More Subtitling Madness

I've got a 90 min movie with 4 subtitle tracks (ENG, FR, IT, ESP) all imported from .txt scripts. I've got about 2000 subtitles. I'm living a nightmare.
Here is what I'm struggling with:
1. If I try to import the ST file with the indication to start at 00:00:04:00 instead of at 00:00:00:00, it SUBTRACTS 4 seconds instead of pushing them forward.
-my workaround: import normally, double-click the whole track and just drag them all 4 seconds down the timeline.
2. AE DVD2 doesn't always fully respect the time code. Some subtitle clips don't reach all the way to their "out" frame so the ST disappears too soon and others just slightly go over the "out". In both cases, these are hairline differences in how the clip is placed on the timeline with regard to its timecode. Technically, it's "there". But in reality, it isn't. And it's extremely annoying, especially when the shot changes and you get this flash of spill-over subtitle on the screen.
-my workaround: using the double-headed arrow, individually dragging each clip out and back to snap to the CTI. Did I say I have 2000 subtitles?
3. AE DVD 2 does NOT respect individual subtitle format changes.
Ex: Off-screen voice=italic subtitle
I individually changed the subtitles concerned to italics, saving my projct as I went, kept working, then closed and got some sleep. I come back to it and discover the entire subtitle tracks are converted to italics and none of the individual font changes were kept either.
I too fell into the faux italic button trap. Thinking it was a short cut when in fact you need to actually pick Italic out of the pull-down menu. But now that I see that regardless of how you change the format, it doesn't matter because it doesn't work no matter how you change the attribute.
I've had all the same error messages as everyone else in this forum, "error creating subtitles", "abnormal situation", "one chance to save". I have rebuilt the project too any times to count, redoing everything (did I mention the 2000 misbehaving subtitles?), and that takes time. Apparently too much time because after a few hours, I get the "out of memory" and/or "once chance to save" message. It's so ridiculous that I have even started saving backups of my backups.
It seems the only way to get the correct subtitles actually onto the dvd is to do everything in one fell swoop, at the risk of having it run out of memory in the process. BTW I turn off everything when using AE DVD2 and hold my breath everytime I click "edit with Photoshop" fearing memory surge and program crash. I've read all the posts here, tried the workarounds people suggest, and nothing is working. I've changed the font, duplicated and deleted tracks, reimported, rechanged, redone and resaved the project and now I'm here to vent. No. I'm here to ask Adobe to figure out the mess so we can all get back to being creative and stop being video "deTECHtives".
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I bought Encore three months ago so I could do one project, right now I am three days behind, everything is done but subtitles... after 60 minutes of subtitles are added it simply crashes during save--oh, did I mention it EATS THE .NCOR FILES WHEN IT CRASHES DURING SAVE? The files literally vanish the moment the error message shows up. I have installed it on two different machines with two different Windows OS, the error is the same on both. So I have 10 minutes of video that is impossible to subtitle, and because I can't export the subtitle track I can't just do the last few minutes in a text editor. The production and distribution folks are waiting on me and I'm going to have my reputation ruined by a stupid piece of software. I've used presentation and movie software since the PC existed, I had a copy of "Action!" the pre-cursor to Flash, and I've NEVER seen a professional product this terrible. On Monday I will be asking for a refund.
I'm seriously considering writing a DVD image, decrypting it with a hacking tool, pulling out the subtitle track, editing it, and re-importing the finished track to Encore.

  • Subtitles made in DVDSP. Need to move them due to a cut in video. How?

I have a 90 minute film with subtitles made in DVDSP. Picture and subtitles were perfectly lined up until I made a 5-second cut in one scene 40 minutes into the film.
I need to move the subtitles from that scene until the end of the movie by 5 seconds.
I was told I can only move one subtitle at a time in DVDSP, is this possible???
Shouldn't there be a way to select them and move them all together?
    Thanks for your help

'Fraid not... the software assumes that your cut is done by the time it gets to DVD SP.

