Easing Behaviors

I'm looking at the spin behavior right now and I want to stop the rotation at a certain point. If you just trim the out point of the behavior it stops but it has a constant rate up to the out point. Is there a way to ease into this stop point while still using the behavior? I can convert to keyframes then set the last keyframe to ease in but can I do it with the behavior.
TonyTony

[That did have some nice floating qualities to it but not really enough control.]
Try increasing the Amount in the Inspector more than the defaults. That should make it stop pretty quickly after the behavior starts. You'll have to trim the beginning of the behavior to when you want it to start slowing down.
If there's even more specific control you need, use keyframes for this. Either add them directly or convert the behaviors to keyframes and adjust accordingly.
[So am I right in assuming there is no easing of behaviors?]
Not really - there's no single rule like that to describe every single behavior in Motion. Depends on what the behavior does. Some have ease controls, some don't need them since the behavior has inherent ease, and some don't. For others you can use drag or rotational drag behaviors to control how the animation happens.
In any case, if you want something to rotate and slow down in a very specific way, there's no rule against using keyframes. Motion has both behaviors and keyframes when one is better than the other and vice-versa.

  • Making keyframing as smooth as behaviors (ease in AND out)...

I try time and time again to get keyframes to be as smooth as behaviors with "ease in and out." No matter how I do it, bezier, ease in, ease out... the keyframes always jerk in one direction or another. Is there a way to have keyframes exhibit this "ease in and out" behavior? When selecting the keyframes in keyframe editor, it only offers an ease IN or and ease OUT.

I'm more focused on camera-moves (no pun intended). Dolly, sweep, these all have "ease both" options which feel VERY organic. Without them I think 3d comes off as "digital," so I prefer to always use ease-both.
When I start key-framing for major complex moves, I have to bezier the **** out of X,Y AND Z moves. It gets really overwhelming. I just would like the option to select all and choose -ease-both-, rather than have to set each one.

  • Easing applied to list causes puzzling behavior

Maybe easing shouldn't be applied to a list component, but I'll explain what I'm encountering.
I have a list that slides into view (using clip to component bounds), with an action that should cause it to slide out of view upon selection of any item.
But, if easing is applied to State 2 to State 1, and I select an item, something impedes this action, causing it to behave unpredictably.
My list is contained within a custom/generic component. Clicking on the component makes the list appear. If no easing is applied to the "selected" state, it works fine. Not elegant, but okay.
    Thanks
    Kristin
I guess, to be more precise, the issue is with including a 'move' action to the transitions between states.

Okay, I seem to have solved my problem.
Since my list contains 2 elements, the list and the graphical background, I removed the 'move' action from the list portion and kept the move on the graphical portion.
This causes my list to slide out of view as desired.

  • Palm says Domino servers not supported (??????) - webOS 2.1.0 IMAP or EAS Sync do not work

