More Mac OS X Fullscreen Issues

Howdy all,
Having an interesting problem on Mac OSX 10.3.4. Seems that if you try to start full screen exclusive mode from the AWT-Event thread, it hangs forever.
I have a swing app for displaying a slideshow, and want it to display fullscreen. The app functions perfectly on Windows and Linux, but hangs forever on Mac OS.
It was particularly annoying because all the test programs from Sun ran fine, but my app would hang. I spent a some time tracking it down, and it seems that full screen exclusive mode can be started from any thread EXCEPT the AWT-Event thread. This is troubling because I just want to make a swing app use fullscreen mode, and if I can't use the AWT-Event thread I will need to write my own renderer.
Anyone had this issue? Known bug? Any common work-arounds?
Thanks,
-g

I've been having a look around the FullScreen APIs recently and have have equal measure of success and failure on both MacOsX and Windows. (I read somewhere that possibly MacOsX3.5 sorts out some teething troubles so i'll be trying that tonight).
I also saw that on the Mac you need to use a different thread, but in doing so I am suspicious that a whole bunch of race condition issues are being thrown up when you try changing display mode etc . the online book at fivedots about java gaming suggests that you need to call some fullscreen methods in the event dispatch thread, so as you can imagine i'm getting bogged down.
I think there needs to be some good literature on the net from Sun about the intended threading models for fullscreen and windowing mode. The tutorial says one should avoid mixing the two models, but this is not good enough - i want to be able to switch between windowing and active rendering easily, and also to be able to shut down the EDT as well and drop from a gui-based work mode to console with the same app.
I've been going round in circles trying to find and trying to write code that works a) on one platform and b) on both platforms where windowing and fullscreen switching is involved. I have tried setting up non-EDT threads that immediately call back into the EDT to adjust properties of the fullscreen window etc to try to avoid locking up the EDT. I'm perfectly happy with the invokeLater and invokeAndWait calls, but fullscreen implementations on windows and MacOsX are really hard
Can anybody shed some light? What's going on? Whats the intended threading model here?
Thanks in advance

  • ComboBox fullscreen issue

Short version: ComboBox's dropdown works and renders  properly before fullscreen, but not during or after.
I'm not  totally sure how to ask this, so I've actually made a page demonstrating the  error, with a very simple Flex app, and all three directions you  need to experience the problem yourself.
For those of you not daring enough  to follow my link above, I'll do my best to explain here. I've built a  more extensive Flex application (not the one in the link) that has some  graphs and charts and checkboxes and other controls for those charts. At  the bottom of app in a few of the application States, there is a ComboBox.  Because this is at the very bottom, when you click it to access it's dropdown menu, Flex thoughtfully has it come out of the top.  Yay, Flex!
This works  well until Fullscreen mode. Upon entering fullscreen, I scale everything  up with a stage.scaleMode = StageScaleMode.SHOW_ALL. Now when you  click on the ComboBox, the dropdown is astonishingly large, and  actually drops beneath the ComboBox, causing it to mostly disappear  off-screen. The best part is, once you exit fullscreen mode, the  dropdown insists on continuing to drop below the ComboBox, which is  positioned at the bottom of the app, and so continues to be cut off.
Has anyone else run into this beast, stared into it's great maw, and come away victorious?  Am I doing fullscreen mode wrong?  Please help!
You can get the source code via View Source from the Flash player in the link, and thank you so much for your time.

    Thanks for the prompt reply!
Here is a link to my identical, but two week old post on the Flex forums: [Flex] ComboBox fullscreen issue.  I believe the answer to your question is "no".
Additionally, I have filed a bug report under the Flash player category to this effect, as well as doppelganger posts on Stack Overflow and Flexcoders.  This is the first human response I've gotten on this issue to date, but I did earn an S.O. badge for having no responses for such an extended period of time.
I posted here after this prolonged duration of nothing, and because I thought perhaps it wasn't an issue with the language, but rather the way it was rendered in the player.  I have no idea where I should be getting answers for this from, but the problem isn't going away on it's own or through my repeated attempts at a solution.  So if this helps me even get directed to the right place, I will be grateful.
    Thank you!

