Migration of a database from sql server 2008 r2 to oracle 11 g
We're trying to migrate a Sql server managment studio database to Oracle 11g using SQL Developer 4.0. We can successfully connect to both Sql server managment studion 8.0 and Oracle 11g using the tool, as well as click through the Migration Wizard and start the migration.
This opens the Database Migration dialog box, which indicates the capture process starts normally. we get the following error:
ora :01440 : can not insert null into migrlog (id column) ,
\and then after some time , i get an error that migration failed
I know , that we vcan nt insert null into migrlog table , then pls tell me how can i resolve fro this problem . is there any way to solve it,
i am not getting the reason,I thing it may be due to reason that , I have table's column in my source db with more than 30 character.
If i am migrating one by one table . then it is not giving any error, and identifier name is getting shrink in 30 character. but i am not getting the view , stored procedure , indexes , and others
then what is the solution for that, somebody pls suggest any help?????????????
This forum is dealing with Oracle gateway connecting to a foreign database. When connecting with SQL Server LINKED Server mechanism to Oracle you're using the Oracle OLEDB driver and there's a separate thread that assist you with the Oracle OLEDB driver. Migration from SQL SERVER 2008 to Oracle 10g issues.
Hi ,
I'm trying to migrate from SQL Server 2008 to Oracle 10g and I end up with some issues that I wanted to ask some info about it.
First, I was following a tutorial
http://st-curriculum.oracle.com/obe/db/hol08/sqldev_migration/mssqlserver/migrate_microsoft_sqlserver_otn.htm
and and in the last version of Oracle SQL developer I downloaded, I didn't find the Load Database Capture Script Output option.
My first question is how can I either add this option or is there a new way to load the capture script ?
Then I use the migration wizard and after following everything, I had the migration complete message from the application.
When I tried to open my connectionss, it tells me version 11.2 is required. Does that mean that Oracle SQL developper 3 only
do the migration for oracle 11g? And if I tried the previous versions, it doesn't support SQL server 2008.
What do I do in this case ?
Thanks !Thank you for your reply.
After using the wizard and made the offline migration script, in the Migration projects window I made a move data to the oracle connection I previously made and after when I tried to reopen the connection, I couldn't.
Well I didn't retry it yet to see if I'll have the same behavior but basically this is what I think I did. When I tried to open the connection I made, it says, Oracle 11.2 is required.
Now, I just generate target from the convert model and it says migration complete but how do I test it and I do I go to oracle and see change ?
Do I had to create a special user in SQL Server to log to it first ? How do I logon to it ?

How to Migrate my database from SQL Server 2000 to Oracle
I want to transfer my database from SQL Server 2000 to Oracle, Can I do this without using Oracle Migration Workbench ??
Please help me.
Thanks in advance
Vicky... :-)Do you have a good technical reason for not wanting to use the Migration Workbench?
Given that it's free and does a hell of a lot of the work for you, why wouldn't you use it?
Other than that, I would say you would be on your own...

Migration from SQL Server 2008 to Oracle 11g
Hi there,
I have a quick question, Anyone who have experienced to migration procedures, function from SQL Server 2008 to 11g R2. Is it possible? I migrated tables and views through Oracle heterogenious servinces but I am not sure about the fucntions and procedures.
Any help would be appreciated.
Warm regards,Automated conversions are possible. After these conversions the system will pretty much run. However, and it can be a pretty big HOWEVER, performance could well take a hit - which the uninitiated or SQL Server acolytes will seek to blame on Oracle not being very good. This is not actually the case.
You could be in for a major review and rewrite. Besides the syntax differences in the procedural languages, there is a huge - like really huge - difference in transaction control, isolation, and read consistency. Basically, keep in mind that Oracle reads do not block writes, writes do not block reads, and there are no dirty reads. Writes only block other writes. Thus, no coding 'tricks' are needed to get around these blockers. Oracle has global temporary tables that are generally used to help out those converting from SQL Server. In actuality, then are mostly not needed as you can almost always do your work in one SQL statement.
Read the concepts guide from cover to cover, then do it again, then start looking at what you need to do to convert your procedural code. -
I am investigating the impact of upgrading from SQL Server 2008 R2 to SQL Server 2012. To reduce the impact of the upgrade, I am planning to restore / create our application database onto SQL Server 2012 with compatibility level 100 (SQL Server 2008 and
SQL Server 2008 R2).
Are there any differences in feature support for database running in native mode on SQL Server 2008 R2 vs a database installed on SQL Server 2012 with compatibility level 100 set?Are there any differences in feature support for database running in native mode on SQL Server 2008 R2 vs a database installed on SQL Server 2012 with compatibility level 100 set?
Yes there can be difference and impact there are few features deprecated in SQL Server 2012 you must be aware about that. Please see
Deprecated Database Features in SQL Server 2012
Deprecated SQL Server features in SQL Server 2012
After you migrate database to 2012 please don't move ahead with production unless you have tested your application to new created database

