Migration to OX Server from Linux HA Cluster

Hello. I'm not sure if this is the correct forum for this topic, but I am looking for some friendly opinions on a possible solution to my organization's infrastructure. Basically I am looking to consolidate resources and reduce energy usage.
I currently operate our entire organization with 10 servers. They are broken down like this:
2-CentOS-5: Running in Active/Passive HA. Hosts Apache 2.0 and MySQL 5. Data and config files replicated by DRBD.
2-CentOS-5: Running in Active/Passive HA with 6-500gb RAID 5 SATA Drives. These systems are set up to host NFS Shares. Data and config files replicated by DRBD. MySQL is also installed as a Replicating Slave from the previous mentioned servers.
2-CentOS-5: Running in Active/Passive HA for an Asterisk VOIP Phone System. Config files replicated by DRBD. All voice recordings are sent via a NFS mount to the previous mentioned NFS Servers. All MySQL entries are made to the Main MySQL Server.
1-CentOS-5: Mail Filter
1-Redhat-4: Mail/LDAP/Samba Domain Controller
1-Windows 2003: Enterprise Application Server
1-Windows 2003: Terminal Services
None of these servers are tasked out by any means. My server rack is full, the electric required to run them and the AC to keep them cool is high.
So, I was thinking about purchasing 2 Mac XServe Servers. I wanted to do the following. Can anyone validate the configuration? Or do I not understand the capabilities of the OS X Server?
Both XServes would be built like this: Dual 2.8 quad core, 16GB RAM with 3x1TB SATA Discs in RAID 5.
My goal is to utilize OS X Server’s HA across the two servers to handle:
Web Services (Apache 2)
MySQL 5 (Master Node)
Email Server
Calendaring Server
Samba Domain Controller (For Windows Clients)
File Storage
Will HA work for the services I mentioned using OS X Server easily?
Then, on the first XServe (XS1) I would install 2 virtual machines (No HA – just snap shots taken for backup):
VMA – CentOS5 – MySQL (Slave Node)
VMB – Windows 2003 – Enterprise Apps
Then, on the second XServe (XS2) I would install 2 virtual machines (No HA – just snap shots taken for backup):
VMC – Windows 2003 – Terminal Services
VMD – Windows 2003 – More Enterprise Apps
My concern/question is really mostly about the “File Storage” I referenced. As I mentioned above I currently have a HA NAS Server that each of my other linux servers mount via NFS. Is this something that Xsan 2 could do between the two XServe servers? If so, does that mean that I could store the virtual machine images on the NAS created by Xsan 2? And, if so, do I NEED to have a fiber switch? Or could I simply utilize fiber directly between the two servers?
Am I crazy for wanting to do this? Am I missing something? I am thinking I must be, that is why I am posting!
Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that the Asterisk VOIP System will remain on its current hardware.

as far as i know, you'd need xsan nodes for all machines involved and san storage shared among all nodes. ideally, you'd need primary and secondary xsan metadata controllers just to deal with san metadata, and they should not be your od master or replica.
you could probably skimp on hardware and double up services on each machine, but it probably wouldn't save you much in the short term, at least.
how about moving to more power efficient processors for your current setup? your network as it is now sounds exactly like what some of my clients would love to have, but it would take a lot of cash to build with apple hardware/software.

  • Connecting to Microsoft SQL Server from Linux

    Hi,
I am currently trying to migrate an OBIEE deployment from Windows to Linux, I have found much information about connection to Oracle DBs but I cannot find out how to connect to a Microsoft SQL Server DB. I have my webcat and RPD transferred but see ODBC errors for all of the reports, can anyone help?
    Thanks in advance.

I eventually solved this using UnixODBC and FreeTDS, I have yet to complete my own write-up of the solution but I found that someone else had solved the problem at more-or-less the same time and has written up the solution here:

If anyone finds this in the future and has questions please feel free to get in touch, I get email when this thread is updated so that should be enough. Thanks to Damon for putting me on the right track.

