Not in the way you probably envision. Here is the Service Manual:
    Manual
See Page 50. Unlike the Envy 17 and Pavilion dv7, the Pavilion 17 has only one hard drive bay. The only way to add a second hard drive is to remove the DVD (optical drive) and insert a DVD bay hard drive adapter. The Manual shows how to remove the DVD drive and you can buy the adapter at amazon.com or from jacobsparts.com. Note it is a 9.5 mm thick drive, not a 12.7 mm. Both types are available. I do not recommend the DVD drive adapter solution because you lose the use of the optical drive and also because the optical drive interface is usually not as fast as the main hard drive interface. Still fast enough for simple storage and you can run a video from it but you would not want to edit video from that drive, for example.
    https://www.jacobsparts.com/items/HDDBAY-02/
If you do decide to go the DVD adapter route I would buy a large capacity 5400 rpm SATA 2.5 inch wide and 9.5 mm thick hard drive. No sense in buying a more expensive high performance drive.

  • Solaris 10x86 and grub, bootloading and how to add new disk

In the latest version of Solaris 10 (1/06) it now uses grub to do the bootloading.
I cannot get grub to create a new partition on my new second disk.
    BIOS sees my disk.
At first "format" would not see the disk. I ran "reboot -- -r" to fix this.
Now, I go into the grub shell with /boot/grub/bin/grub and attempt to run "partnew" -- the grub command to add partitions. It fails.
One of the arguments for 'partnew' is TYPE. However, I've googled my fingers to death, and nowhere can I find out what number I should use in type. The grub docs only say it should be a number between 0 and 0xff.
I want to multi-partition the second disk for linux/solaris/and or windows.
What if I take out disk1 containing solaris, move disk2 into that slot, then insert the windows installation cd and let it partition the disk.? Then put it back in slot 2....

Why are you trying to partition the disk with 'grub'? Since you've completed the installtion you can use 'fdisk' directly.
However I wouldn't bother. I'd just let the installer of whatever OS you're putting on do the right thing. Either Linux or Windows could partition it as you're installing.
Then you could go back and edit grub if you needed to so that they would boot properly.
This page talks about multibooting some different operating systems. You dont need to use it as a recipe, but you might find some of the concepts handy.

  • Add new disk(space) into exist ASM

    Hi Experts,
We have a oracle 11.1 4 nodes RAC at red hat 5 kinux. we database build as 10.2.04 at ASM with two disk group.
the original DBA put all space into two diskgroup data+ 300G and FSDISK 1500G.
Now my boss ask to create second database in this server. But I found there are no canada disk is availuable to build two new diskgroup to support new second database.
Existing database is running over 2 years. How can we release 500G diskspace as canada disk for ASM from FSDISK group?
    or
How can we add new disk into ASM?
We do not have special storage person in small sys/dba team.
    I am looking for help!!
    JIm

    Hi nvengurl ,
It is nice to get your advice. some sr.DBA told me as" Two instances in the same database can share the disk-group"
    other DBA told me as
Two different DATABASES cannot (remember, RAC uses a database with multiple instances). So technically you can share a diskgroup between instances, as long as they're in the same database."
some DBA said as Two separate instances cannot share a diskgroup"
I am not sure. please oracle expert and oracle company staff to confirm this point.
If I create two database with exist diskgroup. any performance or maintenance issue
I am looking for your help!!!

  • Second disk (HDD) spins down occasionally, ignoring energy setting.

I've UNCHECKED the setting "Put the hard disk(s) to sleep when possible" because I find no value in this. Yet my second disk (HDD) occasionally spins down when the computer is left idle for a while. (My first disk is an SSD). It's all apple-made, no custom or user changes inside. It's not a big deal, but I know spinning down and up again adds wear to the disk and it's something I'd rather not have the disk doing. It's ignoring the setting, why is this? and can I do something about it?

I was affraid that would be the case, blah! Well it's an HDD so I can hear it click when it spins down and back up. It's mostly just happening when the computer is idle for a long time but it's still a wasteful act because it usually spins right back up again after a while and it SEEMS this time around it won't wait equally long before it spins down again but does so relatively quickly again as if the drive figured something minor just happened and that it can just go "back to sleep" when it's done, which on it's turn adds to the wear if I'd leave it like this for hours on since SOME activity is always present from time to time on any disk.

  • [SOLVED] Triple Boot Arch Linux, Windows 7 + Windows 8 on second disk

    Hi,
I have installed Arch Linux and Windows 7 on my primary disk. Everything's perfect. I want to install Windows 8 on my second disk. My only problem is how do I make grub2 recognize Windows 8 on the second disk and add it to the grub file, so i can boot Arch, Windows 7 and Windows 8.
    Thank you for your time,

It overwrote the MBR from the first disk, even though you installed Windows 8 on the second disk? That's odd... Make sure that the boot order in the BIOS is right (that the drive with Arch Linux is the first to boot) and from a 2012 Arch Linux install media run:
    # mount /dev/sdxY /mnt #Your root partition.
    # mount /dev/sdxZ /mnt/boot #Your boot partition (if you have one).
    # arch-chroot /mnt
And continue with the instructions from here. If you don't have a 2012 Arch Linux install media (or you only have some other "live" Linux distribution), use the old chroot way.

