MOTION Trouble: Gravity Behavior

Hello, I've been trying to search this forum but I just didn't have any luck finding information about this dilemma I am currently having.
Essentially, I am trying to make several photos seem to be thrown onto a desk. However, my attempts are looking extremely amateur and unrealistic. I started to mess around with some behaviors.
Specifically, the gravity behavior seems like the right behavior I need to have the pictures look like they are dropping onto the desk. At the moment, any attempt I make at tweaking the settings on "Gravity," it keeps pushing my pictures through the desk layer. I cannot get it to stop right where I want it to.
Does anyone else experience this type of problem? If so, can anyone lend me a hand?
Much appreciation and thanks.

Ouch. The link advertises another website with a video tutorial that charges $15.99 to watch.
Anyone else having the same problem that can help me figure this out? I'm trying to do all the search I can but I just can't find any information because searching "gravity" is very broad and vague.
I tried applying "drag" to it, then I have this issue where the gravity motion slows down dramatically. There must be a simple way to do this in Motion... I'm new to it and am struggling to get around this problem.

  • Motion 2: Adding Behaviors...

I am not sure what I am doing wrong but I cannot get my clips to move about the screen. I have several small still images that I want to fly around the screen. Now I did get 1 of them to work. However, for the next layer, I wanted to add a RATE behavior to the clip at a precise point in the timeline. Well when I added the behavior, it does nothing at all. The clip sits still on the screen. I highlighted the layer and can add stuff like drop shadows, etc. but the thing will not move at all.
    What am I doing wrong?

The Rate behavior is a parameter behavior. This means that it doesn't do anything by itself until you tell it what parameter you want to change the Rate for (position, rotation, scale, opacity, etc. etc.). So you normally need to make sure the "Apply To" parameter is set to something like Position.
Moving objects around is quicker when you use the behaviors created just for this purpose. Look in the "Basic Motion" category, and apply either the "Throw" or the "Motion Path" behaviors to make your still images move around quickly.

  • Stop motion troubles

I just finished work on a stop motion video involving a crew of LEGO characters fighting to the death.  However, when I go to the begining in the timeline and try to watch it the whole way through, it messes up.  The video will play for a while, then it will freeze on an image while the playhead keeps going.  It's like my computer is freezing up on me, but I know that this is not the case.  Is it a problem with the actual footage, or is it just the program's fault?  Is there a way to smooth things over so I can view what I have created so far?

Oddly enough, all of the problems were mostly fixed as soon as I posted this question...
Also, I was unware that I had to render the footage, and things seemed to run smoother when I finally did.  Thanks for your effort though.

  • DW CS5 TROUBLE WITH BEHAVIORS

Making a couple photo albums-want fade in on load.
I chose my image>new behavior >effects>fade> set up parameters using current selection> set to "onLoad"
DW puts this script in my head:
    <script src="../SpryAssets/SpryEffects.js" type="text/javascript"></script>
    <script type="text/javascript">
function MM_effectAppearFade(targetElement, duration, from, to, toggle)
    Spry.Effect.DoFade(targetElement, {duration: duration, from: from, to: to, toggle: toggle});
    </script>
I tried to just copy the script to other images, but they don't work. So, I went through every pic in the album and did it manually.
In the second album I did each image by hand again, using the behaviors tag pane. This time each image loads like normal and then fades out and fades in. I have gone back through and deleted behavior for each image and re-input for each image usign the behaviors tag pane. I went through to see if there were behaviors assinged to other parts of the page...none. Re-uploaded and I still get 2 behaviors for each image. I evn deleted the files from the server and reloaded.
Why can't I cut and past scripting code? When I do each picture it writes the very same code I tried to paste.
Why am I getting two behaviors?
    Help! [email protected]

