Mounting a slice on a second disk

Hi. We just got a new Solaris machine, which contains 2 disk drives. All the slices on the first disk is fully mounted. The second disk contains the following slices, which I got from the format command:

Part Tag Flag Cylinders Size Blocks
0 root wm 0 - 25 129.19MB (26/0/0) 264576

6 usr wm 52 - 14086 68.10GB (14035/0/0) 142820160
7 unassigned wm 0 0 (0/0/0) 0
I tried to this command:
mount dev/dsk/c1t0d0s5 /files1
and got the following message: /dev/dsk/c1t0d0s0: bad magic number
Any Ideas?

Any Ideas?are you trying to inspect what's already on the disk, or put some of the "unused" component of that disk to use?
if #1 - then pick a slice that's potentially there (i.e. 0 or 6)
if #2 - (and if you don't care what's on the disk) - then go in and remove slices 0,1 and 6 and recreate one or more slices of the particular size you want.
if that's unclear to you, man -s 1m format and then man -s 1m newfs

  • [SOLVED] Triple Boot Arch Linux, Windows 7 + Windows 8 on second disk

    Hi,
I have installed Arch Linux and Windows 7 on my primary disk. Everything's perfect. I want to install Windows 8 on my second disk. My only problem is how do I make grub2 recognize Windows 8 on the second disk and add it to the grub file, so i can boot Arch, Windows 7 and Windows 8.
    Thank you for your time,

It overwrote the MBR from the first disk, even though you installed Windows 8 on the second disk? That's odd... Make sure that the boot order in the BIOS is right (that the drive with Arch Linux is the first to boot) and from a 2012 Arch Linux install media run:
    # mount /dev/sdxY /mnt #Your root partition.
    # mount /dev/sdxZ /mnt/boot #Your boot partition (if you have one).
    # arch-chroot /mnt
And continue with the instructions from here. If you don't have a 2012 Arch Linux install media (or you only have some other "live" Linux distribution), use the old chroot way.

    Hi,
newly installed Windows Server 2012 R2 with two internal harddrives.
The two disks shows up in Disk Manager but only one in File Explorer.
How can i configure the server to expose the second disk in File Explorer?

    Hi Roger,
Has the problem been solved by online/initializing/assigning drive letter ?

  • Eject is not working when installer asks to insert second disk

I have a quite strange problem, when i'm installing world of warcraft on my laptop, everything goes allright for a first (of 5) dvd, it's running install till 20% and then asks to insert a second disk. When i'm trying to eject the first one it says, that a disk is in use and refuses to eject it (nor the eject button, nor dragging cd to bin works). But this is not the end, when i even closed the installer, it still is saying, that disk is in use, and doesn't want to eject it until reboot.
Maybe someone had this problem and solved it? Please, help, i don't want to download 4 gigs of installation.

    Hello,
I just had my DVD drive replaced by Apple. This did not solve my issue. I am still unable to install WoW. Any help would be much much appreciated... This is SO frustrating...
    Thanks!

  • Verbatim disk drive historically used only for time machine backups. Recently i added some other media files to use some of available space without partitioning, the disc now refuses to mount in finder despite appearing in disk utility. Repair fails. HELP

Sorry to elaborate a bit more.
I have used time machine since owning my mac book pro with no issues. i keep the timemachine backups on an external hard drive made by Verbatim. This has not external power source.
Recently i decided to use up some of the available space on the external verbatim disk drive to store some movie files which were sitting on my macbook pro.
Therefore i created a new folder outside of the time machine backup folder and stored the movie files in there.
From then on Time machine failed... and a few days later i noticed it was not mounting in 'finder'
Therefore i used disk utility to see if it was recognising it. Which i was. However when i try to repair it the repair process fails.
In disk utility i am presented with 1 TB Samsung HN M10 which has a child called Verbatim HD.
The 1TB Samsung hardware appears fine, but the verbatim disk i am unable to fully verify and fix.
Does this mean i have lost all my back ups?
Have I lost all the media that i put on there?
Is there any way to fix this?
    Any help would be appreciated.
    didier07...

To summarize: You used an external Verbatim HD for your TM backups. Then, you stored some movie files on the "spare" space on the Verbatim drive. Now, Disk Utility isn't being recognized, and repair is disabled. Your home Samsung drive is working fine, but the Verbatim cannot be verified.
The problem, I believe, is that the external Verbatim drive wasn't partitioned. There should be two partitions: one for TM backups, the other for video. That way, you can perform backups, and still retain some space for video or somesuch.
Frankly, I don't know how to fix this except through the following. (1) Erase the Verbatim drive, (2) Create a new blank space and format it, (3) Make two partitions - one for backup, the other for video. (4) Run TM through one partition, but switch to the other for your videos.  The better solution might be to have one dedicated drive (perhaps the Verbatim) for backups, and another dedicated drive for video backups; that way, you'll have plenty of space for expansion.
I hope someone will correct me if I'm incorrect, but I believe you've essentially lost your backups and media. I don't know how you can retrieve that clump of the now-undifferentiated data on the Verbatim drive. To retrieve any lost data, you're going to require another external drive that's larger in capacity, as well as data recovery software; don't expect encouraging results. If you're desperate, there are firms like Drive Savers that can offer a more comprehensive solution - at a cost.

Hi, I have a freecom 1TB hard drive which was working fine until it froze.  I pulled it out (mistake I now know) and now it doesn't mount.  It shows up in Disk Utility but won't manually mount.  When I try to repair it gives message 'failed on exit'. Some people have said to try Disk Warrior, but at $100 it's quite expensive maybe fix.  help!

