More psychotic WLST behavior

So we're porting deployment scripts from standalone to clustered implementations of OSB 11.1.1.6 on WLS 10.3.6.
When trying to set attributes on a Uniform Distributed Topic, WLST is being completely retarded and refuses to navigate to the mbean for the object, although it's easily navigable from the wlst.sh shell.
Furthermore, the code that's performing this step is a copy of the code that does the same function for a long list of distributed queues without complaining.
So anyway, I've got a lookup function that checks for the existence of the topic:
cd('/JMSSystemResources/blahSystemModule/JMSResource/blahSystemModule')
cmo.lookupUniformDistributedTopic('TopicName') <== returns true, so we proceed
cd('/JMSSystemResources/blahSystemModule/JMSResource/blahSystemModule/UniformDistributedTopics/TopicName')
This throws the familiar:
File "<iostream>", line 182, in cd
File "<iostream>", line 1847, in raiseWLSTException
WLSTException: Error cding to the MBean
All pretty routine, but why can I navigate to it in WLST?:
wls:/blah_domain/serverConfig> cd('/JMSSystemResources/blahSystemModule/JMSResource/blahSystemModule/UniformDistributedTopics/TopicName')
wls:/blah_domain/serverConfig/JMSSystemResources/blahSystemModule/JMSResource/blahSystemModule/UniformDistributedTopics/TopicName>
A more relevant question than "Why is WLST so freakin' retarded?" might be, "How do I get the runtime to give me more detailed debug info?"
Cheers!

Naturally, I'm the impaired one. Kindly ignore.

  • More on State behaviors

    With the following code I overwrite the click behavior and
    pass control to a child container, at least in theory. Problem is,
    it does not work:
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
    <mx:Application xmlns:mx="
    http://www.adobe.com/2006/mxml"
    layout="absolute" width="100%" height="100%"
    backgroundColor="#FFFFFF">
    <mx:states>
    <mx:State name="open1">
    <mx:SetProperty target="{cat1}" name="width"
    value="390"/>
    <mx:SetProperty target="{cat1}" name="height"
    value="390"/>
    <mx:SetStyle target="{cat1}" name="left" value="0"/>
    <mx:SetStyle target="{cat1}" name="top" value="0"/>
    <mx:SetEventHandler target="{cat1}" name="click"/>
    <mx:SetProperty target="{cat1}" name="useHandCursor"
    value="false"/>
    <mx:SetProperty target="{cat1}" name="mouseEnabled"
    value="false"/>
    <mx:SetProperty target="{cat1}" name="buttonMode"
    value="false"/>
    <mx:AddChild relativeTo="{cat1}" position="lastChild">
    <mx:Canvas x="95" y="100" width="200" height="200"
    click="{currentState='';}" backgroundColor="#ffffff"
    buttonMode="true" mouseEnabled="true" useHandCursor="true">
    </mx:Canvas>
    </mx:AddChild>
    </mx:State>
    </mx:states>
    <mx:Canvas id="mystage" width="390" height="390"
    horizontalCenter="0" resizeEffect="Resize">
    <mx:Canvas id="cat1" left="60" top="60" width="150"
    height="150" backgroundColor="#999999"
    click="{currentState='open1';}" useHandCursor="true"
    buttonMode="true" mouseEnabled="true" mouseChildren="true"/>
    </mx:Canvas >
    </mx:Application>

    You don't need to override click behavior in this case.
    The problem is, you are adding the child container to the
    main container and both define click event. By default, event
    propagates so when you click the child container, click event of
    parent container also fires and it reverts back the currentState.
    To fix this, you need to tell the child container to not
    propagate the event by setting event.stopPropagation() to false. So
    your code would look like:
    <mx:AddChild relativeTo="{cat1}" position="lastChild">
    <mx:Canvas x="95" y="100" width="200" height="200"
    click="currentState='';event.stopPropagation()"
    backgroundColor="#ffffff" buttonMode="true" mouseEnabled="true"
    useHandCursor="true">
    </mx:Canvas>
    </mx:AddChild>
    BTW, you don't have to define event handlers in curly braces.
    Thanks,

  • More funny ToC behavior

    Even though I'm Dutch and live in Holland, I normally use English for the sytem-language. Now I found that when you create a new iBook, in the ToC you'll find Chapter 1, Chapter 2 etc. There seems to be no way to change that. But when I set my system-language to Dutch and create a new iBook, I get the Dutch words for Chapter (Hoofdstuk) and Section (Sectie). However, an iBook started while the system-language was English retains the English ToC.
    That means that if I create a book in English first and than decide to make a Dutch (or French or whatever) translation I will need to do the book from scratch just to get the ToC in the desired language...
    Am I missing something or is this another entry for the to-do-list @ Apple?