  • Combining two or more Macs to share resources

    Hi,
I was wondering if there is a way to join two or more Macs together and make them share their resources, like CPU, RAM or GPU (but I focus mainly on CPU). Is it possible?
I have already searched for information on the Internet but what I could find was information from 2+ years ago which featured older version of OS X, so I think I better start a new thread.
    Thanks

Apple had a technology called xGrid, but it was dropped after 10.7. You should search for "clusters" or "clustering"

  • HELP! Mac Mini Server Journaling issue during reinstall

    H E L P !
    Mac Mini Server Journaling issue...
    Hi there,
I have taken on a nearly new Mac Mini Server running Snow Leopard.
It has a RAID set up already.
When I try to reinstall the OS from the original disk the installation willl not let me select the drive as it says it is not journaled.
I have then opened Disk Utility and selected the main HD (there is one HD plus 2 Raid slices listed).
From this point on there are no options available:
The only 2 tabs above the right hand window are 'First Aid' and 'RAID'.
First Aid shows all 4 options greyed out.
Selecting the main HD and then going to File>Enable Journaling will not work as 'Enable Journaling' is greyed out.
Deleting the RAID does not work either, as the HD (mirrored RAID set) and both RAID sclices have the padlock icon next to them.
    Can anyone help?
I really need to reinstall the OS and set the machine up with a TimeMachine Capsule asap!
    Many thanks,
    Haberdashery

    Sorted!
All is good now : )

  • Mac Snow Leopard install issues w/ CS?

I'm upgrading my Mac OS to Snow Leopard (10.6.3), and prior to doing so, I decided to go online and search to see if there were any issues or recos I could fine re: the upgrade. I'm glad I did. I seems there are a few problems with Adobe CS softwares – saving files and software crashes with Snow L.
I am running all CS4 versions, with the exception of InDesign (CS6). Did Mac/Adobe resolve the issues with the 10.6.3 version?

CS4 should work fine without any issue on Snow Leopard , there could be problem that could be system or application specific which we can try and help you with.

  • This has to be a Mac OS X driver issue - My Bluetooth Mouse just this secon

My Bluetooth Mouse just this second stop working.

My Bluetooth Mouse just this second stop working.
And? Are you expecting someone to be able to diagnose and solve the problem for you based on that statement?
Why are you so certain it "has to be a Mac OS X driver issue"? Have you done something to the Bluetooth system software +"just this second"+ which has caused it stop working?
    Some other possibilities are:
    • Batteries could've run out.
    • Bluetooth hardware in the mouse could've failed
    • Bluetooth hardware in the Mac could've failed
    • Bluetooth preferences could be corrupted
    • Mac and Mouse may have lost their "pairing" info
Unfortunately as you've not provided any information about the problem whatsoever, not even told us what brand or model of Bluetooth mouse you're referring to, or mentioned *a single thing* you've tried already to resolve this, its impossible to help any further.

  • More mac PHP issues

I'm trying to install Magickwand, a PHP API for ImageMagick, and the installation instructions work up until:
    4) Go back to the main PHP source directory (from the example above, it
    would be "PHPSRCDIR", and run:
    rm ./configure
    and then
    ./buildconf --force
to remove and rebuild the PHP configure script.
    5) Follow the PHP installation instructions, but add
    --with-magickwand=IMGMGCKDIR
to your ./configure command, replacing "IMGMGCKDIR" with the full path
of the directory where ImageMagick is installed (in most cases "/usr").
...except ./configure isn't generated (or is named differently) for me and i don't know where the php configure script is or what "installation instructions" i need to follow. Any suggestions are much appreciated.
    Dual-2GHz PowerMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

    Hi,
I guess, that Apple provides the PHP without the source files. And this is the reason, why we cannot find a configure-file for the pre-installed PHP.
-- But I think it is strange that they provide the /usr/include/php - directory, but no other php-source is available, but maybe anybody else knows more about the default installation.
So I think your only option is to get a new src-based installation:
    Get a second setup (src-setup) using DarwinPort/fink for Apache/PHP
If you don't need to use the PHP-API (you can also call the ImageMagick programs via exec() from PHP) you can maybe use the binaries from http://www.magickwand.org/script/binary-releases.php
    Maybe this works for you.
Sorry, that my answer doesn't fulfils your whole request

  • The Mac HD has booting issues - how do I make a clone that is free of these?