So I've been struggling to get my work email up and running on a new Pre2. All my accounts except my work account sync without any issue. At work we use a Domino 8.5.2 server with Domino Traveler. Users not using the corporate BB's have the option to sync their mail using IMAP or EAS (on Traveler) on the server. Both of these work flawlessly on my Pre (minus) 1.4.5 (which I am still using) and neither works on the Pre2 2.1.0.
I have been all over the internet, logged a complaint with Palm. Had the problem escalated to Level 3.  HP-Palm has no tech support for WebOs devices in Asia (where I am presently based) and they told me US based level 3 tech support cannot make overseas calls. Tried calling the US tech support myself but it took 30min to get the guy to understand the problem as I had to start from scratch even after giving my complaint ref number. After that no news from them. No call back no email - nothing. Finally wrote an email on their website complaining to HP's CEO. The very next day some guy from tech support in Asia called me and giving reference of my email to Mr.Apotheker told me that he would co-ordinate with the engineers in USa and call me each day to update me on the status of my complaint.
After 3 calls from the guy during with some more questions answered he finally called me this morning to convey the following to me.
"The complaint lodged by you has been checked, duplicated at our end and confirmed. However, IMAP email on a Domino server or Domino Traveler EAS synchronization is not supported by webOS 2 so we cannot help me any further. Have a nice day!"
Wow, I could not believe that this guy was actually serious about this statement. HP-Palm are actually publicly stating that a webOS 2 device syncing with a Domino server is not officially supported. That in my opinion is unbelievable. They cannot possibly have any hopes of being a serious player in the enterprise environment with this level (or lack thereof) of email sync support on the device.
To anyone who can still help me trouble shoot I have already tried the following:
    - deleted & setup problem account again
    - partial erase
    - full erase
    - full secure erase with a completely new palm profile
    - on server side completely new mail db setup on server
    - trying to click forward and back between email messages
    - setting up a test account for the palm guys to try to log into and confirm duplication of this issue at their end
Nothing works. The final result is:
IMAP: it is absolutely impossible to get the IMAP Sync to show folders from our sever. The account gets set up and validates without any problem. But no folders show up on the device. If you click on drafting a new email message and send out a message it may or may not go (random behavior). It shows up in the Outbox on the device and in case it is successfully transmitted it just disappears from device (no sent folder). On the desktop client the sent email appears in the sent folder.
Conclusion: SMTP relay works at times. IMAP sync for incoming connects but no folders show up on device.
EAS Sync with Domino Traveler: After trying dozens of different configurations the email starts to sync and all the folders show up. all email headers show up just fine. But whenever I try to open an email it needs anywhere from a couple of seconds to 30-40 seconds while I watch the "retrieving email text" then if I am lucky the email opens with full text but there are a number of email messages which never open and eventually give me an "error - unable to download".
Conclusion: The email sync with Traveler is completely random. I can read some messages but most show me an error. The contacts search from Global address book on the server works albeit with a 5-10 second delay.
HP-Palm have given me a reference bug number CSO-7675 and as I understood officially told me that they cannot offer any further help. I don't know if this issue will be addressed in subsequent updates or I'm on my own. If anyone can offer any further help on this issue it would be much appreciated.
Post relates to: Pre 2 p102ueu (SFR)

I have tried much of what you have and have the same basic problem. Email sync to Traveler 8.5.2FP2 is erratic at best. Another symptom I see is if sometimes when I open an email from the Inbox, I get the body of a different email! So something is definitely broken. Question is, is it Traveler or WebOS? It seems that WebOS 2.x uses a later version of Active Sync as I can see messages on the Domino console referring to XML tags that are not understood and other error messages. I'm pretty sure Traveler only supports what is needed for the iPhone to sync. It is very annoying and pretty much makes email / celndaring unusable. The calendar on my Pre seems to take a long time to respond after opening and I'm pretty sure it's due to the above issues. I have tried the commonTime mNotes product and that works fine but I would prefer to use Traveler as it is a more elegant solution.

  • How Can You Disable Ease-In and Ease-Out Of Ken Burns

It seems that along with everything else that has changed with iMovie version 10, when you add photos to the timeline it automatically places an ease-in and ease-out to the Ken Burns move.  For those of you who have been on a Mac for a while, this was how iMovie behaved in version 6 and earlier, and it feels rather dated.
If you are putting together a video slide show with multiple photos back to back, having the zoom ease in and out for every image is incredibly obnoxious.  I can see situations when you are providing a narrative that it might be important, but often photos are just being animated to music.  Is there a way to disable the easing or am I just best keeping to iMovie 9.0.9?
    Thanks!