  • Connection failover and transaction failover

    Connection failover and transaction failover
    I need to know more about a behavior in a RAC cluster. When a node goes down that is executing one of my transaction through JDBC , does the connection and transaction failover to a new node without me needing to restart tran or reconnect ?
    Please provide some insight
    Thanks

    Transactions are NOT automatically rolled back. The application must do this otherwise the session will get disconnected.
    If you code TAF, all sessions will failover to the backup connection. You can specify that select statements are automatically re-executed after the failover. Insert/update/delete transactions must be explicitly rolled back and resubmitted by the application.
    IF you are using an ORacle Connection pool, the connection pool will automatically cleanup connections to the failed instance, abort inflight transactions. The application will either retry or it will propagate the error to the end user.
    See the whitepaper on the OTN RAC page (otn.oracle.com/rac) Workload Management with Oracle RAC for more information.

  • Shared Project Workflow Problem: Hitting a Wall with Markers

    Hi there,
    Apologies in advance for the long note.  We're using Adobe CC to edit and finish commercials and are having a significant issue regarding shared project workflow.  First, some context:
    We often edit projects remotely.  When this happens, assistants and other editors who remain in LA will have access to the media on our SAN while the editor and assistant traveling out of town will have their own copy of the media.  I know Adobe Anywhere would solve any issue relating to two identical sets of media in use in different cities, but we're a small shop and the hardware and software expense don't make sense for us at this time.  Please do not respond to anything mentioned from here on by stating we should just get Adobe Anywhere.  Thanks.
    What will regularly happen is that the remote editor and assistant will need work done on the project here in LA while they're in session with the clients.  Sometimes this work involves marking up clips with comment markers so the editor can more easily locate a specific moment.  Here's where the problem arises.
    Unlike FCP and Avid, Premiere handles markers within the clip's metadata.  So, if I have two separate projects linking to separate but identical instances of media, one of those media instances gets updated with new markers, there is currently no way to get those markers to the other project without also shuttling the new marked-up media.  This is not possible when a remote editor needs dailies marked up in a couple hours and is working across the country or abroad.
    But let's assume for the sake of argument that it is possible and we apply this workflow.  Let's also assume that in the time it takes the local assistant to mark up the clips for the remote editor, the editor has added a couple markers of his own, which is reasonable and happens all the time.  Now when the editor links to the newly marked up clips he's received via shipment, he'll wipe out all the markers he's made on his own since giving the order to mark up the footage.  That is a significant inconvenience, especially with clients in the room asking stuff like "can we look at the take where the guy says 'good' instead of 'great'?"
    So what happens if we just have repeating sets of media, so that every time the clips markers get updated, the editor actually imports those clips, even though the picture and audio data in those clips is completely redundant to what's already in the project.  The issues with this are, as I can see it, 1) increasing the amount complexity within the project so that you'd have to scan many bins of dailies to look for a single marker, 2) increasing by orders of magnitude the amount of storage space needed, 3) even if problems 1 and 2 are handled, if you have to go to finish with multiple versions of a cut, and those versions reference separate instances of the same clip from different bins, Premiere's dupe frame detection will not work and you'll need to spend a lot of extra time locating duplicate clips manually before sending your EDL or XML off to final color grading.
    At this point, I think it's necessary to interject something:  we're talking about markers here.  Why is this such a problem?  FCP and Avid have no such issues simply by making markers - even clip markers - part of the project metadata.  From what I understand, Adobe has chosen to do things differently because of dynamic link, so that After Effects and Prelude, for example, could add markers to a clip and those markers would ripple across all instances of that clip in the different applications.  It's a great feature which we take advantage of here from time to time.
    So what's the solution?
    My workaround in CS6, which does not solve the issue of needing to merge clip markers so that an editor's markers and an assistant's markers can be applied to a single piece of media, was to turn off "write XMP ID to Files on Import."  This would generate an XMP sidecar file which could be easily passed along with a project file to the remote editor, who could then overwrite his local XMP sidecars with the new ones containing the new marker info.
    However, in Premiere CC that is no longer possible.  It appears that if Premiere CC can access the XMP ID on a file, it will not generate a sidecar regardless of what you have set in your media preferences.  We use ProRes Proxy as our dailies format (again, please no comments on this, it is not up for debate at this time) and Premiere can get to the XMP ID within the files and will not, no matter what it seems, generate an XMP sidecar.
    We could change the company workflow to use DNxHD 36 instead of ProRes Proxy, which would give us XMP sidecars, but that would not solve the issue of needing to merge marker lists between projects non-destructively.
    The best solution I can think of would be to have a script or some kind or built-in feature which would allow for the batch export, import and merging of marker lists.  This way Adobe could keep its current clip-metadata-based marker workflow while giving professional users needing more flexible marker behavior the ability to have assistants non-destructively modify clip markers without necessitating the creation of extra media or project complexity.
    I would really love some input on this and ideas from the pro community out there who has experience with shared project workflows - especially projects being shared remotely.  There's not a lot of info out there about this and it would be great to hear what others are doing.
    Thanks a million for sticking with this, if you've made it this far.
    Best,
    Jon

