Momentus XT / Lion = Complete failure

Hello,
I am using a 2009 Macbook Pro 15" with: 4 gb of RAM, 2.53 ghz cpu (core 2 duo), and I just replaced my hard drive which recently failed. I browsed around for an ssd to use to upgrade my system and stumbled upon the fairly cheap segate momentus xt. As I am a student and have little money, it seeed like a great solution! Well it was the worst decision I have ever made... Here is my Problem:
I installed OS X 10.6.1 from my apple restore disc, after nearly 10 failed attempts I got the os to load. I then updated to the most recent version of os x, 10.6.something. Still had issues, installation failed blah blah blah, I eventually got THAT to load properly. OK... Then I went to install OS X Lion, after hours of even more issues, which i eventually solved and dismissed as just "complications" I eventually booted into lion.
Finder will not open successfully, mail, chrome, ichat, facetime, contacts, ical, preview, itunes, photo booth, evernote, nothing will work.
PLEASE! I have to finish summer coursework for school I need help!
The reason I bought a mac was because their support was great and they were, like me, passionate about education, now it seems the only thing holding me back is my crippled compainion.
-Thank you to Anyone who will help!

I must say, it sound like you've had a bad run. As a mac tech for lot of years, i would say it's unusual & as advised it's more likely you have a dodgy drive. I have the same & 'disinvested' in it pre Lion because of various issues, one in particular relating to stalls & beachballs. This is after researching & running all available firmware updates from Seagate. i basicially gave up on mine & restore my system to one running an 320GB 7200 RPM drive. Post Lion i decided to give it another spin, for whatever reason & to my surprise, .. a much better drive, no beachballs & fairly good response, over/above the performance of the std drive. Joy!
I've recently done speadtests as i am upgrading struggling Mac Pro systems & am trialing various SSD options out there. My std 7200 rpm drive returned average 20/24MB/s read/writes, .. where my XT does around 80 both ways. Significant enough & good value. 500GB, .. speed improvement & a fair price!
Of course for pure performance, theres is no option but current type 3 SSD, .. 500MB/s, sweet! The only thing challenging is finding the capacity to cost median, . .pretty hard right now, therefore for my i5 MacBook Pro, .. i will be happy, for now, with the Momentus XT.
Oh, .. RE application crashes & opening nigglies, .. a permission fix resolved for me. Seems some directories reflect incorrect ownership, therefore App crashes, etc. Reasonably well documented by now, .. just Google it.

  • Why is using Photoshop CS6 as the touchup image editor for Acrobat still a complete failure?

Image objects in pdfs are losing their positional and other parameters when saved after editing with Photoshop CS6(ONLY).  The problem was acknowledged on the Photoshop forum three months ago, but they said it was up to the Acrobat folks to fix it.  When using most previous versions of Photoshop (CS2-CS5 all tested) as the touchup image editor, Acrobat was able to place the image right back into it's previous position in the pdf and it could  do this without releasing whatever path was used to crop or mask the image (basically it worked great).  However, using Photoshop CS6 as the touchup image editor is still a complete failure.  Any idea when or if this will be fixed?
    Thanks

    Hi GeorgeKochkin,
As Shanky post, you can review or monitor the single database backups via the above scripts. You also can find the backup history for all the databases on a single instance. The following script shows the database backups status, history of their when they
are done based on schedule, at where are taking and when, backup types , backups physical device and size of the database backups and time to perform backup and all other related backup statistics.

  • Complete Failure K9A2GM

All I can call it is a complete failure, I built this computer using the K9A2GM mobo and it's just not working anymore. I get 3 beeps at bootup and the manual doesn't even tell me what they mean! Any of you have a clue?
I noticed when I ran Windows Experience Index the system suddently become unresponsive and the monitor / keyboard / mouse went to no signal. I've no idea what to do because it could be anything until I hear what those codes mean, let me guess 3 beeps is normal? lmao I read online 3 beeps meant failure of something onboard, anyways can you explain this to me and what's the problem.
The processor runs at 50C so it can't be overheating, hell I am lost. This should've been so simple a child could do it, now I have no PC and wasted money on this junk. Yea I know you're saying it's not MSI it's me, maybe it is :L but really this is silly, you configure the system and turn it on, install some drivers, it's that easy. How am I getting all these problems I'll never know.
    So 3 beeps mean?
Ugh Vista x64 won't start in safe mode or any other way it just reboots the system entirely. Kinda bizarre. help!