  • Lack of subtitles on iTunes vs more subtitles on DVDs

Why do Apple sell far more movies and television shows on iTunes that have far less Closed Captions than if you bought them on DVD??
Sometimes a series of movies on iTunes would have one or two of them with CC but the other do not, for example on iTunes
For example: On iTunes, Spider-Man and Spider-Man 2 will have CC but Spider-Man 3 do not, same with Iron Man and Iron Man 2 have CC but Iron Man 3 do not.
Yet on DVDs, all three movies would have means of subtitles for the deaf, ALL in the series.
On iTunes, only Back to the Future do have CC but not the last 2, yet on DVDs, all of the triology would have subtitles for the Deaf.
Same for television series, for example the 1st series (known as seasons in American-English) of Red Dwarf (and again same for the second series/season) the first episode do not have CC but the rest do.
And other thing, most people used CAPS LOCK in email or discussion boards or in text messages, and gets told off that using caps lock is like shouting, yet some of the movies on iTunes have some of the CC in caps, examples being Jumpin Jack Flash, and When Worlds Collide. I found it annoying trying to read subtitles that were in caps letters for the whole movie.
Then there's the fact that most movies and television on iTunes seems to lack more subtitles for the deaf when compare to DVDs.
You could get Star Trek: The Original Series, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Star Trek: Voyager, need I go on...? with subtitles for the deaf on DVDs, but on iTunes, it seems so far, only ST:TNG Season 1 & 2 have CC, mind you I haven't downloaded them so I don't know if they're any good.
Disney's Planes as well as Cars which have subtitles for the deaf on DVDs, seems to have no subtitles on iTunes???
If downloads is supposed to be the future and DVDs is going to history books, how come downloads seems so backwards? Have Apple gave up the rights of the disabilies, including the deaf who needs more subtitles as well as proper subtitling (in that case of those iTunes movies that are in CAPS LOCK)!
I'm starting to think it was a mistake for me to use Apple, iTunes, and so on, well I got one good news for Apple, even if I can't enjoy movies on my first generation iPad, then they're lucky i'm not going to jump ship as I still use my iPad for a lot of work, but unless there are more subtitles for the deaf on the same level as DVDs, I'm going to stick with the good old DVDs!!
I don't understand why is there a lack of effort to add subtitles for the deaf on iTunes??

Apple may not have any control over getting movies to sell, but they COULD try to encourage the studios/distributors to see that if downloads is going to be the future, replacing DVDs, then the studios could make a little extra money if they sell their downloaded movies with subtitles, because usually deaf people tend to not bother buying any movies if it got no subtitles.
Apple could say to the studios "If you want to sell your movies via iTunes, and get more money for your box office movies, could you please make an effort to put subtitles on your movies for the deaf people!"  If Apple and other services, like Netflix, could say to the studios "We're not selling those movies unless there are subtitles on them." The studios could lose money if they can't get to sell their movies as downloads.
Surely Apple must've got some friends in high places that could also help encourage studios to make an effort.

  • How to import subtitles made with Final Cut in DVD studio Pro?

    Hello!
I made subtitles for a movie directly on a track of my final cut timeline. How can I import now this into DVD studio pro to make an independant subtitle track?
    thank you.

DVD Studio Pro can work with STL subtitle files. they are nothing more spectacular than a plain text file.
There's a ton of information in DVDSP's online manual, under the Help menu bar item.
search that pdf for "Creating an STL Format Subtitle File".
This file can be configured to display when the user wants to see it or made permanent with the "Force Display" option.
If you export your FCP Timeline the subtitles on it will be burned into the video permanently.

  • More iPod madness

Since the IOS upgrade, the iPad app periodically becomes "out of sync". For example, I'll tap "Big Me" by Foo Fighters and "Big Me" will show in the Now Playing, but a completely different cover art appears AND an entirely different song starts playing that's unrelated to either the song I picked OR the cover art displayed.
Going to task manager and terminating the app then restarting fixes this for a bit, then it starts again. I've already tried reloading my entire library but since it's more than 6,000 songs it takes a REALLY long time and I'd rather not have to go through that again. Any advice?