  • Eject is not working when installer asks to insert second disk

I have a quite strange problem, when i'm installing world of warcraft on my laptop, everything goes allright for a first (of 5) dvd, it's running install till 20% and then asks to insert a second disk. When i'm trying to eject the first one it says, that a disk is in use and refuses to eject it (nor the eject button, nor dragging cd to bin works). But this is not the end, when i even closed the installer, it still is saying, that disk is in use, and doesn't want to eject it until reboot.
Maybe someone had this problem and solved it? Please, help, i don't want to download 4 gigs of installation.

    Hello,
I just had my DVD drive replaced by Apple. This did not solve my issue. I am still unable to install WoW. Any help would be much much appreciated... This is SO frustrating...
    Thanks!

  • How do I Add second monitor to ALL in One ENVY23 that has a HDMI port

Serial #: [edited Serial Number by Moderator]

Here are the specs for your HP ENVY TouchSmart 23se-d494 All-in-One Desktop Computer. Based the specs, the HDMI port on the side of your computer is an INPUT only. This model doesn't have a video output of any kind.
1 - Controls           2 - HDMI In port (model dependent)
You will need to purchase and use a USB-to-video adapter such as the EVGA UV Plus+ UV39 (or any of the many other adapters on the market) to connect an external display to your computer. I personally use and recommend the EVGA UV Plus+ UV39.

  • Add a disk to RAC

    Hello,
I have a RAC database with 2 nodes and a cluster.
In my Cluster I have 3 disks with RAID5. I need to add 2 disks RAID0 where I will put my redolog files because I have a big waiting time in "log file parallel write"
I' m new in RAC and cluster can I add disksto a cluster with different RAID?

You could mix any kind of RAID (of course not recommended). Indeed, redologs with their high write activity should not be put on RAID5.

I would actually question whether or not more disks increase the risk of a disk failure. One disk can break as likely as one of two of more disks.
Simple stats.  Buying 2 lottery tickets instead of one, gives you 2 chances to win the lottery prize. Not 1. Even though the odds of winning per ticket remains unchanged.
2 disks buy you 2 tickets in The-Drive-Failure lottery.
Back in the 90's, BT (British Telecom) had a 80+ node OPS cluster build with Pyramid MPP hardware. They had a dedicated store of scsi disks for replacing failed disks - as there were disk failure fairly often due to the number of disks. (a Pryamid MPP chassis looked like a Xmas tree with all the scsi drive LEDs, and BT had several)
In my experience - one should rather expect a drive failure sooner, than later. And have some kind of contingency plan in place to recover from the failure.
The use of symbolic links instead of striping the filesystem protects from the complete loss of the enchilada if a volume member fails, but it does not reduce the risk of loosing data.
I would rather buy a single ticket for the drive failure lottery for a root drive, than 2 tickets in this case. And using symbolic links to "offload" non-critical files to the 2nd drive means that its lottery ticket prize is not a non-bootable server due to a toasted root drive.

  • Can one put XP image on the second disk with "img"?

    Hi all,
We have a requirement to put in two IDE disks in the same machine and
image the machines with different XP systems, each hard disk hosting one
    operating system.
I was wondering whether Zen "img" utility allows for putting images on
more then one disk. Say for example:
    XP-image1.zmg --> to hda (disk1)
    XP-image2.xmg --> to hdb (disk2)
I have read documentation which mentions the ability of img program to
image partitions but not other disks. Any ideas? Preferably a command
line sample if there is such would help.
    Cheers,
    Skender

Thanks for quick reply Dave. Looks like this will do the job for me.

  • DPM 2010 - disk allocation - does not move to second disk

    Hi,
I have added two disks in DPM.
In the picture, Disk 0 only has 5% left. However, Disk 2 has 100%. I was wondering why  is it not using Disk2?
I want DPM to use 90% of disk 0 and keep 10% free and move rest of the data to disk2.
Is it possible?  Hope it is clear.
    Any help appreciated :)

    Hi,
if you add a new Datasource, DPM is choosing the disk with the most free space, if you add a Disk after your PG and DS creation, DPM is not moving any Data automatically.
    You can use the Migratedatasourcedatafromdpm.ps1:
    http://blogs.technet.com/b/askcore/archive/2009/06/22/how-to-use-the-migratedatasourcedatafromdpm-ps1-dpm-powershell-script-to-move-data.aspx
to move Datasources to the new Disk or maybe a liitle bit easier, there is a GUI Version here:
    http://gallery.technet.microsoft.com/Migrate-DPM-Disk-or-dea8d4e9
please rate the GUI Version if you like it.
Remeber, if you move Data to a new disk, the old RP will stay on the old disk until the Retention period is over, only new RP will be written to new Disk. So it will take  a while to free up the old disk