Installed the drivers that came with the OS, no luck. Ummmmm it crashes when it says it's running the Aero Interface Test. Does anyone here think that a complete system failure could possibly result from Vista! Impossible, but it seems I must test this  now. I'll install XP and screw vista, what a joke!!!
I mean if it runs the test fine without drivers installed and it acted this way with the onboard video too, it's gotta be some sorta Vista incompatibility right? I'll let you know :L

  • DTM for Mac OS 10.6 is a complete failure

I have been searching for a fix to this problem since April, when I upgraded my Mac to a MacBook Pro and my BB to a Curve 9300. I downloaded DTM to handle transferring data to the 9300, it worked >once< and has categorically refused to link to my 9300 ever since. I get a "failure to recognize DFTP version" failure... whatever that is (I can't even find a decent explanation for that exception). I used a PC with Vista Home to run the Windows version and load the 9300, but I am sick of not being able to sync the basics (calendar, addresses, files etc.) with my own gear. I have combed the knowledge bases and the web trying to find a clue, but to no avail. None of the standard fixes (hard reboot of BB, reinstall DTM, trash preference files) have worked.
This is completely unacceptable. Once I am sure I can find the iPhone apps to do the work that the BB has done now for years for me, I will get an iPhone and be done with all this nonsense. It is a pity, because as a phone I like the 9300 very much. The inability to sync with a Mac is a major liability for me. I know the Apple crowd is still a minority, but surely RIM's programmers can do a better job than this.

    The Wanscam site says:
    Microsoft Win98 SE/ME/2000/XP/Vista/Windows7/Mac OS.
What happens when you try to view the cameras on Safari on the Mac?
Have you tried  the Chrome browser?

  • Crash on Update to Thunderbolt 1.2, need to reinstall Lion and failures!

Yesterday, after the WWDC'12, Apple released many software updates, including Thunderbolt Software Update 1.2.
When I tried to update it, I got a error, a failure that Software Update could not find this update to download it. So I close it and tried again. In this second time, it "worked".
So, after it, my Macbook Pro (2011) restarted and then I could not login on my Administrator account anymore! I put my password and it was stuck loading for a long time, without going forward. (PS: Guest account worked fine).
After several reboots, I tried cmd+R, used the Lion Recovery and reinstalled Lion over the old Lion.
    It didn't work.
So I went to cmd+R again, and tried scan the disk (no errors found) and repair the permissions.
My MBP rebooted again and, when I put my password to my Administrator acc, I got a Kernel Panic! And this also repeated every time I rebooted my Mac.
So, I decided to erase my Macintosh HD and install a clean Lion. The installation went fine (so it seems, because I left it over night), but when I woke up this morning, my Mac was stuck again, in this screen:
Now, what did I do? I don't have any other ideas...
Not sure if relevant, but yesterday I also deleted my non admin account (which it was that I used as primarily), because it was a little slow and I decided to erase it. But I think I couldn't mess up things because, for delete it, I was logged into my admin account and used System Prefs > Users & Groups (or something like that... my SO is not in English)
PS: English is not my native language, so forgive for any mistakes I could have made.

  • Macbook Air with lion complete reset

I just purchase a 2011 Macbook Air from a friend.  I would like to do a complete reset of Lion to start over as-new.  What is the easiest way to accomplish this?

    Stefan,
I already followed those instructions prior to posting my question.  It said it completed the installation (after about 2 hours) but when it completed and restarted all software and settings remained as they were before the installation.
What I am hoping to do is have the computer as-new where the first time you turn on the computer you get the video and it walks you thru the initial setup and registration.
Do you know how I can accomplish this?  Please let me know.
    Thank you for your help,
    Tony

  • Near-complete failure

About a week ago my PB began its narcolepsy - falling into sleep every minute or so . After a day of this, it completely shut down - not starting-up with or without power cord and with or without battery. Note that I had upgraded to Leopard about 3 months prior, but seemingly successfully. When I brought the computer to the nearest Apple authorised repair agent they tried a series of reboot options (holding shift, holding S,R, etc.). They suggested that it may be a software problem and that I should try reinstalling OSX first. So I did - with Leopard. Seemed to work the evening I did the re-install, but the next morning had the same failure - not fully booting except with the install disk.
So next? Yes, I tried with the original Tiger install disks. Again, same problem - ran fine the night of the install, but next morning same failure. And to add to this, the archive function of the re-install failed me - in the previous folder I can see the folders that used to hold all my files, but each has a red circle and is greyed-out, no imaging seemingly possible.
Luckily, I have one month left on AppleCare - seems my only option is to send it off for professional help. But in the meantime, any ideas for recovering the data from the failed archive???
    THANKS

Thought I would add an update after speaking with AppleCare Support.
After taking copious notes of the problem, the techie asked me to clear the charge (battery out, unplug - the only I can now get it to start in any case) and restart holding command, option, R, P. This got me all the way to a blue screen and the starting Mac OS X message before going back into its deep hibernation.
Techie concludes it is a hardware issue - likely the hard drive.

