Milestone HUP /  post-milestone dependency failure?

Ok, I know that's a horrible subject line. Please bear with me.
I've been playing with the dependency mechanisms in b72, and have been unable to get an online milestone offlined by disabling a service upon which that milestone depends.
Disabling cron at the single-user milestone prevents
# svcadm -v milestone svc:/milestone/multi-user:default
from succeeding: svcs -a \*milestone\* shows the multi-user milestone is offline, svcs -xv says why, everything works as advertised.
Dandy.
A slightly different test is to cleanly come up to the multi-user milestone with cron enabled, show that the milestone was reached, and cron is online, and then disable cron.
The milestone is still reported as online, although it has lost a dependency. I guess milestones are... milestones, not states, per se, but it would be nice to demonstrate SMF noticing a subsequent dependency failure.
$ svcs | grep mil
disabled 9:41:17 svc:/milestone/multi-user-server:default
online 9:41:27 svc:/milestone/devices:default
online 9:41:32 svc:/milestone/single-user:default
online 10:48:41 svc:/milestone/name-services:default
online 10:48:51 svc:/milestone/multi-user:default
$ svcadm -v disable cron
svc:/system/cron:default disabled.
$ svcs | grep mil
disabled 9:41:17 svc:/milestone/multi-user-server:default
online 9:41:27 svc:/milestone/devices:default
online 9:41:32 svc:/milestone/single-user:default
online 10:48:41 svc:/milestone/name-services:default
online 10:48:51 svc:/milestone/multi-user:default
I've tried to nudge SMF by calling restart on the mult-user milestone, but no joy:
$ svcadm -v restart svc:/milestone/multi-user:default
Action restart set for svc:/milestone/multi-user:default.
$ svcs | grep mil
disabled 9:41:17 svc:/milestone/multi-user-server:default
online 9:41:27 svc:/milestone/devices:default
online 9:41:32 svc:/milestone/single-user:default
online 10:48:41 svc:/milestone/name-services:default
online 11:26:02 svc:/milestone/multi-user:default
$ svcs -a | grep cron
disabled 10:59:53 svc:/system/cron:default
From this state going all the way down to single-user and then attempting to get back up into multi-user fails, as it should. But that feels a lot like
# init s
# init 3
with fingers crossed.
So, two questions:
Is there a svcadm command that will effectively HUP a current milestone?
Is there no simple way to tell before the fact that a milestone is unreachable, or that a currently achieved milestone will not be achieved next time around?
Thank you for reading this far!
cheers,
kidari

There are characteristics to the dependencies within smf(5): grouping, which has to do with the set of entities and their necessity, and restart_on, which has to do with event propagation across the dependency link. If you use svcs -l on milestone/multi-user:deafult,
you will get:

  • Solved: 'ppp' Dependency Failure

    Hi,
When I tried updating 'pacman -Syu' today, a dependency failed involving 'archboot ppp rp-pppoe'. I removed the packages related to the issue before I updated, but when I tried to re-install:

Before the update, I had installed:
    ppp 2.4.6-2
    rp-pppoe 3.11-5
Is ppp=2.4.6 indeed a dependency of 'rp-pppoe', or can it be a higher version? The page for rp-pppoe says ppp=2.4.7 as a dependency, which is different than what pacman says. Why not use >=?
Could anyone provide any feedback or maybe a solution?
    Using x64.
    Thank you.

I agree: in this case, yes; rp-pppoe does not accept any other version than one, but why was that done in the first place? Was that intentional?
Or, I'm thinking, an update to rp-pppoe, with the current base version, could be released, in the meanwhile, to accept other versions of ppp, as well.
Oops: I just noticed that thea also posted on this topic before me.

  • Post Action depending on variable

    Hi,
my sequence has several subsequences with pass/fail decisions for different substeps. To save testing time my sequence does not perform the following substeps if one substep returned a FAIL as result and hence I set the Post Action On Fail: Goto cleanup.
However there are situations when I want to run all substeps also if one substep before returned a FAIL. I think a good solution would to set the Post Action differently depending on a Variable (Local, Parameter, FileGlobal, StationGlobal). For example: If the Variable is TRUE I would go to Cleanup on fail, if it is FALSE I would go to the next step on fail. I could put this into all my substeps and to change the behaviour only the variable value must be changed.
Is this possible or is there another solution for my problem?
    Thanks
      TT
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Ok, this is more tricky....
The problem you are facing is that the setting for the post action is defined in the step instance. You can modify that during runtime using *any* expression, but if you fail to follow the correct format there, you will produce a run-time error.
Use the Step.TS.FailActTarget to jump as you like. The Step.TS.FailAct has to be "Goto" in order for this to work.
The next keypoint is to find the correct place for that expression. Never tested that, but it should be possible to induce it into the custom condition itself.....
    hope this helps,

