Mono playback on external speaker?

Hello,
I'd like to set up FC to playback in mono to two external monitors. I can do this with a fairly expensive cable set-up. If I could set up FC to playback in mono I could use a considerably less expensive system of cables.
I've been looking at Audio-Video Settings/Playback Output/Audio and all I see is see an option of "default" or "Built in Output".
So,is there some some way to set up FC to output audio in mono?
Thanks.
John

If I want to use choice of cables to make sure I get a mono result from my two external speakers I have to use a mini jack to 1/4 adaptor, then 1/4 inch to 1/4 cable cables to the monitors. This way I'm sending the full stereo signal to both external speakers, thus creating mono. That cable st-up will cost me $62.00.
I could instead for $16.00 by a cable that has a mini-jack at one end, XLRs at the other that divides, sending only the left channel to the left monitor, the right to the right, hence a stereo output from my monitors.
(When a project is to be broadcast in mono I don't want any allure of stereo to affect my audio choices. In the past when working in other suites we've always been able to have output in mono for this reason.
It would be nice to save $46.00, which I could do it FC could be set to output a mono signal.

  • Will the external speaker easily blow out?

Maybe this is a silly question, but...
I was playing around and listening to the iPhone on its external speaker today, and noticed how poor the audio quality is -- clipping, static, etc.. No surprise, it's a single small speaker.
That said, I do like to use it now and then -- surfing YouTube at home, or playing a song/video for a friend. It can get the job done.
This morning, I was playing with the loudness and some of my music sounded like speaker torture, even with EQ applied.
Would this speaker easily blow out from use this way? Or from audio tracks set to ringtones and turned up loud? (Loud ringtones are often a must when I'm out and about.)

Thanks. Re the "more than the iPhone can handle" above -- that is what I was afraid of, playing it louder than the phone can handle!
Re DaVBMan: That makes sense, although I think they should have just designed it not to play audio if the speakers aren't designed to cope with it. My e61 with a mono speaker handles quite loud music volume without clipping and distortion...
If anyone else is curious, I want to point out that it also varies my phone. This is my second iPhone (I had issues that warranted an exchange) and the first one had much better external speakers, I played a bit of music from the iTunes Store to demo for a friend and it all sounded fine. Tinny, but fine. It's my current phone that gets clipping and distortion, even at low volumes.
Still, my first phone was starting to lose signal when sleeping... and I'd rather have the clipping speaker than a phone that loses signal.

  • External speaker for 3GS

    3gs
Does anyone know if there is a small mono speaker that plugs directly into the 3.5 plug?  Don't need much (voice only) but just something more than the built-in external.. Something the size of the Square card reader would be great.
    thanks,
    L.

I know that the Linksys WVC210's audio capabilities include two-way audio, an embedded microphone, external speaker and microphone ports, and voice compression, however, I still think that external speakers are still available in the stores, you should try Walmart, Circuit City, Office Depot, Staples and many more...

  • Is there a way to connect an external speaker (for another room) through the headphone port

Is there a way to connect an external speaker (for another room) through the headphone port  & still hear sound through the internal speakers?  System Preferences/Sound/Output or Sound Effects allows you to use one or the other  --  headphones or internal speakers.  I would like to have the option of hearing music through the internal speakers in one room, & through an external speaker in another room at the same time.  I also do not want to frequently disconnect/reconnect the external speaker from/to the headphone port as I know over time the connection could become loose.  (10.7.4  Lion)

dont think so but I could be wrong
as it were I didn't like the build in audio so I connected some external logictech 2.1 speakers  but there
are times when I use headset so I bought this one
or any minijack splitter will work too so I have 2 things connected to the headset port works just fine

My ipod touch was given to me from apple refurbished and still with ios 5.0.2 after owering it on for the first time and updating to 6.0.1 it was functioning normally and i was using it just fine. i had just begun to use itunes and i bought some music and after playing about 3 or 4 songs aloud from the external speaker it stopped working. just like that. i looked over the internet about other incidents like that but then after thaty i returned back to my ipod and began playing Tron and the sound worked fine! i exited the app and it played my music just fine too. then the next day it went out again and no sound was being played. i left it alone and after about 2 or 3 hours i came  back to it and it played sound again. the next day it went out in the middle of watching a video i had just taken. it hasnt come back on since. any help/suggestions?? anything plz..

    - Try cleaning out/blowing out the headphone jack. Try inserting/removing the plug a dozen times or so.
Try the following to rule out a software problem
    - Reset the iPod. Nothing will be lost
Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup
    - Restore to factory settings/new iPod.
    - Make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store. Seems you have a bad headphone jack.
Apple Retail Store - Genius Bar
Apple will exchange your iPod for a refurbished one for this price. They do not fix yours.
    Apple - iPod Repair price
A third-party place like the following will replace the jack for less. Google for more.
iPhone Repair, Service & Parts: iPod Touch, iPad, MacBook Pro Screens
    Replace the jack yourself

  • I have a macbook pro4.1 and the sound chip in it failed. My speakers and microphone no longer work. Does anyone know of an external speaker and microphone set that plugs into the USB port so I can continue to use both of these functions?

I have a macbook pro4.1 and the sound chip in it failed. My speakers and microphone no longer work. Does anyone know of an external speaker and microphone set that plugs into the USB port so I can continue to use both of these functions and not have to pay to have the entire main board replaced. Preferably something under $100.

I don't think you're likely to find a set of external speakers that come with a microphone and plug directly into a USB port. There are USB audio cards that look like tiny flash drives but have microphone and headphone ports in them, to which you can connect a typical two-plug Windows PC headset with a microphone, or else you can connect external speakers and a stand-alone microphone. Those adapters typically cost under $10. I don't know anything about the quality of sound that can be expected from them.
I have a Griffin iMic, which is much the same idea but larger, a bit more expensive (retail~$40), and perhaps delivers somewhat better sound quality (I hope so, but I don't know because I've never had occasion to try one of the little ones).

