Modify Arrange is broken?

I notice in flash the Modify > Arrange option seems to be buggy and work only sometimes. I have a few shapes on the same layer and wanted to arrange them on top of each other in different order and it doesn't work... The shapes were created with shape tool and pen too as drawing objects.
I would have to go the extreme, either I would have recreate the shape to be recognized by the program or cut and paste into a new layer and transfer back down to the single layered that was needed. illustrator has the exact same option with no problems. Any ideas? Thanks

try grouping each shape (CTRL-G) even if it's only one 'object' - that should enable flash to arrange them properly (i think...)

CS4 Select---- Modify behavior changed/broken?

Hi,
In previous versions, I could Select--->All, then Select--->Modify--->Contract, which is very useful for creating frames, vignettes, etc. In CS4, after Select--->All, all of the Modify options are ghosted out (inactive) except Border, which is not at all the same as Contract.
Can anyone comment on this?

Thanks for the great techniques, guys I do appreciate it. Here are the steps I've been using, which are, I believe, actionable, but since I can do it in 30 or 40 seconds, I haven't bothered. Just lazy, I guess. Bear in mind, I don't generally batch process, and every "frame" is a little different, so I haven't canned this. This is a technique that I just concocted by necessity over the last year or so of processing photos. The bat is just one of a thousand variations/examples. So for that particular frame, if memory serves...

So if I were to create an action, I'd have 7 "input" variables I could play with. But without the action, I can also add or subtract steps to increase/decrease the complexity of the frame. I know you guys might disagree, but for me this is fast, and gives me a lot of control over the process, and an infinite variety of "one of a kind" frames I can season to taste. But the methods you propose are also excellent. Thanks. I still hope that Adobe will find it in their hearts to put this back the way it was...

Keyboard shortcuts modifying link opening broken

Safari is able to open links in new tabs of windows in front of or behind the current one when the user holds a combination of cmnd, alt and shft. (The action is updated dynamically in the status bar.)
However, this stopped working for me at some point during my use of Safari under Panther, and continues to be broken with Safari 2.x under Tiger.
If I login as another 'vanilla' user it works. So, I assume it is something I installed at some point in my account. The most likely culprit was Saft, but disabling that made no difference.
So, is anyone aware what may cause this (very useful) functionality to break?

Arranging object inside of a movie clip

Hi, everybody.
I am new to Flash therefore my apologies for dumb questions up front…
Here we go.
I have four animated buttons with a design element cross_mc inside of another movie clip content_mc. I need all four buttons to be in front of the cross_mc so I get inside of content_mc to arrange the buttons accordingly (Modify > Arrange > Bring toFront). Everything looks hunky dory until I test the movie in which one of the buttons appears to be always behind of the design thingy no matter what I do…(Ahrrr!)
Please feel free to offer an advice, a word of encouragement, or some medical help while I am busy soaping the rope. Thanks.

You might be right on the money there. Let's try again... My .fla file consists of 3 layer: static background, actions and one named navigation with four buttons and some design elements defining different site sections. Traditionally navigation menus do not move across the screen and there is indeed a choice of placing them on separate layers. What I meant was that in this case the buttons participate in transitions from one section to the next, hence IMHO can not be separated i.e. are on the same layer.

Spry Menu Bar transparency problem - one solution

Like many other people I have spent several frustrating days trying to solve the problem of Spry Menu Bar sub-menus appearing to be transparent (text, etc. underneath the sub-menus shows above/through the sub-menu items). This problem manifested itself in IE7, but not in Netscape, Safari or Firefox.
I thought it must be the dreaded IE z-index problem.
I have been through most other people's questions and replies on the Adobe forums, tried all kinds of z-index changes and various other mods to my own CSS and/or the Spry CSS's - all to no avail.
My situation:
I have a Spry Menu Bar above a clicktrail and a text block. Both the clicktrail and the text block showed through the sub-menu items, which drop-down over them.
All three items are located in relative-positioned divs, necessary because the whole page design is contained in a self-centralizing container div and absolute-positioned divs screw up the whole page layout when the screen size or browser window size changes.
(Sorry, I can't upload the files to a website at the moment.)
The solution that works for me in Dreamweaver CS4:
I selected the divs for the clicktrail and the text block, one at a time, and selected Modify > Arrange > Send to Back in Dreamweaver CS4.
I then selected these two items again and selected Modify > Arrange > Bring to Front.
Finally I selected the div containing the Spry Menu Bar and selected Modify > Arrange > Bring to Front. The thought behind this was that this would put the Spry Menu Bar on top of everything else - and it works!
This solution works in all four browsers, but don't ask me how! I can't see any change in any CSS, nor in my template code. All I can see is a strange, flashing vertical line (like an enormous cursor - about 10 cm [3"] high) in the middle of the template page only (and only in Dreamweaver) if I click on the page background. I can neither find an explanation for this nor anything in the coding which might cause it. By the way; the z-index for the menu div =2, the z-index for the clicktrail div is not defined and the z-index for the div for the text block is set to auto. I haven't tried other values and to be honest I'm not sure what they were set to before I applied the above 'solution'.
But hey - who the hell cares - my site works!
I hope this helps someone else out of an absolute hell-hole...if someone out there can explain where to find the code that had been changed or added by doing this I'd like to know. I don't like things I can't explain - even if they do work!