  • Importing Data from MS Access into SQL Serevr 2005 via Linked Server: User-Dependent failure

I am operating an Express version of SQL Server 2005 on a Windows XP machine.
I have successfully setup a linked server to a remote Access (.mdb) database. With my user account (Windows authentication) I can retrieve and store data without any problem.
I have another user (apparently with same settings as my own account) that is always failing to get the data.
The Error message he gets is:
OLE DB provider "Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0" for linked server "TSU_Tmp" returned message "The Microsoft Jet database engine cannot open the file '\\DSITSO-NT0001\Exchange\Database5.mdb'.  It is already opened exclusively by another

PS: it is run using an 'EXEC(String)' format as at compile time of Store Procedure the Linked Server is not existing and otherwise compile would fail.
We tried it with different files, in different locations. It always wors for me, never for him...
The files were not used by anyone else. The folder(s) where they were stored are open to "Everyone".
So I concluded it should be something linked to the User... :) But I really do not know what, as said apparently we have exactely the same setup in our Login profiles.
Any idea or suggestion is welcome.
    Thanks
    Luca

    Hi Luca Lentati,
According to your description and T-SQL statement, we need to verify if the download and install the Microsoft.Jet.OleDB.4.0 as a provider.
If the 64bit SQL Server is running on the server,  The error, the Microsoft.Jet.OleDB.4.0 is not support, I reommend you download and install the Microsoft.ACE.OLEDB.12.0 as a provider.
The error 7303 message indicates that the linked server does not have correct login mapping. You can execute the sp_helplinkedsrvlogin stored procedure to set the login information correctly. Also, verify that you have specified the correct parameters
    for the linked server configuration.
In addition, if the issue still exists, I recommend you copy the access file to local Server, and create linked server between them , check if it can run well. If yes, it means that
the account which SQL server uses to run the service does not have read/write access to that file share.
There is an article about configuring a Linked Microsoft Access Server on SQL 2005 Server , you can review the following article.
    http://www.aspfree.com/c/a/Microsoft-Access/Configuring-a-Linked-Microsoft-Access-Server-on-SQL-2005-Server/

First  run the cs5 cleanup tool and reboot.
Second,  go into c:\program file(x86)\common files\adobe\installers . Delete  everything in it
Then go into you registry  (start, run, then type regedit) and expand to this registry key:  HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Installer\UserData\S-1-5-18\ Components  ...(if this isnt there, try an install again, then go to the folder  that you deleted the files from a moment ago and extract the log from  the zip file and open it and go to the end. where it says error 1402  will be followed by a unknown\components\(a bunch of numebers right  here)\(more numbers)  ...
Copy the numbers  directly after the components\ and go back into registry and click edit  then "find" paste those numbers into the box and hit find..when you get  to the key, scroll ALL the way back up to components again. Right click  components and hit permissions.. Go to advanced and then the ownership  tab up top.. click edit, hightlight administrator(s), check the box to  "replace subcontainers" and click apply. respond yes to everything and  close that and hit apply again if asked. then click the add button above  the advanced button you just clicked. when the new box appears, click  advanced and then click find now. Highlight Administrators and SYSTEM  and hit OK. Then give both of them full rights and hit apply. Then click  advanced again and in the first window check the box that says "replace  all child objects...." and hit apply. accept the prompts and hit okay.
Now  go into c:\windows and on the system32 folder, right click and go to  properties. Go to the security tab. Click advanced and then "owner" and  click edit. highlght administrators and check the box "replace all child  object....." again and hit apply....
Now give  Administrators, SYSTEM, AND TrustedInstaller full rights by clicking  edit above the advanced tab in the first properties box.. Then click  advanced again and in the first window click replace all child  object....." again and hit apply....
Now  do the same for the winsxs folder and (for good measure i did syswow64  but not sure if its necessary)...
Now you should  be able to install both versions..(as i said, I installed cs4 first,  maybe it was not necessary)...
If you dont  like the idea of just blindly giving administrators full rights to all  system folders, you can spend MANY MANY hours running the installs over  and over and getting the faulty registry value that caused it to fail  and create specific permissions for that and then go on to the next  value that fails......what a pain

