder with a bunch of redundant files. what's the deal with this is Lenovo still hiding a backup program (maybe in that hidden partition?)  that fills my hard drive twice as fast or is there a purpose for the file copies?
Any info on the above questions would be appreciated, and for those of you just looking for upgrade info I have good news, when you finally get your win7 upgrade disc it is the easiest windows installation ever, almost copmpletely automated, and very fast. So far the only sticking point is finding a printer driver, but I have 3 printers i can try, maybe one is supported.

    Hi wise2u!
You can read all the details about how storage manufacturers use multiples of 1000 to measure disk space, and Windows reports it in multiples of 1024, and there is some overhead for Windows, or you can just use this rule of thumb from wikipedia:
A general rule of thumb to quickly convert the manufacturer's hard disk capacity to the standard Microsoft Windows formatted capacity is 0.93*capacity of HDD from manufacturer for HDDs less than a terabyte and 0.91*capacity of HDD from manufacturer for HDDs equal to or greater than 1 terabyte.
    0.93 * 640GB = 595GB, which is about what you're seeing.
    I don't work for Lenovo. I'm a crazy volunteer!

  • Can't download applications (poss due to hard drive space issue)?

    Hi there,
I'm having major hard drive issues with my MacBook Pro OS X 10.4.11 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo 4GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM laptop.
I use it for video editing and also keep music on it. However for the video editing I use an external hard drive, though I've found some Final Cut Pro files on my internal hard drive before and deleted them whenever I've found them. Sometimes it's an Imovie project, sometimes a straightforward final cut project, sometimes a playout of a final cut project.
My problem is that I now have almost no hard drive space, to the point where I wasn't able to save a Word file last week due to insufficient disk space! I emptied the trash and managed to get it to save in the end.
I immediately went on to the discussions pages and it was suggested to try WhatSize, OmniDiskSweeper and Disk Inventory to identify the files that were taking up all the room. Unfortunately NONE of these applications will download onto my laptop. They're not the only ones, I tried downloading a couple of other applications for music and the like and NOTHING will download!
I went through everything that I felt I knew for certain that I could delete without being detrimental and freed up a small bit of room and tried again but still NOTHING. I then used Onyx on the suggestion of another post and freed up a few gigs (I went from 1.7gb available to 7gb available) and assumed that this would do the trick, however, it hasn't!
What happens when I try to download these (or any) applications is that when i click the "Download Now" area on the webpage it begins to move onto what should be a download progress page or a "download complete" page but instead just spends an eternity "loading", with the little loading wheel on the left of the tab just spinning around and around. I tried leaving it literally all night last night but to no avail, opened it back up again and still the circle was spinning around and around "loading". This has been the case for the several dozen attempts I've made, no matter what the website.
It seems like something of a Catch 22 if the situation is that I can't download these applications that will help me to free up Hard Drive space, because I don't have any Hard Drive space! Though I'd have thought that the 7gb I now have would be ample. Did my laptop turn to self preservation mode perhaps when the hard drive was down to the bare minimum and I wasn't even able to save word documents?
If anybody can help it'd be HUGELY appreciated...
    All the best,
    Rory

If you open a Finder window you can also sort by size by clicking the size column header. In view options you can also set it to calculate all sizes so it will also show folder sizes. Although not as handy as the cataloging applications you can at least start tracking down where the disk space is going. With video you can probably just copy half a dozen files off and immediately free up many GB.
Note that this isn't just a matter of convenience. OSX makes lots of temporary files and is doing it all the time. If it can't find space for those files it can result in a serious drive crash and that could cost you several hundred dollars in recovery expenses. A Sig indicates, you need space just for computer operation. I feel the % recommendation is a bit vague since people use drives ranging from 10 - 1000 GB in size. My computer regularly uses 6GB of hard drive space for temporary files, and I like to leave wriggle room, so I usually leave at least 15-20GB. You can check the temporary file usage by looking at VM in Activity monitor.
As BDaqua observes, having a crowded drive also slows down your computer. If it has to hunt for nooks and crannies in which to place bits and pieces of bigger files that takes time. Normally one does not have to worry so much about fragmentation of files on a Mac, but your scenario of working with large files on a really crowded drive may be defying that generalization.

  • Disappearing Hard Drive Space After Yosemite Update

After installing OS X Yosemite my hard drive space has dwindled to basically nothing, rendering my computer useless.  I had at least 50 gb (maybe more) of hard drive space before updating from mavericks to yosemite.  Now, after using my computer for 30 mins or less I get an error message saying that my storage space is low. After a restart I will get about 600 mb of storage but then the cycle repeats.  Since I have upgraded to Yosemite I have not saved or downloaded any large files but there is a significant amount of storage space (104 gb) used in the other category.  It is not consistent with my usage. I initially had file vault encryption turned on but I thought maybe that was the cause of my disappearing hard drive space so I turned file encryption off and still no luck.
    Please Help!

