MiFi issues-DO NOT BUY

I have now had 4 Mi Fi's since August 2011.
The first one lasted less than 3 months (It was brand new) Spent half hour on the phone troubleshooting.
I was sent a "certified preowned like new"-it lasted less that 4 months when a connection came loose-I was  sent another "certified preowned like new".
This one did not work-spent a half hour on the phone troubleshooting-paid $12.99 to have another one shipped over night which arrived 3 days later. This one  (another ceritified preowned like new)did not work either-I spent an hour on the phone troubleshooting it- I asked to be released from my contract or sent a new one- I was told that they  would have to put in a "work order" and would call me in 2 or 3 days- I asked how much time I would have to spend on the phone this time and was not given an answer.
DO NOT BUY ONE OF THESE. (they also suddedly turn off)

Rosie,
Could you elaborate for the rest of us what your problem was?
You mention the Mifi did not last and did not work but any extra details you can spare would be very helpful for the rest of us so we can compare currently known issues and document new ones.  Anyone who has gone through 4 mifi's in 8 months must have a pretty serious issue we could learn from.
For example common issues with the MiFi are disconnections from VZW, disconnections from local devices, slow speeds and failure to handoff between 3G and 4G.

  • NB205 - very poor product and service, do not buy Toshiba!! Completely dead in 6 months

I am posting this to warn as many people as possible to avoid buying Toshiba in the future.  Not only was the product faulty, which I can understand sometimes happens w mass production.  But the service was completely unacceptable, which was the deciding factor for me.
    1.  My new Netbook NB-205/BL started intermittently shutting down for no reason (complete black screen, not even to blue screen).  By the time I returned home from my trip it had stopped working altogether.  The power light will come on, and the fan/hard disk will try to spin for a split second and then go silent and stop completely.
    2.  Upon calling tech support who walked me through a bunch of diagnostic attempts (removing and re-inserting battery, etc.), they concluded it was dead and I needed to send it in.
    3.  The only thing I really care about is my data as I had stored a bunch of invaluable photos and downloaded about $200 worth of Amazon MP3s since receiving the Toshiba NB205.
    4.  Tech support assured me they would back up the hard drive for me and ship either a fixed or new computer with all my data still intact.  They asked me to register it w their warranty department and call them back so they could send me a shipping box to send it back in.  I did all that and it's been >3 weeks and no box.
    5.  So today I called Tech Support again and the guy goes "Oh yes, you have shipped your computer in for a hard drive failure?".  At which point I had to explain how A) it's not a hard drive failure B) I haven't shipped anything anywhere because I never got the box I was promised.
    6.  Then I proceed to ask him again if my data would be safe, to which he informs me it's Toshiba policy/practice not to back up data for customers.  I found this to be unacceptable and then I didn't know who to trust so I asked for a supervisor.
    7.  This supervisor wasn't able to help me either as he further informed me that they will not back anything up for me AND that I had to pay for shipping AND pay an authorized Toshiba Repair Center to back my hard drive up.
    8.  I suggested what everyone who I've talked to has said:  Toshiba could send me a new computer since they've diagnosed the old one as being dead.  I could swap out the hard drives, or they could send me one without a hard drive.  And I could send them back the dead NB205.
    9.  NO was the answer.  Toshiba wouldn't do anything for me, because software issues are NOT under warranty.  And backing up my hard drive is considered to be a software issue.  I repeatedly told him that it's their defective hardware that is causing the need for data backup.  But this went ignored and I was told they don't cover anything in this case.
I either had to lose my data or pay probably $100 for a Toshiba dealer to back up my data for me.  Oh yeah, and there isn't one of those within 20 miles of me and I live in Silicon Valley!!  Oh yes, and they want me to pay to ship them the dead computer.
    10.  I finally asked him how he would feel if he was the customer, and if he felt this was any way to treat Toshiba customers.  He replied by saying they have a process, and this is the process!
Well the next time I and any of you are in our "process" of deciding which brand of technology to buy, I'm certainly not going to consider Toshiba anymore.  This is the second chance I'm giving Toshiba after having a very poor laptop AND service experience in 2000.  Well, it took me 9 years to give them another shot, and I'm never going to trust them again.  I told myself "well, it's a high quality Japanese brand, one that commands a premium in price that people are willing to pay so it should be an excellent product.  AND if things do go pooryly, Toshiba will stand behind their name."
I was SO wrong!!!  Let this be a message to all people out there, as I did read these forums before buying my product, but the NB205 was so new it didn't have many posts.
Fool me once, shame on you.  Fool me twice, shame on me!  I'm done with you Toshiba, it's really too bad that you will not honor your brand with fair treatment of your customers.
    Ming Wu

