  • More Aperture/iPad syncing issues

Each time I create a new project or album in Aperture, I have trouble getting the images to the iPad when I sync. I sometimes need to sync several times until the images are recognized and imported to iPad. I do have the albums designated manually, rather than all, which means I have to sync and then sync again after I check the checkbox for the new album. I understand that, but sometimes I have to go back into Aperture to make sure the previews are updated. If I choose to update the previews for a project, Aperture will usually tell me that they're already up to date, but often they will not show up on the iPad, even after I check the appropriate box for the album in iTunes. Sometimes I get good results if I delete the previews and regenerate them in Aperture.
The second problem is the sort order. Even if I have "sort by filename" selected in Aperture, they do not show up in this order on the iPad--despite what the support article says about this. They appear to only show up in Date order. I've tried repeatedly resetting the sort order, but it does not change on the iPad. Sometimes I have to delete the album from the iPad, (uncheck the album in iTunes and sync again), then recheck it and sync yet another time. This does not always work, however.
It is very frustrating. The interface between Aperture and the iPad is very wonky. I often have to sync repeatedly, just to get the photos on the iPad and even then they're usually in the wrong order.
Aperture appears to have two types of previews: "previews" and "sharing previews," but "sharing previews" don't seem to appear in the documentation. I've noticed that, even when Aperture says the previews are up to date, when I exit the program, it will sometimes (but, maddeningly, not always), give the message, "updating sharing previews" before quitting. I cannot figure out how to force this, however. Sometimes opening and closing Aperture several times will cause it to do this, but I can't be sure.
iTunes seems to have its own process in which it "optimizes" images for importing to the iPad. Like Aperture's mysterious "sharing previews," "optimizing" does not show up in the iTunes documentation or help files.
This process either needs to be improved, or at least documented so users can understand how to avoid these problems.

    1. Some people have reported slow syncing with anything but the iPad's own USB cable (e.g. using a US cable from an iPhone/iPod). Try different cables
    2. More work - disable iTunes syncing completely, then re-enable a bit at a time, e.g. one movie at a time, one playlist at a time, one photo album at a time. There are periodic reports of syncing issues caused by a bit of media that's been corrupted, and this (tedious) approach allows you to identify where the problem might be.
    3. If that fails, do a clean restore back to factory settings, then progressively re-enable syncing as above.
    Hope this helps

  • More Aperture 3 bugs....Grrrr

The export to email options are totally messed up. You can select the size of the photo but aperture happily ignored that and uses it's previousm setting. You can see this by quiting aperture, going into preferences again and there is the old value. So for example, if I select medium JPEG it will still pass along a great big full size one across to mail, if that was the previous setting.
Now you can get it to remember the option but only if you edit the new size you have selected and pretend to change it and then save it. All fine and good you would think - a workaround. Well no, this leads to an even worse bug...
Try and add a new option. I tried JPEG and made it full size (by duplicating the existing one) and then moved the slider along to full quality. Well that results is a 12MB JPEG file - for a 12MP camera? ***?
I've never seen such a buggy application from Apple before. There is *no way* this application was properly tested. I'm getting a little tired of beta (or is that alpha?) testing this.

I can't agree with you more. I keep thinking it's me, but this is a horrible release:
    1) Memory leaks like crazy.
    2) Gratuitous pinwheel of death for no good reason.
    3) Mouse scrollwheel support broken.
    4) Your preset bug.

  • Will Installing more RAM improve performance, IF laptop has "available memory" not being used?

My laptop has 2x 1GB of RAM.
Right now, and usually, The Physical Memory shown in Task Manager, shows that there is "available memory" (currently it's 500megs worth). (And "system cache" says 300megs.)
There is also, right now, 2.5GB of page filing being used.
If I were to replace the 2GB of RAM with 4GB (of the same Mhz), would there be a noticable increase in performance?
    (windows XP 32bit OS)

A matched set of DDR2 ram will perform a lot faster one memory not matched. Its required for the double data rate to work. Hence 2+2 is the max you'd need/want in a 32bit machine. Windows 7 was built for large memory footprints. XP was built to run just barely in 64MB but really needed a min of 128MB to support a network connection and printing. It was never enable to truely go a whole lot further than a few machines built capable of 1GB. There was even a bug which was patch causing problems if a !GB or more was available. Just because it can see it does not mean it actually uses it !! The kernal by default is swapped in/out of ram even in larger memory systems. Why, it was is not aware of the extra memory and does not change its behavour from a 512MB machine.
As for the 1333Mhz ram the timing may be faster than the other memory used. Hence it flow the data faster on the bus. Fewer delays in various cycles including the RAS/CAS etc but thats all under the hood so to speak.