I spilled water on my MacBook Air (10.6.8) and now it has booting issues.
When I shut it down, the power button doesn't work to boot it. But when I close the lid, it powers up. However even when I shut it down AND close the lid, it keeps booting up and staying on.
So I have to send it for repairs.
I cloned the Mac HD using Carbon Copy Cloner and put the clone using Migration Assistant onto the new machine (MacBook Pro - 10.7.2). Now the MacBook Pro won't boot at all. Before this, it was working fine.
So I want to know how to make a clone of the Mac HD of the MacBook Air that won't have booting issues when I migrate the clone to another machine.
I have to make a clone of the MacBook Air before I send it off for repairs as the last back up is quite old and out of date.
Also the fact that the Mac HD of the MBA has booting issues affects the ability to access the Boot Camp (Windows 7 partition) as now I can't even boot the new machine. (But I am asking about Boot Camp in another section.)
It seems like a catch-22 situation. I can't fix the booting problem until I send it off to the repair center to get the computer fixed. And yet the booting problem is preventing me from making a usable clone of the Mac HD.
I think the booting problem is a software problem because the MacBook Pro was working perfectly before I migrated the Mac HD of the MBA onto it, The MBP is only two days old. I migrated another Mac HD backup  (one I made before the booting issues came up) onto the MBP on the first day I bought it and the MBP worked fine.
Do you think I will just have to clone things separately manually? I mean should I format an external hard drive, plug it in the USB port, and transfer the files I need to save? What files/folders should I save? Can I move folders or do I have to move files? I have many files in Desktop, Downloads, Documents. I also want to save my applications. I want to save the BookMarks of Opera, Firefox.
Will this take a long time? I have used about 200 GB of the MBA's hard drive.
    Any advice? Thanks.
I don't use Time Machine and am not confident about using it. Will it be substantially different to CCC in the way it clones files? Will a Time Machine clone after migration contaminate the second computer with booting issues?
I am not so worried about the booting issues on the second computer. I know it's from the faulty clone and nothing to do with the machine itself. I can take it to Apple Genius Bar and they will probably be able to reinstall a new operating system on the machine and I can start from scratch, I think. I am more worried about how to save and restore my data from the old machine. Thanks for any advice.

Ok, you used Migraine Assistant to try to transfer the account from the clone drive to the MBP and it didn't work, that's ok, it can be fixed by command r booting into Lion Recovery and simply erasing and reinstalling Lion from Apple's servers. (AppleID)
I suggest you transfer the account data manually because the clone is a copy of a failing drive/corruption, use the same name in System Preferences >Accounts, drag and drop files transfer and hold option key, click on Purchases in crapStore to redownload to the new machine, install other programs from fresh sources. Cleaner machine that way. So that shoudl fix the MBP.
in the future, try to avoid Apple's "answers" like Migraine Assistant as much as possible, it's really not reliable in any sense in actuality.
So I want to know how to make a clone of the Mac HD of the MacBook Air that won't have booting issues when I migrate the clone to another machine.
You can't boot a clone of OS X from another type Mac on another type Mac, only the same exact machine model.
In your case the Migraine Assistant didn't work, so you'll have to manually install.
Also the fact that the Mac HD of the MBA has booting issues affects the ability to access the Boot Camp (Windows 7 partition) as now I can't even boot the new machine. (But I am asking about Boot Camp in another section.)
Well it's possible that Windows or something messed up the GUID partition map of the Mac, why it has booting issues. Likely why Migraine Assistant didn't work.
You'll have to set up BootCamp again on the new MBP machine, talk to Microsoft about validation on the new machine and return your Windows files, programs from fresh sources.
Likely you got malware and it was trying to write to the boot sector of the Mac, mistaking the MBR portion of the GPT for a full Windows one. This also happens when Mac users try to install Linux on their Mac's.
Unless you need full hardware performance, you really should look at virtualization software like VMFusion, Parallels Desktop or even VirtuaBox (might be outdated) and run Windows in a window on OS X instead. Much easier to recover from malware that way.
It seems like a catch-22 situation. I can't fix the booting problem until I send it off to the repair center to get the computer fixed. And yet the booting problem is preventing me from making a usable clone of the Mac HD.
Well if you make a clone, it's going to be junk any.
What you need to do is fix the new MBP machine first then use Firewire Target Disk Mode (firewire 800/400 cable and adpater if needed) and grab a copy of your files off the sick Mac or off the sick clone.
The drive is likely fine, it's just not booting and that could mean some sort of malware/drive/data corruption.
You'll have to install third party software on the new fixed MacBook Pro to read the NTFS drive format of the Windows 7 bootcamp parittion when the sick MacAir is in Firewire Target Disk Mode.

