Migrate to Oracle 11g

Dear All,
Presently we are have a Oracle 10.2.0.2 on HP-UX 11.31 IA64.  We got the Oracle 10g with SAP Sofrware.
Is it advisable to migrate to 11g in next six months?
Thanks in advance,
Nirav

Hi Mark,
this might get off-topic to the inital question.
It was not 11g yes/no and what features to use.
It was: 11g: when? and "why when"?
I only wanted to say, that there CAN be reasons, and this one MIGHT be one
worth to be considered when you need to decide pro/con 11g right now or later.
However, the compression feature is one which is quite frequently disscussed right now
and as as you already are at the real frontside it is very interesting to get additional real
life information about that topic.

Yeah, could be either way, but the test-scenarios around are currently more talking
about the benefit that compressed data is even more data inside the same amount of cache RAM,
so that in fact you will do less IO in average.
Do you say so from messured data from your system, from subjective click-and-feel,
from user-feedback or just some belly-feelings
(which must not be bad, I tend to listen to my belly very carefully )?
I have no data about this at all so I am very curious.

That is a point, I disagree with. For backup it might not be relevant if a tape is
doing compression (allthough it can only be a streaming type like Huffman or
repeated value elimination, or something like that), but for restore it very well makes a
difference if you need to write 2 TB or 6 TB back to your disks.
(even if they are on less spindels)
Curious about your thoughts about this.
Best regards

    I have migrated oracle 10g reports to Oracle 11g reports and generated REP file. But when we execute REP file using RWRUN.EXE I am getting below error.
    ERR REP-50125: rwbuilder.conf:java.lang.NullPointerException
    ERR java.lang.NullPointerException
    to avoid this I tried below work arround which was posted in "https://forums.oracle.com/forums/thread.jspa?threadID=2365028" URL. but not success.
    1. Go to C:\Oracle\Middleware\asinst_1\config\FRComponent\frcommon\tools\admin
    2. Make a backup of the file 'cauprefs.ora'
    3. Open up the file in a text editor:
    --In the file, look for:
    Reports.PluggableDataSourceFactories =
    ("oracle.reports.plugin.datasource.xmlpds.XMLDataSourceFactory",
    "oracle.reports.plugin.datasource.jdbcpds.JDBCDataSourceFactory",
    "oracle.reports.plugin.datasource.textpds.TextDataSourceFactory")
    --Replace the value to: Reports.PluggableDataSourceFactories = ()
    4. Save the file and try running Reports Builder again. Data Model should open up without crashing.
    Could you please help me to resolve this issue.

    When I use rwrun.bat report is not invoking i use below command line. I am executing rwrun.bat from C:\Oracle\Middleware\asinst_1\config\reports\bin path.

  • Vb6 ODBC - Syntax error or access violation in oracle 11g migration

    Hi,
    We have VB6 application with Oracle 10g and the same is working fine.
    Now, we are migrating to Oracle 11g now and we have updated the odbc drivers too.
    { call M_FR(?, ?, ?, ?, ?, ?, ?, ?) }
    L_ID = 890083
    V_ID = 1
    SUB_ID = 6955141
    SUB_SEQ = 1
    P_CODE = 1
    L_SUP_TYPE = 1
    L_REF_NO = 1
    DELETE_REASON_CODE = 1
    When calling the above sp in oracle 11g getting error: [Microsoft][ODBC driver for Oracle]Syntax error or access violation.
    But user has all the right and no issue with access. Also no syntax error. In SQLplus the same is working fine.
    Kindly help us to resolve this issue.
    Regards,
    Sathiya

    Try downloading the latest version of the 8.1.6 driver off OTN.
    That sounds like a bug that was fixed a while ago.

  • Deploy 10g forms and reports in Oracle 11g

    Hi, I'm working in 10g forms and reports development. However, in my company want to migrate to Oracle 11g.
    My doubt is: May I deploy 10g forms and reports in Oracle 11g installation (Weblogis server + Oracle Fusion Middleware)?
    Thanks.

    I downloaded developer suite.does this developer suite includes 10g database also.becoz there are two disks for the developer suite whereas there was only one disk for oracle 10g datbase that i downloaded earlier and installed.if this developer suite includes database,reports and forms then do i need to uninstall the previous data base 10g that i installed.please help me regarding this.