  • Data services job failes while insert data into SQL server from Linux

SAP data services (data quality) server is running on LInux server and Windows. Data services jobs which uses the ODBC driver to connect to SQL server is failing after selecting few thousand records with following reason as per data services log on Linux server. We can run the same data services job from Windows server, the only difference here is it is using SQL server drivers provided by microsoft. So the possible errors provided below, out of which #1 and #4 may not be the reason of job failure. DBA checked on other errors and confirmed that transaction log size is unlimited and system has space.
Why the same job runs from Windows server and fails from Linux ? It is because the ODBC drivers from windows and Linux works in different way? OR there is conflict in the data services job with ODBC driver.

  • Migrate MOSS 2007 Server from Server 2003 (32-bit) to Server 2008

I have a client with MOSS 2007 installed on Windows Server 2003, and a database server (SQL 2005) also on Server 2003. they have two new Windows Server 2008 servers, and they wish to do a migration.  They have custom Features, including Event Receivers
    installed in their environment.
Do I need to install the 32-bit edition of MOSS 2007 on the new server in order to be able to use the pre-compiled custom Features used in the current server?
My plan is to do the following:
    (a)  Migrate databases from current database server (SQL 2005) to new database server (SQL 2008),
    (b)  Re-assign SQL redirection to new database server (the database was previously on the same box as the WFE, and this was separated out last year to another server, but redirecting the SQL Server,
    (c)  Install MOSS 2007 (32-bit) on the other new server
    (d)  Patch both instances of MOSS 2007 to the same point
    (e)  Create (dummy) site collection on new server, and install all custom Features on server
    (f)  Add new server to existing Farm
    (g)  Remove previous server from Farm
What must I do to install existing custom Features on new server?
Is there anything that I have left out of the process?  Do I need to do anything about the SSP running on the current server?

    Thanks Keith for your reply.
Even is USMT does not work, we are ok. SMIGdeploy will be helpful.
Basically, want MDT to run some scripts on the Windows 2003 server, post which install Windows 2012 and join it to the existing domain with the same computer name.
Then hydration kit to help with the installation of features etc. Also, we would like to take a complete backup to a WIM before migrating.
I am sure this is workable.

  • How to migrate DNS, DHCP Server from 2003 to 2012

    Hi all,
I have one old server running server 2003, and i need to migrate the dns and dhcp server to server 2012.
I found all the articles, there are only migrate from 2003 to 2008 or 2008 to 2012.
Is there anyway to migrate it?
    Thanks.

Really confused why the "answer" to this thread states it can't be done, when clearly it can.  This is the official approach (article dated Oct 2013):
Migrate DHCP Server to Windows Server 2012 R2
Within, you'll see that it says:
This guide provides instructions for migration of a DHCP server from a server that is running Windows Server 2003 or a later operating system to a server running Windows Server 2012 R2. Supported operating systems are listed in the following table.

  • Encoding issue with pages serving from Linux Apache to Firefox

    Hi,
I had a problem last year where my help files displayed as a blank page with a question mark when they were served from a Linux Apache Server to Firefox. All other browsers displayed the content perfectly fine.
I discovered that the issue had something to do with encoding. From what I understood at the time: RH 8 outputs in UTF-8 but Apache prefers UTF-16 so it tries to modify the page. Net result: Firefox can't interpret the page. I apologise if my description is terrible I never fully got my head around the issue.
To cut a long story short: I was able to fix this by chaging the encoding information at the top of each page from <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8" ?> to <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-16" ?>
My client has produced a new version of their software this year and for some reason my Help doesn't work again, even with modified encoding information. I am assured that the Apache web server has not changed.
    Does anybody have any suggestion?
    Many thanks,
    Alex

I think this is what I posted last year.
    This is what I was
advised by the company hosting my site.
    "I would therefore
conclude that the solution to this problem (on Linux systems running Apache) is
to add the AddDefaultCharset utf-8 directive to either the Apache config or the
site .htaccess file. The advantage of the latter is that it only affects individual
sites. The default Apache character set is taken from the locale file on Linux
and defaults to iso-8859-1. It is the conflict between the Apache header with
iso-8859-1 and the page character set of utf-8 that obviously causes Firefox a
    problem."
    In a forum post
    Chrissy_Tissy added
    My machine is
Windows, but this fix still worked  -
some notes about making the fix visible:
    1. Do the fix itself
    (httpd.conf: AddDefaultCharset utf-8).
    2. Restart the box
    to apply the fix.
    3. Once the box is
restarted, clear your cache in FireFox to make sure you don't continue to see
    the cached file.
    Once all this is
done you will see the output content as expected.
There is a tool to change the encoding but that does nothing more than you have already done. Maybe showing your client the above will persuade them to change things at their end.