It isn't that difficult to back up the data from the hard drive.  You can easily do it yourself for about $20.  http://www.datarecoverytutorial.com/recover-data-from-failed-laptop-notebook/
As for Toshiba backing up your data, ALL of the manufacturer's have that same policy.  NONE of them will backup the data for you nor will they guarantee that your system will be returned with the existing data intact.  This is spelled out in the Warranty documents and is fairly common knowledge amongst most computer users.
If the data was that important you should have been backing it up to USB flash drives, a usb external hard drive, or some other backup device on a daily basis just for this very reason.  The fact that you failed to do so doesn't make it Toshiba's problem.
If you don't post your COMPLETE model number it's very difficult to assist you. Please try to post in complete sentences with punctuation, capitals, and correct spelling. Toshiba does NOT provide any direct support in these forums. All support is User to User in their spare time.

  • Announcing my divorce from Nokia or "DO NOT BUY TH...

After owning the debacle that is the NoKia N97 for several months, I felt a longing to return to simpler, easier to use and more reliable but feature rich handsets that Nokia used to be very well known for, and were actually pretty good at making. Remember that word 'reliable' for now, as I'll come back to it. But basically, every time I had to pull out the heavy, bulky, temperamental N97 from my pocket, and wait for its glitchy, lazy software to figure out what I was trying to do at that moment in time, I became more and more resentful of it and realized that sometimes, "smart phones" are anything but. I longed for the simplicity and beauty of Nokia's 6230,or 6230i, or 6233 days, just as a few examples, when phones did everything you could want them for and didn't require several Phds to operate. In my search, I came to rest upon the Nokia 6700 classic.
I'll confess - I was hooked almost from the fist look. It's stainless steel body; it's cool, classy candbybar form with rounded edges and its simple, yet striking front plate communicated a seriousness and promised a robust, straightforward experience. A quick glance through the feature list and I was hooked. I had to have it. I had dreams of abandoning my N97 to my underwear drawer, possibly only to be liberated in times of desperate need when a back-up handset might be helpful for a trip, but determined not to sell it to anyone, as I knew in my heart, I could not wish the evil of an N97 on my own worst enemy. In one amazing spec sheet, Nokia had promised redemption with the 6700 classic, and I was eager to give it to them.
To be fair, I was warned. Even though I had committed to buying, I raked the internet for reviews. "Temperamental" they warned. "Unreliable" they screamed! "Daft" they exclaimed. I read them all but was unmoved - mine would be the exception, rather than the rule. Mine would defy the expectations, and work well without glitch or incident, for after all, this was Nokia, and Nokia could not let me down so utterly, so completely, so unremorsefully, so quickly in succession, with two different products... not me; a fervant, loyal, reliable supporter and purchaser of their products for the last 10 years, without interruption... This would not happen. I willed it.
I've owned the phone for less two months, and here's the facts: before it just stopped working, the phone would get impossibly hot during phone calls using the headset. It would routinely drop calls for no discernable reason, headset on or not, and when it was offended by my reaction to it doing so, would actually turn itself OFF during phone calls to drive the point home. The phone doesn't have a 3.5mm jack (which I knew when I bought it) so is not terribly good for listening to music or plugging into a car radio, and for reasons which shall always escape me but which shall likely fascinate me to the point of distraction till the day I die, Nokia made it so that the radio could not be played over the loudspeaker!!!!
So, you can't play the radio over the loudspeaker.... and it doesn't work very well, for MAKING PHONE CALLS!!!!
Then, about a month ago, it just turned off, and hasn't come back on since. Despite everything I've tried. And tried. And tried. And keep trying... sigh.
So I've had no choice... Back to the underwear drawer.... and the N97...
Oh, Nokia, my once beloved Nokia, whyfore art thou a hopeless gaggle of idiot-savants and social maladajusts? Where hast your dependability gone? Why hast your basic five-year-old-knows-better-by-now-common-good-sense abandoned thee? Oh my beloved, would that I could flog thee to within an inch of thy corporate life until the madness that has seized thee is over, and thy commitment to me, thy customer, was once more paramount in thy "threatened-giant-addled-brain"....
But alas.... not. So I'm quitting Nokia, after 10 years as a loyal customer. I've owner about 15 or more Nokias since I began, and I've just had so many bad experiences of quality issues in the last two years that I just no longer have faith in the company, or its products. It's painful, because I like the company, what it used to stand for and have always found its products to be the most attractive made by anyone, but I just can't keep spending huge amounts of money on phones that don't actually work. Siiiiighh... I don't know what I'll move on to next, I just know it won't be a Nokia product, and frankly, I don't really care. There's not much joy in it for me anyway. Not now.
Oh... and whatever you do, wherever you are: DO.NOT.BUY.THE.NOKIA.6700.CLASSIC. Under ANY circumstances. On pain of death. Just DON'T.DO.IT. Don't accept it as a gift. Don't buy it used. Don't get it. Just don't. Stay well clear.
With much respect and affection for you all,
    Axel