    Thanks Jim,
    I understand that Adobe Anywhere solves this, but there should be this fairly basic functionality (which exists in Avid and FCP) in a non-enterprise edition of the software.  I have submitted a couple different feature requests about this, going back to CS5, so hopefully enough people make similar requests for a fix to be implemented.  Adobe Anywhere is really not a solution for our small shop as currently configured/priced, especially when we can have editors working remotely with very affordable USB 3 drives.  The only hangup is the markers, which just isn't worth a 5 figure fix.  As such it's hard to consider the problem solved for either us or any small shop or post crew.
    Best,
    Jon

  • Trainer and New Workarea in WPB

    I created a new workarea from manager in WPB. Everything has worked fine within it so far except when I try to view the files as a library I get the error message in the image below:
    The library in the central workarea works fine. Is this an issue with manager? Or is something wrong with the individual content stored in the new workarea?
    Thanks

    Hi Stephen,
    No need to install trainer.
    In producer, select workarea right click then more -> set synchronization behavior for all objects i.e., resources from local to central workarea.
    Hope it helps.

  • Dwh's current take on SCP (Snap-Crackle-P

    I think that many people could solve their SCP problems mainly by looking at the problem differently. The main reason for this post is to try to help that happen. In a sense, of course, this will tend to validate my position or not, depending whether significantly more people start reporting getting rid of SCP or not. It is <i>not</i> my intent to defend my position - I think there's been plenty of that in other threads - and I intend to ignore any replies which are simply argumentati've, because experience has shown that responding makes the thread length explode, which would just bury my intended message underneath that kind of traffic. In fact, I've decided I will give all such argumentati've posts in this thread a "" rating as further encouragement to argue with me in some other thread.
    OK, you've got SCP. How do I suggest you approach it's
    First, do not assume your SCP has the same cause as everybody else's. I'm going to talk about the bus latency cause, because that's the one I think is behind the bulk of the complaints, but yours might be something else: you might be one of the unlucky people whose card is defecti've, for example (that's going to happen to some people, and it could be you).
    Second, think of your soundcard symptoms as possibly <i>revealing</i> a problem in your system, much as canaries were used in coal mines because they are more sensiti've to toxic gases and would die before it was too late for the miners to get out. This suggests that the soundcard may be telling you to look elsewhere, and I suggest that for this particular problem, that's actually a good way to go. So, for this particular problem, ask yourself what <i>other</i> devices seem to be acti've when you hear SCP. For example, if you hear SCP when you see the disk activity LED flash, that's a big clue. Pay attention to stuff like that.
    I'll get into why's later on, but for now, the kind of device most likely to be behind SCP is a relati'vely smart device geared for high performance, particularly video cards and busmastering disk controllers (especially RAID controllers), although network cards and TV cards are examples which don't seem to me to fit that mold, but sometimes seem to be behind SCP.
    I think the first thing to try is to do simple things which may evoke SCP or make it worse. I suggest rapidly scrolling a large window up and down while playing audio is a good basic test for the video card. Similarly, copying a large file (or better, running a disk benchmark) while playing audio is a good basic test for disk controllers.
    The next thing to try is to temporarily change settings which affect driver behavior. Examples are lowering the video acceleration and disk read ahead settings. These are things easily changed and changed back. If they stop SCP, this casts strong suspicion toward the device associated with them.
    Progressing to steps which require some more effort, I am convinced these problems are fundamentally due to some design weaknesses in the PCI and PCIe buses themselves. However, there's really nothing that you can do about that. The only available true fix is having drivers for vulnerable devices take steps which avoid the situation which sets off the problem. So, this means it's a good idea to make sure all your drivers are current, including the drivers for any devices which are integrated into your motherboard. Then, if that doesn't help, see if you can find some non-current drivers to try for those devices which were already current, and try those. Sometimes you can revert to generic drivers which are built into the operating system. For example, if you remove your video card drivers, this will happen. The idea is to try a completely different driver to see if it affects the symptoms. I don't suggest running anything other than the current drivers supplied by the device manufacturer as a real solution, but it can be a very effecti've diagnostic tactic, and it can be useful information when trying to get the official driver fixed (i.e. if you can tell your video card maker that your soundcard noises stopped when you removed their video card driver...). Falling back to generic drivers may mean advanced hardware features won't be used, so if you're only experiencing SCP when there is high-intensity game action on your two-card SLI graphics rig, it may not be diagnostic; but if you get SCP when playing WMV-HD video files, it could well be enlightening.
    If you're not focused on a specific non-soundcard device at this point, my next suggestion is to rule out as much as possible. This probably means opening the computer's case and removing any hardware that is not essential for your testing. You won't be able to remove integrated devices, so for those this means disabling them in the BIOS. (If you have more than one disk controller, you might be able to temporarily rearrange your system to only use one of them at a time for your tests.) Of course, you can take a slower approach like trying disabling devices in Device Manager first, but ultimately this step is to help rule out things you're not suspecting, and there's nothing like removal to make sure something isn't influencing your symptoms. If this approach proves fruitful, putting things back together piece by piece until the problems recur should cast suspicion on the last device you put back or enabled. Unfortunately, simplifying your system can make SCP go away simply by slightly improving bus latency performance without actually fixing it. So, this isolation process can only suggest which device is really behind your system's bus latency problems, and which driver you really need fixed (or device with bad drivers you might consider replacing).
    If you still get SCP with your system stripped down with only essential devices left, you will at least have a smaller number of prime suspects, unless you are in a position to try substituting other devices. That's often not really practical, but if you own a computer store, or have very generous and helpful friends, it may be an option.
    Ultimately, if you can figure out which device to focus on, and can find drivers for it that address the bus retry problem, you should be able to make just that one substitution, and really solve bus-latency-caused SCP, not just keep it at bay.
    In some cases it may be useful to record the SCP via What-U-Hear and/or Wave, at the right sample rates, and look at it in a suitable wav editor. This can give clues as to whether the SCP is due to bus latency or something else. Within reason, I'm quite willing to try to help out in individual cases in this thread if you're trying to follow my advice. Feel free to ask questions, etc.
