Migration Assistant: Problems transferring data from PC (XP SP3) to new Mac Pro 2012 - can not get Migration Assistant to work as PC will not display verfify passcode
Hello, I am having problems migrating data from my old PC running XP (SP3) to my new Mac Pro 2012 using the Migration Assistant.
    - I downloaded and installed the Windows Migration Assistant from Apple
    - My Mac recognized PC and displays passcode
    - The sasscode does not show / display on my PC
    - My Mac is then stuck in "authenticating" loop and the PC is stuck "waiting for Mac to connect."
    - Both computers are connected on same network (have connected PC on WIFI and using ethernet to Reuter)
I have looked on support site and only response I saw says to reinstall Windows Migration Assistant (which I have done)
Any ideas?  If cant get this to workare there instructions for manually bring across relevant data eg itunes music and apps, photos, picasa data etc?

Why not turn off the Windows firewall and uninstall any other firewall software you have installed?
If you are using a Norton product uninstall it and discard it. To fully unistall most Norton products you have to go to the Norton website and download a soecial program to completely get rid of it. The normal uninstall feature built into the program will not remove all of it.

  • Migration Assistant problem? : New iMac's iTunes doesn't see the catalog or playlist of my old Mac's songs on an external drive

    So I just migrated from a 10.7.5 iMac 27" from 2009 to 10.9.4 on a 2013 27" iMac with Fusion Drive.
I don't use Time Machine. There are no backups involved here.
Used Ethernet. Only took 20 hours... (BTW, it stayed on "less than 1 minute left" for like 12 hours but luckily I was away and just left it going in hopes it would work... and it did!)
Anyway, back on my OLD iMac, I kept all of my songs on an external drive because my internal drive was too small. So iTunes looked at that drive for the music it was playing. I turned that drive off, even disconnected it, during the migration process because I thought it was confusing it during the first attempt which took 10 hours and nothing happened.
So now it worked, finally. On my new iMac, running Mavericks, I now have two user accounts... the one that was set up when I started the computer the first time, and the new one that transferred over via Migration Assistant. No problem. I can live with that. The only thing is, I would still think the old XML files and library stuff would migrate over... but iTunes doesn't see it. When I open up iTunes, in *either* account, iTunes behaves as if it's brand new. Repeat: the old and new account on the new iMac, both, do not see an old iTunes library which IS on the old iMac. Only the music is on the external drive from what I understand.
I've done this before so I know it's possible. I remember upgrading a long time ago and got iTunes to see my old library... even though some of the music was no longer there. It just puts "!" marks wherever there is no link. I was hoping that that's what I would find when I launched iTunes, but no luck. Even connecting the old hard drive to the new Mac (via USB) doesn't make iTunes all of a sudden "see" the old library. That data doesn't seem to be there. It didn't transfer over. Did it not transfer over because the songs weren't on the internal volume? Should I have left my external hard drive on?
So.... now that I've spent almost 3 days total trying to get this to work, and everything is running... I don't want to have to start over in order to get iTunes to work.  Is there a way I can just drag over some XML files or something from the old computer? I don't want to lose all of the ratings and personal notes and everything.
I should add also that I have like only four songs I've ever actually bought through iTunes. I'm still a bit old fashioned and buy CDs and rip them to Apple Lossless. So I hope it's not an authorization / reauthorization issue because I have like 1400 albums ripped.
Thanks in advance for any help.
    --Jeff

iTunes does not use the .xml it uses the .itl
If you are sure your old library file migrated across (does the file size and modification dates suggest it has?) start iTunes while holding down the option/alt key and guide it to the .itl file to get it to use that one.

  • Migration Assistant problem: Lion to Lion does not work

Background:I have a 2 year old 15" MBP. I just purchased and tonight am setting up a brand new 27" iMac 2.7Ghz i5.
I upgraded from Snow Leopard to Lion the day it was released on the MBP. A day later, I purchased the iMac which still had Snow Leopard so I used the "up to date" program to get a free version of Lion. I did a clean install of Lion on the iMac since it was brand new.
Problem: I connected the MBP and iMac via Ethernet cables connected to my Airport Extreme. Migration Assistant worked on the initial steps, finding the MBP and matching the authentication codes. After that, I get to the screen where the iMac is looking for files on the MBP and calculating the size of folders to move. On this screen (on the iMac side), an error box pops on and off many times for about a minute then stays there with the following: "Your other Mac stopped responding.    Make sure that all of your network devices are connected and turned on. If you cancel the transfer, use Migration Assistant to complete the transfer later.      Looking for your Mac..." It only gives me the button to "Cancel Transfer"
My connections were fine. I was able to connect until this point. This issue happens whether the connection is Ethernet network via Airport Extreme, both connected via Wifi from the Airport Extreme, or connected directly via Firewire 800. I've tried everything I can think of. No solution and have not found this issue here or on any other forum.  Any ideas?  I really want to use the Migration Assistant route with this. I've use it before on previous Mac's with no issues.