  • Samsung Brightside? Until they fix DO NOT BUY

The Samsung Brightside is defective. I have had two in less than one month and both did not let me use the T9 function. When a person uses the T9 function the phone powers off and re-starts. There are many many complaints on this board but Verizon is just not moving to resolve this issue.
I would suggest that Verizon let Samsung know that they will not sell Samsung phones if they do not get a fix going. I suggest that Samsung through Verizon,
    1. recall the phone so that we all can exchange it for one that works
    2. recall the phone so that you can bring it in to a Verizon dealer where they can install a software up date
    3. Verizon allows the exchange for another phone and send all the poorly made Samsungs back to Korea
    4. Verizon quit making false promises and give a specific course of action to us consumers how to get this corrected
I hope everyone else who mistakenly bought this phone does not give up. You can contact Better Business Bureau, your States Attorney, Consumer Protection Agency and more. Please post any other ideas you have to get this resolved.
If no fix every happens then I hope people remember this when their contracts are done.
Recently Apple replaced first generation iPods with the newest generation. All you had to do was go online and submit the serial number, send in the old one, working or not, wait and then get a new one.
Samsung & Verizon do you get the hint?

I would like a phone that works. Here is an article I read from another customer.
Re: Samsung Brightside? Until they fix DO NOT BUY
created by PMack62 in Basic Phones - View the full discussion
I just filed a formal complaint with the Massachusetts Attorney General's office regarding this phone. It is flawed, defective, faulty and Verizon CONTINUES to sell it for profit. My Calendar and Alarm features do not WORK and I've experienced a problem with the phone turning off if you press a certain key while texting - that's CRAZY! But the Calendar and Alarm features have not work and continue not to function since i bought the phone. I brought it in twice to the SUDBURY MASSACHUSETTS VERIZON STORE 420 BOSTON POST ROAD - and was pretty much told "too bad, so sad." Verizon would NOT contact Samsung and refused to do anything to try and fix the problem! And now ANOTHER problem has cropped up - when I get a single text, I get the text notification TWICE - THAT's NEVER happened since I bought the phone. This phone is a piece of CHIT and Verizon continues to profit on clueless customers!
Apple just replaced all their forst gen ipods with the latest gen ipod based on battery issues. Verizon could do the same with folks who bought this phone. The consumer could type in teh serial number then Verizon/Samsung could send out a comparable phone that works. Yes, we get to keep the phone until we get a new one. Verizon has LG and Pantech that seem to work so why not let us replace our Samsung for one of these at a Verizon store and "no questions asked"? How about a touch screen phone that requires a data plan but we do not get to activate the data plan portion of the phone. How about we keep the phone you do not charge for ANYTHING until the contract is up. The fix simple but emails and promises only are a way to stall the consumer hoping they will go away. I do plan to "go away" if I do not get resolution.

