MOUNT USB STORAGE FOR VM BACKUP

Hi, I just tried to mount USB Storage to my host with linux version.
I detect it with fdisk -l and esxcli storage core device list | grep -i usb, after stopping usbarbitrator
Result:
/dev/disks #dmesg
ScsiDevice: 3385: Successfully registered device "mpx.vmhba50:C0:T0:L0" from plugin "NMP" of type 0
/dev/disks # esxcli storage core device list | grep -i usb
Display Name: Local USB Direct-Access (mpx.vmhba32:C0:T0:L0)
Display Name: Local USB Direct-Access (mpx.vmhba50:C0:T0:L0)
How can I get disk usable for perform a VM backup?

It's in debugging mode now, which is why I can adb push to the phone. The phone should (and has in the past) mounted USB storage even in debugging mode.
That wouldn't change the fact that no other USB mass storage will mount either. I'm just using my phone as an example. USB Hard drives and my SD card reader don't show up either, but I can't do a "push" command to those like I can my phone...
If you are wondering where your post went, I think you meant to hit the 'reply' link rather than the 'report' link.  It happens more often than you would think
Edit: Oh, I see you already figured that out.

  • How to mount two tapes for differente backup types (FS bkps and RMAN Bkps)

    Hi all,
I have installed OSB and at first time I just could run database backups through RMAN to my tape.
I created two tapes but all of then are mounting with a volume like VOL00000XX and I can't mount it in a volume like RMAN-DEFAULT00000XX anymore.
What do I need to do?
I have two tapes like that:
    ob> lsdev --mount
drive TAPE_1 in service write obtar VOL000001
drive TAPE_2 in service write obtar VOL000001

Pending resource availability error message usually points to one of two things:
    1) Tape is not available that OSB can use for the backup operation....this is what I suspect in your case
    2) Tape drive not available
You have existing tapes in the library which have a vol-xxx ID...can only guess that is the "null" media family unless you have created another media family. The null media family is used for file system backup operations where a media family was not user defined. The null media family expiration is defined in the defaults/policies, media section. By default the null media family volumeretaintime is disabled meanding they won't automaticallly expire.
You should determine what media family was utilized to create the existing tapes....this will tell you what the retention methodology OSB is using. If OSB believes these tapes are still valid (ie no expiration time), OSB will not use them for future backup operations unless to same media family. If you tried to backup to rman-default media family but all tapes in library have already been assisned to another media family, then the backup operation will error out with pending resource availability.
You may want to review media families. If all tapes in library have been labeled and you want to unlabel to be able to use for different media family, you can do a force unlabel operation. Please know this effectively "erases" tape from OSB perspective so prior to doing that make sure there is NO valid backup data on tape you want to keep.

  • Auto-mounting USB storage devices doesn't work

    Hi all,
I have some problems with the auto-mounting of USB storage devices. I already installed udisks and ntfs-3g.
When I connect the external device (it's an external hard disk WD My Passport 500GB, but I have the same problem with a SanDisk USB stick 8GB) the auto-mount doesn't work. I see a shorcut in the left panel of Thunar but if I try to use it Thunar crash without any message error.
I try with the manual mount and it works, but the left panel of Thunar continue to have the same problem.
In the italian Arch forum a friend suggest me to open Thunar from bash and close it. If I do it I receive this error log:

  • Icloud storage for more backup

I bought extra icloud backup storage with credit card, and apple already deducted my credit card meaning already charged money to my card, but i waited about half an hour already, still the storage plan not reflected to have the extra space i bought, i bought 20 gb which cost USD 0.99 monthly,  what should i do to enquiry on this..

Thank you. I will try it... I'm trying Not to use my credit/debit card online.. I have both iTunes credit & App Store card credit on my iTunes I hope this works! I don't want my storage down graded before I can get another iTunes card.. I wish they had an extension date for few days.. (More personal note - single mom,y child is sick & so not going to store in the next few days to purchase iTunes card..)
Why wouldn't they allow App Store credit to be used since its used to buy apps & songs via iTunes.. Seems kinda misrepresenting to be an apple card that connects all these apps & devices together, but you can only utilize iTunes card credit or credit/debit card for iCloud...!!??

    ok, thank you.

  • Best Cloud Storage for iPhoto backup?

Hello, it seems ridiculous that Apples iCloud doesn't allow you to backup your entire iPhoto library... so I'm looking for some advice on the best alternative options. I currently have TM backup automatically, but I travel between the USA and Europe often and would love a safe and simple online backup system. Anyone have reccomendations? Carbonite? Dropbox?
    Thanks in advance!