    Now, to explain where I'm coming from a little.
    There's a bottom line here. If you're talking about bus latency, which is how long a device has to wait to get the bus after making a request for it, in terms of 00's of microseconds (more than 3,000 bus-cycle times), or more, for something that operates at the speed of the PCI bus, that's all you need to know that something is seriously out of whack. It's also all you need to know to rule out the device that is waiting as being the cause of the delay. The point here is that we're not talking about sub-optimal bus latency, nor even poor bus latency, but "insanely awful" bus latency.
    Any analogy is going to be a stretch here, but imagine a traffic signal in a city that does not permit a right turn on a red light. We can consider the latency a car experiences to be the time from when it arri'ves at the intersection controlled by the light to when that car gets a green light. Now, considering the normal speed of cars, etc., suppose I start talking to you about timing the light for a two-hour cycle, i.e. about one hour green, a few seconds of yellow, and about one hour red. That would be more than completely nuts, right? Well, the kinds of bus latency CL has measured is that kind of nuts. It really is.
    (While I understand the arguments that if CL makes a sound card at all they should go to whatever lengths to make sure it works irregardless, there must be some point where those arguments just get unfair if the infrastructure upon which CL relies, but does not control, is sufficiently insane. That's why I personally can't bring myself to blame CL, and instead look to the design of the infrastructure first, and whatever is able to avoid causing the "insanely awful" bus latency second.)
    While bus latency as high as has been reported is sufficient to explain a reasonably-designed soundcard producing the kinds of symptoms that are being observed, and that the device experiencing that kind of bus latency isn't that cause of it, it's not enough information to determine the cause. I've said there are really only two plausible things that can explain it. Either the controls to limit the length of an individual bus transaction (after the bus has been requested) fail to do so under some conditions, or after a master requests the bus, others are being given multiple turns before the bus is finally granted (i.e. you ask for the bus, but your "turn" keeps getting skipped). (The only other possibilities are either essentially even more insane bus behavior, unless your position is that CL's engineers and others are so dumb they can't use equipment like bus analyzers to measure the latency their device is exposed to, or that they are just plain lying.)
    Initially my instincts had me leaning toward the first of the two cases: something wrong with the transaction latency controls. Currently, it looks like it's really the second case: one device is getting more than one transaction when others are waiting. This is after I've been able to look at the PCI specs. (Because my access is through a pcisig.org member company, I don't feel comfortable quoting from the specs., nor saying more than a minimum about their contents that is relevant.)
    "Bus retry" is when a transfer is stopped by the addressed device before any data transfer has occurred. It carries a special implication that the same transaction is to be retried. It seems to be designed as a way for a slow device to delay things (a little) until it can get ready.
    The failure mode I have seen described is that the host bridge (essentially the processor connection to the bus), addresses a device and then does bus retry transactions for an insanely long time. The device has some kind of small queue of things to do, which has become full, and the device signals bus retry until the full condition ends. The host bridge seems to dedicate itself to this one task, so this may block other processor I/O operations. Since the bus retry transactions do finish, albeit early, it would seem that other bus masters, like the CL soundcards at issue, should be able get the bus while this is going on, but that doesn't seem to happen. In looking over the PCI 3.0 spec, I only find 2 things which seem relevant.
    There is a 0 microsecond limit on bus retry looping of a specific kind, but there is no hardware enforcement; the spec explicitly permits proper avoidance to be implemented in device drivers. If this is overlooked, failure lurks for spec-conformant hardware, and I think it's easy to overlook this.
    Secondly, there are ways some masters can get an exclusi've lock of the bus, and some situations where the lock semantics can result in data overruns for video/audio/communications devices, to the extent that the 3.0 spec discourages the use of the LOCK# signal and hopes to remove completely it in the future.
    I also tend to think that having 2 basic causes for such grotesque, long-standing problems is pretty unlikely, though not impossible. So far I don't see a need to speculate to the contrary, which is to say I am inclined to apply Occam's razor to this, so long as the symptoms and hard evidence seem to be covered by one basic explanation.
    My current take on all this is that it's likely been standard practice for host bridges to control bus deadlocks and operation sequencing problems by some combination of bus locking and transaction ordering, with the net effect that the bus gets dedicated to bus retry loops when they occur. It's likely that these practices have been carried to the PCIe bus (because they control potentially serious problems). In PCIe-bus machines, the PCI bus hangs off the PCIe bus by means of a PCIe/PCI bridge. That means that if there is a locked bus-retry pathology on the PCIe bus, I'd expect PCI devices to see the PCI bus appear to go idle for the duration even though there are requests for the PCI bus. That seems to me to be consistent with the CL NF4 statement that it was "...the first motherboard on which these extremely long PCI service holdoffs have been observed by Creative, where another PCI device in the system was not causing the holdoff."
    This suggests that chipsets might be able to do something about this. If the host bridge released the lock on the bus, at least when ending a "bus retry" transaction, it seems this would help busmastering soundcards, like the X-Fi, by letting them break in during a bus-retry loop. That should eliminate the huge bus latency measurements. However, the bridge would have to be doing something pretty complex to let other driver tasks past an unlocked bus-retry loop, so I think this could still be a big bottleneck. For this not to be a problem area, I think extended bus-retry loops have to be prevented.
    Right now, extended bus-retry loops can be prevented by driver-avoidance, which IMO is a workaround, not a true solution. If you can hunt down and deal with the culprit drivers, however, at least it does fix things; it's just that that can be darn hard to accomplish. From a bus protocol standpoint, this kind of thing needs an enforced limit. A device which simply has slow circuitry doesn't need very many retry cycles, and that's what this is useful for. A device which (ab)uses it because its work queue is full leads to these problems, because the right thing to happen is do other things with the bus until the device work queue has room. In other words, this isn't a "wait for me" situation, it's a "come back later" one. Exceeding some generous "wait for me" limit should have been a reject reflected back to the driver. There is more than one reasonable way to do something like that, so I'm not going suggest how the PCI bus might have been different to help with that; the small hard limit is sufficient: the driver can look at a status bit, and request an interrupt from the device when the bit clears, as the PCI bus stands now.