  • Subtitling made easy?

    Hello everyone
I've just finished DVD authoring of a 52-minute project on Encore DVD CS5 that also contains English subtitles. The client also requested for separate files of this project for web use but with the subs embedded on each file. Since Encore can export a txt file with all subs and timecode, is there a way I could possibly import this file inside Premiere and use it? Otherwise, I'd have to manually create an equal number of lower third titles and place each one separately, which, frankly I would like to avoid, since it's a ton of work. Any suggestion, even for a third party tool would help.
    Thanks

Here's a discussion that might help you. It is focused on youtube, however.

  • Importing subtitles into DVD Studio Pro 4 that were created FCP Studio 6

    Greetings!
So in all the DVD Studio Pro 4 documentation, I couldn't find any work flow that allowed you to create subtitles, via *Text or Boris 3D Titles* in Final Cut Pro Studio 6 and then export or import your work into DVD Studio Pro to be used in the subtitle fields... Is that possible?
After painstakingly entering in subtitles for a feature film line-by-line, timing them perfectly to picture and making them look beautiful with crisp-text & a slight drop-shadow... It would be wonderful to import those files (as graphics files? DVD Studio Pro can import those...) in our DVD for release, with optional subtitles-- Instead of making/encoding 2 versions; with & without subtitles.
What is the best way to export these files, created for the film subtitling in *Text or Boris 3D Titles* so that we can import them into DVD Studio Pro 4 subtitle tracks... Could they be exported with an Alpha Channel so that the background is transparent? And will this then be excepted into DVD Studio Pro 4 to be placed in the subtitle fields?
Please help us conquer this seemingly-necessary procedure... I would really hate to think that to achieve this task we'd have to re-enter, re-design & re-time ALL subtitles to make our DVD... All of your suggestions would be most appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Jason

OK-- I love that I've found a way to answer my own question on this forum (but actually I must credit my buddy James for finding out about 'TitleExchange Pro') It looks pretty cool and should do exactly what I've asked about: Exporting/ Importing subtitles made in FCP to DVD SP...
TitleExchange Pro is a unique tool which makes complicated things simple.
If you ever wished to get your titles out of FCP into DVDSP (or another DVD authoring application), get titles into FCP from another source like DVDSP or STL, or ceate a QT with all your FCP subtitles without the need of rendering (and get automatic selection of language) or just "equalize" your FCP titles TEP will be the right tool.
There's a slight catch but it might be worth it, if this works as well as it states...Cost 135 EUR:) You can download a limited demo version that works for 30 days & 50 titles...If anyone wants to give their feedback on this software, please post it here-- We'd all be interested.
Download & more information about this process at: http://www.spherico.de/filmtools/TitleExchange/
Also, check out this video tutorial on the product... It explains exactly how to do the task-at-hand... http://www.studiodaily.com/main/minisites/finalcutpro/f/mtutorials/6851.html
Hope this finds you all well--

  • Offset subtitles from a stl file

    Hello,
I tried to search the forum but found one related thread regarding offsetting subtitles from an imported stl file. That thread (somebody complaining that they couldn't select and move two or more subtitles in dvdsp 2, still not possible in 4 btw) suggested using stl edit. I had purchased STL edit 1.4 but Micheal Lofquist of Guishen stopped development after releasing v2 due to deminishing interest.
Alas Stl edit 1.4 doesn't seem to work very well with tiger, and v2 is not for sale anymore. Google so far hasn't brought me any alternatives mac-wise
To cut an already too long story short, is there another way to offset subtitles in dvd. Except doing them one by one. The way you deal with subtitles after the've been created or imported in dvdsp seems to be very archaic. The UI resembles FCP but lacks just about every functionality FCP has.
My last struggle with subtitles in dvdsp dates two years back and cost me a night of sleep. Spend that night in copy/paste ****. Now I'm spending half a day just trying to figure how to do this...
Sorry for venting, wanna get some real work done '