  • Oracle 11g support for JDK 1.4

    Dear All,
    We are planning to migrate from Oracle 10.2.0.3 to Oracle 11.2.0.2. However our application server JDK version is in JDK1.4 and we use ojdbc4.jar for JDBC connectivity.
    Please let me know, to migrate to Oracle 11g requires JDK1.5 and ojdbc1.5 or can we continue to stay at JDK1.4 and uses ojdbc4.jar to connect to Oracle11g.
    Help Appreciated.

    There is only one real answer here: test it and test it thoroughly. Asking this question here is pointless, you cannot trust anyone here to give you advice you can rely on. Whatever is said, you have to validate the claims anyway.
    Or did you think that Oracle employees were going to answer your question? If so, you are sadly mistaken. Oracle charges money for giving technical support.

  • Oracle Tuxedo 8.1 With Oracle 11g Database

    Hi,
    I have an old application that must be compiled with oracle 8.1 and Oracle9i Database.
    We are migrating to Oracle 11g Database, and now we have some inssues to compile with Oracle 11g Database. For example some Libraries that the Tuxedo XA Resource Manager needs from the Oracle Database, that just u can found on older versions like Oracle9i (kpudfo.o file).
    what can be the solution for that problem?
    An Oracle 11g database config or a Tuxedo config ?

    Hi,
    When you say "Tuxedo XA Resource Manager" I'm not sure what you are referring to. Do you mean the Tuxedo transaction management servers (TMS) servers that are built with the buildtms command? If so, if there are linking errors, it has to do with either your library paths or the RM definition for Oracle Database in the $TUXDIR/udataobj/RM file. Tuxedo itself only uses the XA switch from the resource manager such as Oracle database. Now the resource manager may require a bunch of libraries, which is why I suggested you check your library path. If the above doesn't help, can you post the error you are getting and what is generating/creating the error?

  • Migrating from MySQL to Oracle 11g

    can u tell me the steps to migrating database from MySQL to Oracle using SQL Developer?
    I have installed Oracle 11g(11.1.0.6.0) in server and SQl Developer in my local system.
    I connected to MySQL and Oracle in SQL Developer and tried to MIgrate everything in MySQL to Oracle using Quick Migrate option.
    it took one and half day but didn't work at last...
    is there any pre tasks that i need to do before migrating to oracle from MySQL?
    and also when i export the MySQL data to Oracle using SQL Developer,it is giving data type mismatch errors like (date, boolean etc...).
    please give a reply what i need to do and any refferences also very much appreciated.

    hi Turloch ,
    I followed the steps mentioned above.
    When I right click my MySQL server db Connection and click "Capture MySQL server", it just shows a dialog with "Close" enabled.
    after clicking the close button, it gives following error messages.
    oracle.dbtools.metadata.persistence.PersistableObject.doInsert(PersistableObject.java:238)
    the same error is coming no of times.
    Kindly help me in this regard.

  • Oracle 11g Migration performance issue

    Hello,
    There a performance issue with Migration from Oracle 10g(10.2.0.5) to Oracle 11g(11.2.0.2).
    Its very simple statement hanging for more than a day and later found that query plan is very very bad. Example of the query is given below:
    INSERT INTO TABLE_XYZ
    SELECT F1,F2,F3
    FROM TABLE_AB, TABLE_BC
    WHERE F1=F4;
    While looking at cost in Explain plan :
    on 10g --> 62567
    0n 11g --> 9879652356776
    Strange thing is that
    Scenario 1: if I issue just query as shown below, will display rows immediately :
    SELECT F1,F2,F3
    FROM TABLE_AB, TABLE_BC
    WHERE F1=F4;
    Scenario 2: If I create a table as shown below, will work correctly.
    CREATE TABLE TABLE_XYZ AS
    SELECT F1,F2,F3
    FROM TABLE_AB, TABLE_BC
    WHERE F1=F4;
    What could be the issue here with INSERT INTO <TAB> SELECT <COL> FROM <TAB1>?

  • How do I migrate views from MS SQL 2008 to Oracle 11g through SQL Developer

    Is there any way to migrate the views from MS SQL 2008 to Oracle 11g through SQL Developer? Please give me some detail steps. Thanks for your help.