    Hi Douglas,
Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
It does look like this is the default behavior for imported pictures in iMovie 10, and can't be disabled from the iMovie preferences. The best workaround is to select all of the pictures in your timeline and turn off the Ken Burns effect using the Adjust menu.
    iMovie Help
    http://help.apple.com/imovie/mac/10.0/#mov26d3f6a6c
Modify a crop, rotation, or Ken Burns effect
In the timeline, select the photos you want to modify or restore to their original state.
Click the Adjust button in the toolbar.
The adjustments bar appears above the clip in the viewer.
To show the cropping controls, click the Cropping button.
In the cropping controls, change Style from Ken Burns to Fit to display the pictures in their original size. From there, you can crop them individually as needed.
    Best,
    Jeremy

  • Missing ease-of-use features

Has anyone else noticed some obvious missing UI items in iMovie 08? I just imported 28 DV-25 tapes of data and am shocked and chagrined at the lack of fit and finish to iMovie 08. No, I don't really miss the timeline and the "newer" way of trimming clips mode is pretty cool, but....
    a) Why aren't there the same Event sorting options and other Event handling in iMovie 08 as there are in iPhoto? Consistency would be good. Why can't I sort events by name for instance?
    b) Why can't I change the order of Projects to at least sort in ascending or descending order? And, which order will my projects appear in at gallery.mac.com? I really want them "most recent first," but the chances of that are <= 1 on 3, I suspect.
    c) Why can't I add comments to events and projects? Or, change the date of clips from within iMovie 08? I spent mega amounts of time changing the dates on many clips so that they appeared correctly in the Event Clip viewer and sorted properly in the Event Pane. How about manual manipulation?
    d) Why can't I select multiple projects to publish to .Mac serially, so that I can go to bed :)?
    e) Why can't I change the width of the Project and Events panes? I have long Event and Project names that I can't see in their respective browser panes.
    f) Why must I start to do an export to .Mac just so that I can select which sizes to export and add comments?
    g) "Import media files..." has a really bad behavior in which multiple files with names of the format <mm.dd event N.dv> actually generate the same thumbnails file when "mm" is the same. I imported four files with names {09.18 Event 1.dv, 09.18 Event 2.dv, 09.18 Event 3.dv, and 09.18 Event4. dv} which caused only one thumbnail file to be generated, named "09," used by each of the four clips. It looked really funky in Event browser - the media was right but the thumbnails were all the thumbnails of the last clip.
    h) While creating titles, i noticed that sometimes the color of the title text displays white, but then renders black. Or even better, it will display white but when selected, turns to black. Very confusing.
    i) And, how do I set the poster frame on a project that I publish to .mac
    j) And don't even get me started on Chapter markers. Remember, too, that chapter markers are useful for web publishing, since large movies can still take some time to download.
    k) Why doesn't "Import from iMovie HD..." allow to "move" or "copy" the media? I would have loved to have not had to copy the several hundred GB of video around on my system.
You might say "Use Final Cut Express," or "Use Final Cut Pro," but I purchased iMovie 08 to do just the simple stuff. items (a) through (k) aren't really "advanced editing" now, are they?
Is that enough? I feel better now, anyway .
    -- Phil

iMovie 08 is NOT an upgrade of iMovie 06. It is a completely new application. iMovie 08 is better for absolute beginners that don't want to burn a DVD. Most others will like iMovie 06 for its far greater editing power and ease of making DVDs. (Like creating Chapter Markers and Share to iDVD.)
Most owners of iLife 08 I know use iMovie 06.
iMovie 08 is a wonderful program assuming that you're using it for what it was designed to do, assemble simple videos to share on the Internet.
Remember that Apple includes iMovie 06 as a free download to iLife 08 owners. (THEY WANT YOU TO HAVE IT!)

Much has been written about the differences between iMovie 06 and iMovie 08. I have found the below link to be helpful.