  • Vault does not work any more Aperture 2.1.1

    Hi,
I just experienced that the vault function does not work anymore for me. When I click on the icon to show the vaults I created, nothing happens and Aperture seems to hang for some time. Sometimes it finally comes back and I can quite Aperture normally. Sometime I just need to force exit.
I switched to a different library, where no vaults have been created and when I tried to create one by opeing the vault area first, I got the same effect. When I select directly "create vault", it creates the file, but it does not put any content in.
    I'm using Aperture 2.1.1 and MacOS 10.5.4.
    Any hints ?

I had a similar problem. A portable Maxtor USB drive worked fine as a vault till this am, then message that there is not enough space. Get Info tells me about 54 GB available, and my entire Aperture Library is only 54 GB. Up till today it did incremental backups just fine.
I added a firewire drive and it seemed to work as a second vault, except while Get Info for the drive says it has a 50 GB Aperture library now, the Vault window in Aperture says this vault is backed up but it only used up 3 GB of the drive. The second widow for the original drive shows the expected amount used, ie about 50 GB.
So if I run Get Info on the firewire drive, it tells me I have a 50 GB Aperture library, but the small vault window in Aperture says only 3 GB.
I was going to reformat the original USB drive and re-try it, but this last information is coflicting, Any ideas on how to proceed?

  • More suggested improvements for iWeb

I think iWeb is absolutely brill. I’ve had it about three weeks now, and for a first software version the outlook is very promising. Looking at people's sites it certainly is flexible enough for both text heavy sites and media sites, and some of the designs are amazing. I love the drag and drop simplicity and the speed with which you can build a site from nothing at all. Gone are the days of ******* about with tables and percentages and stuff like that. My HTML (and my memory of it) was ancient by the time I could build up enough energy to tackle generating even a simple page. Now I'm tinkering about on a daily basis.
However, there are some things I'd like to see in version 1.1 or 1.2 (I don't want to wait until iWeb 2.0 in iLife 07!). I know a lot of these have already been mentioned in wish lists in this forum (some of which seem quite advanced in nature, dependent on .mac changes or server side technology) but hopefully I’ve some new suggestions coming from the perspective of a beginner or simple personal homepage designer. Here’s my list roughly in order of importance:
    1. Publishing of only changed pages – the single most important in my view
    2. Ability to cut and paste HTML into ‘HTML’ shapes through the inspector, thus solving the blog comments, banners, hit counters, metatags issues all in one shot
    3. Ability to preview a page in browser of your choice immediately there and then to check how it looks without publishing
    4. Ability to configure titles of pages correctly, instead of basic titles like ‘Home’ ‘About Us’ – allow titles to be different from page name
    5. Better use of optimised images and code to reduce loading times
    6. Ability to lock, unlock, group and ungroup page elements a la Appleworks
    7. Proper support for adding hyperlinks to animated gifs instead of having to use a workaround
    8. Ability to select whether links open in a new blank browser page and to go to specific anchors on a page
    9. Ability to add pop-up comments via the inspector to items that you haven’t got round to building yet
    10. Ability to control size of photo thumbnails, and have more than 3 wide, instead of having one really really long page
    11. Proper site manager with truly independent sites and independent publishing
    12. Again, the site manager should allow you to nest pages to aid organisation of your pages instead of having them all in one long list (doesn’t necessarily have to link them either)
    13. Ability to change template midway through design
    14. Ability to alter hyperlink colours, surrounds and add rollovers including template ones and ability to save these changes to custom templates
    15. Addition of other Apple items as buttons, eg ‘Visit Apple Store’ ‘Get Quicktime’ ‘iTunes Music Store’ with the correct links, to further spread the Apple Love
    16. Built in favicon editor in the inspector, a simple one will do
    17. Allow FTP to non .mac site though not essential
That’s my list. And, yes, I have sent iWeb feedback. Does anyone have any other suggestions?
    Michael
    http://www.rowan-cottage.co.uk