    . Perhaps NVidia simply makes their 6x PCIe slots ultra high priority so their video cards can squeeze out every last frame per second in SLI mode as possible, without regard to being "nice" to other add-in cards by allowing them proper bus time?
    While that's certainly not something I can rule out, I think it's much more likely the bus-retry pathology has simply spread to PCIe, having not been dealt with in PCI. But, you say, PCIe is based on serial point-to-point technology and can be doing more than one thing at at time. It's also based on the PCI programming model and I think it likely there are bottleneck points around the setting up of transfers. What that means is that the arbiter does one grant at a time, but can continue onto others unless they would conflict or it runs out of some needed resource, so when that process is locked by the PCIe Host Bridge while it tries to start up a transfer to a device that keeps responding to each attempt with bus retry, it's entirely possible the same thing happens as for the PCI bus, even though normally the PCIe bus <i>can indeed</i> do some numbers of multiple transfers in parallel.
    2. Perhaps PCIe won't have this problem, once motherboards are 00% PCIe without any old PCI slots? I think this may happen, because PCIe is based on serial point-to-point technology as opposed to the older PCI based on parallel shared-bus technology.
    If there was a Soundblaster X-Fi card with PCIe for connectivity (even though it doesn't need the bandwidth), then perhaps it wouldn't have any of these ongoing problems any more at all.
    Hopefully, some day very soon, Creative Labs will make a sound card for PCIe. There sure is a high demand for it now, which I'm sure will only increase -- especially when PCI gets phased out completely just like ISA was a few years ago!
    My current take is that this problem really appears to have spread to PCIe. Furthermore, CL has stated that PCIe has tested to be <i>even worse</i> than PCI for audio. It's better for moving more data faster, but seems to be even worse at moving small amounts of data promptly. (This is what can happen if only throughput is your God.) I'm very inclined to believe the reason for this is really that the bus-retry pathology gets worse as the bus gets faster, and I take it as some of the evidence for the problem having spread to PCIe.