I just talked to the Apple support and they suggested to try the migration using Time Machine. That's was also my idea  this morning so I'm trying to do this now.
For the Apple support I add the repeating part from the console here:

  • Migration Assistant - Problems copying 2009 MacBook Pro data to new MacBook Pro

Purchased new MacBook Pro and tried to copy old MacBook Pro (circa 2009) data to new one using migration assistant.  It stalled after about 20 hours via wireless.  My question is how can I restore the new machine to factory settings and start over?  Or is there a better way to copy the remaining files/applications?  Please note that I've tried to run migration assistant again and it keeps exiting to login screen on the new MacBook Pro - after connection is made.

How much RAM does it have?
In spite of what Apple says, 4GB is not practically adequate with the new 64-bit systems (Lion and successors). All MBPs from Early 2011 forward, with user-installable RAM SO-DIMMs, can take up to 16GB with no problems and with greatly enhanced performance.
And if you still persist in running the systems with 4GB, make sure there's ample paging space on the HDD.

  • Migration Assistant Problem in Mountain Lion

I just purchased a Mac Mini Server (i7 quad core with 16GB memory and 2 750GB drives).  The machine seems to work well and is quite fast.  My problem is when I try to migrate everything off of my Macbook Air 13" using Migration Assistant.  With both computers (Mac OS X 10.8) connected to the same LAN segment (either wired or by 802.11n) and apparently talking on the LAN properly (no packet loss on pinging the host router), I follow the on-screen propmts for MA and the source computer is found.  When I start the migration though, I consistently get a dialogue on the "to" machine (Mac Mini) that states that the MacBook has "stopped responding" and the whole process hangs up.  Exiting the MA apps on both sides reveals that each machine appears to work normally on the network with no indication of LAN communication issues.  Has anyone seen this behaviour or have any practical solutions to suggest?

Use Disk Utility on both to Verify the Drives, what does it report?

  • Migration assistant problems - 10.4.11 to 10.6.4

We just purchased a new Mac Mini (10.6.4) to replace the old Mini (10.4.11). I've tried to do the Migration Assistant multiple times this week.  I can get as far as the "transferring data" message with a progress bar and a time estimate. The problem: After 5-12 hours, the time never changes! Today I even tried transferring just a few files - 1.6GB - just to see if it would work better with fewer files. The time estimate told me it would take 13 min. After 5 hours (we left the house), the time estimate had changed...to 26 minutes!  What am I doing wrong?
Here's what I've done so far:
    - Updated OS software on source computer.
    - Installed 2008 Migration DVD CD share software update (running 1.0.6 on the source computer)
    - Both computers are set to never sleep or go into energy saver mode. Even turned off screen savers.
    - Connected computers via Firewire 400/800 cable - 5 or 6 attempts with no progress
    - Also tried wireless connection - 2 attempts, both time network connection failed.
    - Tried the "Internet Sharing" instructions on the Apple Support site. Didn't work either.
    - Source harddrive mounts on new computer's desktop. When I double click on it to try manually transferring....new computer freezes up and I get the never-ending spinning circle.
I'm only trying to transfer about 50GB. Judging from others' posts, that should take me 2-3 hours. Right? I've run migration assistant on other computers before and never had any trouble. Is there some update I'm missing? What am I doing wrong?
    Thanks for your help!

rather than migration assistant, use setup assistant - even if it means going for the "second chance" per this user tip.

  • Migration Assistant Problem: Old MacBook Pro does not see new MacAir

I have a brand new MacAir (OSX 10.7 and a 4 year old Macbook Pro (OSX 10.6)...trying to use Migration Assistant using Wifi, they're both on my network, but the new MacAir can "see" the old Macbook, but the old Macbook doesn't "see" the new MacAir...the wheel just keeps spinning as it tries to find another computer to migrate to but it just never sees it.  What am I doing wrong or what can I do to fix this problem?  Thanks!

Sounds like there are two issues:
    1.  The Migration should start from the "To" computer asking for the stuff from the "From" computer.  Sounds like you're doing it the other way.
    2.  The MacBook Air isn't visible.  Correct that by going to System Preferences ---> Sharing on your MacBook Air and see if things look good there.  You should at least see a message near the top starting with "Computers on your local network can access your computer ..."