  • Disappointing support - will not buy creative products any more

    Hi,
just wanted to share my experience with creative support. Just to keep in mind for those planning to buy creative products...
I bought a Zen X-fi 2 last summer. Mainly the features of sleep-timer and alarm using any mp3 file have been my selection criteria for this player, because I was interested in automatic switch-off in the evening and a wakeup in the morning by some nice music instead of a standard beeping of my alarm clock.
Unfortunately, I am really disappointed now by creative. As I already reported here (<a rel="nofollow" target="_blank" href="http://forums.creative.com/t5/MP3-Players/Zen-X-Fi-2-Problems-with-snooze-function/m-p/56477)"]http://forums.creative.com/t5/MP3-Players/Zen-X-Fi-2-Problems-with-snooze-function/m-p/56477)[/url] I experience some bugs with the above mentioned features. Let me summarize:
    - interestingly, the alarm will repeat 3 times AT MAXIMUM, i.e., even if you choose "snooze" after the 3rd repeat, it will not repeat again.
--> official (!!) statement of creative: "it is the intended behavior of the player, which shall avoid discharging of the player in alarm mode."
?Well I cannot understand this, because it should be a simple "if" statement in the firmware, to check whether the user pushed the screen or not. Of course I understand, that if the user does not do anything after the alarm went off, the repeating signal of alarm should be restricted in repetition to avoid the complete discharging. But as soon as user interaction takes place, the player should behave like it is expected from the labeling on the screen, right?
?- One reproducible bug: In general the player repeats the alarm 3 times at maximum also, if you just hit the touch-screen once, but do not choose "snooze" or "turn off alarm" (in addition, the buttons on the screen are too tiny in my opinion - just try to push the right button if you're sleepy in the morning...). BUT: at certain initial times of alarm (e.g. 6:40, 7:45 or 6:50, 7:50, 7:5), if you just hit the touchscreen once without further selections, the alarm does not repeat 3 times, but only once or twice AND it will repeat one or two hours later.
?--> Very interesting behavior. The only reaction of creative support: "we forwarded the feedback to our developers, but we cannot tell you if your recommendations will be implemented into the next firmware."
?Why are bugs like that treated as "feedback" or "recommendation" that apparently have not to be resolved?
?- finally, if you use the sleep-timer and your player powers-off in the evening (in the middle of a song, if you listen to music), then the player will continue the song as soon as you turned off the alarm the next morning. This is annoying, because you have to go to "Music -> now playing" and stop it also. A behavior I would not expect, do you agree?
I waited for a corrected firmware for half a year now - nothing changed, only standard replies of the support, no offers how to solve these problems.
Perhaps you now understand why I cannot recommend creative any more and definitely will not buy or recommend any creative product in the future.
Originally, I thought that companies are interested in satisfied customers - seems like creative is going a different way...
Keep this in mind before you finally choose creative...
    regards

  • Cannot download a TV episode "you did not buy this" error message

I have received two new episodes of programs that I purchased, and tonight when I tried to download, both shows gave me an error message that said "you did not buy this.  You cannot download."
But I DID buy this!  I've bought these two shows for more than a season!
I had an earlier error message that these shows could not download at this time, in the morning.  During the day I shut down the computer completely, and rebooted this evening . . . . . to get this new error message.
    Any ideas?

  • My appstore app shows an update available for CodeBox, which I did not buy, does anyone know what the problem could be? I don't think I have been hacked (no money subtracted, etc.)