  • How do i turn off the external speaker on my brand new iPod touch

how do i turn off the external speaker on my brand new iPod touch - it is very annoying

Just turn the volume fully down using the lower button on the upper left side of the iPod.
You can also go to Settings>Sounds to turn off alert and ringer sounds.

  • My headphone port no longer connects to external speaker

The external speaker works with my phone so I know the speaker works. The speaker doesn't work with the hdmi cable and was working right before I connected the cable. Now it doesn't work with iTunes or anything coming from the computer. Just my phone.

    Hi inthetrees,
Happy New Year!  If you are not hearing sound from your headphone jack on your computer, I have a few things you can try.  First, disconnect the cable from the headphone jack and restart your computer.  This might reset everything.
If that doesn't resolve the issue, take a look at the article below and confirm the sound output settings for your external speaker.  The article is for our most recent operating system, but the instructions for accessing the sound settings is the same.
OS X Yosemite: Adjust your computer’s sound output settings
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH18960
You can play sound through your computer’s internal speakers, your display’s speakers (if it has speakers), or through speakers, headphones, or other equipment plugged into your Mac or available wirelessly through AirPlay.
Before you start, open the Output pane of Sound preferences (choose Apple menu > System Preferences, click Sound, then click Output).
    Choose a sound output device
From the list of sound output devices, select the one you want to use. All sound output devices available to your Mac are listed, including the computer’s internal speakers, devices plugged into your computer’s sound port (), USB speakers, and AirPlay devices.
For any device plugged into the computer’s sound port, choose Headphones.
    Adjust sound output settings
You can adjust balance and volume for sound output with the controls in the preference pane. If you select the “Show volume in menu bar checkbox,” a volume control appears in the menu bar so that you can turn the volume up or down from anywhere. To set a separate volume for alert sounds, click the Sound Effects tab.
Depending on your Mac and the devices you use, you may be able to set other volume options using the Audio MIDI Setup app.
If you use apps that have volume controls (for example, iTunes or iMovie), their settings can only be equal to or less than the computer’s output volume. They do not override the settings you choose in Sound preferences.
Adjust your computer’s sound input settings
If you can’t hear sound from your speakers
If a selected audio device reverts to another audio device
I hope this information helps ....

  • How do I hook up external speaker to macbook pro

How do I hook up external speaker to macbook pro?

The external speaker needs to be active - have it's own power source and amplifier - then you can just hook it up with an appropriate cable from the headphone output socket of the Mac.  If you want to go wireless, you would need to get an Airport Express - probably overkill - or get a bluetooth dongle that could be hooked to the speakers input.
If the external speaker is passive, you would need to attach it to a HiFi and hook the Mac up to the input of the HiFi.

  • External speaker won't work

I have a BlackBerry Curve 8310 and the external speaker won't work. I don't get any notification of calls, texts, etc. I had a new external speaker put in but that didn't fix the problem. Anybody have any ideas of what else could be wrong? My phone is no longer under warranty, so AT&T will not replace my phone.

The same thing happened to me. Go to Applications and then the Utilities Folder and then open the Audio Midi Setup app. Make sure the default output and system output are set to the built in output. The same symptoms happened to me when I ad reset those options to an aggregate device I created for some simple music production. Setting the above setting back to the defaults made everything better.

You can install Temperature Monitor and have a look if the CPU oder GPU oder something else went to hot. The processor has a built in safety mechanism to shut down the computer before taking damage.

  • IMac 3.4 GHz Intel Core i7, running Lion 10.7.3, won't recognize external speaker jack, any suggestions?

iMac 3.4 GHz Intel Core i7, running Lion 10.7.3, won't recognize external speaker jack, any suggestions?  Got a brand new iMac and purchased external speakers for same.  Hooked them into external speaker jack and the computer does not recognize the external speaker jack.  I then plugged them into the external head phone jack and the computer recognized the head phone jack.  How can I get the computer to recognize the speaker jack?

Thanks "a brody," my mistake, I was mistaking the "audio in" jack for a speaker output jack.  I have some Klipsch ProMedia 2.1 speakers with a built in amplifier that I am using and they sound beautiful.  I do have them plugged into the correct jack, but was thinking there was a speaker out put and headphone out put.
Thanks again for correcting me, I feel much better now that I know my brand new iMac isn't defective, lol.

  • External speaker stopped working

My external speaker on my i-phone 4s stopped working suddenly.  I was told to hold both the round button & the start up button together to reset.  This seemed to work for a half a second, then it cut right back out again.

which speaker? the phone may be stuck in 'headphone' mode, try plugging and unplugging the headphones a couple of time. just in case-there is only 1 speaker on the bottom of the phone, the other is a microphone.

  • External Speaker stopped working - get sound through headset

I have a Zire 72.  The external speaker stopped working.  If I listen to music or voice memos through a headset, I can hear the message so the programs are working.  I have tried a soft reset but no results.  Has anyone had this expierience?  Sounds and alerts all set to high in preferences.
    Thanks.

The speaker cutoff switch may be stuck in the headset jack.
    Try this procedure.
Turn the Z72 off. Get a non-conductive electrical contact cleaner (Home Depot has this in the electrical dept.)
Spray a few drops on the headset plug.
Insert and remove the plug in the headphone jack 5-10 times.
Wait several minutes for the cleaner to dry.
Power on the Z72 and see if the speaker works. If not, try the procedure again.