  • Migration assistant problem w/ Itunes not opening

I just bought a new IMac with 2 HD. 1 solid state 256G and 1 regular 1TB drive. I tried to transfer all my information from my Macbook aluminuim with no firewire using the migration assistant with my last update copy of the time machine backup in an external drive. I went Ok, however the installation was done in the 256 D and went almost full (it never appeared and option of where to install) My intention is to have the system and applications on the Solid State and the rest in the 1TB.  I create a new user folder on the 1TB and copy with the finder all the files and folders of my user. Then I change in account the path of the user folder to the new one. Corroborate it on the finder and delete the original user on the solid state. Applications and system remain on the solid state. Then I change all the rights and privileges of folders in library and system to my user giving full permition. It worked fine since I could open correctly agenda, mail and ical. However, I have problems in Itunes. When i tried to open it it says it cannot be done for the permition. When I look up for Itunes folders rights It doesnt appear my user and when I try to change this (as in the rest of the folders) doesnt give me even the option of doing it. I tried to download a new Itunes but then when trying to open the dmg. it says that the installer is corrupt. Any ideas in how to fix this?

Hmmm...that is an interesting question. It shuts down now, but would not before? Perhaps Norton was busy doing something. To be totally honest, I hate Norton, its expensive and a HUGE memory hog. My PC ran much slower when I was using Norton. Since removing it and going to a free antivirus program, it has speeded up tremendously.
Depends on what you disabled during MSCONFIG. Whatever you disabled was most likely the culprit to that as well.

  • HT1338 Migration assistant problems setting up new Macbook pro.... System preferences will not open and Mozilla products do not open "profile missing"???

Used migration assistant to set up new Macbook pro from old macbook pro. Many "profile" problems.
Will not even open "System Preferences" for user whose profile info was transferred. (Will for "Administrator")
Cannot use Firefox or Thunderbird, profile missing.
    Help???

Launch the Console application by entering the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search, and look under "User Diagnostic Reports" for crash logs related to the application(s). Select the most recent one and post the contents -- the text, please, not a screenshot. For privacy’s sake, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report.

  • Migration Assistant problem with FW

I'm trying to use migration assistant to transfer a friend's file from her old PowerBook G4 with Panther to her new MacBook Pro (probably an early 2009 model) with SL 10.6.8, via FireWire (400 on the Panther end, 800 on the SL end).
Unfortunately, I made the mistake of making her a user account before starting this process. It didn't work, even when I gave it a "new" account name to transfer the files to (not interested in the applications or settings). The folder structure is created, but all the folders are empty.
I then tried creating a new admin account, deleted her personal account and tried Migration Assistant again. Same problem.
When I try to use Finder to look at the folders on the source machine, they all have a little red minus icon (as did the "transferred" folders); I am unable to browse them.
I have done a permissions verify on both machines and repaired them where necessary.
Sharing is turned on on both machines and the firewall is turned off. I could get the files off using a thumb drive but would prefer to just do it with the $40 cable I purchased yesterday. Panther has all its latest updates, as does SL (with the exception of a couple of iLife '11 updates, which I assume would have no effect on Migration Assistant; the internet connection here is abysmal, so I put off the iLife updates for the time being).
The Panther installation is only a couple of months old -- her OS was pretty much trashed, so I wiped it and reinstalled everything. (I suspect this may have had something to do with multiple OS updates over the 10+ years of its life.) The SL machine has probably never had a fresh install since it was new. there really isn't much I need to preserve on it, but my friend's obviously eager to start using the new machine and can make do without her documents until I solve the problem.
Any suggestion of what other steps to take to troubleshoot this would be appreciated!

I concur about the workaround. Just proves that if you read long enough, you don't have to sit the same amount of time on a help line. One advantage of using the Migration Assistant manually is that you get an estimate of the time required. I just completed the same procedure with IMacs (one of which had Core 2 Duo cpu's)—I was impressed by how smoothly it went, but had only the progress-indicator to suggest where I was in the process.

  • Migration Assistant Problems with new iMac

I just bought a new iMac. Used firewire to connect to old iMac running 10.5.8. Followed instructions to reboot old iMac holding down the "T". Receiving this error on new iMac: "There are no versions of Mac OSX available on your old mac. You can only transfer information from a mac that has OSX installed." This is obviously not correct. How can I get my new iMac to recognize the old iMac and transfer the data? Thanks

I actually chose option 1 as I was migrating from another mac. I'll try option 2. Another question: Does the fact that I'm migrating from an older G3 (circa 2003) affect the migration?
it could. it should still work though. such migration works ok for most people but but you may have compatibility problems afterward due to differences in architecture and OS versions (what do you have on the G3? 10.3?). I would suggest you choose to migrate your user data only. don't migrate applications. many won't work in snow leopard and can lead to conflicts. also, see this link on potential issues you may face
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=435350&tstart=0
that link suggest doing manual migration.
I would still try using migration assistant first. if that gives you problems you can always do wipe and install and migrate manually.