  • Complete failure of PC app

This is the story of why I would not recommend the PC app to others and would instead encourage them to use steam, gamestop, or finally actually just going to the store.  It started when I installed the app and a few games.  I realized I was running out of hard drive space on my small SSD (120 GB) and wanted to install games on my other hard drive (2TB).  I contacted live support and they told me geek squad would be able to help me.  The first time I contacted geek squad was to try and figure out how to install games into a new location which lots of applications are able to do (iTunes, gamestop app, steam, etc.) and they told me that due to faulty/bad coding you aren't able to do that.  I was a little frustrated at first but it wasn't awful, and so I uninstalled the app along with the 2 15+ GB games I had.  After I tried to re install it, the PC installer kept insisting that I needed to repair the PC app program and not install it.  I contacted the geek squad a second time and this time they told me the only way to uninstall it was to do add/remove programs, which I had already done.  I did a little googling while on hold and figured out that the app has lots of hidden folders and miscellaneous folders scattered throughout my SSD. By the time the geek squad member got back on the phone I was told I needed to reinstall it and unistall it to fix the problem.  I finished doing that and it just left me where I started and didn't solve anything.  At this point I didn't want to contact them anymore due to lack of knowledge and tried to fix the problem myself by using add/remove programs and deleting all the hidden/miscellaneous files around my SSD.  I downloaded a fresh copy of the installer from the website and, much to my annoyance, it wanted to repair the application instead of reinstall it .  The worse part about it this time was that it would not let me completely reinstall the program, stating that I was missing some files or needed to locate them.  I thought this was odd because I was repairing the program so it would replace missing files and if all the files were missing it would just reinstall a fresh copy.  So now I am left with $130 of unplayable games purchased through this worthless app and would like either a refund, or hard copies of the games I tried to download to avoid this god-awful program.

This program is indeed one of the most poorly written pieces of software I've used.
I know this topic is old, but hopefully this will help a few people:
The BBY pc app installer contains an MSI (Windows Installer) package that is the cause of the issue the OP describes. The uninstaller leaves the Windows Installer package behind, and subsequent installs attempt to repair the existing package since it was never removed.
BBY PC App can be fully removed (I've done it for several friends), but it is a complex process. The directions below assume you have an understanding of Windows Explorer.
These directions are provided as-is. Use them at your own risk. They worked for me, but there's no guarantee they'll work for you.
Here's how to remove it (I wrote these directions based upon BBY pc app v3.5.1.2 from Jan 23, 2012):
    1. Open Add/Remove Programs (Programs and Features on Vista/7), and remove pc app as you would normally. You may  also want to uninstall any software downloaded through PC app.
    2. Press Win+R to open Run. Type regedit and click OK. (Editing the registry incorrectly can crash your PC and require you to reinstall Windows. Follow these steps carefully).
    3. On the left side, click the + next to the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE registry key to open it. Then repeat to open SOFTWARE, Microsoft, Windows, CurrentVersion, and finally Uninstall.
    4. Click on the first folder listed under Uninstall on the left. Look on the right side for the entry named DisplayName, and check to see if the Data is Best Buy PC App. If it is not, select the next folder under Uninstall. Continue to work down the list until you find a folder that has a DisplayName of Best Buy PC App, or until you reach the end of the list.
If you reach the end of the list without finding an entry for best buy pc app, skip to step 8.
    5. Write down the name of the folder that contains the Displayname of best buy pc app (the folder name will look something like {FBBC4667-2521-4E78-B1BD-8706F774549B}, numbers and letters might be different ). Close the Registry Editor.
    6. Press Win+R, then type the following: msiexec /i<name> SRCDIR=C:\windows\installer (replace <name> with the folder name you wrote down in step 5.) Note that there is NO SPACE between the /i and the <name>
An example that removes 3.5.1.2 is msiexec /i{FBBC4667-2521-4E78-B1BD-8706F774549B} SRCDIR=C:\windows\installer
    7. An install wizard with no graphics should appear. If you receive an error or the installer for a different program opens, double check the name of the folder from step 4. Click Next, then click the blank square next to Remove. Confirm the removal.
    8. Show hidden files if they are not already shown. To do this, open Control Panel, then select Folder Options. Select the View tab, then choose "Show Hidden Files and Folders" in the list. Click OK and close Control Panel.
Windows 7 users may not see Folder Options in control panel. If this is the case, click "Category" in the upper right corner, and select "Small Icons".
    9.
Windows XP users: Press Win+R, then type %ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Application Data Click OK
Windows Vista/7 users: Press Win+R, then type C:\ProgramData Click OK
    9. In the window that opens, look for a best buy pc app folder. If it exists, delete the entire folder.
    10. Then, look for a folder whose name starts with a curly brace (" { " symbol). If one exists, open it. Verify that best buy pc app setup.exe is inside. If it is, delete the entire folder. Close the window.
    11. Navigate to C:\Program Files in Windows explorer. If a best buy pc app folder exists, delete it. (Odds are good that this folder will not be there. The uninstall usually removes it).
    12. Press Win+R again, this time type the following and click OK:
If you have Windows XP: %userprofile%\Application Data
If you have Windows Vista or 7: %userprofile%\AppData
    13. In the window that opens, look for a best buy pc app folder. If it exists, delete the entire folder. Close the window.
    12. Restart your computer.