You are too low on drive space for iDVD to run properly. It is recommended that you try to have about 15-20 GB free for the application to run. See if you can delete anything to free up more space. Or, move more of your files to your external drive. iDVD needs to be on your computer's drive, so don't move it, or any of the iLife applications to your external drive.
You can create iMovies on an external drive, move your entire iPhoto and iTunes libraries to external drives, but I find iDVD works better if I create its projects on my main drive. I save all of my iDVD projects as disk image files and then move those files to my external drive for saving my projects. This allows me to delete the original iDVD project and the original iMovie project used in it, which gives more free space on my drives.

  • Insufficient Hard Drive Space in Windows 7 after upgrading from XP Bootcamp

I just upgraded from windows xp to windows 7 via bootcamp with success; however, I find the hard drive space diminished. I originally had 32gb partition for xp and continued to use that allocation space since my macbook pro has about only 120 gb total space. I never checked how much space I had from the beginning but now after I installed several applications such as norton, skype, yahoo messenger, etc., I have about 1 gb left free looking at "my computer". I've looked around and found that the minimal requirement for windows 7 is 16 gb. That does not make sense that I have 32 gb and am now left with just 1 gb with just basic programs installed and I do mean basic; no huge programs since I just use my mac as a "leisure" laptop. Please help! I tried googling and looking for answers in discussion boards and can't find an answer.

I don't ever recall seeing 16GB in all my reading. Okay, yes for 32-bit but that really seems... misleading unless Home Basic.

As for how large, depends on a number of things like how much RAM, page file, hibernation, temp files, etc. More for 64-bit than 32-bit. The amount needed for rollback drivers, restore points, should also be taken into account. Thumbnails and cache, too.
I use 64-bit version, consumes 65GB, and I really don't have much, and all my data, installers and updaters and such are kept on another hard drive, not the system drive.
At least you can't normally "upgrade" from XP to 7, you have to do a custom clean install so you shouldn't have anything left behind or in Windows.old
I wouldn't install Norton. MSSE is fine, all you need (I did use beta's of Norton 360 v.3 and others too).

  • Mac Microsoft Word 2008 double side printing

    Hi.
I recently purchased Macbook Pro 15, and installed Microsoft Office 2008.
I have a SamSung Express 282 series laser printer.
When I use my window pc or window labtop, it double-side prints all right.
But when I try to double-side print with Mac Pro Microsoft word 2008, it doesn't work.
From the Print menu, I go to 'printer feature' and click on 'reverse two-sided printing', but it keeps saying
"Changing the setting of Reverse Two-Sided Printing to On would cause a conflict that cannot be resolved. No change will be made,"
and does not let me click on it.
Does anyone know what's going on?
I really want to save some trees and do only double-sided printing, but it doesn't let me.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks, guys.

Be sure to pick the OS X Lion 10.7 driver from the pulldown menu before selecting the driver category below it.
If that doesn't work, contact Canon.   There are some Lion supporting double sided printers for sure.
Mind you, when manufacturers rely on the CUPS drivers as they did in this instance they may have
taken the easy way out, and that might avoid having the double sided printing.
http://support.apple.com/kb/dl899 may be able to patch those drivers to give you double sided printing if the Canon ones do not.
There are a few other open source alternatives*.
When double sided printing doesn't work, the trick is to rotate the pages upside down and feed face down switching odd and even page numbers.
Test with single sheets first, and then once you get the hang of it, do multiple.
I don't know where your printer feeds, so you'll have to try a couple times to figure out the correct direction.

  • Missing Large Chunk of Hard Drive Space - Pavilion Dv4t

    Hi All,
I purchased a Pavillion Dv4t about a month ago with a 320 gb hard drive. Upon first inspection, I noticed that the drive partitions, when added together, fell way short of 320gb. The C drive plus Recovery drive = 298 gb! I initially wondered if the missing space was a hidden partition containing vista, and that when I custom installed windows 7, I would be able to formatt that part of the drive to install 7. This does not appear to be the case as the install upgrade only showed the 2 partitions totaling 298gigs.
Does anyone know what that missing space is and how to recover it? Or is it something important that I shouldent mess with?
Has anyone else had this problem or noticed that they are missing this much hard drive space?
Also, I've run a hdd diagnodtic test wich showed no drive issues.
    Thanks!