    Hello Steve,
thanks for your informative reply. Stl edit 1.4 doesn't let me save files anymore alas. And I asked Micheal Lofquist from Guishen if it still possible to purchase stl edit 2. But he hasn't replied so far. As the product is discontinued I can't blame him. I'm surprised that there wasn't enough interest in his product since it seems such a necessity when working with stl's and subtitles. Oh well.
Thanks for the offer. Really appreciate it. Might take you up on it but I'll try to work it out with the subtitling agency first. Maybe Michael Lofquist will respond soon and let's me buy stl edit. Or maybe he will tell me it was bought by apple to be implemented in dvdsp 5
    Thanks again

  • Serial write takes unexpectedly long when more than 7 bytes are written

    Hi,
    My vi is attached.
As you see, it's very simple.
    - output buffer fifo is set to 128 bytes, which is generously higher than my needs.
    - my baudrate is 2.5 mpbs.
    - I write string of 9 bytes such as 012345678, and the execution time of the vi is around 40 us.
I thought it's because of the blocking structure of the synchronous write, and I decided to switch to asynchronous
write, since I need to go above 20 kHz.
    - when I switch to asynchronous write, it even gets worse, and I get ~58 us. it seems like asynchronous doesn't work at all.
so far, I explained my problem. I also did some simple experiments to debug the problem.
    - when my string is shorter than 8 bytes, everything is beautiful, asynchronous write takes nearly 15 us.
when I enter an 8 bytes or longer string, it jumps up to 58 us again.
what am I doing wrong? I'm stuck here.

The driver might for a lot of reasons not want to or even can't fill up the 8 byte hardware FIFO buffer entirely. This could be for instance since it has to work around some bugs in certain hardware. It might not be necessary for the specific hardware revision in your system but that driver has to work for many different hardware systems.
The magnitude of timing control you try to achieve is simply beyond a software system if you require reliable and hard timings. It may be possible to achieve on a simpler but still powerful embedded system with custom made software drivers and RT OS but not on a more general purpose RT OS even if the hardware is pretty powerful. But such more custom made solutions would be more than a few magnitudes more expensive to develop.
You can keep barking up this tree but it is unlikely that NI can do much about it without redesigning parts of the RT system, which is pretty much out of question as they simply license it from Ardence/IntervalZero and only adapt it where it is strictly necessary to work with their hardware. Most likely their license doesn't even allow them to customize it at will in any other way than is strictly necessary to get it to work on their own hardware.
Your options are as far as I can see, to either rethink the timing requirements or adapt the software in such a way that the bigger delay won't be a problem or to go with a hardware solution based on an FPGA board or similar.
As to the difference of asynchronous write and synchronous that is mostly about what VISA API is called underneath. The LabVIEW function remains blocking for as long as is necessary to pass the data to the OS driver. In synchonous mode the LABVIEW VI calls the synchronous VISA API once and that simply waits until VISA returns from the function. For the asynchronous case LabVIEW calls the asynchonous VISA function and then keeps looping inside its own cooperative multithreading layer until VISA indicates that the asynchonous function has been performed. This is mostly for historical reasons when LabVIEW didn't have OS supported multithreading and all the multithreading happened in the cooperative LabVIEW code scheduler. Nowadays asynchonous VISA mode has almost no benefits anymore but genearlly will cause significantly more CPU load.

  • Submarine - Search and download subtitles

I've tried different software to download appropriate subtitles for movies but didn't like any of them. I wanted something simple and fast. So I decided to write my own subtitle fetcher .
Submarine is a subtitle search and download command-line application for fetching subtitles based on movie file hashes. The subtitles are properly renamed depending on movie filename and subtitle format so they are automatically used by movie players. The application is written entirely in vala and has little runtime dependencies. The source code is hosted on GitHub (http://github.com/blazt/submarine) and there is a package in AUR (http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=51338).
    Currently the program supports:
downloading subtitles for multiple movies at once
downloading subtitles from multiple online services (only one is available for now: http://www.opensubtitles.org)
filtering subtitles by any number of languages
automatically renaming subtitles to movie filenames
automatically retrieving subtitles that are best rated
    Planned:
support more subtitle services (primary goal)
get movie filenames from stdin. Example: find . -iname "*.avi" | submarine -l eng
put subtitle filenames to stdout. Example: submarine -l eng Season01/*.avi | xargs tar -czf Season01.gz
let user select criterion to select subtitles: best subtitle rating, preferred subtitle format, preferred language (if multiple filters are used), preffered server (if multiple servers are used),...
create a shared library for subtitle searching and downloading (long term)
    convert subtitle formats (long term)
Comments and suggestions are very appreciated.