You likely need to reformat the drive which will destroy all data and you need a backup to restore it. If no backup is present then a data retrieval service can be more expensive than DiskWarrior. There is software that can rescue the data but I can not vouch for it's effectiveness as I have always maintained backups. .

  • Can one put XP image on the second disk with "img"?

    Hi all,
We have a requirement to put in two IDE disks in the same machine and
image the machines with different XP systems, each hard disk hosting one
    operating system.
I was wondering whether Zen "img" utility allows for putting images on
more then one disk. Say for example:
    XP-image1.zmg --> to hda (disk1)
    XP-image2.xmg --> to hdb (disk2)
I have read documentation which mentions the ability of img program to
image partitions but not other disks. Any ideas? Preferably a command
line sample if there is such would help.
    Cheers,
    Skender

Thanks for quick reply Dave. Looks like this will do the job for me.

  • NMH305 second disk size

Hello. I have very simple question, and I can't find the anserw anywhere.
The second disk that i would like to install, does it have to be in the same size as the first one?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Hi there,
I think it would depend on the type of disk configuration that you’re going to establish on the NMH. If it’s Linear 2 (Increase Storage), then the 2nd drive is not necessarily larger than the first drive in terms of its storage size capacity. If you’re planning to configure the disks to RAID 1 (Increase Protection), then it’s required to have a larger storage size capacity for the 2nd drive.
Additionally, it would be best to get a 2nd hard disk that has been tested already by linksys.
    Hope this will help.

  • Second disk lost after video firmware update...

After updating the firmware on the Radeon X1900, my second disk disappeared from desktop. System Profiler and the Disk Utility show the drive, but cannot see it anywhere else.

OK, so I just called tech support and their final conclusion is to reformat the drive. That's it! No answers, explanation.

  • Re-install Tiger with target mode - how to boot to second disk?

I am resurrecting a friend's macbook. In the process of upgrading to Snow Leopard, the DVD drive quit. The install never finished and on boot it was showing the grey and black "please restart your mac" screen.
I used disk utility to repair the disk but it still booted to the error message. I erased the HD and was able to get it to boot using an install on a firewire drive, but I haven't been able to install it on the macbook HD.
I created disk images for each disk and put them on separate partitions on the firewire drive. I was able to install Tiger on her HD all the way to the "insert second disk" message, but don't know how to switch to the other partition where the disk 2 install is.
The original Tiger install is on the two disks that came with her computer. The Snow Leopard is the retail version on one DVD.
    Any ideas?
    thanks in advance

Unless you can boot your computer from Tiger then you cannot install Tiger via Target Disk Mode onto the other computer. You need to get an external DVD drive for the non-working computer or you can clone the installer DVD to an 8 GB flash drive and boot the computer using the flash drive via OPTION boot.
You can put both DVDs on a 16 GB flash drive that has been partitioned into two volumes.
Clone using Restore Option of Disk Utility
      1. Open Disk Utility in the Utilities folder.
      2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
      3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
      4. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag
it to the Destination entry field.
      5. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to
          the Source entry field.
      6. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the flash drive. Source means the installer DVD. If you wish to put both DVDs on a 16 GB partitioned flash drive, then the destinations will be a volume on the flash drive.

  • One disk, second disk-where are you?

    hi
Question is after I aded second disk to primary chanel as a slave my XP does not see him, BIOS does.
first disk is a seagate cuda 40 gb, second is a wd 20 gb, both of them have same rpm 7200 and same udma 100
    Many Thanks R.Zicz

    Assaf is 100% right,
always partition, then format the disk.
he can use the win xp cd to boot the PC and JUST make the new drive (WD) as a new partition, then immediately go back to windows (without using the win xp cd) and here he can format the new drive.

  • Satellite P875-319 and Second Disk Drive

Hello, I have one question. Does P875-319 has slot for second disk drive?

    Hi
    Please check this:
    +Toshiba Satellite P870, P875 - Hard Disc Drive Replacement Procedure+
    http://aps2.toshiba-tro.de/kb0/CRU2603C90000R01.htm
After the memory slot cover has been removed, you will see two HDD bays.
There is a primary HDD bay and secondary HDD/SDD bay
But not all P875 unit support the HDD controller for the 2nd HDD bay.
In such case 2nd HDD is not possible so check if an connector is available.

  • Second Disk Permissions Problem

    Hi
I had an OS crash on OSX 10.5, reinstalled 10.4 then upgraded back to 10.5.8.
When is was done my second disk is not available for use.
Logged in on my Admin account, In FInder when I try to access the disk, i get a dialog box with the error "The Folder "500GB HD" could not be opened because you do not have sufficient privileges."
Using Disk Utility, I can verify the disk.
I can select the desktop icon of the hard drive and  using 'apple i' get the Info window.  The permissions are:
    (unknown)  Custom
    system Custom
    admin Custom
    everyone No Access
When I attempt to select different permissions the selection is ignored and and the pull down menu reverts to the above in all cases.
Can you tell me how to fix permissions to make the disk accessible again?
I have a Mac Pro, 2 x Dual Core Intel Xeon, 2GB ram

    Hello,
Open Terminal & paste this in, spaces are important...
    chown root /Volumes/
    chmod 1777 /Volumes/
then right after the last / of each line, carefully type the name of that external volume, & if it has spaces in it enclose the name in quote marks.
See this User Tip by Niel: I accidentally set a disk's permissions to No Access ...
