Mixed PC/Mac environment with Mac 10.6 server sharing issue

In this mixed environment, I can't figure out how to get new documents created on the Macs (saved onto a shared folder on the server) to be set as read/write for the PC user. I'm not a Mac system admin, just to start with, but I do use Macs all the time and feel like I know what I'm doing. This is just escaping me.
So new documents and folders, when created by a Mac, are created with permissions that give user group "staff" and "everyone" read only access, and give the "nobody" account ready and write access. If I manually go in I can change it so that staff has read/write, and propagate that to contained items, and then everything is editable. But new documents in that folder (any everywhere) are still not. Can anyone help me figure out what setting must be changed so that new documents and folders created by Mac clients are created with staff having read/write permissions?
I'll be back at the client site tomorrow so I'm really hoping (and expectED) to have an answer by then.
Thanks!

Basically you want to have your members (or groups) added to the ACL under the filesystem being exported over AFP / SMB.

  • Help with Moodle on Mac OS X server - PhP issue

I am a server newbie.  I am setting up a server on a mac for the primary purpose of running a website for my students to use.  I have a hosted site now, but the version of php they offer is not high enough to run moodle.  I want to install moodle 2.4 on my mac server (mountain lion) but it needs :PHP 5.3.3, MySQL 5.1.33 or Postgres 8.3.  I read that I should not try to update the native php (5.3.13)  any thoughts or workarounds?  I could install an earlier version of moodle, but it is no longer being supported with updates.

First off, ensure that local DNS services are working.  If DNS is not working, then various services offered by OS X Server can be flaky.  Launch Terminal.app and issue the following diagnostic command:
    sudo changeip -checkhostname
It's common for folks to skip DNS setup or to reference ISP DNS services, which usually gets them in trouble, and have a much larger project fixing DNS-level errors.
OS X 10.8.4 should have php 5.3.15 and PostgreSQL 9.2.1, the versions of both appear to exceed the Moodle minimum requirements of 5.3.3 and 8.3, respectively.  To verify the php version, use the usual "<?php phpinfo() ?>" script.  For PostgreSQL, the brute-force command-line version check is "psql --version" command.
Put another way, I'm not sure why you're considering upgrading components — which can be problematic — if you're already running OS X Server 10.8.4 as implied by the footers of your posting.
Have a backup before starting the installation, as mistakes happen and having a backup of the whole disk means a faster recovery and an easier ability to start anew.

  • Back To My Mac multiple display screen sharing issue

Since upgrading to Yosemite, I've been unable to access one of my screens remotely via Screen Sharing and BTMM. It only shows the screen attached to the HDMI interface, it's as if the other display doesn't exist. There is no option to select the other display in the Screen Sharing View menu. In Mavericks it would by default show both screens and I could select one. I've tried disabling and re-enabling the Sharing function on the host Mac. The screen that it does share works perfectly, so it seems to just be a problem of recognizing the other display.
Host is a 2012 Mac Mini, client machine a MBP, both running 10.10.1.

Spoke with Apple who spoke with Apple and so on. Tech support for Apple Desktop Remote acknowledges (as best they could) that there is a bug/ problem. Yes, reverting to an older (3.5 - 3.4 ARDagent) solves the problem (short term ?). They captured my OS info and will get back to me in 3-5 days - how do you like them apples! So, revert to ARDagent 3.4 and you can remote connect - may try this later... will post if it works. Here's what's been posted on this: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3192451?start=0&tstart=0

  • MAC  OS X Server login issue ...

I have a mac mini core duo being used as a standalone server running OS X 10.5.2 server. Up till a few days ago I was able to login and use the system via the Apple Remote Desktop application.
Now for some strange reason, each time I login in all I see is the OS X server desktop wallpaper. I do not see the dock, nor desktop icons, nothing ... but I am still able to use the Server admin utility to change settings.
I have tried connecting an external monitor, no luck!
Tried restarting the mini, it gets to the login window, but once it logs me in .. nothing else shows up.
Anyone has any idea what the problem is and how I can solve it. thanks

I'm experiencing a similar issue. The only difference is that I can't even log on the machine at the login window when the machine is just started up.
Everything is working fine as before (other than iCal) and I am still able to maintain the machine remotely using Server Admin or Server Preferences. Did using Disk Utility work for you? It didn't work for me.