    Thank you for this.
I have been trying to install CS5 MC now for weeks. I first got it to install everything except After Effects and Premiere Pro. Then trying to follow all the suggestions on this forum I wound up not being able to install any part of it at all. Now..
Well...following your kind suggestions as much to the letter as I could I have now been able to install everything...except Affter Effects and Premiere Pro. Sigh.
At least I can get back to work on everything that doesn't require AE and PPro.  I still need to get them installed and working.

  • UCCE Router Call Key Reset Post Private Link Failure

                     Hi Guys
As above. My customer has UCCE v7.5.8 together with CVP 7.0 designed with a pair of Proggers geographically split with a 2x10Mb LES between the 2 sites supporting both the visible and private traffic (One LES for each).
The LES supporting the Private traffic 'blipped' but recovered within 10 mins. Now each day @ midnight Router Call Key starts at 201, however, whilst looking into a reporting issue I noticed that Router Call Key, seems to have reset to 201, but prepended with digits 34768, making a Router Call Key of 34768201. This appears to coincide with the time of the Private link recovery. Has anyone seen this before? I'm guessing this denotes a state-transfer/Db re-sync has taken place, or am I barking up the wrong tree?
    Cheers
    Freddie

    Thanks Lasse,
When running that tool, all the links are showing zero utilization - not sure if the tool is able to show any more detailed information?
I should state that this Lync implementation is not live, there no Lync clients out on the corporate network, and I'm not expecting any traffic on the WAN site links at this point.
It just seems to be an issue when accessing as a remote user.   At this point I think it must be because I have misconfigured CAC.  And because it is happening for a conference and not peer to peer for the remote user, then it is probably the relationship
between the front end server pool and Edge server / remote user.
I have a local / central site defined in CAC with no bandwidth policy applied.  Initially the subnets assigned to this central site were just the LAN subnets for the central site that I knew would have Lync clients running on them.  Then as part
of troubleshooting decided to add the Edge Internal IP, and then Edge external IPs as subnets associated with this central site.  Still getting the same problem though.
Its around about times like now where I wonder if it is something simple like a service needing restarting so I'll double check things like this.   If you have any other ideas it would be greatly appreciated - a bit stuck.

    James

  • Sendmail dependency for multi-user milestone

I am currently setting up a CommuniGate mailserver on a Solaris 10 box . Starting the new service is hampered by sendmail running on the smtp port.
My question regards disabling sendmail services so that CommuniGate can do its own thing. The sendmail service is shown as a dependency for the multi-user milestone:
    svcs -l multi-user
    fmri         svc:/milestone/multi-user:default
    name         Multi-user milestone
    enabled      true
    state        online
    next_state   none
    restarter    svc:/system/svc/restarter:default
    dependency   require_all/none svc:/milestone/single-user (online) svc:/milestone/name-services (online)
    dependency   require_all/none svc:/system/filesystem/local (online)
    dependency   optional_all/none svc:/platform/i86pc/kdmconfig:default (absent)
    dependency   optional_all/none svc:/network/rpc/bind (online)
    dependency   optional_all/none svc:/system/system-log (online)
    dependency   optional_all/none svc:/system/utmp (online)
    dependency   optional_all/none svc:/system/mdmonitor (offline)
    dependency   optional_all/none svc:/network/inetd (online)
    dependency   optional_all/none svc:/system/cron (online)
    dependency   optional_all/none svc:/system/name-service-cache (online)
    dependency   require_all/none svc:/system/rmtmpfiles (online)
    dependency   optional_all/none svc:/system/system-log (online)
    dependency   optional_all/none svc:/network/nfs/client (offline)
    dependency   optional_all/none svc:/system/filesystem/autofs (online)
dependency   optional_all/none svc:/network/smtp:sendmail (online)If I disable sendmail, will the multi-user milestone croak on startup? I'm reluctant to just try it, since I'm working on a remote machine without console access in case it does croak.
I've read the sections on dependency groupings (i.e. optional_all/none) but I'm still confused regarding the real links between services.
    thanks for any clarification.....docm