  • How do I migrate a FAX server from 2008 R2 to 2012 R2

So I assume I'm connected, but I'm not sure. However, when I run "isql -v baew-cms01 <user> <password>" again substituting user and password, I get:
    Hello Jack,
Yes, when you get such a "1>" prompt, then you are connected to SQL Server.
Please note, isql is deprecated, better use SqlCmd. But if you want to use iSql, then you have to use the -S Parameter for the Server Name, not -v. See isql Utility for all

  • Migration of Content Server from win2k3 to win2k8

    Hello,

URL check for the Contenet Server is also working.
We wanted to migrate from Content Server windows 2003 server to Windows 2008 server.
In the process we have successfully taken the Back up of Content Server on win2k3 server and restored it on win2k8 server.

Now,i wanted to know what are the steps to be follwoed after the successfull restore.
How to create Respository and regarding of ContentServer.ini file and security folder settings ( they need to be copied and if yes when?).
Please help with your suggestions or giving out some referenece documents.

It depends largely on how you have installed Content Server but if you check the [Operating Manual for SAP Content Server|http://help.sap.com/erp2005_ehp_04/helpdata/EN/8c/e9ddbb5d9a524bbb7854d31b963248/frameset.htm] -> Special Procedures ...it should give enough info for your requirements.

  • Windows to Linux Migration for Apps Server - 11.5.10

    Hello all,
Am trying to migrate our app server from WIndows 2000 to RH Linux. Am using the metalink doc id 238276.1 for this. Am encountering an error
"RC-00216: The Context File does not exist. Exiting."
Am not able to proceed any further. Have verified file path and permissions. Have setup some parts of the environment on the target with path for AD_TOP, APPL_TOP, CONTEXT etc.
Has anyone completed such a migration successsfully? Any pointers will be greatly appreciated.
    Regards,
    Vijay

    Hi Vijay,
    Yes I have.
What is the java and perl version being used?
    1 - which java
    2 - java --version
    3 - which perl
    4 - per --version
The contextfile has been copied from the windows system does it have the correct permissions? Open the file and check if you see ^M (they should not exist)
You are executing the command as follows:
    perl /data/hrtc/hrtcappl/ad/11.5.0/bin/adclonectx.pl migrate java=/usr contextfile=/data/hrtc/hrtcappl/admin/hrtc1_hrdev.xml
    try:
    cd /data/hrtc/hrtcappl/ad/11.5.0/bin/
    perl adclonectx.pl migrate java=/usr contextfile=/data/hrtc/hrtcappl/admin/hrtc1_hrdev.xml
Also the location of JDK_TOP (/usr) seems a bit strange to me.....as I would expect something like /usr/jdk1.3.x/
    Thanks!

I'm using NPS for wired dot1x authentication and I just migrated my NPS server from 2008 R2 to 2012 R2.  When I point the network switch to start using the new 2012 R2 NPS as the RADIUS server, I get authentication failures - event 6273, reason code

used the MS prescribed migration process.  The only thing that differs is the server's certificate name used in the PEAP setup screen.
I'm using computer authentication only, so everything is based on computer accounts and I've selected to NOT validate server credentials on the group policy.
I've verified the shared secrets multiple times.  Both servers are domain controllers.

    Hi,
Have you added the NPS server to the RAS and IAS Servers
    security group in AD DS?
The NPS server needs permission to read the dial-in properties of user accounts during the authorization process.
Try to add a loal user on the NPS server, then test with the local user. If it works, it means that there is something wrong between NPS and DC.
If the issue persists, it means that the configuration between NPS and NAS is wrong.
