Monitoring problem-Please help

Question

Hey everyone, I'm trying to figure out how to monitor audio in Audition CS6.  I'm using a Mac and just upgraded from Soundtrack Pro.  I easlly monitored my audio though my headphones while using Soundtrack.  My setup consists of my mic going to my usb interface which is a Saffire 6 usb which then runs to my Mac via USB.
I'm confused on what I've researched so far....can I monitor audio in Waveform?  or in Multitrack? or both?
My settings in Audition consist of:
Audio Hardware:
Device Class: CoreAudio
Default Input: Saffire 6
Default Output: Built in Output (I also have the option of choosing Saffire 6 here, but doesn't make adifference in what I've tried)
Master Clock: Saffire (can also choose Built in Output here)
Clock Source: Internal
i/O Buffer Size: 256
Sample Rate: 44100
In Audio Channel Mapping:
Device Saffire 6USB
File Channels show L and R with L as Mono.  Both are Saffire 6USB 1
Output
Device:Built in Output
File Channels show 1 [L] and 2[R]. 
L has device channel of Built in Output 1 and R has Built in Output 2
Are these the right settings?  I've noticed on Multitrack mode that there is an I for "monitoring input" and I've played with that with no new outcome.
Any help would be most appreciated!  Thanks and if you need more info please ask...I tried to put down everything I could think of.

You probably should use the headphone monitor on your Saffire 6 which is set up for this sort of thing--it has a function to mix between playback from  the computer and the input (in your case, your mic).
Audition doesn't provide an output when you're in Waveform view--this is pretty normal, hence the facility on your Saffire 6.
Multitrack is set up differently and there IS a feature to select and mix tracks to send to the output when recording in Multitrack--however, even here the norm would be to do the mix between pre-recorded tracks and your new source(s) in the audio interface.
I'm not a Mac user but, assuming there is some similarlty between PC and Mac, it can be a pain to use two different audio devices--there IS a way to do it in a Mac (I think it's called setting up a composite device in core audio) but it's probably far tidier and easier to set up using  the Saffire for everything.
Finally (and perhaps a Mac user can confirm or deny what I'm about to say) I suspect you might be better off downloading and installing the dedicated device drivers from the Focusrite web site rather than using Core Audio.