If I disable sendmail, will the multi-user milestone
croak on startup? I'm reluctant to just try it, since
I'm working on a remote machine without console
access in case it does croak. No, not at all. There's a difference between administratively disabling a service and having it fail, and for a dependency to be "required" or "optional".
    On this machine....
    # svcs -l multi-user | grep -v online
    fmri svc:/milestone/multi-user:default
    name multi-user milestone
    enabled true
    next_state none
    state_time Wed May 25 13:42:14 2005
    logfile /var/svc/log/milestone-multi-user:default.log
    restarter svc:/system/svc/restarter:default
    dependency optional_all/none svc:/platform/i86pc/kdmconfig:default (absent)
    dependency optional_all/none svc:/network/smtp:sendmail (disabled)
    dependency optional_all/none svc:/system/mdmonitor (disabled)
    dependency optional_all/none svc:/application/print/server (disabled)
    dependency optional_all/none svc:/network/ntp (disabled)
    dependency optional_all/none svc:/system/rcap (disabled)
None of the dependencies are required, so the machine still goes to multi-user...

  • Trying to understand the Release Process with Milestones

    Here's my goal:
I want to control the release of a project so that only certain WBSs can accumulate costs once certain milestones are reached. I want to block people from confirming activities out of order.
I created a project with the following activities:
Kick Off (milestone) -> Design -> Approve (stop milestone)
The design activity is where we will plan work and charge time.
I released the Kick Off activity only, leaving the Design & Approve activities in the CRTD status
It has it's own WBS, so my project looks like this:
    Project (top WBS) PREL
    Kick Off activity REL
    Design WBS CRTDDesign Activity CRTD
    Approve activity CRTD
When I final confirm the Kick Off activity with CN25, the system reports an error:
"CN699 One or more than one activity was not released. See log"
The Kick Off activity gets status "FKTF - Error when processing function". There is no way I can find to view a log to see what happened. After googling around it seems like the release failed because my Design WBS is not released, however releasing this WBS also releases the Design Activity!
    Questions:
What am I missing? How is this milestone release function meant to be used?
If I cannot automatically release an activity in a WBS that is not released, how do you release the WBS only? Why can I release an activity manually in project builder (giving the WBS PREL) , but not automatically with a milestone?
Where is the log mentioned in the CN699 error?
How do you un-release something? In case it was released by mistake, I want to unrelease it so no charges are made.

    Hi,
WBS 'Release' status can control whether you can confirm activity assigned to it. If you release WBS , all assigned activity ( Please make sure you are using Activty assigned network PS02 & you have mentioned WBS element in the network activity details. Do not maintain WBS in network header) will be released automatically.
Anyway you have released kickoff activity, just make sure assinged WBS is also released. You may need to create one more WBS ( kick off WBS) just like design WBS at same level.

1: There is no such thing as 'Stop Milestone'( Or Start Milestone). Milestones are assigned to last activity you want to monitor for completion meaning when network activity in fully Confirmed(CNF) & there is milestone assigned to it, Milestone is considered release. You can have many functions with Milestone reaching released status( trigger billing unblock, MilestoneTrend analaysis)
2: You can manually release activity in WBS . Releasing WBS will release activity automatically so you cannot prevent activity release , if you decide to release WBS. WBS is parent object & releasing it will release all child object.
Milestone release will not release activity, it is otherway around. Reaching CNF status on last activity will release milestone.
3: Go to network display , there must be log , if activity status shows it.
4: There is no undo functions for 'Release' (Like Cancel TECO) of project/WBS/Activity. Since you can start posting cost after relese , it will violate integrity , if such function is provided. There could be BAPI available to unrelease .
    Hope this helps,
    Jatin

  • Milestone Billing based on POC(Percentage of completion) and Sales Order

    Dear Experts,
                      With reference to following link
    SD Cycle in PS
i would like to add one more doubt.
My client want to copy milestone only when milestone POC is completed.
Like After Completion of 30% of work,Billing must be copied from it.
System does not allow you to exit untill u complete 100% billing in sales order.
    Kindly put some valuable inputs.
    Regards

    > Regards
You can create activities for each task and attach milestone on it. when you complete the task confirm the activity so system will automatically confirm milestone as well, which will remove the billing block.

System wont know automatically, your project engineer should confirm the activity based on the completion of tasks.

state maintenanceThis milestone isn't "offline", it's in "maintenance". So it tried to come online (after the dependencies were met), but failed for some reason. You should check the log file for the service.
