Motion control through RS232
Hi guys,
I'm trying to use RS232 cable to control motor directly (motor model: Mecapion APD-VS05N). I don't want to buy any motor controller such as PXI 73XX. I was considering using NI Softmotion Module (not sure if its the best way to do), but the motion driver used was not available on NI website. Anyone can help me? Really appreciate if provide with demo VI.
Thanks a lot!
Vv
The Aries drive are nice, I have many currently in use.
I use the 6K platform to control them, never attempted interfacing to them with LabVIEW.
There are sample vi's here (poorly designed) along with a link the to a COM server:
http://www.parkermotion.com/dmxreadyv2/faqsmanager/faqsmanager.asp?question=acr-labview
You may also want to search the NI forums for Parker, I think there are other threads from the past.

PCMCIA card for motion control
Hi,
I am trying to control a stepper motor through LABVIEW. After perusing through the site, I know that I would need a stepper motor, a corresponding motion controller and a universal motion interface. The problem I have is that I am trying to control the stepper motor through a laptop (which does not have the Parallel Port slot). I am wondering if a PCMCIA card could work (by providing a parallel port to the laptop) or if it would not meet the necessary requirements to operate the motion control through the universal motion interface.
ThanksIt IS possible to drive an UMI interface with a parallel port providing TTL compatible outputs, basically the UMI interfaces are (advanced) break-out boxes feeding the step and direction pulses to a motor driver and connecting feedback signals (encoders, limit switches etc) back to the PC. But in this case, you would have to write your own routines for accelerating and slowing down, as well as evaluating the feedback signals from an encoder or limit switches. There are several manufactures making motor drivers which can be driven via a serial or USB interface, in case you cannot use a NI controller board it will be much easier to use such a setup since the motor drivers usually incorporate at least a basic motor controller providing a set of commands which makes it much easier to control a motor than with doing everything from scratch.

Where is the output for PWM on NI 7774 connected to motion control card 7356
Hi,
I have NI motion control card 7356 which interfaced through 7774 interface board. PWM outputs are written to be on pins 5 and 9 on Digital IO, yet there is no indication about the whereabouts of these PWMs on the interface board (7774). Would you please help???
Asst. Prof. Vasfi Emre Omurlu, Ph.D.Simitci,
For the digital I/Os a UMI-7774 provides access to 16 digital lines. If you want to access other signals of the digital connector, you shouldn't connect it to the UMI but to another breakout box like the SCB-68. Please note that compared to the UMI-7774 the SCB-68 doesn't provide optical isolation or 24 V connectivity. If this doesn't work for you, you could think of building a customized cable that connects the lines for the16 digital I/Os to the UMI and the rest of the signals to another connector or breakout box.
You also should be aware of the fact that the PWM outputs of 73xx boards are static. That means that you can change the duty cycle and output frequency of these signals in software only, which is quite slow. In most cases these PWM signals can't be used for motion control tasks.
What do you intend to do with the PWM signals?
Thanks and kind regards,

Homing switch causing motion control problems
I am controlling a dome for a telescope. I have a home position switch and motion control using one of NI's motion controllers. Everything works fine except for one bug. The dome just goes around and around. I can run a Home type reference search and it works fine. But if I command a position that runs through the home switch zone the dome stops moving. If I hit the command a second time it runs right to the correct position.
So why does the home switch stop the motion if I am not doing a reference search. Should I be using some other form of referencing?
Thanks,
Dave
David A. TaylorDo you have the home switch also configured as a limit switch?
What motion hardware are you using. In addition to home limits, the ni cards often have a + limit and - limit and also a software limit, these can be configured via the api or in max.