    well, it's more of a behavior, for lack of a better word, of  the component's width (rather than a documented property) You won't find it in the class definition. So, you just need to set the width.  In your code, you originally had;
    <mx:Text id="t" fontWeight="bold" htmlText="You can format the text in a Text control using HTML tags,which are applied after the control's CSS"/>
    you just need to set the width for that component, something like  <mx:Text id="t" width="100%" . . . />  just as you did with the others.  As soon as I set a width on it, it wrapped.
    * note, after setting the width, be sure to 'refresh' your design view to update your changes.

  • Bizarre WiFi Connectivity Issue; Self-Assigned IPs, Static IP Doesn't work

    The short and sweet of the problem: Macs/Apple Devices are pulling self-assigned IP addresses when connecting to a Linksys EA6900/AC1900 router.
    Here’s the detail: I am working at an office with 1 Airport Extreme and 1 Linksys EA6900/AC1900, both are configured for Bridge Mode and both use WPA. DHCP is being handled by a Watchguard XTM5 series firewall.
    When Macs (and often iPhones) connect to the Linksys (on 2.4 or 5Ghz) they get a self-assigned IP address. If you enter a manual address you still do not have any connectivity. However, if you connect to the Extreme you will instantly get an IP address, and if you switch to the Linksys your DHCP address will carry over and you will retain connectivity. This problem does not happen to the Windows machines in the office- they all connect to all base stations without any issue. Total users on the network range from 5 to 20 WiFi users at any given time plus and AppleTV (also affected).
    More info: When there are between 5-10 people in the conference room for a morning meeting the Macs will all revert to self-assigned addresses (even if they were working before). The workaround has been to connect to the Extreme, but there are occasions when this occurs that the Extreme will also not seem to pass the DHCP addresses from the firewall; addresses become self-assigned and you lose all internet. To make matters more odd, this behavior seems to really only affect the network during business hours; after hours the Linksys works pretty much normally and any device can connect without issue.
    Things I’ve done: Run Wireshark and located a number of rogue devices that were handing out overlapping DHCP addresses. Identified machines that were ARP storming and removed them. Expanded the DHCP pool so that we aren’t running out of addresses and confirmed that we had enough by checking the logs.
    More things I’ve done: Used Netspot to check signal strength and channel overlap and isolation. I have mapped the signal strength by location and we have strong signals to the various locations (the Linksys AP is 7 feet from the conference room). I have checked that the firmware is the most recent version.
    I can’t find any logical reason for the Macs (and pretty much only the Macs/Apple devices) to not be picking up DHCP info through the bridge mode devices. I would tell them to get another Extreme but they are going to be deploying a Cisco Meraki system soon and I suspect that this problem will persist since the Linksys was put in place because the last AP displayed the same behavior with the Macs picking up self-assigned IPs. Affected Macs range from 2010 era MBP and Air to 2013 MBP and Air and they are running OSX 10.8 through 10.10.
    As for the history of this network, I just walked into this company and know very little about how well it worked before, but apparently it has always been flaky according to the staff.

