Monitoring and preventing disk accesses
Is there an easy way to find out which programs are accessing the disk?
Just curious, I already found out by elimination what was making my nice silent laptop an annoying krr-krr-krr thing keeping me from concentrating: the enlightenment clock module. Weird but true.
To prevent disk accesses as much as reasonable, I might mount /home/me on a tmpfs . Any ideas about how to do that in a reasonably safe way (ie saving to disk every hour and at logout)? And what about unionfs? Does anyone here use it for anything? Would it be useful for this?

Im kinda confused about what im doing but i have neighbors next door that are bumming off of my internet and i want to be able to deny the access of their computers. i tried changing the password but it seems that it didnt help, i dont know why or how they got around it but if someone could tell me how i could block their computers from accessing my router it would be greatly appreciated. thanks.
The details of this depends on what kind of router you have, but generally the most secure setup is to only allow specific MAC addresses to use your router. This can be a pain until you have added all of your devices - and if you have occasional users like friends who drop by it's annoying to have to go into the router and add them. Still, it's the only sure-fire way to keep everyone else out. In my router, it's under advanced wireless settings, and the function is called Setup Access List.

I heard somewhere that Microsoft recommendation threshold of disk usage monitoring is ( free disk space >= 15- 20 %) , if I remember correctly, but how about CPU usage and memory usage monitoring ?

HEAVY disk access and I can't figure out what's doing it
Since installing Snow Leopard, I'm running into period of heavy disk usage (not idle). I can't seem to figure out what it is, because as soon as I get Activity Monitor up, it's calmed down. It's similar in usage to Spotlight indexing, but that's not what it is. The only thing I notice is the Quick Look Helper seems to at 16% CPU usage when this happens, quickly dropping below 1%. Anyone have any ideas of what I might look for? Is there a log I could check to see disk access?

Any "Hard Disk Access Indicator Monitor" on OS X?

Just remember that disk access is downstream of primary activity once things are sitting in memory.
if you're thinking you can find out what is busying a hard drive, keep in mind that the driver of a given activity may not be what you think.
Activity Monitor is still your best window for, well...activity. -
Firefox is a very busy piece of software. It's using large amounts of CPU time and disk access. It puts my usage at low priority, so I have to wait for some time to be able to use my pointer or keyboard. I don't know what it uses all that CPU and disk access time for, but it's of no use to me. It often takes off with massive use of resources when I'm not doing anything, and I may not have use of my pointer for several minutes. How can I shut down most of this so I can use the browser to get my work done. I just want to use the web site access part of the software, and drop all the extra. I don't want Firefox to be able to recover after a crash. I just want to browse with a minimum of interference from Firefox. I would think that this is the most commonly asked question.

My MacBook Pro is not recognizing my external hard drive. The hard drive is listed in disk utilities but an icon does not pop up and I cannot access the data. Is there any way to resolve this?
WE know Disk Warrior is more reliable, hence more useful, and should be in any disk mechanics toolchest.
For the record, I don't know anything of the kind. I have yet to see evidence that Disk Warrior is useful at all.
What I do know is that you seem to take every opportunity you get to promote it in these forums. Do you work for Alsoft?
Let me be a little more explicit. My opinion is that Disk Warrior is a waste of money if one has backups. If a journaled HFS directory is so badly corrupted that it can't be repaired by Disk Utility, then the volume should be reformatted and restored from backup, which has the same effect as running DW, but is probably faster and doesn't cost $99. -
IMac Seems slow and lots of disk access.
I bought my first iMac a few months ago. However recently the iMac seems to have got really slow. I use it for Lightroom and Photoshop.
Without either of these 2 programs open for example I can just try opening entourage or any other program even Safari sometimes and the disk will just go mad and churn away and it can take ages for the program to open.
How do I find out whats causing the system to go slow? or is this just something I have to live with?I think the problem could be excessive memory usage.

New iPod catagory and Disk access problem
OK, what is the new "Other" catagory along with the Audio Video and Games that are at the bottom of the iPod screen. It has about 80 MB of stuff on my iPod, but I have no idea what.
Also, iTunes says that Disk Access is off (Unchecked) but I can see and access the iPod as a drive. I've tried to turn it off by using the buttons but I can't even get it to reset. I have updated the iPod to 1.2. Every time I use it as a drive when I get it back home and try to update I get the "Delayed write failed" error and have to reformat the iPod so I can update it. I've given up on using it as a portable drive and just want to turn disk access off so I can charge from any computer.But I have no podcasts though. All I have is Music and Videos, no pictures, podcasts, TV Shows, Games or Movies. Although, I just checked and I do have the few games that came with the iPod.

EA4500 and Non-Anonymous Disk Access
Purchased an EA4500 this weekend and overall it's working well. Running into what seems like a bug however with the NAS settings in firmware 2.0.37. If I enable "anonymous disk access" I can use the attached USB hard drive no problem, as soon as I turn off that setting and try to setup a user it's a no-go. Windows 7 reports that the device can not be found, and in fact the icon for it will immediately disappear from the list of network devices within a few seconds of changing the radio button and clicking "save".
It's behaving as if it's in a different workgroup than the PC's. I just have the workgroup set to the Windows 7 default of "WORKGROUP" and have the EA4500 set to the same.

That's incorrect. When it is enabled, users on the LAN can access the drive without having to enter in the credentials of one of the accounts set up in the router.
When it's disabled, then users have to enter in the correct credentials of one of the registered accounts to be able to access the drive.
The read/write access in parentheses which you are referring to is meant to make users aware what privileges an anonymous user will have.

If you didn't enable find my iphone in icloud settings on your phone, then you can't do a lost mode or lock your phone.
I would assume you had a passcode on your phone to lock it. If you didn't then start changing your passwords.
Report the lost to your phone carrier - local authorities. -
Preventing SLEEP when using External Monitor and Keyboard
Prior to Leopard, whenever I had an external monitor and keyboard attached and closed the MacbookPro lid the system would not go into SLEEP mode. Now it does.
What's to be done to prevent this from happening?PS.... when this last occurred, the backup drive for Time Machine disconneted when SLEEP was invoke by closing the lid and did not reconnect when the system restarted.
I also received a 'warning' that a device was not disconnected properly. -
New to Time Machine. The HD on my Mac Air is full so I got an external HD and using TM to back up everything.
Can I erase all files (pictures, docs, etc) from my Mac and still have access to those files through Time Machine?That is a bad idea. Time Machine is strictly a backup utility. What you describe will require archiving files, which Time Machine is not designed to accomplish.
Once you erase files from your MacBook Air, they will eventually be erased from your Time Machine backup. This is by design, as Time Machine will eventually fill your backup volume and will delete old files as required. Depending on when they were first backed up and how long they existed on your MBA before you erase them, they could disappear in as little as one hour.
Use Carbon Copy Cloner or equivalent "clone" utility and configure it to archive files that do not exist on the source, or simply copy them over manually using the Finder. You can then delete them from your MBA. Bear in mind that once you do that, you no longer have a backup copy. The only copies will exist on the external HD. -