I would very much like to see the ability to add FORMS to web pages, and the ability to have the information from the forms either be sent to the site owner, or shown on a continually updated webpage (which would be great for surveys). For that matter, the ability to add types of graphs/charts by simply entering info into the Inspector and assigning it a value would be quite helpful too.
Pull-down menus in navigation bars would be lovely. ANYTHING to help with more complicated site navigation, please. Fixed nav bars (that don't move when scrolling) would help with overly-long pages.
I would also like to see an additional type of PHOTO page -- maybe call it an ALBUMS page -- that works like the main BLOG page, updating automatically. So basically whenever a traditional PHOTO page is made, an image (the first photo from that page) appears on the ALBUMS page -- which becomes a clickable hyperlink to that page. Yes, I know there's a way to build something like this from a blank page by dragging photo albums from iPhoto -- but it would be so much simpler (and faster -- especially with PHOTO page-heavy sites) to have a main ALBUMS page that does all the work for you.
I know there's a million other things I'd love to see, but these were the ones (not already mentioned above) that popped in my head first.

  • Will more memory improve performance in this situation?

I upgraded from a 3 GHZ Windows machine with 1 GB memory to a Mac Pro 8-core, Leopard, with 2 GB RAM. Most everything runs a lot faster but a few things, like converting layers to smart objects still are a bit pokey. I expected I would never see the Mac equivalent of the hourglass, which seems to be a wristwatch, again, but I still do.
I have PS CS3 prefs set to 71% RAM for PS, out of 1963 available.
Most all of my images start at 15 MB in RAW format.
I have kept an eye on the efficiency reading at the bottom of the screen in the status area. It consistently stays at 100%. I presume that means my work isn't getting complex enough to go to virtual disk.
In this situation, is there anything to be gained for PS CS3 performance by adding more RAM to my machine?
I couldn't find the answer to this in other forum messages.

While Photoshop cannot directly address all the RAM itself, it works together with the OS to in effect use far beyond the 2-GB limit imposed by the 32-bit OS and beyond the 3-GB the Photoshop engineers were able to wrangle through a workaround (* SEE FOOTNOTE), bringing into RAM stuff that would otherwise be written to disk.
The advice is totally correct. You are just a tad behind the times. :) It has been discussed earlier, though some of the threads may have been deleted.
    FOOT NOTE:
Elementary computing math. Both Panther and Tiger, under which Photoshop CS3 was developed and released, are 32-bit operating systems.
    The 2
32 limitation still holds for all 32-bit applications (minus overhead/application footprint 2
    31).
Because one bit is reserved, the calculation has to be 2
31, which works out to 2147483648, and that's why up through CS2, the Photoshop limit was around 2 GB as it was for any other applications because of the limitation imposed by the 32-bit OS.
In CS3, the Photoshop engineers devised a workaround to circumvent the limitations of the 32-bit OS to let it access about 3 GB.
So, be thankful for the resourcefulness of the Adobe folks, rather than rant against the forces of nature and mathematics.
Then, in Tiger (and presumably in the currently lame Leopard too), the OS began allowing Photoshop to take advantage beyond the 3 GB, as described in the first paragraph above, even though Photoshop is not
    directly addressing the RAM.

  • Aperture on a 4 years old Mac book.

    Hi,
A would like to open my *.NEF files of my camera (D5100 Canon). For this I have seen that I need the last updates of Apreture but I only have the 10.5.8 update of Mac OS X, and I have seen that I need the Mac OS X Lion update so the Mac OS X Snow Leopard also.
My Mac Book is 4 years old :
Processor:  2,1 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    Memory: 1 Go 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM
I know that the last update of Aperture can run on my computer but I would like to know if with the new exploitation system and the last update of Aperture my computer will run normally or if it will be slower. For the while I don’t have Aperure at all.
Thanking you in advance for your answer.