    I agree that something isn't right; I am going to cut over DHCP services from the Watchguard to the newly deployed OS X Server tonight and see  if that changes anything.
    On the other hand, faulty DHCP server/client settings doesn't explain why applying a static IP still leaves you with no connectivity. I think that clue is also fairly important but I can't figure out what would be blocking connectivity on a static IP setup.

  • Windows 8.1 Won't get updates in audit mode.

    I just installed Windows 8.1 in a Hyper-V virtual machine. The release version that was distributed through msdn not the preview. I enter audit mode as soon as I can, so there have been no changes or customization applied to the install prior to entering
    audit mode. I start up windows update to search for new updates. The status is displayed as "Checking for updates..." "Most recent check for updates: Never." "Updates were installed: Never." The status never changes from "Checking
    for updates...". I have even left it running over night and it still says "Checking for updates...". There is never any error message or failure. Network connectivity is functional. I have attempted an install on a physical machine as well with
    the same result. If instead of entering audit mode a proceed through setting up windows and a user account, updates will work just fine. There should be an update to defender as well as an update to ie11.
    I considered the possibility of a corrupt download so I compared the sha-1 hash to what is listed on the msdn download page and it does match.

     Emphasis added.
    Thank You for sharing the logs. I was able to reproduce the issue in my virtual environment. To understand more about this behavior, I engaged the Product Group and I have been informed that
    this behavior is By Design. WU uses the OOBEComplete() Windows API call to determine whether OOBE is in progress or not, and if so, it will not perform automatic or UI update searches. HRESULT code 0x8024a008 is the WU error code WU_E_AU_OOBE_IN_PROGRESS.
    WU automatic and UI updates won’t run while Setup reports that OOBE is still in progress. This is to prevent automatic updates from causing a system reboot during OOBE, which is – needless to say – a Very Bad Thing. This problem has always existed. Unfortunately,
    when the computer is in Sysprep audit mode, Setup will report to WU that OOBE is in progress even though it might not actually be so. This is the reason that updates from WU UIs are blocked in audit mode.
    I was having the same exact issue when creating an updated WDS image for deployment to select end-users for testing.  At first, I thought I was doing something wrong.  This process--having a VM boot into audit mode so that it can be fully updated
    with Windows Updates along with new and updated third-party applications so to become the baseline/template for deployment--has worked wonderfully since the Vista days.  And it worked perfectly with Windows 8.  Why did Microsoft choose to deprecate
    the functionality is beyond me.
    Its bad enough there is so very little traction in the corporate/Gov't world for Windows 8/8.1.  Now it seems that Microsoft, once again, is hades bent on destroying all that was good with Windows.
    This is to prevent automatic updates from causing a system reboot during OOBE, which is – needless to say – a Very Bad Thing.
    So this was a problem?  Really?  I don't ever recall that happening to me or ever reading about such an issue.  Even if this "issue" was a problem, why not just add another switch to the sysprep command to allow admins to specify
    the allowance of updates.  Something like like sysprep /oobe /audit /AllowUpdates?  Is that too hard or too much to ask?
    So now with the current Windows-won't-update-in-audit-mode default, if I chose to deploy over 200 Windows 8.1 Enterprise clients, I now have to have ALL 200 machines contact Microsoft Update or my internal WSUS (or push via Shavlik) for updates.  Regardless
    of which method is used, the result is that 200 COMPUTERS must consume valuable network bandwidth for updates.  Not to mention there is always several machines that never act right.  Instead of having 200
    identically configured machines, I end up with 200 similarly configured machines.
    Exactly who is making these decisions?  Has anyone experienced the OOBE update issue that Microsoft claims is such a problem?
    So disappointing.

  • How do I download Mail to two Macs from server?

    Lion seems peculiar about this: if I check my (imap att.net) email from my Macbook, the messages load just fine. When I go to my iMac and check email, the messages that have already downloaded to my Macbook aren't offered by the server anymore--they don't download--AND, even stranger, my inbox is mostly empty because messages don't seem to stay locally saved (i.e., on my Mac drive). That means there isn't an archive of all my emails on both my macs for me to search when I need to; whichever Mac I happen to check email on first ends up having more messages. To find an old email, I have to search BOTH Macs, instead of like in Snow Leopard when each Mac would download the same group of new messages off my ISP's server.
    Is this making sense? Basically, it seems that Lion only downloads messages from an email server once and then deletes the original from off the server, so my second Mac can't also download a matching set of incoming emails as well. How do I adjust my settings so that Mac doesn't delete new messages from the server, so I can also download the same messages to my second Mac as well?