  • Mac book pro - general issues i'm having

I swear since i bought my macbook pro 9 months ago there has been nothing but trouble with it. The longer i have it the more that seems to go wrong. Now i have a few issues and were wondering if these were normal or not really.
The first issue i have is with the touch pad button. Over time it feels as if it has become slightly raised to one side since i tend to use the left side of it to click down on and my right hand to maneuver the track pad. Anyway basically the right side has now become raised up and makes a horrible clicking noise whenever its used and has to be pressed down with alot of pressure.
Another issue i've had is the heat of my laptop. I know they get hot on your legs which isn't the issue. I'm more worried if it's healthy for it to be so hot. Using a widget i have i can check the temp of certain parts, some parts get up to 70 degrees celcius or more =/. On a normal computer that would mean goodbye from what i know.
Atm just using safari and nothing else but coconut battery open here's the following temperatures (Degrees Celcius):
    HD: 42
    CPU A: 57
    Airport Card: 55
    Enclosure base: 36
    GPU Diode: 65
    GPU Heatsink: 56
    Heat Sink A: 57
    Heat sink B: 45
Now I'm a big multi tasker, and when i have photoshop, firefox, safari (I us them both for different tasks) and illustartor open as well as MSN and skype these can get in excess of 60 degrees C. When playing games it gets even worse, often 70+ degrees C. Now these temperatures are worrying to me. Should i be worried?
Now i also have the issue of my macbook pro being horribly sluggish. My hard drive has 60GB free. Now what possibly may be the problem is I have windows XP dual booted as well as I often use a virtual machine for MIRC (I have yet to find a decent alternate mac based client i'm happy with). Anyway what can i do to increase my performance, because i'm not very happy right now with how sluggish it gets.
Another problem is the damned chargers. I am currently on my third one. I'm worried that when my warrenty goes im going to have to keep replacing them =/. My first one basically overheated, sparked and died. Wouldnt work no more. Second one the cord had exposed wires at the base of the charger. Now has anyone else had issues with this?
Ok, and that's it for now.

What gets to 70ºC, smash_you2 ? There is nothing abnormal about CPU temps around 70ºC when the computer is working moderately hard. Core 2 Duo temps can get much higher than this. Many Dell users, for example were reporting temps closer to 100ºC for their C2D CPU's on their discussion boards recently. 70ºC is typical of working fairly hard, but far from extreme.
One thing I would be worried about from your comments, though, is the suggestion of deformation in the track pad/ button area. THis can sometimes result from a defective battery becoming deformed. THis, in turn can result in greater heat from the charging system and the battery itself. I'd be more stressed about this possibility than the temperatures that your widget is quoting. Check your battery condition using system profiler.
Running in "dual boot" mode will, of course, always diminish performance generally, as your computer won't have the same CPU and memory resources available for the primary OS that it would otherwise possess.
    Cheers