Hello all, I am completely new to motion control and my head is spinning with all the options so please bear with me, all help is much appreciated.
I am trying to build a control which will perform point to point movement of something like this:
http://www.haydonkerk.com/LinearActuatorProducts/StepperMotorLinearActuators/LinearActuatorsHybrid/S...
It will be moving to a specified point and then returning to the "home" position, holding and then repeating for a number of cycles. The timing of the movement needs to be pretty accurate, each movement cycle will last about 2 tenths of a second. There will be a few parameters that the user should be able to select before beginning the test.
I think I will need to execute this in real time and I am really hoping to do the programming in Labview for no other reason than I like it better than text based. So my question is really what hardware and software am I going to need to get this done? I went through the info on NI's website and due to my lack of background knowledge it was pretty confusing. It looks like as far as software goes it will basically be Real-Time module. For hardware it looks like a controller and a driver. If I had the PXI-7332 controller and the P70530 driver am I good to go? Or am I missing some critical aspect
Also, if any has any good recommendations for some reading on these sorts of things I would be interested in that as well.
Thanks.Hi Nick,
We've got two basic options for motion control- PC based, or RIO based. These types of questions are actually quite common for support, if you'd like to contact NI. If not, post back and I'd be happy to help.

What kind of equipment do i need for motion control
i'm new to computerized actuators, i need to control a stepper motor that can turn both directions and can be controlled by a 0-5 volt sensor. i need to be able to set the targeted volts and have it turn one direction if its reading over, and the other direction if its reading under. What should i buy.
Hey Jaspittman,
I would also recommend the following web site called Build Your Own Motion Control System which will walk you through the steps of what you will need to build your motion system. Also, I would suggest taking a look at the Motion Advisor page if you will be using any 3rd party hardware (i.e. motors, drives, stages) which can be found at the following link Advisors for Motion. These two sites have a lot of helpful information to get you started.

Configuring motion control axes
I am trying to run two axes independently with a PCI-7344 motion controller through a UMI-7764. I am running each axis in velocity mode.
I have tested both axes with the Constant_Velocity_Move[1].vi, one works smoothly and the other is erratic, with the motor speeding up to maximum, then stopping, and overall not following the input velocity. I have been through the Board Configuration file in MAX with a fine tooth comb - the configuration for both axes is identical, as are the PID parameters. It is not the motor hardware; I have checked the analogue output with a dvm and the readings reflect the motor response described above.
Any suggestion gratefully received. How have you got the encoders configured? If you perform the moves in MAX with the ineractive control do you get the same behaviour?

How to come true a constant temperature control through PCI 7344
I have one PCI-7344 to control three motors.I also need to come true a constant temperature control through 7344.
using "Analog Input"and "Analog Reference",is it possible to come true the control.
To come true it, what others I need?
Waiting for your answer!
Thanks
帖子被langtian在12-20-2005 08:58 PM时编辑过了Langtian,
In general the PID control loop of the 7344 can be used for a wide
variety of control applications. You can use the analog inputs to
acquire the feedback signals and the analog outputs to control e. g.
torque, flow rates and so on. For temperature control the board seems
to be a bit oversized as temperatures typically change very slowly
compared to the high control loop rates of the 7344 but this shouldn't
result in a problem.
Please note that the "Analog Reference" Output can't be used for
control tasks as this is a static analog output fixed to 7.5 V which
can't be changed.
For more information about how to use NI motion control boards with analog feedback please refer to this link and to this document.