  • Time capsule as a repeater in a mixed PC/Mac environment

    Hello all,
I have a mixed environment network that has a Sonicwall TZ 200w as their main router. I would like to enhance the wifi signal either with an Access Point or some type of Repeater. Furthermore, I am looking for a NAS device for all the PCs and Macs. I figure since this is a mixed Win/Mac environment, that Time Capsule might be best since their preference is Apple.Has anyone ever 1) configured Time Capsule in a mixed Win/Mac environment as a Repeater? 2) Do Windows PCs get flustered with Wifi/Nas backups? Is there an alternative option?
The main thing here is that the Sonicwall must stay as the primary router for the network and that any device must support PC and Mac.

TC cannot repeat from non-apple router. Although that is not quite true WDS is so bad and so insecure you would never in a million years do it. if you have a security router like Sonicwall.
It would be like building a castle with a moat and the drawbridge can never be pulled up or the gate shut.
If you setup the TC in bridge and as an AP plugged into the sonic wall by ethernet.. that will work fine. You can setup a roaming wireless network.. which works well on Macs but generally PC fail totally. That is only relevant to laptops and portable devices though.
PC will be able to use the TC as a backup target.. it is not ideal and you will generally need to play around a bit but it does work.
You should note.. a TC is not a NAS.. it is primarily designed as a backup target for Mac Laptops with Time Machine. That is why the combo of wireless plus hard disk.
It is a dumb box.. really a hard drive hanging off a wireless router.. (only it is inside it.. well sealed inside).
It is slow.. fast enough for wireless clients.. but it is a single green drive.. no raid to mirror.. no esata or way to extend the drive.. no JBOD .. when it runs out of space.. it is out of space.
But principally there is no internal backup.. as a place to store files.. it stinks.. you will have to setup a manual backup.
If you want a NAS buy a NAS and plug it into the fastest router point you have.
To extend wireless use a proper repeater if you have to.. repeaters are never a great idea.. it is much better to use multiple AP's tied back by ethernet.
Cost wise the TC is very hard to beat if it suits your function.. but it has a short lifespan.. do not trust it after 3 years. It is sealed.. if it dies in warranty it is replaced.. no data will be recovered.. after all .. it is a backup device.. there are no parts available to fix it.. power supply being the chief thing that goes wrong.
Read in google a bit.. dead time capsule
You will see what I mean.

  • I recently upgraded my iMac to 10.9.2 Nothing but problems since. Cannot connect reliably to a mixed pc/mac network at work, hangs at start up, hangs at shut down. Please help!

Can anyone offer suggestions as to why since upgrading to Mavericks 10.9.2 I can no longer access a mixed pc/mac network? Previous to the upgrade, I did not have any problems. Other macs within my office can still access it, so I know it is not a network based issue. It exists in my machine only, and the other matching machine that exists in the office did NOT do the upgrade and has no problems. (Bummer for me)
    I have:
    Reset the PRAM
    Reset the SMC
Turned off the network Wifi and rebooted, then turned it on again, still ridicously slow when I try and connect to shared pc server. I can connect to other macs though.
Seems to alternate between a normal start up time, and a ridicously slow start up time with no apparent connecting reason as to why
I have a shared HP Laser printer on the network that is working with other computers accessing it, perhaps this is the conflict? It is in Wifi mode, but the software is loaded on my computer. However, prior to the upgrade, I had no problems.
My mail crashed shortly after installing 10.9.2, but I did finally get that up and running, but sometimes it loads and tells me that there is "No Mailbox Selected" in the initial opening Mail window. This is new, it never used to do that. I can select "Inbox" and see my mail, but I never used to need this step.
When I try and access the shared network that has always worked previously, it now will not load the shared docs and folders, just sits there, and hangs. Sometimes it will load the folders after about 5 minutes, but will not allow me to open them.
I do not run any virus protection software.
Any ideas? I would be infinitely grateful for suggestions.

Your download or install of the update may have been corrupt. Visit the Mac App Store and re-download the update or visit http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1726 and download the 10.9.2 update combo and re-install.
If that fails to solve the problem please post back and post a EtreCheck Report which you can locate at:

  • Mac OS X Server on Windows Domain with Server 2003 DC

    Hello,
I work for a school based in Leicester and we have a full windows environment (server 2003) running about 300 XP machines and 22 macs connected to Active directory using a piece od software called Admit Mac.
Recently I went over to another school and to see there mac setup and how easy it is to image machines, subsequently we purchased a mac mini and installed MAC OS X Server on it. I want to be about to use this sever with Apple remote for the 20 macs we have by joining it to are domain and pulling the machines through using AD for Imaging etc.
Can this be done easily and what's your experience on the best way to go about doing it?
Any help would be fantastic partially if someone out there has done it!!