    Hi Turloch,
    When I use migrate to oracle, I got a problem, the migrate tool create a new schema for me in my case (AZTECA_KSMMS), it migrates all the stuffs under that schema (AZTECA_KSMMS). However my application need the all the Oracle data under schema AZTECA instead of AZTECA_KSMMS. Is there any way to specify specific schema (AZTECA) for target oracle database? Schema remapping is available:
    First Capture (separately) then during right click convert on the captured model there is a Specify the conversion options with a Object Naming tab where the schema (and other) name changes are editable.
    I have not used this recently.
    Also during the migration process, when I choose repository, there is a check box for truncate to reset repository to empty state, Do I need to check that truncate Check Box so the repository will be cleared from last migration?The repository can hold multple migration attempts. Check truncate to get rid of previous attempts information. This cleans up the repository - not the destination database.
    There are also online database and offline database options during the migration process, what are the difference between these two choices? After I migrated to Oracle, all my views has a red cross icon next to it. Does that mean the view migration is failed or not? Please give me your comments. Thanks for your help.offline: for big (amount of data) databases with simple data types,
    uses bcp + files + scripts + sqlldr.
    online: for small (amount of data) databases (easier),
    uses (Java) jdbc.
    The view is likely to be broken - recompiling it may help.
    The Oracle schema is created using a .sql file - see under generated in the directory you gave originally in the wizard. There is a .out file that contains the result of running this script including any errors. During conversion there are also likely to be warnings displayed on the UI.
    There may be a single issue that is causing multiple issues - if viewa depends on functionb, and functionb is broken, viewa will also fail.

  • Migrating Sybase code to Oracle 11g

    Hi All,
    We have to migrate Sybase code to Oracle 11g.
    When we are doing a SELECT .. INTO in Sybase , even if the query is returning more than 1 row , sybase selects 1 of the rows and populates the variables.
    But while migrating this code to oracle, we are getting TOO_MANY_ROWS Exception.
    We need to migrate the code from SYBASE to ORACLE without disturbing the logic.
    Can someone please tell me the logic applied by SYBASE to pick up the record?
    And if someone has faced this issue, then what can be done to resolve this.
    Regards,
    Riddhisha Khamesra

    The result 3 is the last entered record (not the amount of records..).
    So the first approach to write a dummy procedure that will select all records in Oracle like:
    CREATE OR REPLACE PROCEDURE last_record
    v_arg1 OUT NUMBER
    AS
    BEGIN
    SELECT col1
    INTO v_arg1
    FROM tt_tmp ;
    END;
    and hopefully returns only the last record will fail with:
    SQL> variable outvar number
    SQL> exec last_record (:outvar)
    BEGIN last_record (:outvar); END;
    ERROR at line 1:
    ORA-01422: exact fetch returns more than requested number of rows
    ORA-06512: at "SYSTEM.LAST_RECORD", line 9
    ORA-06512: at line 1
    One possible approach to get the last (and only the last) record that was entered into the table is to use rownum:
    The select might look like "select col1 from (select col1, rownum from tt_tmp order by rownum desc) where rownum=1;"
    So the procedure can be coded as:
    CREATE OR REPLACE PROCEDURE last_record
    v_arg1 OUT NUMBER
    AS
    BEGIN
    SELECT col1
    INTO v_arg1
    from (select col1, rownum from tt_tmp order by rownum desc) where rownum=1;
    END;
    Now calling it in SQL*Plus:
    SQL> variable outvar number
    SQL> exec last_record (:outvar)
    PL/SQL procedure successfully completed.
    SQL> print :outvar
    OUTVAR
    7
    The value 7 is the last record I've inserted into my tt_tmp table:
    SQL> select * from tt_tmp;
    COL1 COL2
    1 1
    2 2
    8 8
    7 7

  • Link/checklist for migrating applications from Oracle 9i to Oracle 11g?Help

    Hi all,
    We need to perform an impact analysis on migratiing an application from Oracle 9i to Oracle 11g. Does any of you have a detailed checklist to follow, in terms of queries, PL/SQL statements, optimizer etc. etc., when attempting this migration. We require something more specific from the application point of view rather than a DBA point of view.
    Additionally, we have queries written extensively with rule hints. Should there be a special consideration for the same since now we are moving to CBO in 11g
    Even if any one has a link, that would help. Thank you so much!