  • Ease in/ease out motion panning keyframes

this seems to be very difficult to accomplish. does anyone have a method to do this sucessfully
take photo and pan it from left to right, or up and down, it starts at slow and smooth gets moving (not too fast) and slows down to a beautiful stop at end. i understand you make the move with keyframes and then go to your canvas window and ctrl click to choose "ease in/ease out" - now i would think it would just make a bezier automation like it does with "smooth" for scaling, but it doesnt, it makes the picture bounce or it makes it speed up crazy and stop ubruptly, then i notice you have to grab this second green dot to adjust the velocity but even that doesnt work smoothly either, has anyone mastered this?
    fcp5
    thanks
    adam

    Adam,
The best way I've found to work with the Bezier keyframes is to temporarily enlarge the Canvas window in order to see what I'm doing (100% to 200%). With the Canvas window in Image+Wireframe mode, once you've set the Center keyframes you should see the green motion path. When you add the "ease In/Ease Out" you should see the purple Bezier handles overlayed on the green motion path. Notice the two larger purple dots on each Bezier handle; changing the position of the larger purple dots will change the behavior of the easing move.
It will take a little practice and experimentation, but you should be able to learn the relationships between the dot positioning and motion behavior fairly quickly.

  • "ease in - ease out" in new FCP 7??

I heard that the new FCP 7 allows us to get REAL ease-in\ease-out when creating moves on stills. I just made a couple of quick tests ... and I'm not noticing any great change in the subtlety of easing, or lack thereof, from previous versions of FCP. I'm working on a film with hundreds of stills, requiring endless camera\animation moves. I've been sending the sequences to Motion to get decent easing in and out; I was hoping the new FCP would make this unnecessary (based on the rumors I've heard).
Or perhaps it requires a different process when adding the ease-in\ease-out to the moves?
    Ben

    Hi -
I agree with David's post that it would probably be preferable to work in Motion or AE (or my favorite, Boris Red) - not only for the ease of creating the motion effects, but for what seems to be the better physical dynamics that those applications seem to have.
But . . . if you have to work in FCP, a couple of tricks I have learned in FCP when apply spline motion is:
    1) Bracket the motion keyframes by putting a non-splined keyframe with the same position settings one frame before the real starting keyframe and one frame after the real ending keyframe. This helps prevent some of the "erratic" behavior.
    2) To better see the mauve points, I enlarge the canvas to 400% or 800% and set the canvas view to wireframe only. I have a window arrangement saved that lets me quickly get the screen set up to make these adjustments.
But, as David and you point out, clearly the best way is to switch to Motion, AE or Boris Red.
    Good luck!

  • Ease-in ease-out weirdness in motion tab FCP

I've been doing a lot of animating stills in FCP by keyframing SCALE and CENTRE in the MOTION TAB of the VIEWER. I discovered the EASE-IN and EASE-OUT options by control-clicking the end key frames, but when I play back the animated clip, it does these weird lateral curve motions despite my only animating the still in a straight line. How do you ease-in a still and ease-out without this weird motion action occurring? Anyone sorted that? Do I have to use *After Effects* or Motion, or can it be done well in FCP ?