Edited by: 873127 on Jul 18, 2011 9:46 PMAre you migrating or taking continual updates?
If migrating it might be worth considering The SQLDeveloper Migration Workbench (which moves more than just data)..

I need it very very urgetnt.
Best Regards,
Sudhir.I understand that it would not be in the best interests of Oracle, monetarily that is (at least in the visible/tangible sense), to develop such a migration tool, but since the competition hasn't, why shouldn't you? I'm sure Prabha's not the first to inquire of such a thing, and I'm sure I'd have asked a similar question if I wasn't responding to you in this way. We all know Oracle is the better db - That's why we're here talking about it - but not everyone we do business with understands that, so establishing a two way street is the best way, short of requiring it of our clients, to turn them on to Oracle. I don't really think developing such a thing would hurt your business (unless MS can keep you from doing it). If your product is that much better (which we agree is true), you shouldn't be afraid of the competition. As for being afraid of proprietary constraints, I can't blame you, because I don't know how much it constrains you.

My first reaction to your question would be "why would anyone want to migrate FROM Oracle and TO SQLServer ?". Oracle is easily the better database !
...but no, I don't really think it would be in Oracle's best interests to produce a migration tool that moved users to a propritory Microsoft product/platform..<HR></BLOCKQUOTE>

Moving database from mssql server 2008 R2 to mssql server 2012
Dear Guru!
I am trying to move a database from mssql server 2008 R2 on mssql server 2012. Made a backup in mssql server management studio, tried to
make a restore in mssql 2012 management studio. But get an error
'The operating system returned the error '5 (Access denied) '. How can I solve the problem?Use ALTER TDATABASE MODIFY if you want to rename files and sp_renamedb if you want to rename the db itself

How to delete the Folder from sql server 2008
Hi all,
I was trying to delete the folder from sql server 2008 with the below script
DECLARE @path VARCHAR(256) -- path for backup files
DECLARE @cmd VARCHAR(8000)
DECLARE @folderName VARCHAR(256) -- filename for backup
SET @folderName = + (CONVERT(varchar(10), GETDATE()-7, 112)) -- 7 days back date folder name
SET @path = 'I:\Backup_Test\' + @folderName -- Folder path
SET @cmd = 'del ' + @path -- Delete
EXEC master..xp_cmdshell @cmd
--Print @cmd
This is not working it was asking the Confirmation (I:\Backup_Test\20100629\*, Are you sure (Y/N)? ) what will i do to the delete the folder.
Thanks,
Prasad R.I would notice you that T-SQL does not play well to do things like that. Do not you want using .net language to delete folders?
Old method is
declare @HR int, @CFOLDER varchar(255),@FSO int
set @CFOLDER='D:\folder\'
EXEC @HR = sp_OACreate 'Scripting.FileSystemObject', @FSO OUT
EXEC @HR = sp_OAMethod @FSO, null, 'DeleteFolder', @CFOLDER
Now regarding to your second question please examine xp_fileexist system stored procedure
CREATE FUNCTION dbo.fn_file_exists(@filename VARCHAR(300))
RETURNS INT
AS
BEGIN
DECLARE @file_exists AS INT
EXEC master..xp_fileexist @filename, @file_exists OUTPUT
RETURN @file_exists
END
GO
-- test
SELECT dbo.fn_file_exists('c:\a.txt')

Migration from SQL Server 7.0 to Oracle 8.0.5
Can we migrate from SQL Server 7.0 to Oracle 8.0.5 directly without being converted to Oracle 8i objects
Hi,
U can convert from sql server to Oracle 8 but u've to look after the stored procedures in mssql server. If the stored procedures contains any temporary table concepts and resultset then some manual changes are required.
Thanx,
Durai.