    Capacity measurements
A disassembled and labeled 1997 hard drive. All major components were placed on a mirror, which created the symmetrical reflections.
Raw unformatted capacity of a hard disk drive is usually quoted with SI prefixes (metric system prefixes), incrementing by powers of 1000; today that usually means gigabytes (GB) and terabytes (TB). This is conventional for data speeds and memory sizes which are not inherently manufactured in power of two sizes, as RAM and Flash memory are. Hard disks by contrast have no inherent binary size as capacity is determined by number of heads, tracks and sectors.
This can cause some confusion because some operating systems may report the formatted capacity of a hard drive using binary prefix units which increment by powers of 1024.
A one terabyte (1 TB) disk drive would be expected to hold around 1 trillion bytes (1,000,000,000,000) or 1000 GB; and indeed most 1 TB hard drives will contain slightly more than this number. However some operating system utilities would report this as around 931 GB or 953,674 MB, whereas the correct units would be 931 GiB or 953,674 MiB. (The actual number for a formatted capacity will be somewhat smaller still, depending on the file system). Following are the correct ways of reporting one Terabyte.
SI prefixes (Hard Drive) equivalent Binary prefixes (OS) equivalent
    1 TB (Terabytes) 1 * 10004 B 0.9095 TiB (Tebibytes) 0.9095 * 10244 B
    1000 GB (Gigabytes) 1000 * 10003 B 931.3 GiB (Gibibytes) 931.3 * 10243 B
    1,000,000 MB (Megabytes) 1,000,000 * 10002 B 953,674.3 MiB (Mebibytes) 953,674.2 * 10242 B
    1,000,000,000 KB (Kilobytes) 1,000,000,000 * 1000 B 976,562,500 KiB (Kibibytes) 976,562,500 * 1024 B
    1,000,000,000,000 B (bytes) - 1,000,000,000,000 B (bytes) -
Microsoft Windows reports disk capacity both in a decimal integer to 12 or more digits and in binary prefix units to three significant digits.
The capacity of an HDD can be calculated by multiplying the number of cylinders by the number of heads by the number of sectors by the number of bytes/sector (most commonly 512). Drives with the ATA interface and a capacity of eight gigabytes or more behave as if they were structured into 16383 cylinders, 16 heads, and 63 sectors, for compatibility with older operating systems. Unlike in the 1980s, the cylinder, head, sector (C/H/S) counts reported to the CPU by a modern ATA drive are no longer actual physical parameters since the reported numbers are constrained by historic operating-system interfaces and with zone bit recording the actual number of sectors varies by zone. Disks with SCSI interface address each sector with a unique integer number; the operating system remains ignorant of their head or cylinder count.
The old C/H/S scheme has been replaced by logical block addressing. In some cases, to try to "force-fit" the C/H/S scheme to large-capacity drives, the number of heads was given as 64, although no modern drive has anywhere near 32 platters.
    [edit] Formatted disk overhead
For a formatted drive, the operating system's file system internal usage is another, although minor, reason why a computer hard drive or storage device's capacity may show its capacity as different from its theoretical capacity. This would include storage for, as examples, a file allocation table (FAT) or inodes, as well as other other operating system data structures. This file system overhead is usually less than 1% on drives larger than 100 MB. For RAID drives, data integrity and fault-tolerance requirements also reduce the realized capacity. For example, a RAID1 drive will be about half the total capacity as a result of data mirroring. For RAID5 drives with x drives you would lose 1/x of your space to parity. RAID drives are multiple drives that appear to be one drive to the user, but provides some fault-tolerance.

  • I can't type in my Microsoft Word 2008 anymore on MacbookPro, how do I fix this?

I have a MacbookPro from 2009 and my Microsoft Word 2008 won't let me type or use any keyboard functions on the page. I still have full use of my mouse/cursor. I also just recently updated to Yosemite. Help!

This just started happening to me, too, about an hour ago. I updated My Macbook Air 2013 to Yosemite a day after it came out, and I use Microsoft Word 2008 quite frequently (several hours a day), yet this just started happening.
TEMPORARY SOLUTION: I find that if I completely quit Microsoft Word and reopen it, I am once again able to type.
It's happened to me twice so far tonight. This second time I noticed that it was right after I copy and pasted something, then changed it to double space. Have you noticed anything similar?

  • How do I add microsoft office to an external hard drive when my start up disc is full?

I have installed adobe collection and final cut studio on my macbook pro. That being said my start up disk is full and I need microsoft office so I was wanting to know how I could add microsoft office to and external hard drive without deleting the whole adobe collection and reinstalling because I can't put office on my computer. Also I have a 120 gb solid state hard drive so hard drive kit would be expensive to replace and a hassle to redownload programs.

When you say full, how full do you mean? If you are under 10% of free space, you are headed for a big crash. I hope you have everything backed up.
You can copy MS office to an external drive but you don't want to run it, or any other program from an external drive, inclduing flash drives. You'd be much better off moving your music, photos, and/or documents to the external and putting your applications that you are using on the MBP hard drive. If you need to use the music, photos or documents, then drag them individually over to the MBP. Adobe CS and MS Ofice should definitely reside on the hard drive, no question about it.