Try moving the image with Anchor Point instead. Some time ago, Tom Wolsky posted the following reply to a thread that is long-gone:
+Let's say you're zooming into a picture. You're starting say a scale of 20% centered on the screen and you going to scale up to 100%, and as you zoom in (scale) you want to move to the upper right corner of the image. Scaling takes place around the anchor point. The anchor point is normally the center of the image. As you move toward the upper right you're actually scaling around a point that's moving farther and farther away from where you're going. This causes overshoot, especially if the scale and center values are eased. (Scaling is not exponential anyway so this exacerbates the problem.) If you animate the anchor point to move opposite the center point, the scaling will continue to happen around the anchor point, which is now moving with you toward where you're going. It'll give you a bit better motion, but you still have to give yourself a little wiggle room.+
+Let me give you some numbers. I'm starting with an image that's 3600x2670. At it's start the image is centered and scaled to 24%. I can't go all the way to 20% because I'll get overshoot on the start when I put on easing because scale is logarithmic, while center is arithmetic. At the end of the motion the image is scaled to 100. It's center is now -1335, 932. (Again because of overshoot I can't go much closer to the edge.) Easing is set for center and scale, and as I'm sure you've seen you get the image sliding off the screen even with leaving the slack that I did. Now add the anchor point animation. Set the start keyframe at 0,0 the same as the center point. Set the end keyframe to 1335, -932, the opposite of the center keyframe and you'll get a motion that stays in the screen. If you could set easing for the anchor point it would be even smoother, but that's not practical in the FCP interface. You get a little snaking effect at the end. All in all pretty inadequate for good motion control.+
+I tried it Motion as well. The first problem is the application can't handle the image at full resolution. It could do the movement with scale animation and a motion path behavior. It was kind of adequate, but easing on the scaling was pretty poor and didn't achieve good results.+
+A major issue in both applications is the the scaling starts quickly and gets slower and slower. This is because of the lack of exponential scaling, and until this is addressed neither application will be more than barely adequate at best when it comes to large scale motion control. Basically neither of them are acceptable for professional work on large format, large scale images. I won't even go into how totally inadequate FCP is for easing stop and go motion.+

  • Keyframing - making it act like "ease both"

I've always been stumped by the following issue, and once again I'm trying to understand how to achieve specific fluid movements with keyframes. I've gotten into a project where simple sweeps or dollies aren't cutting it.
The thing I love about behaviors is how I can select "ease both" to do some very pretty movements. I can NEVER get this to work with keyframing.
So, say I want to move a camera. Maybe change it's rotation a little too.
I can get the keyframes in the timeline, no prob. Usually it's set to linear or some interpolation I don't want. I want to have the first set of keyframes ease into the movement, and I want the last set of keyframes to ease out right? Or do I want to ease OUT of the first keyframe and ease IN to the final keyframe. I think the terminology is tricky here.
"continuous" interpolation seems to achieve what I want, but as soon as I add keyframes later in the timeline it extrapolates movement that I simply dont.
Can someone help me understand how I keyframe to get the same behavior as "ease both?"

Try this. Apply continuous interpolation to your keyframes. Open the keyframe editor. Find the two sets of keyframes that have the same value (ie: your pause).
Lasso the 2nd set and right-click a keyframe choosing Linear from the interpolation menu. This will change that keyframe set to linear as well as any keyframes after. Select all keyframes after, right-click and choose: continuous.
Now you'll have continous keyframes up to the pause. It'll then change to linear for the pause, and go back to continuous after.
If you examine the 1st set going into the pause, you'll see that two interpolations are applied. Continuous going into the keyframe and linear leaving. Same with the 2nd set. It'll be linear going in and continuous going out.
I know it sounds confusing, but hopefully that helps you understand a bit how the interpolation works in Motion. Think of interpolation as not a factor of the keyframe, but rather a factor of the animation line on either side of the keyframe. The line on one side of a keyframe can be one interpolation, and the line on the other can be a different interpolation.
    Andy
PS: BTW, you may find that you need to change the 1st set of keyframes heading into the pause to Bezier instead of Continuous. Then you can manually adjust the ease in speed to the pause to make it smoother.

  • Speed ease in

Hi all - I have a 30 fps clip that I have sent to motion and I want to start the speed off at 50% and then ease it up very quickly to 100%. I know how to key frame this in FCP, but I've always found it sort of rudimentary. Is there a behavior in Motion 3 that allows this kind of manipulation (speed up or slow down a clip at various points...)?
    Thanks -

Yes, it's called the Set Speed behavior, in the Retiming category.

  • Modifying Properties for Ease-In Effects

I want to modify the ease for an object in my project. I see no difference in behavior when I change the value in the Ease field within the effect's properties. I'm not sure what this value is supposed to represent, but I assume a drastic change in value would do something. Does anyone know how to shorten the length of the ease? My object is going too far to the right and I want to stop it at a certain point. I'm using v8. LilybiriAdobe Captivate@

    Hi Manoj,
Thanx for the answer, I didn´t think of that, how can I put the properties in the KM and retrieve it from my JSP? sounds like a good idea!

