Mixed Environment?

I am wandering about having a mixed environment for next september. Right now we have mostly G4 emacs/iMacs and iBooks. The iMacs are to slow to run leopard but the emacs and most of the iBooks meet the requirements for leopard. Our servers will be upgraded to leopard and we currently use OD/AD for management/authentication with network home dirs. Is there are problems with having client machines running 10.4.11 and 10.5.3(4?) and users going in between them?
Thanks
-Will

I've got 60+ machines running both 10.4.11 and 10.5.3, bound to both AD and OD. Even my servers are half 10.4 and 10.5.
The desktops are running 10.4 due to Digidesign (ProTools) and the servers are running 10.4 due to FileMaker Pro.
Now, there a couple of odd things you will see: Once a user logs into a 10.5 machine, he will have a downloads folder created. Also, if iCal is being used, (or really any of the iLife aps), I had some trouble getting everything to cooperate without all the latest updates.

  • Remote desktop connection limit in windows 2003 administration as well as in the mixed environment of windows 2003 and 2008 servers

RDP protocol i.e. Remote desktop connection is configured to perfrom and manage  software administration of ORACLE application and database servers which runs on windows 2003 server.   Two sessions are allowed on each of these servers for database
    administrators. The question is:
    a) if network administrators who perform window server administration (50+) are included in
2 sessions limit or do they manage all these servers through Console Session which is separate from the remote desktop connection limits of 2 sessions.
    b) How is the 2 sessions  limit prescribed by microsoft (more of a licensing limit) handled in the mix environment of windows 2003 and 2008 server where all these servers are managed on the VMWARE?
    avnish sharma

    Hi Avnish,
Thank you for posting in Windows Server Forum.
By default any windows server will provide 2 remote session for administration purpose only. No matter which administrator is accessing that server. If you will connect the console session then 3.One server is accessed by 3 Session (console + Remote +
Remote). When the particular server reached this limit then any working administrator will receive a message to log out as other user trying to access the session or if we had provided the setting then new user is restricted to login.
If you want more than 2 remote desktop session than you need to purchase TS\RDS CAL, install TS\RD Licensing role, activate it first and then configure CAL on it. There are 2 types of CAL available (USER & DEVICE). You can purchase CAL according to your
    company requirements.
    Hope it helps to understand!

  • 802.11n greenfield in a mixed environment

we plan to have mixed 802.11n deployment coexistence with a/b/g clients. But we want to have some classrooms or labs to run greenfield only where people request 100Mbps bandwidth to transfer large images. What is the best practice to design some small greenfield areas in the mixed environment? And what is the best way to prevent 802.11a users to associate to our 1140s?

  • Running Portlets in a Mixed Environment

We are running Oracle9iAS Portal on an HP Unix box. We have noticed that many of the third party portlets like Business Objects, and SiteScape are only supported on NT and Sun Solaris, and some on Linux and Compaq Tru64 Unix. Although they are not explicitly supported on HP-UX, would they still operate on HP-UX?
Alternatively, is it feasible to run these portlets in a mixed environment of NT and HP Unix? If the portlets are only supported on NT, then we would need a seperate instance of Portal on an NT box to support those portlets. Would we have to run two versions and instances of the 9iAS Application Server, and if so, would we have to run seperate instances of the Portal schema also?
    so,
    1) Is it feasible to run two instances of Portal and perhaps have the information on the two different servers (NT and HP-UX) be synchronized?
    2) Or would it be possible to share the HP-UX Portal schema between the 9i Application Servers on both NT and HP-UX?

    Henry,
Thank you for the thought. The windows machines are connected by wire to the LAN. At the moment, we are only supporting wireless for apple products.
I have spent a significant amount of time on this issue since the original post, and have concluded that my original plan is untenable. For this to work the way I had hoped it seems I would have to establish a central DHCP server and not use the "Distribute IP Addresses" capability of the AEBS. The subsequent question is, will wireless apple computers pick up a DHCP IP address in this setup?
    Thanks again.