Punch command error message

Using fireworks mx v 6.0
When trying to use the punch command
Select the path object that defines the area to be removed.
Choose Modify > Arrange > Bring to Front.
Hold down Shift and add to the selection the path object from
which the portions are to be removed.
Choose Modify > Combine Paths > Punch.
I get the following error message "Punch, Union, Intersect
and Crop require two or more paths"
I get this message if selecting 2, 3, 4 of 5 objects.
Also have the same problem when trying to do a union command.
This is driving me crazy,
Any ideas what the problem could be and how to fix it.

straightforward way to do this would be to punch the vector
and use it as a
mask or to do a paste inside. Why is the pattern superior? It
seems more
complicated to me . . . or am I missing what is going on

Help cleaning up a script to search in Finder with Spotlight?

I don't know much AppleScript at all, but managed to cobble together a script (invoked with Alfred) that opens a Finder window, sets the size, view options etc. and searches for Photoshop documents with the term passed from Alfred.
As it's cobbled together I'm guessing there are much cleaner, efficient, and more elegant ways of doing this. Any help cleaning it up would be greatly appreciated. Here's the script:

Mainly just grouping the separate cobbles together, although there is a shortcut that gets rid of all that System Events stuff for the find parameter. Note that in Mavericks the icon view won't immediately update - changes will be applied when the window target changes.

DFS replication issue

Hello,
We have 1 server at branch office and 1 server at datacenter and have DFS-R enabled for user related data. By default we have enabled branch office server DFS path for end users.
Replication was broken some time back since the branch server OS was crashed. We fixed the issue by reinstalling the OS, but unfortunately a month later we found branch server is not replicating the data with its partner datacenter server
as the GUID of the branch server was changed post rebuild. I have removed the old GUID and re-add the branch server to replication group again.
But, I don't see replication is taking place properly still. If I create a new test folder its getting replicated to datacenter server, but not the old folders which have data modified between these broken replication period.
What is the best way solving this? since the over all data size is in TBs.

Can't "Bring to Front"

I'm pretty new using Flash, but I've used some other programs
for creating presentations. I'm putting elements on the stage. I'm
using layers. I'm having no trouble placing the elements in the
order I want. But then, when I imported a .jpg picture, it
automatically went to the back and I can't bring it forward. This
picture is the only element in its layer.
Is this normal & should I be trying to accomplish this
another way? How can I "Bring to Front" an imported .jpg that wont
come to the front using "Modify > Arrange > Bring to
Front?

I don't get:
I guess you are talking about impoting it into the autoring
too via the file menu, are you?
If so Is the layer you are importing it too the topmost one?
It should work that way. Or are you talking about importing
at runtime vie actionscript (loadMovie)?

Existing html issue

Hi I have loaded an existing html into edge, I have created
an animation in a seperate project which I need to also add to this project,
I have saved the animation as a symbol, Imported it to the page but it has disappeared behind
an image on the existing html page, the modify,arrange, button wont bring it forward. How can I bring it to the front?
Any help would be muc appreciated as this has been a lot of work and I need to resolve it asap

I made a quick example using one of my illustrations that looks close to what you have done.
On the attached file, my illustration is on the left done in Freehand (is yours?). It has a transparent fill throughout. To the right are 3 steps magnified.
Step #1: With Pen tool make a box that fits inside the outlines of the arm you drew. Do not have a stroke for this box.
Step #2: Fill the box with white.
Step #3: Move the box behind the arm ( go to Modify>Arrange>Send To Back). Now move College to the back of the white box you created sot's behind the white box.
That's it.
Forget about cutting away the Type unless you plan on having a different colored background.

This can be done by sorting on the leftmost column (with the numbers).
Then you can drag them at any position you want.
Shuffling for that playlist has to be off.

In Mavericks, is there a way to sort by and arrange by date modified? I know how to do it in normal finder, however, if I try to upload something or open a document, it will not sort or arrange by date modified. I can sort by, but I cannot arrange by. It always seems to reset itself as well in finder for me. Is there a way to make this the default view?

How to set a preferred view
There are several ways you may open a given item in a new Finder window for the purpose of saving a view, but this method is the simplest. Follow these steps:
Close open Finder windows.
Click the Finder icon in the Dock.
Choose Preferences from the Finder application menu.
Click "Always open folders in a new window" to enable that option.
Open the item for which you wish to set a view. It should appear in its own new window.

Finder in Column View always auto arranged by Date Modified

My preferred default view is always Column View with Arranged By Kind, Sort By Name.
Many times when I navigate around folders, it automatically switch to Arrange By Date Modified. This is very annoying, I have to either go back to previous folder and back again, or right click to switch back to Arrange By Kind.
This has been happening for long time, not just in Maverick but previous versions too.

No solutions for this known bug?