Online doesn’t really work for iPhoto because most solutions don't understand the iPhoto Library structures and also because of the massive amounts of data involved. We often see folks on here complaining of restores taking days to complete.
But you do raise a very important issue and this is what I have done in this case:
My Library lives on my iMac. It’s Backed up to  two external hard disks every day. These disks are permanently attached to the iMac. These back ups run automatically. One is done by Time Machine, one is a bootable back up done by SuperDuper
It’s also backed up to a portable hard disk when ever new photos are added. This hard disk lives in my car. For security, this disk is password protected.
I have a second off-site back up at a relative’s house across town. That’s updated every 3 or 4 months.
My Photos are backed up online. There are many options: Flickr, Picasa, SmugMug etc. However, check the terms of your account carefully. While most sites have free uploading, you will often find that these uploads are limited in terms of the file size or the bandwidth you can use per month. For access that allows you to upload full size pics with no restrictions you may need to pay.
Every couple of months I test the back ups to make sure they are working correctly. It’s very easy to mis-configure a back up application, and the only way to protect against that is to do a trial restore.

  • Which NAS you recommend for SMB backup storage

Synology and ReadyNAS would be my first choices in this category.  I have and use both and love them.  I've had quite good success with Buffalo as well with clients.  Nearly all storage engineers that I know when choosing this type of storage, like Kooler, choice Synology and ReadyNAS.
For backups and archives specifically I have had good luck with Drobo too.

For me it's always between Netgear and Synology. Now I'm back to Netgears (being a green guy here I cannot tell reason in public). For anything bigger then 2 SATAs in RAID1 economically reasonable to "roll your own" backup appliance. Recycled Dell R7xx and again recycled Windows Server 2012 R2 (because of SMB3 and decent backup-ready dedupe) appliance is very hard to beat! In case you don't have old server xByte has a stack of reburbished ones they sell cheap.--Planning to buy a NAS storage for our backups.Very small environment with VMware host, 7 VMs, Veeam backup.Total backup size 200GB, daily increment is around 7-10GB (Compressed). Will use the NAS for backup storage only and nothing else.Which brand do you recommend or use at your SMB locations:SynologyQNAPSeagateNetgear ReadyNASBuffalo

  • USB storage with WRT610N....help!

After spending 4 hours (no exageration) with Linksys Level 2 tech support I am at my wits end....
I just purchased a WRT610N and want to use the USB storage feature to backup my primary desktop.  Here's the specifics:
Desktop is an older Dell XPS runnings XP SP3.  Desktop has three logons....for myself and my kids.
I'd also like each desktop logon to be able to access the router USB storage feature so that we have a common place for pictures, etc.
I have an office laptop and I would like this to access the storage device
Eventually I will be adding more computers to the network for my kids.
I'm also interested in using the FTP access to get to the files on the storage device when I am away from home.
Through 3 separate tech support calls, each tech tried a different approach to get this to work.  Nothing worked.  I want to start from scratch....  What is the best way to accomplish what I want to do?  After suffering through the pain, is the WRT610N a good solution or should I return it to Amazon and do this some other way?
A final note, tech support did upgrade the WRT610N's firmware to 1.00.00.18.
Thanks in advance for your help!

The harsh reality is that the results for people trying to use the Storage Link function have been mixed, at best.  Especially in trying to utilize it for a "backuP' function.  The kernel used to manage the Storage Link is apparently unix/linux based, and has some difficulty playing nice with Windows based backup utilities.  Additionally, there have been reports that the connectivity to the attached devices is, at times, poor.  Finally, there are issues with file corruption (date/time stamps, specifically).  There have been no firmware updates to deal with these issues.  If your primary need is for an attached NAS solution, I would strongly recommend looking at other devices for that solution.

  • How do people backup iPhoto library for offsite backup?

I use time machine for a local backup and I also copy the iPhoto library to another external USB HDD for extra backup.
So I know you should also have a backup offsite in case of disaster. So how do people do this? What methods, cloud? External HDD? DVDs? Etc and where do you keep it?
What I'm thinking is as the iPhoto library can become very large 100's of Gb it's not easy to backup to say the cloud or to DVDs (is this possible at all?), how do I do this?
Also once copied to say another external USB HDD, every week it changes so do I have to do a full copy of the library again everytime?
    Cheers

  • E70 new firware - cure for the Linux USB storage b...

As anybody who've tried the usb-storage mode on linux knows, E70 usb storage support is buggy. (See http://joker.iki.fi/cms/?q=node/265&PHPSESSID=682710e65e04be1fc87b2c8bce1688c3 - though the patch mentioned there hasn't found its way to the mainline kernel afaict). Apparently E70 reports false device size to the usb host, and causes a bunch of these errors:

[75974.362000] Buffer I/O error on device sda, logical block 488815
Does anybody know if the new firmware takes care of this?