    Hi all,
For some time now, my appstore app shows an update available for CodeBox, which I did not buy. When I try to update it it asks for my ID and password (all normal), but then it gives an Unknown Error.
I am 100% sure I didn't buy the app, I do not see any transaction on my card or in the appstore apart of this one, so does not seem to be a hack.
Does anyone know what is happening, this is a tricky thing which is making me lose trust in the payment/account system that Apple is using.
    Thanks!
    Isidro

well... actually you are right dahveed, i had a dodgy copy of galaxy on fire 2 (boring game), that's what was giving me the issue. i followed your posts about the MAS etc., and discovered this was the problem. Corrected. You're a knowledgable man, thank you

  • Is there anyone who advertises a product that will cause you to NOT buy it?

for me its not who advertises it but its who makes it I do not buy kraft, nestle,or pepsi products because all three companies partnered with senomyx
click the link and read the whole article what makes me hate senomyx is near the bottom

or really even consider it?There are a few for me.Charles Osgood. This guy has all sorts of radio ads for all sorts of different products. He thinks he's talking about them like they are awesome, but hopefully nobody falls for his crap. He's done (recently) Dell, Lifelock, Uber and more. The guy SOUNDS like a scam artist.
Alan Thicke. I don't know who the heck who he is, but he keeps talking like EVERYONE knows who he is. I guess he was on TV some time back? No, even if i had IRS issues I wouldn't use the company you advertise. Again, he sounds like a scam artist. Those are just two that come to the top of my head... I ran out for lunch a few minutes ago and it was back to back thicke osgood osgood thicke... Ugh.While we're on the subject.. What kind of ad would get you to buy something vs. turn you off completely??

  • Why not buy? 2.16GHz CoreDuo MacBook Pro

I currently use a 17-inch G4 1.33GHz PowerBook and am ready for an upgrade. I'm considering to a new Core Duo machine. My uses are modest page layout (Quark Xpress) light photo editing (Photoshop) and presentations (PowerPoint). The ability to run Windows applications directly (With Parallels) is very important; moderate travel use and desktop replacement are the other criteria. There is currently what appears to be a screaming good deal from several of the mail-order houses ($1700 after rebates) on the original 17-inch 2.16GHz MacBook Pro. This is the version that came before todays Core 2 Duo machines and will obviously be slower and less capable. But saving a grand is attractive. Is there any compelling reason NOT to go for the Core Duo machine? Will it be unable to run applications that are foeseeable? Will it be an unloved technical orphan? Why might I regret the purchase?
    Thanks for all advice.
    PowerBook 17"   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

Tony is right, BUT to be more specific the 15in Core2Dues include both Firewire 800 and 400, where as the 15in CoreDuo had just firewire 400. As for the 17in CoreDuo (the one Aces is looking at) that did have firewire 800 adn 400...
I want to also add that the programs you listed you work with are questionable to me. I mean this in regards to their native processor language, those programs are written for PowerPC chips. I am not sure if you are familiar so please let me briefly explain (I, as well as others can go into more detail if needed). Anyways, as you know, the new Apple computers such as the MBP have intel processors. Meaning the entire chip architechture is different then that of the G3, G4, G5 (all were PowerPC chips). So although Apple rewrote the Operating system to work for the new intel chips, many software vendors, such as the programs you listed (Photoshop, Powerpoint, etc...) have yet to be rewritten. Therefore it theory they would not work at all! But of course Apple needed to do something about this compatability issue or else consumers would not buy the new intel processors.
So Apple created something called Rosetta. Rosetta is an emulator that runs in the background and is always ready to translate PowerPC programs to work on the new intel platform. So, if you had your new MBP and launched photoshop, it would launch like normal. But underneath, Rosetta is enabling this PowerPC program to work on the intel. The problem with this is: a signifigant performance hit. If you ever ran Virtual PC on your powerbook to use windows, you know how slow it can be.
My point in telling you this is that software vendors, such as Adobe, are working to create intel versions of their software so that no Rosetta (thus performance hits) will occur. And since Photoshop and others are still off in the distance, like this coming spring/summer Q2-Q3, I would say why not keep using your Powerbook and wait to upgrade until every program you want to use properly works with intel. By then, you can also probably get the current Core2Due MBP for a steal.