As stated, I removed the code and put it back in with the behavior pane. I tripled-checked. All the code from opening script tags to closing script tags was placed inside of the head tag, in exactly the same place as the original code. I put the two windows beside each other and went over it, character by character. I even printed the codes and laid the papers on top of each other...not a single space or . out of place.
After I replaced the code I checked it against the print of the pasted code and still they were exactly the same and in exactly the same place.
Update: The pages shoiwing double behaviors: I removed the scripting from the head and they work just like they did originally. I re-did the image on one by adding a behavior, uploaded and still have 2 behaviors happening.
I am not completely sure how the automatic scripting works. I notice that there is a scripting folder with a file in it. Is it possible that DW puts the actual code in that doc and the <script></script> in of in the head of the page is just a link? Even though I have removed the code from the page...manually in code view and by clicking on the image and deleting from the behaviors tag pane.....that the code still exists in the script folder file and there is conflict?

  • Motion troubles

This is what I posted to the Motion forum three days ago. I not getting very much help here. I checked again this am and still no helpful response. Can anyone help me here?
The DC lines are my own. The ones with an 'A' are the responses.
DC- I am new to Motion 1 and have just installed it on my G4.
Every time I try to export to QT mov I get an error message. No reason, just an error message.
I have my settings set for my codec and I have matched them to my FCP sequence settings.
I tried the search in the motion forum. No results to my problem.
    Any clues.

    A-Heya,
One thing that causes that less-than-informative error is if you're trying to overwrite a file that is in use. Are you rendering over an already-existing Quicktime movie?
DC-No, I'm exporting to a new folder on one of my media drives.
A-Any funny characters in your export name? "/" is particularly bad...
DC-Nothing unusual in the text. It's a logo page with helvitica font, white over a photograph. Three separate text sections.

  • Photoshop to Motion Troubles

I am trying to import a Photoshop image that is a logo of a company. It is in black with white lettering. The background is transparent so I can import with our having a white background put on it, but that is my problem. I have tried countless ways to save in Photoshop and import in Motion keeping the transparent background but for some reason it still puts the image on top of a white background. Is there a way to fix this?

when bringing the psd file onto the canvas area dont let go straight away - wait for the "pop up" option to bring the layers from the psd in seperately - hopefully this will stop the white background problem for you.

  • Image Editing (3D and Motion) Trouble

I'm working on a sketch where a coat chases my little brother and I, and I'm trying to rotate the picture, imported from a .psd file with three layers (the body of the coat and the ends of the two sleeves). of my coat on with the Basic 3D filter. In one portion of the sketch, it works exactly how I want it to (paused and playing looking the same), but then I put in a new clip, and it screws up. I set it to rotate on the Y-axis negative 50º and move it to the right side of the screen, but what appears when I hit play and when it's still are different. The coat will move more towards the middle of the screen and it rotates differently when I hit play. What can I do to fix this, and why is it happening?

Nobody knows how to do this? Trying to get our 3D files embedded in the pdf. Cant figure out how to have the 3rd party viewer right in the PDF for mark up.

  • ... jerky unresponsive behavior with MOTION 3...

...other than reinstalling(ouch!) is there anything else after trashing preferences that might correct this problem? I've been experiencing this problem lately with the playback refusing to stop and jerky stuttering and jumping frames during playback with animations that aren't all that complex. Maybe object caches, files somewhere? thanks

There are just too many issues that contribute to Motion's terrible behavior, including, I do not hesitate to add, Apple's hyperbole. Motion wants to recalculate everything all the time in an effort to give you (the unubtainable illusion of) realtime interaction. So, if you make a tiny change that has recursive impacts, Motion will attempt to redraw from frame 01 and fill up the RAM with the newly calculated frames. This can take a l-o-n-g time depending on your preview and display settings and how much GPU power/VRAM you have onboard.
Restarting the application or restarting your Macintosh should purge all caches. Reinstalling Motion will solve nothing.
Look in the manual for "purge."
You might try pre-rendering layers that will not change, such as chromakey foregrounds, and disabling some filters or effects like drop shadows that you may not need to edit your gross movements and timing. Reactivate them when you're ready to get serious about the final look.
Sorry not to be able to point you to an immediate solution. We all have widely disparate GPUs and CPUs.