  • Subtitle track turns monitor window into color noise?!

As soon as I added a subtitle track to my encore 1.5 project, the monitor window turns into colored noise.
    http://www.smugmug.com/gallery/4373720_VBrbJ/
The video noise seems to be an upside down image (of a performer on stage).
If I play the video, it turns normal, but the audio track sometimes play normal, sometimes it becomes a constant sine wave.
    What's going on?

A work around is to remove the transcode. However, as I add more subtitle into the track, I run into a "out of memory" pop up. Subsequently, the cursor (red line) redraw leaves behind some un-erased lines, and the bottom border of the subtitle track sometimes is not drawn. Drag-resizing the subtitle also does not redraw until the mouse is released.
Did I really run out of memory? I have 2G on this machine. Or is this an encore config issue? I looked but did not find any memory configuration options.

  • Converting subtitle file length from PAL to NTSC

We're releasing a PAL version of a movie in the UK, whilst another company in the US will issue an NTSC conversion from our PAL master. The NTSC master therefore will run exactly 3.8462% slower than the PAL 25fps master, after standards conversion and speed correction.
We'd like to be able to use our PAL spotted subtitle file for the NTSC release, but I need to know if it's possible to 'stretch' the subtitle file by the required 3.8462% in order for it to match the NTSC running time.
I have tried a shareware app called Subtitler (by exporting the track description file and importing into Subtitler), but it does not allow me to input a stretch as a percentage - merely in frames, seconds, minutes etc, which adds the same amount to each subtitle.
Does anybody out there know of a way to create the modifid subtitle file?

Yes, I have already converted the original supplied .txt file, but (and as with most subtitle files it seems) I have had to tweek it myself and add a whole load more subtitles (directly in DVD Studio Pro), which are translations from Chinese to English, which were not included in the original supplied French to English file (the film is set in China and has both French and Chinese throughout!). I have also created another separate Chinese to English file in DVD Studio Pro. So you see my dilemma...
If only Subtitler was more stable - It crashes every time I import the DVD Studio Pro Item Description file.
A friend converted the original supplied file from PAL to NTSC using the excellent (but PC only) Subtitle Workshop.
I have been in direct contact with the very helpful author of the shareware Subtitler app, and he is working on a revision to fix the bugs.

  • Subtitling and DVD burning

In the next version (>1.51) I would like to see the following:
    1. Improved support of different subtitle formats like srt
    2. Export possibilities of subtitles made in Encore
    3. Better support of Matrox video cards (with most Matrox cards the software crashes when editing subtitles)
    4. Possibility to save VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS folders on the HD so they can be burned on a DVD with other burning software (according to the Helpfile you should always burn directly to DVD in case you want to play the DVD to a home DVD player, something I still do not understand....)
5 Last but not least: less bugs...

This is pretty ridiculous - the product manager for Encore doesn't seem to understand that someone who authors in Encore might actually want to print a hard copy of the subtitles they manually tweaked. I originally created them in Subtitle Workshop then imported into Encore for final timing.
I ended up using a DVD tool from doom9.org called SubRip that goes into the VOB files (Encore output) and does optical character recognition on the subtitle layers so you can get your data back... It works, but it's a real pain - as you have to train it for best results. So I wasted about 8 hours trying to get something that should have taken a few seconds.
The whole subtitle game is pretty strange - too much customization, too many formats, few standards. You'd think something so universal would be set in stone?
Oh, and by the way, it would also be nice to be able to export and print the DVD flowchart, links and other process documentation...