    Hi
+. . . pulling the machines through using AD for Imaging etc.+
Not sure what you mean by this? Creating images similar to RIS files (on the mac platform they're called nbis) can only be done using the System Image Utility. You can use the application itself if you want or an admin mac with the Server Admin Tools installed. AFAIK the application can only be run on the mac platform.
I doubt if nbis can be 'served' by your DC either if this is what you meant?
You might get a clearer idea if you read the documentation:

  • My iphone 4s and ipad 2 both with 7.0.4 update will no longer connect to wifi but non-mac lap top has no issues

my iphone 4s and ipad2 both with 7.0.4 update will no longer connect to wifi.
About three days ago the ability to connect came and went and the connection never lasted more than 10-15 minutes; it has not been able to connect since last night. I do not think it's my wifi router as non-mac lap top has no issues. I have seem many similar questions posted.

Reboot your router by removing all power from it for about 15 seconds. Also, if your router still has its default SSID (such as LINKSYS, DLINK, NETGEAR, etc) change the SSID to something unique. Note that all other devices on your network will have to be reconnected if you change the name, but if the name is still the default that is most likely your problem.
If the SSID is not the default then the reboot should fix it.

This stuff never happened to Mini1.

  • Best practice to host websites on xserve with mac os x server leopard.

    Hi Guys,
I'm trying to optimize the xserve to host multiple joomla sites...
Can some one help me with "hidden manuals or using your experience" about best practices out there...!!
It'd be great on your part...
    Cheers

Erm, Joomla site hosting 'just works' with Leopard Server site virtualisation and the built in mysql.
If you want the best practice try Mac OS X Server Essentials Second Edition which has chapters about setting up multiple web sites.

  • Can't see volumes with Mac os x server install

I'm having a problem installing MAC OS X Server on a RAIDed MAC PRO (3 drives @ RAID 5: Here are the steps that I have done so far with no luck: created a RAID level 5 with RAID utility from CLIENT OS install cd that came with mac pro. Created one giant volume with the entire contents of disk space on the RAID with the CLIENT OS install cd/RAID utility also. Rebooted, the MAC PRO, ejected the CLIENT OS cd, inserted MAC OS X server install CD. When I get to the screen where I choose my volume to install the OS on, I can't see any volumes. I was told by Apple and CDW (reseller) to go to disk utility and do an ERASE on the volumes, that should format the drive and should be seen by the OS X Server install. It didn't work. It's interesting that I can install the normal client OS after creating my RAID, Volumes, etc... But the OS X Server install DVD doesn't see the volumes during the install process, OR using disk utility from the OSX server install disk, but disk utility on the MAC OS X client CD sees it fine. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Eric

Does Apple support their RAID card in Mac Pro using Server? or does Server need to be updated? Minimum requirements for Mac Pro RAID card is 10.4.10.
You could try the cheat method: install everything on a single drive and clone it and see if it works.
From a discussion yesterday or Monday, only Apple drivers are supported on the Mac Pro (firmware?) and not 3rd party retail drives (a bummer) so you've got nearly $2000.

  • IOS 7 devices do not sync with CalDAV on Mac OS X Server anymore

Just like some Synology users I am facing troubles syncing my iOS 7 devices with my self-hosted calendars (CalDAV). I am using a Mac mini with 10.8.5 Server, a MacBook Pro with 10.8.5, an iPad 3 with iOS 7.0.2 and an iPhone 5 with iOS 7.0.2.
    What is (not) happening anymore:
Entering events on my MacBook syncs those with the calendar on my Mac mini server - so far so good. But they are not transferred to my iOS devices. In addition none of the events I am entering or modifying on my iOS devices syncs with my server (and / or my MacBook). Entered events just stay on the device I used.
What is even more strange: a co-worker used his iPad 4 and his iPhone 4s with my calendars without any troubles before updating to iOS 7. After that his iPad 4 shows the account information in iOS settings and the connected calendars in the calendar app. The iPhone 4s just shows the correct account information within iOS settings but not the shared calendars in the calendar app. In addition the verification of his account on my server fails. I triple-checked this, I even re-configured his account but nothing changes.
Zhis is pretty annoying as I am utilizing my calendars very intensively... Does anyone have an idea?
    J

Well, thank You very very much, Blue Sphere!
Your answer helped me a lot, at least the synchronisation works again to most degrees (even between 6.x.x and 7.x devices and Lion and Mavericks devices). For some unknown reason it takes quite some time to sync all devices - I think it takes a bit longer than before but I am happy it works again so I won't mourn too much about it.
    What still does not work:
sharing calendars does not work (or e-mail invitation) for users that utilize a GMX mail account, calendars can not be shared with their iOS devices...
    Again, Thank You so much!
    J