  • File web links in mixed environment

We're deploying macs on a pretty large scale in a mixed environment, and there are many internal sites that use the file:// header to link to files. Being windows -specific, this only works in Internet Explorer.
Is there an alternative to use with Firefox? I'm sure we could if/then the links for the different operating systems. The file servers are not running web services or ftp, unfortunately, so we would be limited to samba use.
Thank you in advance for any help that can be provided.
Powerbooks   Mac OS X (10.4.2)   also use Minis

Here's an update on a possible solution. Firefox, by default, has local file viewing (file:// links) disabled. This can be enabled, and if the correct Windows directory is mounted, then it can be accessed on OS X by created a link such as
    file:///Volumes/servername/dir/file.extension

  • 7920 and 7921G mixed environment

Hi Team, have you any experiences with both 7920 and 7921G in the same WLAN? My Customer is using WLC440x w AP1242. How to Configuree the SSID Parameters regarding QOS and CAC, have you any hints? Thx, Regards, Michael

The big issue here is with CAC/TSPEC.
The 7921 gives precedence to TSPEC over QBSS for CAC as TSPEC can be utilized for inbound and outbound CAC, where QBSS is just for outbound dialing.
4.1 release for the Cisco WLAN controller has the load based CAC feature. This means it will account for all traffic and energy on the channel, not just the # of TSPEC clients on a given AP.
So if wanting to enable CAC/TSPEC in mixed environment of 7920 and 7921, would want to ensure you use 4.1 release and enable load based CAC.
If 7921 will be in G mode, it will send out the CTS to self for G protection, which the 7920 will adhere to.
The other is capacity. If you have calls at 11mbps or other 802.11b rates, then capacity will get reduced.
Typically can get up to 10 RTP streams per AP @ 11 mbps and up to 20 calls @ 24 mbps or higher.

  • Permissions in a mixed environment

I'm providing support for a mixed operating environment with users using both OS X Lion and Windows Vista/7 in a small network environment (~5 devices).  We recently installed a Mac Mini Server running OS X Lion Server, which has been configured to serve as a file server, along with running Parallels to provide some server support for applications (ie: ACT) where the business does not yet have a Mac-based solution. While I primarily deal with Windows workstations/servers, I've been tasked with helping get the Mac Mini Server configured.
I'm having difficulty properly configuring permissions for a network-wide shared folder - the network users call it "The Box" - where the users save documents intended to be shared with the other network users.  The OS X clients connect to the shared folder via AFP, and are able to browse to the shared folder via Finder.  The Windows clients connect to the shared folder via SMB, mapping a drive using \\ip-address\sharename .  Each user has their own network credentials to connect to the server and access this shared folder, and all belong to the same security group.
The issue I'm having difficulty resolving pertains to file permissions.  When a user saves a document to "The Box", the other network users are unable to open the document.  An administrator is required to go in and adjust the unix permissions to allow the other network users to access a document once it has been placed in "The Box," which is reducing the amount of time the administrator in question can spend on regular business tasks.  I have gone into the Server app and attempted adjusting permissions on the share and its propagation there, but that did not appear to be the fix required (or was configured incorrectly).  Searching the web for solutions return results that applied to older versions of OS X Server, leaving me under-informed on the correct configuration required.
How should this be set up so that documents saved to the "The Box" share on the server have the necessary permissions for all users in the network to have read/write access to any current and future files saved in this location?

Set up a new group called "Workers" or something like that and put in the Users into that group. Now go to Server.app and assign the Group to your share ADDITIONALLY (not by changing the group you see in the Posix permissions) by hit the "+" sign. Give READ & WRITE to the group. The go to Server > Hardware > Storage and propagate the permissons to the included files & folders.
That should clear you problems by setting up and additional read & write permission by ACL, which is not overwritten, when a user saves a document to "The Box".

  • WebLogic in mixed environment (Win/Solaris)

    Hello,
We are using WebLogic 6.1 SP5 on Solaris. Typically, our
configuration looks like this: 1 Admin Server, 3 Managed Servers
functioning as part of a cluster.
We are slowly migrating everything to Windows. My question is till we
are completely on Windows, is it possible for us to run in a mixed
configuration i.e. have the Admin Server running on Solaris and the
Managed Servers on Windows? Or vice-versa i.e. have the Admin Server
running on Windows and the Managed Servers on Solaris?
If anybody has tried this and/or can point me to any information
related to this, that would be great.
Also, what are the things we should be careful about?
Is the WebLogic license for a specific platform i.e. Solaris/Windows
based? Or can we use the same license for both platforms?
    Thanks
    -Puja

    Puja,
    1) You can have weblogic in hetergenous environment. Just make sure that you have
    all configurable paths correctly setup.
    2) Weblogic License is specific to an IP address. Either you use the same IP or
submit a request for License transfer.
    I hope it helps.