An excellent RAM vendor is OWC:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/memory/MacBook/Pro/Core2/
They will also answer questions, provide tools, etc. regarding the feasibility of your RAM upgrade. Great folks that I have bought from for decades.
Upgrading the RAM to maximum is essential. Once RAM is upgraded to 3 GB I believe your Mac will run 10.7.4, and OS 10.7.4 will convert D5100 NEF files with or without Aperture.
Note that in general newer versions of apps and OSs take advantage of more RAM. This is a good thing because RAM is cheap and designing around more RAM improves performance. However it is not so good for old laptops trying to run state-of-the-art images management applications like Aperture. OS 10.7 uses more RAM than previous OS versions, so when running Aperture with only 3 GB RAM I suggest:
    • Try to run Aperture by itself. For sure quit apps like browsers when running Aperture.
    • Restart before Aperture work sessions to clear possible memory leaks
    • and/or switch from 64-bit operation to 32-bit operation (which will make some additional RAM space available). See Switching Kernels:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3773?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US
I believe that with 3 GB RAM it will all work, but my own old laptop is on 10.6.8 so I have no personal experience with 10.7 on an old MB. My 2011 MBP runs Aperture 3.2, OS 10.7.4 and 8 GB RAM and it rocks.

  • I think my combination of iMac/Aperture is slow

Too much frecuently my iMac stand "freezed" (the coulored wheel messing around) when Aperture is processing a file. I think it´s not a problem itself but a lack of RAM of something like that.
When I added 1 GB Ram Aperture improved slightly
I have an iMac Intel Core 2 Duo wtih a 2.16 GH processor, 2,5GB RAM
and a Radeon HD 2400XT ATI 128MB memory
I wonder if improving my graphic card in my next iMac will help to go faster.

    guillermoalvarez wrote:

Probably. But even better would be to go to a Mac Pro, good video card and 8 GB RAM or more, even a 2006 model.

  • MRP Job taking more time

    Dear Folks,
We run the MRP at MRP area level with total 72 plants..Normally this job takes 3 to 4 hour to complete...but suddenly since last two weeks it is taking more than 9 hours. with this delaying business is getting problem to send the scheudles at proper time and becomes critical issue.
Now anybody have idea to check the root causes of this delay? And how to reduce the time... We have already processing this job with parallel processing.
Reasonable answer will get full points.
    Regards
    TAJUDDIN

    Hi TAJUDDIN
Unfortunately, I do not have any documents related to parallel processing.
But I can explain how to do, So I hope following explanation help you.
    1. At first you need to check whether current parallel MRP works fine or not.
To do this, please check MRP result in the spool.
(In the last page of spool, you can see the result task use of each WP.
To open last page of spool, just go to SM37 and find MRP job and then
press spool button. Now you will see spool overview.  But before open
spool please change page setting that you will see.
<From the menu,  Goto=>Display request=>Setting> Then select last
10 page.  By doing this operation, you can see last 10 page.
2.In the button of the spool page, you will see task use of MRP.
For example. if you use 2 application servers and each application server,
if you assign 3 work process, you will see 6 task.
                             Number of calculated item   Runtime
       AP1 WP1        1000                                  30 min
       AP1 WP2        500                                     5  min
       AP1 WP3        200                                     3  min
       AP2 WP1        200                                     3  min
       AP2 WP2        200                                     3  min
       AP2 WP3        100                                     2  min
In the log, if you observed above situation, this indicate unbalanced system use.
(This situation occur depending on your BOM structure). So there is a possibility
that dispatching system use more equally improve MRP performance.
To do equal dispatch, you need to de-activate MRP package logic to  bottlneck
Lowlevel code.(You can see bottlneck item in the spool.  So if you observe
10 items belongs to lowlevel code 5, it is better to deactivate package logic
for lowlevel code 5. Then for this lowlevel code, no package logic works and this
bring to equal distribution of task use).
The way to de-activate is described in SAP Note 568593  and 52033
(Until 46C, you need to use modification <manual change coding>. From
        Enterprise, you can use BADI).
Regarding on package logic, I recommned you to read SAP Note 52033
(Depending on runtime of former task, MRP combine several item into 1 package.
So if task 1 finish previous MRP around 60 sec, next MRP for this task will contain
more material <package comes to contain more material>. But if bottlneck items
are put in togather in 1 package, this task 1 might take more longer time
cpmpared to others.  And MRP calculation occur low level code by low level
code. So if this task 1 does not finish calculation < other task already finish
MRP calculation>, other task cannot start MRP for next lowlevel. So other task
have to wait until task 1 finish his MRP.  Due to this, you will see big task usage
      and runtime difference in spool).
But this behavior depend on BOM structure. So you also have possibility not to see
this behavior in your spool. In this case, no necessity to consider balancing..
    I hope this help you.
    best regards
    Keiji

  • Photos app vs Aperture, for adepts?