Need an Instrument Drive for Elmo motion control products.
Hello,
I am going to use a Bassoon servo drive from Elmo Motion Control to control a voice coil. I haven't found an Instrument Driver for Elmo through my LavVIEW program or on their website. Does an Instrument Drive for Elmo products exist?
Thank You!Hello JMJ,
Here are my answers to your questions:
1. Is it possible for me to communicate with the Basic Serial Read
and Write example and not develop an Instrument Drive? I see that the
write VISA VI takes a string and converts it and sends it to the
control card and the read VI receives a signal and converts it. Is the
conversion converting from the Elmo language to the ASCII code? If I
don't write an Instrument Drive will I have limited capabilities? You could use the serial example to write your entire program. If you only need a handfull of commands, then this is probably the most straighforward for you to get going. Everytime you use the VISA Write, the ascii values are written on the serial lines and transmitted to your device. Your device reads and interprets these commands and acts depending on what the command is. Some command may change a setting in the instrument. Some other command may actually ask for the instrument to write back some data. In this case, you need to have a VISA Read after the write to be able to read the data into your computer.
2. I was informed that there is an Instrument I/O Wizard that would
potentially be easier to use and program than an Instrument
Drive. What is your opinion on such matter? Could I use either or
neither? You can definitely use the Instrument I/O Wizard to help you . This wizard really helps in parsing the data received from your instrument. You can look this tutorial if you want to learn more about it. You could use either one. I suggest you try both these methods and see which one seems more obvious to you.
3. If I develope an Instrument Drive are all the seperate commands seperate subVIs?
A LabVIEW instrument driver usually has a set of VIs with specific functionality. For example, you will have one subVI that will initializes the instrument. This subVI may send 1 to 5 (or more) commands, depending on what you need to initialize your instrument. You can then have one VI that set's an attritube. This one would only require sending one command. You can look at this tutorial for developping a complete instrument driver. However, keep in mind that this may not me necessary for your application.
I suggest you first look at what functionality you need. Then take a look at what commands this will require. You will then be able to plan out your program a little better. I also suggest you post all this information on the forum, so that we may be able to help you with more specific details.
Have a great day.

I'd like to identify a motion control board and get the according manual. There's no product number on the board, except the following numbers and names:
PCIstep
Assy: 184903C-03
184905B-01
The device is named
PCI-Step-40X MotionValue
in the measurement&automation explorer.
Could someone identify this board?
Thanks in advance,
simonSimon,
What exactly do you want to know about this board?
I know very little about this board.
What I can tell you is that it is a very old board which has been obsoleted and is no longer supported.
As a value motion board you may have some luck scavanging through the ftp site at ftp://ftp.ni.com/support/motion/Software/PC/ValueMotion/
You can find information on our current line of Motion product here.
Hope this helps at least a bit.

When connected to my new Ford Mondeo, my ipod nano can be controlled through user interface in car. This worksd most of the time, but after a while if I try to change the music or search, it comes up with message 'Loading Data'. I then have to pull out USB and reinseert, at which point it works again. Has anyone esle expereinced this/have a solution?
Does not matter if anyone else has this issue. You need to contact the Ford dealership. It's their product you are having problems with.
If you really want to know if anyone else has this issue, post on Ford's Mondeo message boards. It's where the Ford car owners hang out. -
How can I use flex motion control VI without hardware?
I would like to try and simulate the motion control of my system before i hook up the motion control card. But when I use the VI in flex motion contro took kit it asks for address or something and gives me an error. Can't I just simulate without hardware?
Hello,
The only way you can use FlexMotion without any hardware is to set it up as Open Loop Stepper Control. Otherwise, you will get errors when no encoder signal is fed back to the controller.
Please let me know if you have any further questions.

If this has been answered, or solution(s) offered, I'll be darned if I can find them, even an extensive search in the Forum and Community Database...
New Yoga 2 Pro for Christmas...so far, very nice machine. However, am a litlle (!) frustrated with the Lenovo Motion Control...
I can get the software to open, access settings, etc. but the tutorial doesn't tell me squat. Activating the software doesn't open my webcam...I tried with a couple of other programs, and when opening, they DO boot the webcam on. I can't find any step-by step instructions on the 'net...heck, the Dragon Assistant software tutorial is great and got that running fine.
It appears that this is a common issue, judging by the number of posts on Lenovo Community. I tried uninstalling the original software, then reloading. I tried downloading v2.0 (it came preloaded with v2.5.1.0225 to ses if that would work, as suggested in a posted fix.
So...no Lenovo support for Motion Control? No workarounds or fixes? Is this a glitch with Win 8.1 that has yet to be resolved? Inquiring minds would sure appreciate knowing! Thanks for any assistance in advance!I dont have my Y3P at the moment but I remember disabling it from Task Manager > Startup Programs
Find Motion Control in there and Disable it, then restart the system.
You should probably also disable Harmony, since that is the app which is responsible for these transitions and gets annoying for me.