  • Windows - Mac mixed environment: Excel file references, Windows Drive Letters

I was suggested to ask my question on this forum.
Our company has used Windows PCs only. For various reasons, we are now switching to a Mixed (Mac and PC) environment.
All of our work files are stored and server from a central Windows Server.
The shared folders are mounted on each Windows computer as Drive Letters (K:, L:, M:, N:, etc.).
In our Excel files, we use references to other Excel files that are stored on the server.
The reference paths include the drive letters. We've been doing this for many years, and have many files like this.
As far as I know, shared network folders cannot be mounted the same way under OS X.
Folders that under Windows show up as drive K, L, M, N, under OS X are mounted as "Common", "Templates", "Projects", etc.
So references that we've been using for years don't work anymore.
How could this be solved in Excel, under OS X?

    Hi,
This is the forum to discuss questions and feedback for Windows-based Microsoft Office client. Since your query is directly related to Office under OS X, I would suggest you to post in the forum of
Office for Mac, where you can get more experienced responses:

  • How do I add a management agent - mixed environment

I'm running a mixed bag of 8.1, 9.2, and now 10.1 databases; mostly on Solaris 8.
I've installed OEM 10.1 on WinNT, and it does a fine job of monitoring itself, but I'd like to add a management agent on one of our Solaris boxes.
Our Solaris boxes have several Oracle Applications instances, and therefore, several ORACLE_HOME's.
How can I install a management agent into it's own $ORACLE_HOME (so it will not interfere with cloning other $ORACLE_HOMEs)?
I think this should be simple enough... Just install it as a fresh install into a new $OH. However, I don't think I can use the agentDownload script to farm a management agent from an NT box to Solaris, and the OTN download page doesn't seem to have an agent download for Solaris.
    Any ideas?

    Hi,
I opted for 341412's solution because it seemed simpler, and also because my NT box lacks oomph, and is physically a great distance from the target servers (This configuration is only for testing/evaluation purposes).
I installed the agent successfully. However, I can't seem to discover any of the services from the UNIX node. During the installation, the Agent Configuration Assistant hung, so I cancelled it.
    The log file states:
Error:*** Alert: One or more configuration assistants have not completed successfully. However these are optional, so they are not required for the correct configuration of your system.
It appears that the agent is running:
    ps -fu oracle
UID PID PPID C STIME TTY TIME CMD
    oracle 22103 1 0 12:07:37 ? 0:02 /d01/oracle/product/10.1.0/OEMagent/perl/bin/perl /d01/oracle/product/10.1.0/OE
I'm going to muck around with it some more, but if anyone can give me some tips, it would be appreciated.
Should I try running the configuration assistant despite the fact that the log file says I don't have to? Any other ideas?
    Thanks,
    Andrew

  • Using new Extreme N in mixed environment, seems slower than plain old G...

I got a new Extreme N couple days ago. Installed it as the main base, with an older Airport Extreme and an Express as WDS stations.
My MacBook Pro does not have N hardware in it (grrrr, don't get me started . But my wife's MacBook does. I got the N because I really want a networked hard drive and figured we'll all have N at some point.
I understand that the network speed gets knocked down to G speed if there are non N clients on it. However, I swear it seems noticeably slower overall than my plain old G network.
Anyone else feeling like a mixed network is slower than plain G?
Also, does anyone have a sense for how security options impact peformance?
    Thanks.
MacBook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

I'm in a similar position, picking up the new AE this weekend, and form what I've read there's a better way, and here's what I'm going to do, maybe you'll want to try it:
-Setup the new AEx as an N-only network, ramped up.
-Connect either the older AEx or EXp via ethernet to it, and hang it off there in bridge mode.
-Try to put some distance between the two, at least 20 feet.
-You can set it up as a g-only network if you like, and it'll handle wireless communications from you, and the the other g base station, also offering it's services on your total network, but without decreasing the n-speed.
Hope it helps. For more info on setting this up, consult the 'Designing Airport Extreme-n Networks" manual, here (PDF).

  • PXE Booting in a mixed environment

    Hello all,
I have a quick question to ask. To give a little background info on our environment, I setup a SLES10 SP2 box running PXE & TFTP. Right now the box serves SLES10 SP2 using PXE via Remote HTTP Install and that works flawlessly. As a little project, I decided to also put the Zenworks 7 Boot CD files in the TFTPboot/Zenworks folder. The problem I am having is when I get to the PXE menu, I type in Zenworks and it starts to load the initrd and the linux files. After that is successful, it starts to load but eventually pops up stating to make sure CD1 is in the drive. Now I know I will most likely have to edit a few files but I was wondering if anyone else had attempted to try PXE booting Zenworks from another server besides the Zenworks server? All help is appreciated.