    Hi guys,
Are all Aperture adjustment tools available to a semi-adept like myself who migrates to the Photos app? Can I adjust my images in Photos to the same level of precision and have as many options (and stay within the Apple universe), or do I have to look elsewhere, like Lightroom? I need high-end software.
I'm offered a Beta version, but not sure whether it's for me. BTW, I have just installed Yosemite and am keeping my fingers crossed.
    Thanks,
    Raphael

    Hi Raphael,
With the _coming_ demise of Aperture, users are either:
    - staying with Aperture for a bit: it works well; migrating the database is, _at best_, tricky, incomplete, and inefficient; Aperture will continue to work well under Yosemite for as long as you have a Mac running Yosemite, or
    - using another program/programs for the digital asset management and digital camera image editing that they used to do in Aperture.
Those who are moving are either:
    - putting only or mostly new/recent digital camera files into another program(s), and developing a workflow with the other program(s), or
    - porting all of their Originals, all of their adjusted Versions, and as much of the database as possible into another program.
The other programs that are most often mentioned as being useful to Aperture users are:
    - Adobe's Lightroom.  Functional overlap with Aperture is nearly 100%.  Widely used.  More support and resources than you can use.  Aperture users general don't like being constrained by a modal interface, and don't like the actual interface.
    - Capture One Pro.  Functions similar to Aperture.  Well-liked by those who use it.  Strong editing tools.  Less strong digital asset management tools.  Very much smaller installed user base.  Imho, a more Aperture-like experience than LR.
    - Apple Photos for OS X.  Properly understood as the successor program to iPhoto (it is _not_ a successor to Aperture).  The design emphasis is on ease of use.  Adequate editing tools.  Strong but non-customizable digital asset management tools.
All three feature non-destructive workflows (your digital camera files are never over-written).  All of them — like Aperture — store _the information needed to create new files_, rather than new files themselves.
    rshammaa wrote:
If I am to switch, I would like to switch to a software that is elegantly thought out, that offers at least as much control as Aperture does, and that is widely supported and understood; and that has a forum like this one with competent people responding.
    An excellent list.  Imho:
    - LR is the least elegant of the three.
    - LR and C1Pro offer as much editing control as Aperture.  Neither offers as much digital asset management options/utility.
    - All are (or will be) well supported.  LR is much more used and discussed, and has many more supporting materials available, than any of the others.
    - This forum provided — not just my opinion, and something I'm proud of — a rare combination of quick response, high-quality content, and little chaff.  There are (afaik) good forums for both LR and for C1Pro.

  • How to export more than 100 points from waveform to excel

    Hi everyone. Novice here.
I'm pretty sure other people had my problem, but I don't know how to word it... and can't find a solution for it... Maybe I just don't understand Labview enough to know what's going on.
Here's what I'm doing: I have a waveform, and I'm trying to save the data to the spreadsheet.
Problem: The cap is at 100 data plots (only what's shown on the graph). In other words, I only get data for what the graph holds at the present moment.
Want: I want more than that - EVERYTHING. If it begins from 0s to 50s, I want all the points (10ms increments, which is done already) on the excel file.
Can you guys help me? How do I get suck that history out of the graph?
I attached my labview file (a really simple one), so you guys know where I am.
    Thanks guys!

If you are not in a hurry, another option is to save the data as a delimited text file. This will allow you to open it in almost any analysis program, since a delimited text file is the universal file type. A delimited text file is one in which data is stored in columns, separated by delimiters, and rows, separated by lines of text. The delimiter is usually a tab character (file extension .txt), but a comma is common in some industries (file extension .csv). Note that using a comma separator can get you into trouble if using European numbering styles, which use the comma instead of the period as the decimal indicator.
LabVIEW has several VIs that make this easy for you.
If you have a single set of homogeneous data and are only writing once (NOT in a loop), then use Write to Spreadsheet File.vi. This VI formats your data into rows and columns, opens the file, writes the data, then closes the file. Since it opens and closes the file, it is not suitable for use in a loop.
If you are writing homogeneous data in a loop, use the Array to Spreadsheet String function at each iteration to format your array of data to rows and columns, then write using either of the file write primitives.
If you have inhomogeneous data, such as a timestamp and a few doubles, format the data on a line by line basis and write to disk. The attached example, SImpleLowLevelWriteSpreadsheetFile.vi shows how to do this.
If you need more speed, you can buffer your data so the blocks of data you send to disk are more optimized. This is a bit more complex, but the attached example, BufferedLowLevelWriteSpreadsheetFile.vi shows how to do it. This will usually give you at least 2X and could be 10X or more speed improvement.
    Have fun!