  • HT3231 Migration Assistant problem

How do I migrate data from a PowerBook G4 running Max OS X 10.4.11 to a MacBook Pro running Mac OS X 10.8?
The MacBook Pro keeps telling me I have to update the Migration Assistant on the PowerBook, but I can't!

    Laura,
Please let me know, if the target disk mode worked for you - pretty much have the same problem. I did what Wjosten proposed and connected my Powerbook G4 with a firewire cable and started it in target disk mode. The connection works - I have no problem seeing my target disk on my new Macbook Pro and I can open any file on the target disk. But still, when I start the migration assistant, it  does not recognize the disk - it has been really frustrating to me. Please let me know, if you came up with a solution. I asked this question yesterday in a separate thread but got no answer...
    Thanks

  • How do I get rid of Norton Internet Security?  Migration assistant problem

I have a new MacBook Pro and I used a firewire connection and migration assistant to transfer files. Unfortunately, the assistant transferred all my applications, even the ones I didn't want, like Norton Internet Security, which slowed down my old G4. I deleted all the Norton files, but there are still icons for Norton Auto protect and Norton Quick Menu on my System Preferences menu. I'm afraid they are responsible for the messages I get on booting up saying the system detects Norton but can't open the application. I'm also afraid its the reason that suddenly my new superfast MacPro is less fast. I can't figure out how to delete it from the system preferences - any ideas?

Please let me reassure you. There are NO viruses effecting OSX to date. There was one virus effected OS9 ten years ago, but nothing since. The fear of viruses is a residual effect from using that other OS, which shall remain nameless, but not shameless. The only danger a Mac user faces is, spreading a virus through a network by forwarding junk emails with an infected attachment, not that anybody is that stupid, or are they? If you are using one of the main email providers, Yahoo, Hotmail, Gmail, etc, all he attachments are scanned automatically as these organizations cannot afford to have viruses in their systems.
In a nutshell: Relax and enjoy the freedom of using a Mac.
Furthermore: Most ex-users of the nameless OS feel the need to run defrag programs on Macs. Unnecessary! Just leave your Mac turned on overnight and it will do it itself.
You may remember the Mac slogan, 'Think Differently'. Well, Macs do!
    Enjoy your clean install.

  • Migration Assistant Problems iMac/Leopard to Brand New iMac/Lion

Ok, I have scoured the discussions over this issue, done permissions repair/verify on both systems, all software is updated, etc. I'm at a loss.
I just purchased a new iMac 27" quad core... all I want to do is transfer my files using migration assistant. I have read there are many who are having issues with this...I have been trying since thursday night! I've called apple twice, nothing they advise seems to be working. I am trying to transfer using eithernet, and while I have an firewire cord it's not the correct type (it works on my old 20" iMac - running 10.5.8), so right now that is what it is. It gets to the end, and the time starts creeping back up again... I was down to 10 mins and it went back up to 3 hours+ and this was after me attempting to do the migration for 12+ hrs overnight. I also have a macbook and I am encountering the SAME issues while it's transfering the applications folder/info. It was down to 9 mins and then climbed back up to 2hrs & 15mins... and still climbing. This attempt started over 3 hours ago. The macbook has way less applications installed so I am forseeing that this is not a good sign.
Aside from trying to manually reinstall EVERYTHING, (ARGH!!!) do I have ANY other options? (or what peice of equipment do I need to drop-kick? lol)
The nearest mac store is over an hour away...

Sorry to be grouchy but you ignored the best opportunity to migrate when you initially turned on your new Mac. When you start up a new Mac it starts Setup Assistant, one of the steps asks if you want migrate from another Mac. In your case you must have chosen no and are now using Migration Assistant. MA and SA are basically the same tool however MA will create a new user account whereas SA will not. As for the connection that is easily solved by getting the correct FireWire cable. You need one like this one from Amazon. You can find these at any computer store, Best Buy, Walmart, Radio Shack or of course Amazon.
My suggestion to you once you get the right cable is to start over. How you do that is by following the suggestions in Lion Setup Assistant tips, this is a helpful guide prepared by Pondini who is one of the more generous posters on this site. Begin where he talks about Second Chance......

  • Migration Assistant Problem

Bought a new iMac 24" 2.66 GHz. Tried to run Migration Assistant via Firewire from old iMac (Power PC G4 OSX 10.4.11). Tried it in the initial set up but didn't work. Then tried it after initial set up of new Mac and was prompted that I needed to change the name of the account in order to migrate since the main account on my old and new computers was the same. Didn't seem like I had another option. Transferred data but it is stored in a separate account from the main one I used to set up the new computer, and I have to log out of the main account to the other account to see it. Is there any way to make these 2 separate accounts to talk to each other? Should I just forget the initial account and use the new account even though the computer is set up through the initial account? Should I just find a way to start over and restore factory settings?
Friends say Migration Assistant works seemlessly but this has been anything but.