  • M-Audio Keystation 49e - USB Midi Keyboard  and  Motion Midi behavior

  • Motion Path Madness

More specifically, the start and end points of the motion path. They are driving me crazy. Maybe I am overlooking something that is so ridiculously basic I am not finding it, but here's my issue. I've got a motion path on an object. The start point has a position of X: -77, Y: 16. I'd like the end point to be X: - 77, Y: 50, but everytime I try to move the end point, it ends up moving the X axis to something ridiculous like -77.78, clearly and visibly making my path something other than a straight line. Is there a way to get around this? I experience this issue quite a bit and have been unable to successfully find an answer. Perhaps I am just not using the right search terms? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Hey Q*bert,
Thanks for the tip. I've also found that if you hold the Option key while dragging a point it seems to keep the coordinates at whole numbers. I was getting my problem with the snapping turned on as well, though I wasn't always at the beginning of the timeline when attempting a move.
I haven't been using keyframes just because I haven't really thought about it since getting Motion. The behaviors are just so much nicer to work with and the ability to scale and move them without worrying about the keyframe position is nice.

  • Behaviors disappeared from the Inspector

Motion 4 on a MacBookPro 2.66. Working a little more than an hour on titles. Set up four different Groups, each with 4 to 5 TEXT boxes each. Went back through to Animate the text, got the first box selected, go to the Library in the Inspector and I have (0) Behaviors. 5 mins earlier I had 230. Some folders show up partially filled, some are fine, some are as empty as Behaviors. Under the Behaviors Icon above the Canvas I have all the Behaviors but being kind of new to Motion I would like to see an example in the Inspector- beside they're supposed to be in the Inspector.
Saved, Quit. Ran DIsk Utility and Repaired a page full of stuff, all in the Systems Library- Motion was the only thing I ran this morning, reopened Motion and the Behaviors where back in the Inspector.
Didn't loose anything but it's still a little concerning.
Had Motion running by it self because I can't seem to get the hang of swapping clips or Sequences back and forth between FCP successfully- not what this post is about, I'll get that figured out but am I doing something wrong to loose the Behaviors?
I had 2 Backgrounds with Blurs on, not on top of each other, and the rest was just Text. One Text box had one word that was Live Fonts but the rest was just text I intend to Animate with Behaviors.
Is this just the way it is with laptops?
Got 500 Gigs in the MacBook, all of Motion is in it. I keep the Transferred or Captured source material for FCP on external disks but since I'm really learning Motion it's nice to have it all with me.
Anybody have any ideas why folders would disappear from the Inspector?

    None.
    Good news: it's not typical.

  • Motion Assistant

    Hi,
What is the defined behavior for Motion Assistant API contour mode
(NIMASetMoveParams) when it receives duplicated XY points?
For example, if I pass coordinates that define a square
    0,0
    10,0
    10,10
    0,10
    0,0
this isn’t result in square because of the cubic spline. To force a discontinuity
(C2 and C1) I can replicate two times each point.  For example:
    0,0
    10,0
    10,0
    10,0
    10,10
    10,10
    10,10
This is valid in spline theory. What the API will do in this case?
    Thanks.

    Hi David,
I tried to feed Motion Assistant with replicated data. Neither Motion Assistant
application nor the API generates any kind of error. Based on the resulting
shape (not a square, but something that resembles a drop) I think that the
    redundant data is being ignored.
    You said
that after the acceleration, M.A. will keep the velocity constant. This is not
always the case as I discussed in e-mail support “(Reference#7107453) Motion
Assistant contouring behavior”. There are situations that the algorithm of the
contour mode (or smart contouring feature) implemented in M.A. changes the
    velocity during the motion.
    Another different
behavior is the M.A contour mode and the contour mode implemented in the PCI
7344 is that the board doesn’t ignore redundant data as is stated by S. Arves
    S. in my post http://forums.ni.com/ni/board/message?board.id=240&message.id=3443#M3443
    It will be
very helpful a detailed specification about the rules for the smart contouring implemented
in M.A. and the contoured mode implemented in PCI 7344. I’m sure that this will
help everyone do a better use of these products.
    Thanks.