  • Eleastic Easing Motion Path ?

Can anyone point me out how to set an Elastic or Bouncing movement to a motion Path? The only options I see are basic Ease In and Out . I would also like to have Ease In AND Out on the same movement.   THanks in advance.

It's quite easy.  I have a tutorial on how to do this at Filmmakingwebinars.com, in the 5-Step Tutorial section.  More info than I'm willing to type here in a forum.  But it's based on the ocillate parameter behavior, and some tricks it can do.

  • Behaviors and CSS misbehaving on library items

I've created a site that uses behaviors to create a NAV with
Pop-up menus. There are several categories and each category has
several products in it. The Categories and the products change so I
wanted to create a LIBRARY item out of the NAVmenu. The problem is
when the Library Item NAVmenu is created all the Pop-up behaviors
disappear. This would mean I have to re-input the Pop-ups a zillion
times. Also the CSS screws up. Any Ideas?

This is the code from a Library item?
Try this - create a new page, and drop an image on the page.
    With the image
selected, use MODIFY | Library > Add Object to Library.
    Name the Library
item you have just created, and then open it in DW. Look at
    the code. You
    should see -
    1. No doctype
    2. No <html>, <head>, </head>,
    <body>, </body>, or </html> tag
    3. Probably all you will see is something like this -
    <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html;
    charset=iso-8859-1">
    <img src="..." width="..." height="...">
That says it all. The Library item is a simple code fragment
    that will be
    inserted within another page's code.
Now - if you are determined to stick with the FW pop-up
    menus, you will
have to do some work to make a Library item. You will have to
    externalize
the javsacript for the menus, and link to that external js
    file in each page
of your site. Then you will have to remake your Library item
    so that it
only contains the triggering images for the menu. It can be
    done - see here
where I have done it -
    http://www.great-web-sights.com/library4d.html
You will see several things as you look at that page. The
    first is that
large chunk of javascript in the scrollable text area above
    the menu -
that's the code that is written dynamically to each page as
    it loads, and
it's one of the reasons why pages with these menus are
    usually sluggish.
Also, if you look at the code on the page, you will see where
    the library
item begins and ends. That's all of the code you should see
    in the *.lbi
file. Finally, you will see how I have linked to the external
    javascript
    files to make this work.
Here's the tragedy here - you used these pop-ups because you
    didn't know how
to do them yourself. Now look at the mess you are in....

  • Set Speed behavior question

I don't gedit... I've applied 2 Set Speed Behaviours of 50% to a clip: the 1st one to the first 18 frames and the 2nd one to the last 15 frames. The clip's original duration of 00:00:05:21 is unchanged after applying the set speed behaviours. I was expecting that the duration would increase by 33 frames (18 + 15). I have not used ease in or ease out (they are set to 0). I have not blended the frames or used Optical Flow. When I scrub through the clip frame by frame, I can see that Set Speed has duplicated each frame, which is what I expected. But if it's doubled the frames and not increased the overall duration, surely something must have been dropped? The clip ends at the same place.
The clip's original frame rate is 25fps and the format is HD Blackmagic 10 Bit, 1920 x 1080, progressive
Can anyone explain why there is no frame rate change please. I've spent a couple of days searching to try to find a discussion on the Set Speed behavior in Motion 3 but haven't found anything that goes into the frame rate implications.

Good question as I originally imported the clip as project to ensure I had the right settings. This did create a project duration of 00:00:05:21, so I changed it in the Project Properties dialogue to 00:00:10:00. I then applied the 2 Set Speed behaviours and RAM previewed all. After frame 00:00:05:21 the remaining frames are black - ie the clip still ends at 00:00:05:21 even though the project's duration is 00:00:10:00.