    Are you sure your mail account is IMAP? This sounds more like the behavior with a POP account than an IMAP account. With IMAP, messages are never downloaded; they are always on the server (unless manually copied) and just marked as being read. Please confirm your type of account and post back.
    Regards.

  • Adobe Reader not opening PDF Portfolio - Flash player error

    I have Acrobat 9 Standard installed on my PC and I created a PDF Portfolio. Acrobat Standard can open that Portfolio just fine.
    I also have Acrobat Reader installed (11.0.2).and have Adobe Flash Player (11.7.700.169) installed. Both Reader and Flash Player work fine independently on PDF or Flash content.
    However when I try to open the PDF portfolio with Reader, I get the following Error:
    :"To view the Flash technology in this FDF file; please install this version of Flash player that supports Adobe reader and Acrobat".
    The Dialog box with the message above has a [Proceed to download page] button (which does nothing but bring up Reader with a black page), a [Learn more] button (similar behavior), and a [Cancel] button.  Both Reader and Flash are the latest versions as of today (4/16/2013).
    Any help or insight with this is appreciated.

  • Cannot delete in a file after it has been open 20 minutes

    After I have a file open for about 20 minutes Delete stops working.  When I hit the key, illustrator appears to lock up for abou 30 seconds, but the feature doesn't delete.  I have to keep closing and reopening the file.  The file is only about 3.5MB in size.  Any ideas on how to improve this?

    Yes, I was thinking of PS and AE at the time of writing this. However, AI has an option for setting this as well. If you open up the AIPrefs file in your user home directory (e.g. on Vista 64bit C:\Users\Mylenium\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Adobe Illustrator CS4 Settings\en_US), there is a pair of lines reading
    /maxUndoDepth 200
    /undoDepth 5
    By editing the maxUndoDepth value, it may be possible to get a more memory friendly behavior on some systems.

  • File not saving correctly

    Hi all, Recently I have been having trouble saving my stamped files, when i go into a file, stamp it & the save it the following error appears " The document cannot be saved, could not save to this filename, please save the document with a different name or in a different folder" and it turns it into a .tmp file, so then i have to go back into 'save as' select the same file name again & it works, this has just started in December i have not done any updates, any help?

    Hello Nakul,
    We have exact error message with Reader XI when signing a file on network and it attempts to save over existing file.  Not a problem on local drive.  This started after updating Dec 22 (adobe release was a few days earlier).  Renaming is a hassle and leaves files that have to be deleted.
    If there is a TSB#?
    To explain a little more of the behavior just as above.  When we get the error, Reader will have just renamed it ####.temp.  If you reattempt in same session and then select the original file name (operating under .tmp) then it can work sometimes.  However, sometimes at that point the user now has a greyed out 'sign document' button and can no longer sign.  Using File Open in Reader and still same issue.
    General logic here is this is an Adobe issue and not a Windows solution and would like to confirm or find solution here.
    Thank You very much for any information.

  • Reuse of Map.Entry

    Hi,
    I'm writing some Map implementations and warppers and i have specific question.
    Is Map.Entry reusable after calling next iterator.next().
    Questionable code. Is this valid.
    Map.Entry first = null;
    for( Iterator i = myMap.entrySet().iterator()) {
      Map.Entry entry1 = (Map.Entry)i.next();
      if( first == null) first = entry1;
      // do something with entry
    // do something with first entry <<<<Does do something with "first" is valid operation,
    or entrySet can return the same object for each entry but with
    some different internal data.
    This is performance question, since in my Map implementation there is
    nothing similar to Map.Entry, so I must create new instance
    of wrapper for each iteration.
    I'd like to return always one instance (shared amont Iterator returned by Map.entrySet().iterator()) pointing to different "real" data.
    Thanks.

    This and many more examples, esp. with wrappers or
    or so called "views" shows weaknes of java.util contracts.I think it should be written in documentation of Map interface.It can be found in the javadocs for the Map.Entry interface:
    A map entry (key-value pair). The Map.entrySet method returns a collection-view
    of the map, whose elements are of this class. The only way to obtain a reference
    to a map entry is from the iterator of this collection-view. These Map.Entry objects
    are valid only for the duration of the iteration; more formally, the behavior of a
    map entry is undefined if the backing map has been modified after the entry was
    returned by the iterator, except through the iterator's own remove operation, or
    through the setValue operation on a map entry returned by the iterator.
    kind regards,
    Jos