  • Purchased Mountain Lion Download Failure!

    Dears!
One week ago I purchased a Mountain Lion X from App Store to upgrade my OS X Lion 10.7.4 (11ES3) on my iMac 27-inch, Mid 2011 and since, App Store didn’t succeed to download it!
“An error has occurred” message in RED color is shown in "Purchases" Tab when it seems to be finished and i have to restart the download again!
    Is there any solution?

    Yes - that's correct.
I did attempt Apple’s Internet Recovery system, but that failed dramatically, as I couldn't get an Internet connection or get to the Apple logo when pressing Command and R keys at the startup.
This evening I visited the Apple Store and installed the OS via Apple's Network using a RJ45 cable.
    Thanks all for your responses.

  • Mac Mini and OS X 10.4.10 Update, complete failure

I have tried to install the 10.4.10 update on my Mini Mac intel core duo 2 times.
To put it simple, 10.4.10 does not agree with my mini mac.
It does install and I can log out an log in again, BUT! the next day it does not boot anymore!!!
I installled it the fiirst time when the uodate was released, the reinstalled my old sysytem and the second time this week, both times boot will not happen the day after the installations

There are no guarantees, but following this procedure when installing updates and upgrades on your Mac will go a long way towards avoiding unpleasant after effects and ‘post-update stress disorder’.
It is also worth noting that it is an extreme rarity for updates to cause upsets to your system, but they may well reveal pre-existing ones, particularly those of which you may have been unaware. If you are actually aware of any glitches, make sure they are fixed before proceeding further.
So before you do anything else:
If you can, make a full backup first.
Turn off sleep mode for both screen and hard disk.
    1. Repair Permissions (in Disk Utility)
    2. Verify the state of your hard disk using Disk Utility. If any faults are reported, restart from your install disk (holding down the C key), go to Disk Utility, and repair your startup disk. Restart again to get back to your startup disk.
At least you can now be reasonably certain that your system does not contain any obvious faults that might cause an update/upgrade to fail.
    3. Download the correct version of the COMBO update from the Apple download site. If your car runs on gasoline you would not want to fill the tank with diesel, so don’t try to install the PPC updater on an Intel Mac!
If you prefer to download updates via Software Update in the Apple menu (which would ensure that the correct version for your Mac was being downloaded), it is not recommended to allow SU to install major (or even minor) updates automatically. Set Software Update to just download the updater without immediately installing it. There is always the possibility that the combined download and install (which can be a lengthy process) might be interrupted by a power outage or your cat walking across the keyboard, and an interrupted install will almost certainly cause havoc. Once it is downloaded, you can install at a time that suits you. You should make a backup copy of the updater on a CD in case you ever need a reinstall.
Using the Combo updater ensures that all system files changed since the original 10.4.0 are included, and any that may have been missed out or subsequently damaged will be repaired. The Delta updater, although a temptingly smaller download, only takes you from the previous version to the new one, i.e. for example from 10.4.9 to 10.4.10. Software Update will generally download the Delta updater only. The preferable Combo updater needs to be downloaded from Apple's download site.
    Now proceed as follows:
    4. Close all applications.
    5. Unplug all peripherals except your keyboard and mouse.
    6. Install the update/upgrade. Do not under any circumstances interrupt this procedure. Do not do anything else on your computer while it is installing. Be patient.
    7. When it ask for a restart to complete the installation, click restart. This can take longer than normal, there are probably thousands of files to overwrite and place in the correct location. Do nothing while this is going on.
    8. Once your Mac is awake, repair permissions again, and you should be good to go!
If your Mac seems slightly sluggish or ‘different’, perform a second restart. It can’t hurt and is sometimes efficacious!
    9. Open a few of your most used applications and check that all is OK. In this connection please remember that not all manufacturers of third party applications and plug-ins, add-ons, haxies etc, will have had time to do any necessary rewrites to their software to make them 10.4.10. compliant. Give them a weeks or two while you regularly check their websites for updates. This applies particularly to plug-ins for Safari 3.
N.B. Do not attempt to install two different updates at the same time as each may have different routines and requirements. Follow the above recommendations for each update in turn.