  • Mac Mini Server VPN Issues - Driving me insane

    Mac Mini Late 2012
    Late 2012
    Software  OS X 10.8.2 (12C2034)
    Server Version 2.2(166)
Previous Issues experiencing: Before i rang apple support and spoke with enterprise support i had no luck at all for weeks getting the VPN connected.
After calling support it seemed to have something to do with my useraccount - Guided through the process of creating new dummy account and trying to connect then. Which sssucceeded..!!!
However. Back on my main account and deleting other user accounts im facing great difficulty setting up a VPN for the purpose of a VPN.
The issue now is: Once i get connected to my mac successfully from my iPhone using the VPN server all is good to go.
However. WHen i restart my computer (For testing purposes this was done) When the MacOS boots up again I have to relog into the Server app. Resign into the program, THen try and reconnect my VPN (WHich will be impossible to do if im out of the country). But it doesnt end there. I keep having to reisue a new Shared Password. FOr testing i Used 1234abcd. Got a good connection - Proceeded with restart and then had to change 12345abcd.
So i have tested this well over 50 times. Trying to find a solution.
In summary: Everytime i use the MAC Mini Server, I have to.
    1 Auto login.
2 Repopen the Server.app even though i have enabled it to autostart.
    3. Log into the server app (Not another networks Server)
    4 Change my shared password
5 Try and reconnect and pray it works.
Whats the quick fix for this. Its driving me insain and honestly making this a 1000$ peice of junk. Its hopeless regarding a server. I want it to be completely operational when i leave the country. My server is designed to Shut on and off between down times (Night Times) when i wake up i jsut want to be able to reconnect via a VPN and no issues, be on my way with life. Not having to wory about remote logging into the PC to then reset up the server.
    Any help please!

I sometimes get this same message window or a VPN Not Authorized window after rebooting my server. I have the Mac Mini late-2012 base model running OS X Server. When I do, I just try reconnecting and after no more than 3 attempts a connection is made either by my rMBP or my iPhone5.
I leave my server running 24/7 and I rarely get either of the two messages mentioned above.
You shouldn't need to open the Server.app unless you need to manage services. The Server services you configured should start everytime you restart. I have the Server.app icon on my Dock, but I do not launch it automatically. I manually click to launch it when I need to manage the Server, Accounts or Services.

  • Outlook 2011 for mac daylight savings time issue

    Hello,
I have a problem in my company where after daylight savings time meetings are shown an hour off in the calendar, but in the body of the meeting the time seems fine. The real problem is when after updating the meeting from it's body (just pressing save and
close) the meeting is bloated by an hour.
E.g. if a meeting after daylight savings time is from 11:00 to 12:00, it's shown on the calendar  from 12:00 to 13:00, but after updating the meeting it's shown from 11:00-13:00.
This happens only on the macs in the company.
    Thank you.

  • Have I wasted my money going Mac?  Optical Disc Issue!

This is strange but when using OSX and I insert a disc in my DVD drive sometimes it sees it and sometimes it doesn't and it wont then let me eject it. However if I then restart my machine it will see it and let me eject it (so far).
The discs I've tried have been audio CD's and also the OSX Installation discs and I just cannot figure out a pattern to it. Just reinstalled the OS and worked fine as usual until I inserted the OS DVD again.
When this phenomenon occurs I cannot log out and test it as another user account as per Apple Supports suggestion as it goes to a plain blue screen with the timer wheel just spinning and also cannot restart without holding in the power button.
Its driving me nuts and I've spoken to Apple Phone support who just advise if it's a software glitch and I take it to the Apple store they will charge me and it will take at least 2 weeks...what so I do?
Works fine when booted into Vista every time...
    Aaaargh

If the iMac is under one year old, you are covered by the one-year warranty.
I got my Power Mac G5 repaired for a hardware issue in three days, by taking it to an Apple Store. I don't see how any phone tech support person can say it will take two weeks without even knowing what is wrong.
If it was me, I would back up any personal data I have on the iMac, and reinstall Mac OS X from the original discs. Use the Option to +Erase and Install+. That would basically confirm it is a hardware problem, if the problem recurs, because you are using fresh installation. If the problem does not recur, you've fixed your problem; restore your data and rock on...
If you need more details on reinstalling Mac OS X, please post back.