Possibly. I upgraded from 2.6.16, where I saw all these problems. So perhaps it was fixed ( or rather, worked-around ! ) in 2.6.17.

  • I have used my 2TB TC for wifi and as principal backup disk for Time Machine for a few years.  I would now like to begin using another external HD for Time Machine.  My question is.... Can I repurpose the Time Capsule to use as storage for libraries?

For example - I plan to use 2TB TC to house my iTunes Media Library and iPhoto Libraries - permitting access from my network.

I believe based on your notes that I need to forget about moving the iPhoto library.... even though I have found in Apple support:
    http://help.apple.com/iphoto/mac/9.5/#pht6d607c42
That document says.. and I quote.
You can move your entire iPhoto library to a different computer, a hard disk, or another location on your computer.
Note that none of those locations are network.
A different computer is not network.. a hard disk is a location on the same computer as is computer location.. they are saying the same thing.
Here is what apple says about networks.. which I referenced above.. and Bob referred to.
It's recommended that you store your iPhoto library on a locally mounted hard drive. Storing your iPhoto library on a network share can lead to poor performance, data corruption, or data loss.
These are not inconsistent.. you can move the library.. what you cannot do is use it from a network location.. it must be locally mounted.
And do you think the new Photos will change any of this  (though presently I am still on 10.9.5)
This is what we don't know yet.. it does look like photos will be more network aware.. do you want to be on the bleeding edge and discover it fails??
You can use any drive you like locally for TM backups.. however if you plug that drive into the TC and make it a network drive then it will become super slow.. since the TC only has USB2 port. You also cannot use TM backups on a local drive and then move it to the network.. TM backs up differently in network cf local drives.
You must partition the drive. If you want to use the one and same drive for both backups and files, partition it before hand.  if you mix the backups with actual data files on the same drive.. you have no backups if the drive fails.. You must have all files on at least 2 drives. For iphoto let me suggest more than 2.. since photos are irreplaceable and it is so easy for things to go wrong.. including fire, flood and theft. Make up a USB drive and park it with relatives.

    mount -F pcfs /dev/dsk/c4t0d0s0:c /mnt

Hello! First try using the motherboard ports to rule out a bad pci card. Then attache the drive and turn it on and open disk utility to see if it can repair it. If that doesn't work boot from the install cd and run disk utility from there to try and repair the drive. It has been formatted hasn't it? Tom

  • Mount foreign usb storage

The aim is to mount any usb storage (say, not mine one) with write rights for normal user. So, use cases with fstab and udev automounting are not acceptable.
OK, I have found this https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/US … ge_Devices wiki page and have tried to follow. In particular, I have:
    ~ $ sudo blkid -o list -c /dev/null | grep sdc1
    /dev/sdc1 ext4 (not mounted) 15bfa2da-6214-4228-851e-c1207b74fc34
    ~ $ sudo mount -o gid=users,fmask=113,dmask=002 /dev/sdc1 /media
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sdc1,
missing codepage or helper program, or other error
In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try
    dmesg | tail or so
dmesg shows "Unrecognized mount option" for all these three options (I have tried to remove them one by one). Apparently, ext4 just hasn't these options. But - how to mount?

Congratulations on your choice of Os ;-)
To solve this problem you can try and create a directory called /rmdisk , then start vold running:
    /etc/init.d/volmgt stop
    /etc/init.d/volmgt start
if you are lucky your USB flash will show up under /rmdisk/<name> after a few seconds.
If not you should be able to see the flash with cfgadm, which list the status of USB ports (among other things).
Solaris should automatically create a /dev/dsk/ and /dev/rdsk/ entries for your flash memory, if its not automatically mounted by vold, try and stop vold using
    /etc/init.d/volmgt stop
Then do a cd /dev/dsk and run an ls -lart, the USB devices should be among the last devices in that list, then mount it using:
    mount -F pcfs /dev/dsk/<device> /some/directory
the device should end with s2 or p2, some flash devices might also need :c, aka /dev/dsk/<device>:c, it depends how its configured.
See man mount_pcfs for more information...
Hope this helps a bit (:

  • Satellite Z830 - recovery backup on USB storage disk

I need to do the recovery system backup of this Z830.
But unfortunately, the system did not recognize the usb storage disk for doing this recovery.
Obviously, the usb storage disk have plenty of space and work OK on this Z830.
    Any suggestions?