    Please help.. Thank you..

    Hi,
I just realised I can simplify the query to:
SELECT DISTINCT USERNAME, PASSWORD, ROLE, RIGHTS,
    DECODE(ROLE,
         GEO, 'g='||NVL(GEO,'none'),
         AREA, 'g='||NVL(GEO,'none')||'&a='||NVL(AREA,'none'),
         REGION, 'g='||NVL(GEO,'none')||'&a='||NVL(AREA,'none')||'&r='||NVL(REGION,'none'),
         DISTRICT, 'g='||NVL(GEO,'none')||'&a='||NVL(AREA,'none')||'&r='||NVL(REGION,'none')||'&d='||NVL(DISTRICT,'none'),
         OFFICE, 'g='||NVL(GEO,'none')||'&a='||NVL(AREA,'none')||'&r='||NVL(REGION,'none')||'&d='||NVL(DISTRICT,'none')||'&o='||NVL(OFFICE,'none'),
         NULL) RPATH
    FROM (SELECT U.*, L.*
    FROM (SELECT * FROM T_USERS WHERE USERNAME='xxx' AND PASSWORD='yyy') U, T_LOC_SUB L
    WHERE U.ROLE IN ('WW', L.GEO, L.AREA, L.REGION, L.DISTRICT, L.OFFICE))
    GROUP BY USERNAME, PASSWORD, ROLE, RIGHTS, GEO, AREA, REGION, DISTRICT, OFFICE;
Anyone can offer a better and more efficient improvement?
    Thanx!

  • Aperture Libraries from version 2 to version 3

    Hi all,
Some "general" questions and some more Aperture version-specific questions ensue...
    First, the "version-specific"
I had a 33 gig Aperture 2 library and have recently upgraded it to Aperture 3 by simply opening the Aperture 2 library in Aperture 3 and allowing it to "do its thing." It took around 3 days. No problems, but my library went from 33 gigs to around 45 gigs. It was actually around 65 gigs and then I deleted previews for all 70,000 photos in my library and knocked about 20 gigs off.
I still have a library, however, that is about 12 gigs larger than my Aperture 2 library, with no real change in the number of photos from the Aperture 2 library to the Aperture 3 library. Anything I can do to decrease some of the bloat? (my library is on a Drobo with tons of extra space, so it's more of a "why" question than a space issue at this point).
    Next is more general:
Why are Aperture libraries so large if I'm using a referenced library in the first place? I have a 45 gig Aperture library that is POINTING to the files on my Drobo "outside" the Aperture libary. Not sure why libraries are so large if I'm not using a managed master approach (which I'm not). Just seems odd that it takes a 45 gig library to POINT to the actual masters that are sitting as referenced files in the first place.
    Thank you in advance!

I don't know why the Library grew in size with the update but several other people have reported it as well. Maybe the thumbnails aren't as compressed.
A 70k referenced image Library will take up several GB because Aperture stores thumbnails for every image - not just the Previews that get shared with the rest of the system, but smaller images that are used in the Browser pane and in the Book, Web and Light Table Albums.
These thumbnails have to be stored somewhere so that Aperture isn't processing thousands of files again each time you view an Album, and they also allow you to browse the Library, edit metadata and change the organisation of Versions and Albums even when the master files are offline.

  • Where can I Find More SlideShow Themes?

I have been searching the store and Google looking for more Aperture slideshow themes, can anyone point me in a direction where I can find more?

I now have the same questions for iMovie and iDVD. I am having fun and creating some very cool videos for my clients, but need a larger selection of themes for all the applications.
How about making some available in the new store? Giving a starter set and then offering more in the store would be a good $$ model.