  • Motion Tracking - Match Move, getting messy edges around superimposed video

    (Motion 3.0.2)
I'm using the "Match Motion" menu option under "Motion Tracking" - "Add Behavior" to superimpose a video over a flat screen in the shot. This is working great except for one issue. Around the edges of the super imposed video there is a flickering light that persists. NOTE: The flat screen does display a basic white graphic on it and initially it seemed as though this was leaking through. However, I'm not convinced this is the case as I've stretched the four corners well beyond the underlying white screen and the problem persists.
Pretty sure I went through the proper steps, i.e analyze etc. and the superimposed video does play fine, just the edges are not very clean.
    Any feedback would be appreciated.

Thanks, I did set the "Render" to "Best", hit Analyze again, saved the file, went back to my FCP project which contained the file/clip, had to render again.....but got the same results, might be a touch improved, can't really tell. Maybe I'll start over and just cover the entire flat screen tv w/ the video to ensure that none of the white image from the tv seeps around the edges??

  • What is the correct way to add behaviors to text?

I seem to be having trouble adding behaviors properly.
What I'd like to do is select a few words of text and apply a behavior to them, in particular the behavior Open Browser Window when a user clicks on the selected text. I've gotten this work in what I'm sure is not the correct way. The only way I can get it to work is if the text link also has an a href link set up (through the Properties Inspector) pointing back to this same page. Now if I simply select some text and go to add a behavior to it through the tag inspector panel a lot of my choices are greyed out. I'm not super code-savy but do I understand that these behaviors should / can only be applied to tags?
You can see samples of what I'm talking about here: http://www.philasecurities.com/luncheon_meetings.html. In the luncheon schedule, click on the "more…" links and a new, small browser window should open.
How should I be applying these correctly?
    Thanks,
    John

Pop-up Window in Dreamweaver (Behaviors Panel)
    1.  Insert an image or type some text.
    2.  Select it and go to the Properties Panel link field.  Browse for the file or type the full URL (http://example.com).
    3.  Go to the Behaviors Panel and hit the plus sign to add a new behavior.
    4.  Select Open Browser Window.
    5.  Browse to file or type the URL (Yes, a 2nd time).
    6.  Set the height, width and other optional attributes for your pop-up window. (See link below for details)
    http://help.adobe.com/en_US/dreamweaver/cs/using/WSc78c5058ca073340dcda9110b1f693f21-7b07a .html
    7.  Hit OK.
    8.  Verify that the behavior's trigger event is onClick.  If it's not, click the event box to show other trigger options.
    9.  IMPORTANT!  Go back to the Properties Panel and replace the first URL in the link field with javascript:() which makes the primary link into a null link.  If you don't do this, the link will open twice: once in the pop-up window and again in the parent window.
Save your page and preview in browsers.
PS. It takes longer to explain all these steps than it does to do it.

  • Easing Behaviors

I'm looking at the spin behavior right now and I want to stop the rotation at a certain point. If you just trim the out point of the behavior it stops but it has a constant rate up to the out point. Is there a way to ease into this stop point while still using the behavior? I can convert to keyframes then set the last keyframe to ease in but can I do it with the behavior.
    TonyTony

[That did have some nice floating qualities to it but not really enough control.]
Try increasing the Amount in the Inspector more than the defaults. That should make it stop pretty quickly after the behavior starts. You'll have to trim the beginning of the behavior to when you want it to start slowing down.
If there's even more specific control you need, use keyframes for this. Either add them directly or convert the behaviors to keyframes and adjust accordingly.
[So am I right in assuming there is no easing of behaviors?]
Not really - there's no single rule like that to describe every single behavior in Motion. Depends on what the behavior does. Some have ease controls, some don't need them since the behavior has inherent ease, and some don't. For others you can use drag or rotational drag behaviors to control how the animation happens.
In any case, if you want something to rotate and slow down in a very specific way, there's no rule against using keyframes. Motion has both behaviors and keyframes when one is better than the other and vice-versa.