    Hi Nikhil,
    Thanks Xaheer,You're welcome :)
    I'm going through the link: http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E11882_01/server.112/e10819/toc.htm
    But it still mentions stuff from a DBA angle. I need from an application angle.
    Do I need to change my queries taht are current written with RBO? Do I need to change Pl/SQL blocks ?Please refer tech below notes:

    *2)TESTING SQL PERFORMANCE IMPACT OF AN ORACLE 9i TO ORACLE DATABASE 10g RELEASE 2 UPGRADE WITH SQL PERFORMANCE ANALYZER -- 562899.1*
    Before upgrading your production database, please perform upgrade of test database and do complete testing.

  • Primavera 6.2 SQL Database to Oracle 11g migration

    Hi,
    I used the migration tool to migrate a Primavera 6.2 SQL database to Oracle 11G DB. The migration tool runned successfully and I am able to login to the database using P6.2 client with no problem; however when attemptiong to update the license on the now Oracle database using the privuser account I get the following error "License could not be loaded because of error: List index out of bounds (247). Please make sure that you are using a privileged database login" the error comes up before I can browse to the location of licesne.txt file. Same procedure on a "native" Oracle P6.2 database works perfectly with no problem. Has any one run into this problem before? any help will be appreciated.

    Best Reagrds,I have not seen that specifically but it appears that not all of the grants were correctly applied.
    I would suggest running the schema validation tool which can be found on the knowledgebase as Solution ID: prim75459 as this will tell you what is missing/invalid.
    Once you know that, you can pull the neccesary grants from the create scripts located in the cd1\install\database\scripts folder.

  • DB2 to Oracle 11g migration

    Hi,
    We are migrating the siebel database from DB2 to Oracle 11g.
    While doing the migration, the following values are found for the siebel related tables on DB2.
    for example:
    CREATE TABLE S_SERVICE_SCRPT (
    ROW_ID NVARCHAR2(15) NOT NULL,
    CREATED TIMESTAMP(9) DEFAULT CURRENT TIMESTAMP NOT NULL,
    CREATED_BY NVARCHAR2(15) NOT NULL,
    LAST_UPD TIMESTAMP(9) DEFAULT CURRENT TIMESTAMP NOT NULL,
    LAST_UPD_BY NVARCHAR2(15) NOT NULL,
    MODIFICATION_NUM DECIMAL DEFAULT 0 NOT NULL,
    CONFLICT_ID NVARCHAR2(15) DEFAULT gx'00030' NOT NULL,
    NAME NVARCHAR2(75) NOT NULL,
    PROG_LANG NVARCHAR2(30) NOT NULL,
    REPOSITORY_ID NVARCHAR2(15) NOT NULL,
    Please can anybody provide inputs how to get the equivalent for these gx___ values on Oracle 11g.
    Many thanks in advance

    Found a suitable link at IBM:
    http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/dzichelp/v2r2/index.jsp?topic=/com.ibm.db29.doc.sqlref/db2z_sql_declareglobaltemptable.htm
    gx is the hexadecimal graphic string constant - which is similar to our unistr function.
    Not sure which character is representated by 00030, but here's a method you can use to simply figure out the Oracle equivalent code point.
    First you need to figure out the DB2 character represented by the default value - let's assume it is '@'
    Assuming the NCHAR character set is UTF8 and the NLS character set is WE8MSWIN1252, then you can execute:
    select ascii('@') from dual;
    ASCII('@')
    64
    in SQL*Plus and you'll get the code point 64.
    Convert the 8bit code point to unicode using:
    SQL> select dump(convert(chr(64),'UTF8','WE8MSWIN1252'),16) from dual;
    DUMP(CONVERT(CH
    Typ=1 Len=1: 40
    and you can create the table with the default value represented by the hex value 0040:
    SQL> create table abc (col1 varchar2(20) default '@',
    2 col2 nvarchar2(20) default unistr('\0040'));
    Table created.
    SQL> insert into abc values (default,default);
    1 row created.
    SQL> select * from abc;
    COL1 COL2
    @ @
